Former UFC Ring Girl Ali Sonoma Enters New Bikini Division

alisonoma.jpg
Ali Sonoma will participate in the first Arnold Bikini Division.

San Diego’s Ali Sonoma is a perfect example of what the new bikini division brings to the table. Striking good looks, toned physique but not overly muscular. She works out, eats right and has aspirations of making a difference in the world of fitness. I had a chance to chat with Ali as she heads into her first competition. What made this former UFC ring girl enter the Arnold Bikini competition? Find out the answers to this as well as what it’s like dating one of the top UFC fighters below.

You currently live in Cali but where did you grow up?
St. Louis, MOali2.jpg

How many NPC competitions have you competed in?
The Arnold Classic next week will be my very first one! I’m very excited!

What made you decide to compete in the Arnold Bikini Competition?
I was at Mr. Olympia last year and was really amazed at how the competitors looked. I saw the figure women on stage and was just in awe. I said to myself, I would love to do that someday, it would be such a rewarding self challenge to get your body at it’s best. So I went for it. I found a great trainer, (Kim Oddo), and he told me about the new bikini division. I started training immediately.

What are your competitions goals this year?
I would love to get my pro card, become a spokemodel for a few supplement /nutrition companies and continue to look and feel my best.

You mentioned you enlisted the help of Kim Oddo with your diet/nutrition, how has that experience so far?
I couldn’t have done it without Kim! I wouldn’t have a clue where to begin without a professional, especially one of the best in the business. He laid out everything-my diet, supplements, times I should eat, portion control, lifting schedule, etc.

I read somewhere that you like to fish and shoot guns, is that true?
Ha ha, sure is! I’m from Missouri so I’m naturally a country girl at heart and I’m not afraid to get a little dirty.

Some people may not know but you were a ring girl for the UFC. What was that experience like?
It was a great experience for me. I was with them for a year and traveled to many places. I am still a huge fan of the fights and always will be.

Do you get nervous thinking about the competition or is it a walk in the park for you now?
I might be a little nervous considering it’s my first one, but I think I’ll be more excited than anything.

Do you weight train?
Yes.

What a bikini competitor that works out? Get out. What type of training do you follow?

I weight train just about everyday. I alternate upper and lower body. I do light-med weight, high reps, at high intensity. I love lifting, so much more than cardio! ali1.jpg

Do you work out solo or with a training partner?
I work out solo and I take it very seriously. I go to the gym to train, sweat, and work hard. I don’t like any distractions.

How is it dating a UFC fighter (Ali is dating UFC Fighter Diego Sanchez)… Does he help motivate you in the gym or can be a distraction while preparing for your own show?
Diego Sanchez is not just a UFC fighter, he’s so much more. He’s my very best friend and I have learned so much from him since being with him. He’s very knowledgeable in nutrition, training, diet, meditation, recovery, supplements, I could go on and on. I started eating all organic food because of him, and started taking up better habits like cutting aspartame, anything artificial, anything processed, etc. It’s a plus being with him because he helps to train and motivate me-yesterday we did sprints until our legs were about to fall off. ha ha! He believes in me and I in him. I am always the loudest, craziest one at his fights and he’ll be right there watching me on stage as my number 1 fan.

A number of women have taken up MMA classes are you one of them or leave that to Diego?

I love kickboxing and would love to someday take up Muy Thai and Jui-Jitzsu. I love to feel strong.

What do you plan on eating after the competition – birthday cake? (Ali’s Birthday falls on the Arnold Classic Weekend)
Ha ha, YES! Chocolate and some red wine! It’s been so long!ali3.jpg

What advice do you have for women out there thinking of doing their first competition?

Get a great trainer! You get what you pay for.

If people want to find out more info about you where should they go?
My myspace page is the best way to contact me www.myspace.com/alisonoma

Any one you want to thank or give a shout out to?
First and foremost, I want to thank God for blessing me in so many ways-all the glory goes to him, the Creator. I would also like to thank Kim Oddo, my family, fans and the love of my life Diego.

Thanks Ali and best of luck in Columbus.
Thank you.

The Arnold Bikini competition will take place in Columbus, Ohio on Thurday, March 6th. Competition starts at 7pm.

Adela Garcia has a knack for finding amusing videos on Youtube lately. Here is her latest video recommendation, which is pretty cute.

Happy Birthday Dina Al-Sabah

A big shout out to Dina Al-Sabah who will is celebrating her birthday today. Dina hasn’t been on the competitive stage in couple years but can still be seen in many of the fitness magazines. Most recently she was on the cover of IRONMAN magazine. Happy Birthday Dina!

Eminem, Dr. Dre & 50 Cent’s Crack a Bottle is today’s song of the day. “Don’t act like a snobby model”

Felicia is Feel’n It

I caught up with IFBB Figure competitor and cover model Felicia Romero one week out from the Figure International to see how she was doing. Felicia tells me she is feeling great and looking forward to the show. She’s happy that the women’s event is held on one day and who can blame her? Many times shows have prejuding on one night and finals on another. This can often be challenging for competitors to hold their conditioning.

When asked if she’d be going for one of the Heart Attack Grill burgers, since she lives in Arizona, and she assured me that would not be on the plan. Fans can stop by the GAT booth and meet her at the Arnold Expo

Good luck Felicia!

Raid on the Hen House

Most of the industry experts have Jen Hen winning the Fitness International next weekend. A whopping 81% of the votes have gone to Jen here on the hardbody poll. Can anyone break into that top spot in Hendershott’s home state of Ohio? It will be tough but don’t rule it out. Julie Palmer and Tracey Greenwood will be pecking at her heels. Might Jen feel like this bird is already in the bag and come in over-confident? Is it a three person race like most are making it out to be or can someone else crack into the mix?

One week from today we’ll find out.

IFBB Fitness Pro Anna Level Back on Stage

annalevel.jpg
Anna performing her fitness routine.

I caught up with IFBB Fitness Pro Anna Level recently and she tells me she’ll be back on the fitness stage. Well, let me clarify… she’ll be back on stage as a guest performer at The Diamond Classic on April 25, 2009. The last time we saw Anna on the competitive stage was the 2004 Fitness Olympia, where she placed 10th.

Will she return to IFBB Fitness competition? You’ll have to wait and see.

Brant Back for Her 8th Arnold

I received this update from Monica Brant this morning via her newsletter.

Arnold Fitness Weekend and the Figure International
This will mark my 15th appearance working at the Arnold Expo – 1995 being my first trip! I have worked for companies in the past such as: Parillo Performance, EAS, Jan Tana, Weider Nutrition, Universal Nutrition, BB.Com and BSN.

The years all seem to blur now when I try to recall certain years or situations! There have been so many fun memories and wonderful people that I have met over the course of time…hard to recall which year was which!

This year also marks my 8th time on stage…(2) Fitness Internationals and (6) Figure Internationals! I am completely honored to be invited once again and am excited to let everyone know that I am still around!
With all the rumors floating through the internet/mags about my retiring…it will be nice to tell everyone in person that I haven’t retired yet! Seriously, I never told anyone that I did…it was just speculation on the media’s part!

If you are attending the event and I hear that many of you are, please be sure to stop by and see me at the BNRG booth on SATURDAY and the BB.COM booth on SUNDAY.  I will be signing/selling autographed 8x10s, my fit book and have my fun ladies shirts/tanks available for purchase too! Of course as always, snapshots with fans are FREE! Be sure to bring your cameras and extra batteries!

Best of Luck Mo and we’ll see you in Columbus!

The Evil Look from Adela

Top IFBB Pro Adela Garcia shares another one of her favorite Youtube videos with us. “The Evil Look” is pretty cute. We’re beginning to think Adela may be addicted to youtube.

1 Week to Go – An Improved Hernandez is Ready for the Arnold

lenay.jpg
IFBB Figure Pro Lenay Hernandez
Lenay has been counting down the days to the Figure International since she sent in her application. She is one of the most positive, up-beat women you’ll meet in the industry. Always sporting a smile and not afraid to show her sassy side. One week from today she’ll be in Columbus on the eve of her first Arnold competition. Lenay tells me she has a new one piece suit and feels amazing. She trains with Nelson Almerico in Florida and they’ve focused on refining her physique for this show. Little Miss Hernandez shared, “My delts are a little rounder and my quads have improved since the Olympia. I am ready and cannot wait to step on the prestigious Arnold stage. Oh and get that cupcake you owe me since the O!”
Lenay is like a little kid. Don’t promise to treat them to something and not follow through. I had told her I’d get her a cupcake if she made it to the Olympia and she did however I failed to deliver the cupcake. I won’t make that mistake again as she hasn’t let me live it down since September. HAHA.
This is the woman you need to keep an eye on to shake things up in the top 6. She’s featured in the newest Bodyshop in FLEX magazine this month as well. Check it out on shelves now and check her our on stage next week.

This one was recommended by a loyal hardbody reader, T.I. – Dead and Gone (feat. Justin Timberlake). It’s not too shabby. Give it a listen.

One of the good guys in the bodybuilding/fitness industry, Allan Donnelly continues to move up at FLEX magazine. I’ve had the pleasure to work with Allan since he started with FLEX and he’s always been supportive of the women in the biz. Congrats Allan.

Julie Palmer is Ready to Rock

I caught up with Julie Palmer as she nears another Fitness International. Julie tells me she is doing great and feels really good. She shares, “I am ready to ROCK in Columbus. I love the Arnold so I get really amped for this show.” Look for an improved routine from Julie at this show. She always fairs well in the physique rounds and if she moves up a bit in the routine rounds watch for her to be in contention for that top spot.

Best of luck Julie and we’ll see you in Columbus next week!

Arcinas Arnold Update

IFBB Pro Huong Arcinas checks in and shares she is ready with about a week to go. She’s been working on her posing and stage presence. Huong also shared she has new suits on the way that are being made by fitswim-byceleste.com. This lil Cali Momma is ready!

Beat the BS

This is an interesting approach by the folks at NIKE Ashoka. They have created “GAMECHANGERS” which encourage people to “change the game for women everywhere”. The video below intentionally features stereotypes that have prevented women from equality in sports. Stating things like, “Their weak minds match their weak bodies. So more sports scholarships are given to boys.”

Think this will help?

Oksana Grishina Wallpaper of the Week

Download the Oksana Grishina Wallpaper for your desktop. I took this shot at the 2008 Fitness International and it is one that you have to look more than once to appreciate. Yes, she is balancing on only one hand in the middle of her evening routine. Simply amazing!

Oksana will be competing next weekend at this year’s Fitness International once again. Best of luck Oksana.

Iron Sirens Issue # 4 will be for sale exclusively at the Tight Curves booth at the Arnold Expo. Jimmy Mentis and Tom Richardson helped make that happen. There will be a few feature packages with all four issues available for a discounted price of $20 at the Arnold. This is a bargain for comic book fans. Issue #4 wraps up the current story line and sets it off into a new one at the end. Fans can have Kristal autograph their copy at the Tight Curves booth and then venture to the GNC booth for Adela and Sonia’s signatures. Jenny Lynn and Gina Aliotti can be found at the Europa Sports Product booth throughout the weekend if you’re looking to snag their autograph as well.Which Siren will come out on top at the Arnold stage? We’ll have to wait until next week to find out.

Boogie Bear joins the Richardson Family

Here is one of the more adorable photos you’ll see.

kristaldog.jpg
Kristal and Boogie Bear chill’n poolside.

IFBB Figure Pro Kristal Richardson tells me there is a new addition to the Richardson/Tight Curves Family. This 8 week-old chocolate lab named Boogie Bear joins his older brother Boomer at their Florida home. The little guy won’t be little for too long. He’s already tipping the scales at 16lbs.

Kristal is currently prepping for a return to the Figure International stage. She’s coming off a top ten finish at the Olympia and is ready to rock in Columbus.

Head to the Heart Attack Grill after your Next Show

Anyone who has been around the world of competing or competed themselves knows that the meal after the show is a coveted one. Competitors often crave pizza, donuts, chocolate or maybe a margarita. I’ve competed twice and for me it was pizza. Well that and nearly every other thing on the menu at The Cheesecake Factory. Those of you living near Chandler, Arizona have a different place you may want to visit after a show. You may never want to return but it does look like the kind of destination worth checking out at least once. That place is The Heart Attack Grill. Yes, it prides itself on being unhealthy and their tag line is “taste worth dying for”. If you’re over 350lbs you eat free… All day – every day. You do have to weigh-in before they will serve you if you’re in that category.

heartattackmenu.jpg
The menu at The Heart Attack Grill.

Disturbing? Absolutely. I wouldn’t recommend making it a staple of your daily meal plan. Would I check it out once? Ya and hopefully I’d live to share about it.

Learn more about this bizarre place in the video below:

Hardbody Song of the Day: Hurt – Rapture

This is the acoustic version of Hurt’s song Rapture. I’m diggin it.

Here’s the version you may have heard on the radio.

Julie Ann Kulla feature in Muscle & Fitness

Check out the April 2009 issue of Muscle & Fitness magazine on shelves now. Bruce Lee is featured on the cover and on the inside is a great piece with IFBB Pro Julie Ann Kulla. One year ago she wasn’t even a pro and now she’s gracing the pages of Muscle & Fitness. We’ll be seeing Julie Ann back on stage at some point this year.

julieann.jpg
April 2009 Muscle & Fitness

Oh and the lead-in photo to the article was snapped by yours truly. It was a hot ass day in Vegas when we shot but Julie Ann was great to work with and fun to photograph. Congrats Julie Ann!

Greenwood is a Go

IFBB Fitness Pro Tracey Greenwood has been keeping a relatively low profile going into the Fitness International. What? Greenwood quiet? What the hell is going on, is she ok? HA. Yes, she is doing very well. I caught up with Tracey yesterday and she tells me she is ready to go. She tells me she’s the smallest she’s ever been, in great shape and has a new routine. Tracey sounds confident that this will be her best Arnold performance to date. She’s coming off her best year as a pro finishing second to Jen Hendershott at the 2008 Olympia. When I asked her if she would beat Jen this time she said, “Isaac that’s not for me to decide you know that. I will bring my best and that’s all I can do.”

We’ll see how Tracey fairs next Friday but you can count on her being in the mix.

Adela Garcia Recommends Booty Aerobics

What do competitors do when they are dieting and carb-depleted? If you’re IFBB Pro Adela Garcia you amuse yourself with youtube videos. Adela sent me this video and it is hilarious. If you’re attending the Arnold Classic next weekend, make sure you stop by the GNC booth and ask her for a booty aerobics demonstration.

Hardbody Song of The Day: The Ting Tings – Shut Up and Let Me Go

I’d only heard this song once or twice and ran across it again via a link on GENEX’s Facebook updates. Gene updates his status regularly with good stuff, usually from around San Fran. The Ting Tings – Shut Up and Let Me Go is one of those songs that sticks in your head after hearing it.

Check out genexmagazine.com if you’re a fan of female muscle. Gene, Hans and James have been supporters of the women in the industry for a long time.

Hardbody Huong’s Arnold Update

huong.jpg
Huong Arcinas is ready for Columbus.

IFBB Figure Pro Huong Arcinas checks in days out from the Figure International.

Huong shares:
Despite being loaded with tons of caffeine these days, I fell like a total zombie. I hit my goal weight ( anyone care to guess??) and just cruising now. I look great and this Cali momma is ready to roll out to Columbus in 9 days.

Bikini Coaching/Training?

I’ve been seeing it pop up more and more online. Numerous trainers are promoting that they are teaching women how to prepare for the new NPC bikini division. I’m curious how those of you who are trainers and coaches are approaching this considering there has yet to be a show. I’m not saying it isn’t necessary however my concern is how can you teach some one to do well in bikini when there has yet to be a show take place? If it is working on stage presentation, great! This is definitely something that every competitor could and should work on. Tanning, suit selection, shoes, make-up and hair are all things that should be given attention to but until the presidence is set by the judges about all there is to go off from is what FLEX magazine awarded in their bikini model search.
Sound off if you’re helping women prep for the bikini division.
