No West Palm Beach Show in 2008

This was one of my favorite shows of the year and John Organ was one helluva guy. It’s a sad situation and I hope things work out for this show to return in 2009. The following article was written on Bodysport. Reposted with permission from Bodysport.com

No Palm Beach Show in 2008
By Kevin Myles

Since the untimely death of IFBB Palm Beach Pro promoter John Organ in May of this year, the future of the Palm Beach Pro Fitness and Figure show has been in question. Organ’s financial partner Sophie Crompton felt unable to continue on her own and less than willing to be involved with the show without her long time friend and business partner John Organ involved so she contacted one of Organ’s friends, Bodysport.com’s Terry Goodlad to discuss options. Goodlad agreed to do his best to make the show happen but knowing his time and experience was limited he contacted veteran promoter and NPC Texas State Chairman Lee Thompson who immediately agreed to help, “There was no way I would have the time or experience to promote the event on my own so I got in touch with NPC Texas State Chairman Lee Thompson who offered to work with me and try our best to make the show happen.”

Putting on an event of this magnitude takes months of hard work and planing and despite a monumental effort, it proved to be impossible to generate sponsors and properly promote the show in the short time available, “The first big problem was the venue. Where John had it the first two years was too small and the stage was not adequate. He had reserved the convention center which was huge but there were a lot of legal issues surrounding the deposit Organ had made on the venue so we had to find another place. It was almost impossible to find a suitable venue and once we did it was too late for potential sponsors to come up with the dollars required to make the show a success. Much to our disappointment as each week passed it became more and more obvious that it was going to be impossible to promote the event this year.”

Both Thompson and Goodlad as well as IFBB Vice President Jim Manion wanted the show to continue in memory of John Organ stated Goodlad, “We all wanted to do this show in tribute to John, he was very well liked by all who knew him and he always put on a great show for the competitors and fans. the competitors also looked forward to that show each year being in Palm Beach, Florida as well as being right after the Olympia the girls could try to qualify for the following year’s Olympia taking all the pressure off to qualify the next year.

It was more than a daunting task at the outset but Lee jumped in to help right away and we both did all we could to save the show this year and Mr. Manion was supporting those efforts fully as he wanted the athletes to have that show on the schedule, especially for fitness athletes who have a limited number of shows to compete in each year as it is.”

Thompson and Goodlad have not walked away from the project entirely however, “we may try to make it work in 2009, at least we have the time now to try and make that happen.”

Update from Jacksonville

Those of you who had hopes of getting a tan or doing a few beach shoots may have to wait a bit. The weather report from Jacksonville is rainy with dreary skies. I’m told Adela Garcia and Tracey Greenwood will be making the trip to this show. Tracey is scheduled to guest pose where fans will get a look at the Houston Pro champ. Will she repeat in a couple weeks at the Europa Super Show? As long as she doesn’t hurt her head from all those handstand push-ups she’s been doing, she just might find the winner’s circle again.

Check back throughout the weekend for more Jacksonville reports.

HardBody Photo of the Day: Julie Ann Kulla

Julie Ann Kulla joined the ranks of the IFBB by winning the 2008 NPC Jr. Nationals overall figure title. She hails out of Minnesooooooota. Yes you have to do your worst FARGO impersonation when you say Minnesota. This little china doll works as a graphic designer and you’ll probably see some of her work at the Olympia. Julie Ann works with one of the biggest trade show booth companies. I had the chance to chat with her after her win at Jr. Nationals and she is a pleasure to be around. We spoke a bit more at the NPC USAs where we did a quick shoot. Despite the stupid hot temperatures, we were able to get a few good shots. Julie Ann is a a natural in front of the camera, takes direction well and isn’t afraid to turn on “the look”. She’ll be making her pro debut at this year’s NY PRO Figure contest, which is held in conjunction with the Team Universe. Don’t be surprised if you see her qualifying for the Olympia her first time out.

The Reigning Fitness Champ is out of the Olympia

The reigning Fitness Olympia Champion, Adela Garcia withdraws from the Olympia after sustaining an injury. I had a chance to speak with Adela today and she is doing her best to stay positive through this injury. No one wants to see anyone go down with an injury, especially a champion. Other fitness stars like Julie Lohre and Tanji Johnson have suffered knee injuries and came back to do well. Expect The Chica to do the same after her surgery.

adela_large.jpg

The 2008 Fitness Olympia lost a little luster today when three-time and reigning champion Adela Garcia announced she will be pulling out of the contest after tearing her anterior cruciate ligament.

“I’m out,” a disappointed Garcia said. “I’m so said. I was really looking forward to this Olympia It broke my heart, but there’s nothing I can do about it.”

Check out FLEXonline.com for more of the story on Adela Garcia withdrawing from the Olympia.

Top contender out of the Olympia?

Could one of the top female Olympia contenders be out of the show? Unfortunately, it is looking like this news is true.

Stay tuned for more info.

Photos of the Day: Alicia Harris

The young Janet Jackson look-alike, aka Smiley, Alicia Harris is today’s photo of the day. Alicia was an awesome model and when she smiles it lights up the camera. I caught up with Alicia on the UNLV track for a photo shoot. She’ll be making the trip to The Big Apple in September for the Team Univers/Figure Nationals and hopes to leave with a pro card. Keep your eye on her, she has the potential to do well on and off stage with her look.

NPC Competitor Abbe Dorn Makes the Semi-Finals of American Gladiators

This Monday, August 4th tune into NBC and watch NPC Figure Competitor and Denver Police Officer, Abbe Dorn in the American Gladiators semi-finals. Will the Performance Ready diva make it all the way through to the finals? I asked Abbe that question when she competed at the 2008 Colorado State Figure competition. She wouldn’t say and told me I’d have to wait and see. We’ll see if she goes the distance next Monday. Abbe is currently training for the Carla Sanchez Fitness Fiesta on October 4, 2008.

Momma to Be – Mavis Tozzi Update

IFBB Figure Pro, Mavis Tozzi checked in recently and is happy to report that she is feeling good. She’s currently 29 weeks into her pregnancy and is ecstatic that it has been problem free. Mavis tells me she’s starting to have a few aches and discomforts but everything is still manageable for her. She’ll soon be the proud mother to a baby boy. Yes, Mavis isn’t like some who want it to be a surprise as to what sex will be joining her in the world. Based on his current weight and measurements she believes he will weigh around 8-9lbs. Mavis was a big baby herself at 8lbs, 15 ounces and she’s told big momma can often equate to big baby. “Big Momma” Mavis and her husband have decided on the name Nicholas for the little guy joining them very soon.

Her buddy Christine Wan did a little “praciticing” with her camera and was kind enough to provide this photo.

Hardbody Photo of the Day: Kristi Tauti

IFBB Pro Kristi Tauti is today’s photo of the day. This pint size cutie is on her way to Florida this weekend looking to shake things up at the Jacksonville Pro. She’s already qualified for the Olympia and after seeing her at the NPC USA contest, I know why. Kristi has never looked better and her physique has really come into its own.

Dexter Jackson’s Jacksonville Pro Figure

This weekend pro figure returns to Florida with the Dexter Jackson Classic. This show marks the return of Mary Lado and Jessica Paxson-Putnam. We haven’t seen either woman compete since the Olympia, last September. Jessica Lyons will be making her pro debut this weekend. She won the second pro card at the NPC Jr USA contest, second only to Lenay Hernandez. Lenay went on to place second in the Houston Pro at her debut, will Jessica have a similar experience? I had the chance to shoot with Kristi Tauti a couple days ago and I’ve never seen her look better. She’s already qualified for the Olympia but had planned on competing in this show for months. Kristal Richardson will return to the stage with a more streamlined look and will be a threat to top spots in this show.

Check back, I’ll be previewing a few competitors throughout the week. The competitor list as of today:

1. Elisa ARCHIBOLD, USA

Photo of the Day: Monique & Jamie

I had a chance to shoot with two of the hottest competitors to rock the NPC USA stage, Monique Minton and Jamie Costa. Monique finished third in the F Class and Jamie won the A Class. Monique will be competing at the Team Universe/Figure Nationals in September. Jamie is now an IFBB pro and where she’ll make her pro debut we’ll have to wait and see. Don’t be surprised if you see her on a pro stage this year.

Go Behind the Scenes at the NPC USAs

Ron Avidan and I go behind the scenes with bodybuilding.com at this year’s NPC USA Championships. Photos are constantly being uploaded throughout the weekend on bodybuilding.com. Check out all the photos from this weekend’s event. Get photos that no other site has and no one gets quite as dorky as the two of us.

Hardbodies in the Desert – NPC USA Figure Update

Last night several women took the stage in hopes of taking a step closer to IFBB Pro status. The NPC USA Figure show was loaded with women in every class. Despite the number of competitors, it was a shared sentiment amongst industry regulars that the show was a little lackluster. There were a handful of women who really stood out but overall it was lacking comparatively speaking to Jr. Nationals and Jr. USAs in terms of quality physiques from top to bottom.

This is how I saw the classes breakdown from a view in the press pit:

A Class
It’s a two woman show here. Akane Nigro-Ismeal and Jamie Costa are the front-runners in this show. While both of the shorties are sporting nicely balanced physiques. I’d give the nod to Jamie for the win here. This is the best she has looked and has found a nice balance with her upper and lower body. Costa makes a strong case for winning the overall title.

B Class
The class will be between Candice Houston, Crystal Lowery and Ann Pratt. I’d call this class – Houston first, Lowery second and Pratt third. Hometown favorite, Candice Houston seemed to be the most complete in this group.

C Class
The toughest class of the show has four women in the mix for the win. Michelle Anderson, Kristin Nunn, Emily Nicholson and Chrissy Burton. I have this class between Michelle Anderson and Kristin Nunn. If you’re a regular on hardbody, you’ll remember I mentioned Kristin after the Jr. USAs. I felt she was overlooked in Charleston with a 12th place finish. She has a fresh face and a balanced physique. She’ll have to go through Michelle Anderson for the win though. Michelle looked a little fuller and less drawn in than she did at the Jr. USAs. I’d have Emily Nicholson in third and Chrissy Burton in fourth.

D Class
The top five in this class look to be Amanda Schenk-Darce, Shelley Hillesheim, Kristy McKinney, Amy Lee Martin, Amanda Quinlan. It looks like it is between Amy Lee Martin and first time USA competitor, Shelley Hillesheim. You saw Shelly profiled here on hardbody earlier in the week. She’s coming off a win at the Master’s Nationals and is in the mix to achieve her goal of pro status. Shelly is a beautiful woman who poses her balanced physiqued in a very poised manner. Amy Lee Martin looks to be at her best and could get the nod over Hillsheim. I’d go Amanda Schenk-Darce in third, Kristy McKinney in the fourth spot and Amanda Quinlan in fifth.

E Class
You could see another hardbodied girl out of Colorado in the top spot here. Jamie Meade is going head to head with Mendi Skamoto for the win. Jamie burst onto the national scene at the Jr. Nationals last month by taking third in this class. Ginny Gardea and Stephanie McDonald will also be in the running for a top spot. A favorite going into the show, Jenny Lewis was a little off and will be out of the top five here. She looked like she needed a rest and may have better suited to compete at Figure Nationals in New York. At this point her physique needs a rest but could be one to watch in the magazines, as she has a unique look.

F Class
When the competitors came out many thought the first name called out would be Monique Minton. She has a tiny waist, blinged out Passion Fruits suit and has a striking look. This Mary Lado lookalike definitely catches your attention. This class had only three names called out for the top spots however Monique’s was not one of them. The three called out were Michelle Battista, Alicia Marie and Rachel Cammon. The tall beauties in their own right. This class will come down to one of the industries top models, Alicia Marie and newcomer Rachel Cammon. Cammon has the goods to take down the super star model in this show. Marie has a stunning look but is better suited for modeling then the pro ranks. I’d give the nod to Cammo over the top model. Rachel and Alicia were excused while Michelle battled it out for a top five spot. Either way the winner of this class will have a beautiful representative in the pros.

I’d say the overall title will come down to the A and the F Class. Who will end up with the overall crown? We’ll find out tonight. Things could change in the two piece round as well though – it ain’t over till it’s over.

NPC USA checkin – Alicia Marie, photos & more…

Last night the USA’s Olympic Men’s basketball Team warmed up for their exhibition game at UNLV. Across campus a different competition was heating up, the USA Bodybuilding & Figure Championships. The weigh-in/check-in took place last night where lots of tan bodies showed up.

I reported earlier this month, one competitor is making some waves off-stage. BSN’s Alicia Marie has been linked to baseball player Alex Rodriquez. When pressed for the scoop last night, Alicia was careful with her words and reiterated the two are just friends. When I asked her about her sharing a room with a dancer in Florida, also linked to A-rod, she laughed. Alicia is dating contorversial baseball player, John Rocker. Don’t be surprised if Mr. Rocker is in attendance this weekend to support the leggy Marie. Alicia told me it’s been difficult at times to prepare for the show but feels ready. There is no denying Alicia has a look that makes you do a double take. Perfect skin tone and striking looks certainly won’t hurt her when she takes the stage tonight.

aliciamarie1.jpg
Alicia Marie is looking for that number one spot.
Check out all the action on bodybuilding.com through out the weekend. The women will be taking the stage after the men’s bodybuilding tonight. Prejudging will start with the A Class if figure tonight, tomorrow morning it will be reversed with the F Class kicking things off.

Photo of the Day: Desha Rodriquez

Around this time last year, one competitor was checking in as an amateur for the last time. That lovely young lady was Florida momma, Desha Rodriquez. I’d seen Desha working the GNC booth numerous times at shows and her striking green eyes always makes you do a double take. Her fellow GNC booth-mate IFBB Figure Pro, Christine Wan has always been one of her biggest supporters. When she told anyone who would listen to watch out for Desha, she was right. Desha won the Figure A Class in 2007 and achieved IFBB pro status. I snapped this little photo of “D” at last year’s check-in.

desha.jpg
Desha Rodriquez was all smiles at the ’07 NPC USAs.

Who will be checking for the last time as an amateur this year? We’ll find out this weekend at the 2008 NPC USA Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada. Tonight the women will check in at around 8pm, at the host hotel Embassy Suites.

Checking in with NPC Figure Contender Alicia “Smiley” Harris

I caught up with one of the top contenders in the NPC USA Figure Championships, Alicia Harris. If you missed my mini-profile on Alicia after the 2008 NPC Jr Nationals, check it out here on hardbody. Alicia made the trip to Las Vegas earlier in the week and is happy to be out of the Chicago humidity.

When I chat with competitors before a show they are usually talking about being tired, hungry or anxious. Ms. Harris on the other hand mentioned no of the above. What was Smiley concentrating on last night? A class paper. Yep, she was finishing a school paper for her sports marketing class. Carb depletion was no excuse to continue on about her daily life. It’s always refreshing to hear a competitor not forget to have a little balance in their life while preparing for a show. Don’t let that fool you though, she is still a focused and determined competitor.

aliciaharris.jpg
Alicia Harris at the ’08 Jr. Nationals.

When asked if she did anything different this time around she and said, “Not really, I just continued to train hard. I’m just going to go out there, have fun and do my best”.

A great attitude to match the top notch physique. Look for Alicia in the Figure D Class when the ladies hit the stage for the Friday night pre-jduging.

Photos of the Day – Check out the Hardbody on Bodysport

One of the best photographers in the biz proves why he is on top with his latest set of images. Terry Goodlad is able to bring out the best in every model and he’s proving it again this month. The newest issue of FLEX features fitness icon Monica Brant in some of the best photos of seen of her in recent years. Check out the gallery on bodysport.com with IFBB pro Melissa Pearo, hands down the best photos I’ve seen of her. This is proof that shooting with a talented photographer does nothing but up your stock in the fitness industry.

Stunning shot of Melissa Pearo by Terry Goodlad.

Shelley Hillesheim – “No rest for the fitness obsessed”

Shelley Hillesheim has found success on the NPC figure stage and isn’t about to look back now. She’s notched another win in her belt by taking top honors in her class at the Master’s Nationals. This mother of two proves that you can accomplish anything you set out to do. She’s an attractive lass who has her sights set on this weekend’s USA Figure Championships. I caught up with Shelly days before leaving for Sin City.

How did it feel to win your class at your first national show?
It felt AMAZING to win my class at my very first national show! Part of my ‘mental game’ for competing is to walk into a show believing that I will win, so I had set an expectation for myself going in. It is always nice to actually fulfill that expectation (and hope). By the way, winning two overall championship titles at a local level in each of the two months prior definitely increased my confidence level going into nationals.

You’re a mom, right? How challenging is it to compete with kids?
Yes, I am a mom. I have two kids – a 5 yr old boy and a 3 yr old girl. It can feel incredibly challenging to juggle the day-to-day family needs with the demands of a serious figure competitor. However, as I better learn to incorporate more of those demands into my life as a true ‘lifestyle’, it feels more balanced and natural. The family is getting used to me exercising a certain number of hours a day and eating foods that they don’t eat. It seems more normal as I continue to compete. It is becoming who I am.

What are your goals for USAs?
Primary goal – win my class and go pro!
Ancillary goal(s) – make viable contacts in the industry to gain exposure for fitness modeling and potential sponsorship opportunities. I’ll be ready at hand with my new comp cards.

Shelley looking to make an impact in Vegas.

How difficult has it been to do as many shows as you have done and continue to have success?
I did my first show this year in May. I’ve done one about every four weeks since. In July, I’m doing two shows back-to-back (one weekend after another). I also have my sights set on another show in September. It has actually proved to be a good pace for me. It’s keeping me focused and on track. Plus, I am sure that winning is helping with continued motivation and momentum. As the saying goes, “success breeds success.” This is true for me.

What words of encouragement do you have for other “masters” women thinking of competing but afraid to do so?
It doesn’t matter your age …know what you want, why you are doing it and do whatever it takes to get it, even when it hurts. My trainer told me early in my time with her that ‘every day counts.’ In this sport, I believe that to be completely true. Everyone trains and competes for different reasons. Simply know YOUR reasons and maintain focus on that reason. Every day that you ponder if you should compete, you are wasting a day of training.

Thanks Shelley and best wishes in Vegas!

Europa Super Show – Fitness & Figure Competitor Lists

The ladies show is loading up with competitors for the 2008 Europa Super Show. The event will take place on August 15-16, 2008 in Dallas, Texas. There are a number of the same competitors in the fitness event that competed earlier in Houston. Will Moe and Shemp… errr Tracey Greenwood and Shannon Meteraud be back to battle it out? Despite not being on the list (they are rumored to be busy arguing over their respective stooges names) they will be competing in the fitness.

Iris Kyle on ABC’s Wipeout

Despite the announcers calling Ms. Olympia a “he” in the preview, this is pretty funny. Ms. Olympia WIPES OUT!

NPC USA PREVIEW

Click on over to my preview of this weekend’s NPC USA contest. Promoter Jon Lindsay promised me a six pack of Diet Coke here on hardbody and I’ll need it! This is going to be one hot show. Please note if I didn’t mention your name, it’s nothing personal. I know one competitor I totally spaced when writing the preview is Michelle Anderson. She took fourth in her class at Jr. USAs and I look for her to be in the top call-outs at this show. My dark horse in this show is Kristin Nunn, watch out for her as she has a physique that is off the chain. The C Class looks to be the toughest line-up of the whole show. Whoever wins that could go on to win the overall. There are also a number of women who did very well last weekend at the Masters and could shake things up at this show, like Ann Pratt.

Check out my entire preview here.

The Joy of Fred – Design Brilliance

I ran across Fred’s site today and it stood out for it’s clever simplicity. As a designer at heart, I appreciate things that are well designed and more often than not, less is more. Check out the website “Worldwide Fred”. They have some of the coolest little gadgets I’ve ever seen. Below are a few of my favorites from their site.

shapeup_648.jpg

SHAPE UP!â„¢ wake up with a workout
This dumbbell-style alarm wants to start your day off right! Just set the alarm and in the morning it will buzz until you’ve done 30 reps. Annoying? Maybe. Effective? Unquestionably! Shape Up! is the perfect gift for sleepy-heads. Individual recyclable clear boxes.

toastednotes_648.jpg

TOASTED NOTESâ„¢ the hot buttered desk accessory!
This piping hot slice of toast is pretty hard to miss on your desktop, so you’ll always be able to put your fingers on a buttery little self-stick note when you need one. Old Fred really wanted to call it “toast-it notes” but he just doesn’t want to deal with another lawyer. Whatever happened to America’s sense of humor? Toasted Notes comes with 5 handy pads in each peggable clamshell.

saltandpeeper_648.jpg

SALT & PEEPERâ„¢ a bird in the hand
This little peeper just wants to please. Turn his head to the right — his eyes change from blue to white and his beak dispenses salt; turn it left — his eyes turn black and of course his beak pours the pepper. Peggable recyclable clear boxes.

You can find out where to purchase these items and more on their site. There’s a ton more that is worth checking out. Design Brilliance at it’s finest.

Five Red Flags to Keep in Mind

It happens all the time and in every industry. Someone wants to sound more important and relevant then they really are. In the fitness industry it is no different and I’ve been hearing/seeing it become more prevelant. It tends to happen around bigger shows like this weekend’s USA contest, where many false promises and guarantees are thrown around. Here are five red flags to not only keep an eye out for this weekend but also at any time.

RED FLAG #1 – Print Promises
If someone promises you they can get you in a magazine, they are lying. Unless they are the editor of the magazine no one can promise you they will get you published. Huge red flag if someone promises you to get you in print. They can say they will try and can pitch you to a mag but even those with regular columns have their work editing. Their is never a guarantee when it comes to getting published. If someone says they are shooting a cover for a major magazine, they are usually full of it. The magazines more often than not have staff or contracted photographers who do their covers. Some magazines (the lesser circulated ones) will put spec work on covers but if it’s for Oxygen, Muscle and Fitness Hers, Flex, Muscle and Fitness, Inside Fitness, Muscle Mag… chances are you’ve heard of the photographer. Don’t be fooled into thinking Joe Schmoe No Name is going to put you on the cover of a legit magazine when you’ve never seen their work published in the mag before.

RED FLAG #2 – Wannabe “Gurus” / Trainers
Just because you work with a specific trainer doesn’t entitle you to a top placing. Many women will work with specific trainers with the sole intent of thinking it will place them higher. You still need to do the work. On the flip side, be very weary of trainers who want to take credit for competitor’s success. A good trainer will encourage you and may tell others they worked with you however if someone is writing that they are on your team and you didn’t agree to it, red flag. If someone is telling others that without you, you wouldn’t have done well, red flag. You may have gotten there a little quicker with the right guidance but you still did the work. If some one is telling others that they trained you when you did well but they aren’t when you didn’t place well, red flag. There are many wannabe “gurus” and they will latch onto a competitor’s success with the intent of being more relevant in the industry. Talk with competitors who have worked with the trainer both present and past before agreeing to be on any “Team”. Just because a pro or a big name person recommends them doesn’t mean they are great either.

RED FLAG #3 – Not all people who carry big lenses are good photographers
Don’t be fooled this weekend or at any show by guys or girls carrying around cameras with big lenses. The size of the lense doesn’t equate to the quality of the photos. I’ve seen a creative person take better shots with a camera phone then someone sporting a big fancy schmancy camera. Don’t agree to shoot with someone on the spot unless you know who they are, seen their work or were recommended by a close friend who you trust. There will be many people shooting competitors this weekend and many are legit in the industry however some are not. Trust your gut and don’t do anything you’re not comfortable doing. It’s easier to say no, then to regret something and have to deal with it later.

RED FLAG #4 – Name Droppers
If someone is telling you how they photographed this top pro or this top model, be cautious. Most good photographers don’t need to name drop. If you ask them who they’ve shot and they tell you that is different then them approaching you and trying to be super fly with their roster. Just because someone shot a top pro or a model you may admire, doesn’t make them legit. There are plenty of women who regret shooting with a photographer for one reason or another. Some people will try to have credibility by dropping names but again be weary if that is one of the first things out of their mouths.

RED FLAG #5 – Bashers
If someone only bashes people and never has anything positive to say about others, red flag. This is a very image driven industry and many times people place their self worth into their placings or what others think of them. That doesn’t mean you should always be negative or complain. There are plenty of positives and great things about the industry. Watch out for the bashers, they will only bring you down. Watch out for competitors who only bitch about other competitors, their trainers, “politics” or pass blame. Sure shit happens and there is always something we could all complain about however if that is what you constantly hear, red flag. If you ask someone their opinion and it’s not what you want to hear that’s not always being negative. You all know the people I am talking about. You typically see them come out after a show when they didn’t win. It’s not just competitors – it’s photographers, trainers, boyfriends, husbands, family, friends, etc. Watch out for anyone who bashes more then they are positive with their words.

If you have any red flags you’ve experienced and like to share with the readers, post ’em up in the comments field below.
