New Zealand Pro

The New Zealand Pro Figure and Pro Bikini will take place on March 20, 2010. I’ve heard from a few women who will be making the trip down under for this event however no official list is out as of yet. This will be the first official pro bikini event, although I’d hold off on any speculation on the direction of IFBB Pro Bikini until after the MuscleContest pro bikini show.

McDonald’s Offering Oatmeal for Breakfast

McDonald’s isn’t on many top 10 healthy breakfast lists. The Golden Arches are offering oatmeal as a healthy alternative for breakfast but it’s only available in Baltimore and Washington. The oatmeal sells for just under two bucks and you can have apples, raisins and cranberries added. Can’t hate on them for offering a healthy option to their menu. I hope they offer it in all locations as it would at least provide something, somewhat healthy on the menu for those on the go.

Countdown to C-Bus with Erin Stern

It’s the final countdown with IFBB Figure Pro Erin Stern as she heads into Columbus. We’re just days away from the 2010 Figure International. A new champion will be crowned, might it be Erin Stern?

erinsterncbus

I finished up the last of my heavier weight workouts today..with less than a week to go, it’s time to cut carbs and start some high-rep burnout workouts. I’d rather go through the toughest leg workout, or do 200M repeats on the track than these depletion workouts…but it’s all about gutting it out now! I haven’t started packing for the trip yet, or done any cooking. These things are best done when in a diet-induced, zombie-like state, right??

This week I realized (again) that no one can prepare for a show alone – we need feedback, reassurance, and support. I’m good with doing my own workouts and diet…but the finer details…not so much! My parents’ neighbors, have volunteered to help me with posing and presentation. They helped me get ready for NPC Nationals..and it has been a while since they had seen me pose. “She’s walking like a football player again,” I heard Chuck say. Oh boy, we have some work to do. Even though I have developed my alter ego, Egylo, she hasn’t really made her way from my imagination to practical application! After a few sessions, I’m feeling much better about my stage presence.

I have been experimenting with my stage make-up, and I probably should do this at night…when I’m not leaving the house. Instead, I wake up, and paint up my eyes…you know, to try it out. Maybe this is part of the dieting, to try and keep my mind off of cutting calories? Whatever the reason, I’m pretty sure I’m scaring the people at my local gym. I forget that I’m all painted up, and I go in for my weight workouts – I am getting leaner, and now…I look like a vampire. Fantastic.

This week I’m also reminded that I’ll get feedback from good and bad sources. It’s up to me to choose what information I keep in my head. Dieting makes dealing with things more difficult…if I let it! I decided to write down something else in case I get forgetful (again) – the main reason why I compete – because it makes me happy.

MMA with Momo – UFC 110 Recap

momomma

Hey guys,

Last weekend was awesome! Great fights and the UFC is getting better every day. The event in Australia was a great success they sold out all their tickets in the first day and the UFC is the most watch pay per view event.  If you’ve never watched it before, the next UFC event is in Broomfield Colorado and will be awesome plus it’s FREE.  This event will be shown on the VERSUS channel March 21, 2010 at 9p.m. ET.  The card will is very exciting and one of my favorite fighters, Pilipino Brandon Vera will be fighting Jon Jones, in my opinion Brandon Vera beat Couture on their last fight but they gave it to Couture. But this Jones guy is so tough his last fight he ran over a wrestling guy (in the octagon) and beat him up so bad that if I was the guy I would just go back to school.  Besides that fight they will have my close friend Junior “cigano” dos santos fighting Napao, great fight. Two Brazilian warriors fighting to show their country who is the king hahahha.  Sheik Congo will be fighting paul buttelo, also James Irving, Clay Guida and many others so  it will be good.

Now going back to what happened last week on the UFC 110 Nogueira vc Velasquez.
Cain knocked out my friend Nogueira, I was very said, but I admired Cain complements to Nogueira after the fight and the fact that he was a extra humble guy.

Silva won by unanimus decision over Bisping – I was very happy cause I don’t like Bisping because he is too full of himself so I was very happy. hahah

George Sotiropulos beat Joe Daddy Steverson – I thought he was gonna lose based on his last name.  I guess the lesson is never judge a book by its cover.

Cro Cop beat Perosh – By brutal man handling force! I felt sorry for perosh but give him 10 for the efford!

Krysztof TKO Bonnar – I guess people from my mom’s country are tough no wonder my mom beat us up hard. hahahha

Chis leg lock Foster – To show that Brazilian jiu-jitsu is still very effective

CB Dollaway beat Rejic – Good fight but cb need to work out more upper buddy, he looks like a 15 year old boy!

Walk with Watson – The Final Round

The response to IFBB Figure Pro Andrea Watson’s “Walk with Watson” has been great. Thanks to Andrea for sharing her candid, honest thoughts along the way. She’ll be taking the pro stage for the first time next Friday and she’ll be one to watch. Join me in wishing her good luck! Here is the final installment of Walk with Watson. Let us know in the comments field if you’d like to hear more from Andrea after the Arnold.

The Final Stretch!!!!

Holy mole peeps, we’re entering the home stretch…thank you Jesus…I am finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel!  My evenings now consist of me walking around the house with my posing suit on and Brian shooing me out of the way because I’m blocking his view of American Idol!  Sheesh, I’m half naked man, look at me damn it! Tell me if my butt still looks fat, if I’m still holding water in my back or if you can see my abs. My little pinkie toes are squished and hanging on for dear life because they’re forced into my new clear heals… so I decide to put on some socks to stretch them bad boyz out!!!

I am dreading this weekend because there is so much I must get accomplished.  For one, I have to give myself a bikini wax… yes, I do my own because I don’t just let anyone see my golden gates of heaven…this is one of the most painful things about prepping for a competition! I debate on whether or not I should just shave the Thursday before the show but then I think to myself, sista!, Are you crazy? Don’t you remember you’re half Filipino and Italian and God has blessed you with so much hair…too much hair…then I get a vision in my head of me showing up on stage on Friday with a Chia Pet that has grown 10 inches in the middle of the night and is now waving at the judges! Yikes!  Better do the wax!

My dear mother is constantly on my case about whether or not I’m losing the weight and if I am going to be ready for the show. She even bought me a Tony Little No Impact glute workout DVD from Food World because she is trying to help!  Bless her little heart. She has said so many Rosarys for me over the past few months that I think I have enough blessings to carry me and every competitor in the NPC and IFBB into the next lifetime! Just picture a little Filipino woman (smaller than me) saying (note the accent please), “Andria, I don’t see dose little bumps (muscles) in your back like I did at your pirst show….hab you been doing your butt DBD dat I bought you?  Hab you been sticking to your diet?  Your butt is big.”

The purse that I carry around with me the last month reminds me of something Inspector Gadget would carry around…if he was a figure competitor. It is not a fancy Coach or Luis Vuitton, no people, it is a bright yellow, nylon $8 TJ Maxx special, which has numerous pockets, zippers, hiding places, etc.  In any given day it holds my iPod, 3 packs of sugar free gum, empty orange roughy, chicken, or asparagus baggies, tanning lotion, deodorant, clean panties – just in case, baby wipes, etc.  The other day I was at Publix checking out, spending half an hour looking for my wallet that was mysteriously hidden in there somewhere….when all of a sudden a disgusting, dirty, smelly gym sock falls out.  But wait a minute!!!!  To my surprise I see a little piece of heaven sitting at the bottom of my Inspector Gadget purse…is it a purple skittle?….a M&M?…I quickly grab it, sniff it and pop that baby into my mouth!  Ha, ha little sucker, can’t escape little mama…to my pleasure it was a delicious Reeses Pieces left over from a couple of months ago…I had just experienced a tingle inside of me that I had not felt in a long time…who cares about the nasty sock and the look of disgust on the cashier’s face?

Well folks, this has been the toughest prep for me. I have faced many challenges since last July: from having surgery, to the doctors finding cancer in my appendix, gaining 20 pounds out of depression, rushing Sam to the puppy ER because of her heart condition and being told to make preparations for her death, dealing with the recent loss of loved ones, and a few other issues that are too personal to list. I could have given up many times but I decided to go on and finish what I started. I have grown so much spiritually this last year and I know that my faith will get me through anything and everything.

Through this short journey of mine, I have learned to be a fighter and a very positive person. This sport has given me the strength to see just how much I am capable of doing. I may not have the perfect body or be the best on that stage in Columbus but I am proud of what I have accomplished. I have worked so hard and given 110% each and every day. I can say without a doubt that there is nothing else I could have done leading up to the show to bring a better package. In the end, my placing is out of my hands and in the fate of the judges.

Thank you for following me along my journey.  Thank you for all of the e-mails, comments, and encouragement.  Now, to my fellow competitors…HEELS ON LADIES, IT’S STAGE TIME!!! GO HOBBIT, GO HOBBIT, GO HOBBIT!!!!  HEEEEEEEEE HAAAAAAW Y’ALL LOOK OUT COLUMBUS HERE THIS COUNTRY GIRL COMES!!!!

P.S.  I will be working at the Met-Rx booth on Saturday and Sunday so please feel free to stop by and shower me with pans of eggplant parmesan, any type of sweet, or just food in general! Tee hee.

GOD BLESS, I WISH YOU ALL OF THE BEST IN 2010!

Jessica Paxson-Putnam Joins Hardbody Team

Welcome our newest contributor, IFBB Figure Pro and Fitness Model Jessica Paxson-Putnam. Jessica has been featured in numerous magazines as well as their covers. She was last year’s Jacksonville Pro Figure champion and is a sponsored by Optimum Nutrition. Those of you attending the Arnold Sports Festival can meet Jess at the Optimum Nutrition booth. We’re excited to have Jess as a Hardbody contributor.

justjess

Hello everyone! I want to thank Isaac with Hardbody.com for inviting me to contribute to the site! I will be covering a variety of different topics ranging from diet/training, to photos hoot tips, relationships, and faith. You name it, I will cover it! Please respond to my posts and let me know if you have any questions or topics you would like me to cover! Or you can email me at Jess@JessFit.com.

The first topic I want to cover is “healthy eating”. As fitness enthusiasts and competitors we all know what it means to eat healthy. Some of you may be like me though, and while I can easily grill or bake a chicken breast with some Mrs. Dash on it, I have never been much of a cook.

I really had no desire to try and cook a healthy meal, mostly because my husband is also a competitor and we eat pretty bland simple foods most of the time. Lately I’ve become interested in trying healthy recipes. Peter and I plan on having a family one day and I’m sure the kids might get tired of bland chicken after awhile! I’m thankful my hubby likes to cook also, so we have been trying out quite a few fun healthy dishes as of late. I wanted to share one of the recipes we tried the other night. It is a Rachel Ray recipe, but I changed it up to make it my own:

MUSHROOM, SPINACH, AND GOAT CHEESE STUFFED CHICKEN

Ingredients
– 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, 6 ounces
– Large plastic food storage bags or waxed paper
– 1 package, 10 ounces, frozen chopped spinach
– 12 small mushroom caps, crimini or button
– 2 cloves garlic, cracked (I used the canned chopped garlic)
– Chopped onion
– Salt and freshly ground black pepper
– Crumbled goat cheese (as much as you want)
– 1 cup Fat free Parmesan cheese
– Can of fire roasted tomatoe or sun-dried tomatos
– 1/2 teaspoon fresh grated or ground nutmeg
– 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
– Toothpicks

*We didn’t make it with the sauce and it still tasted great!

Sauce:
– 2 tablespoons butter
– 2 tablespoons flour
– 1/2 cup white wine
– 1 cup chicken broth

Directions

Place breasts in the center of a plastic food storage bag or 2 large sheets of waxed paper. Pound out the chicken from the center of the bag outward using a heavy-bottomed skillet or mallet. Be firm but controlled with your strokes.
Defrost spinach in the microwave. Transfer spinach to a kitchen towel. Twist towel around spinach and wring it out until very dry. Transfer to a medium-mixing bowl.

Place a nonstick skillet over moderate heat. When skillet is hot add  chopped mushrooms, garlic and onion. Season with salt and pepper and saute 5 minutes.Transfer to the mixing bowl, adding the mushrooms to the spinach. Add goat cheese, grated cheese, and tomatos to the bowl and the nutmeg. Stir to combine the stuffing. Return your skillet to the stove over medium high heat.

Place a mound of stuffing on each breast and wrap and roll breast over the stuffing. Secure breasts with toothpicks. Add 3 tablespoons oil to the pan, 3 turns of the pan. Add breasts to the pan and brown on all sides, cooking chicken 10 to 12 minutes. The meat will cook quickly because it is thin. Remove breasts; add butter to the pan and flour. Cook butter and flour for a minute, whisk in wine and reduce another minute. Whisk in broth and return breasts to the pan. Reduce heat and simmer until ready to serve. Remove toothpicks. Serve breasts whole or, remove from pan, slice on an angle and fan out on dinner plates. Top stuffed chicken breasts or sliced stuffed breasts with generous spoonfuls of the sauce.

I ended up putting them in the oven for 30-45 min b/c the chicken breasts were big. You could serve this with brown rice also. Here is a picture of the finished product…The wine is optional 😉

Stay fit and God bless!

Take Action to Save Supplements

I’ve mentioned the new bill before but this is a reminder that this can and will effect all of us if it passes. Visit saveoursupplements.org to help do your part to prevent this bill from passing.

New legislation in the U.S. Senate would mandate that every dietary supplement would have to go through a brand new process of government review in order to stay on the market.

If this bill, S. 3002, the Dietary Supplement Safety Act, becomes law your health care choices will be drastically reduced, and many of the supplements available today will become illegal. This and other provisions of this misguided legislation affect ALL dietary supplements, including vitamins, minerals, herbs, sports, and diet products.

Arnold Interview: Sylvia Tremblay’s Pro Debut

IFBB Fitness Pro Sylvia Tremblay has been competing for thirteen years but this year will be her first as an IFBB Pro. Next Friday, she’ll take the Fitness International stage and compete against some of the world’s best fitness competitors during the Arnold Sports Festival. I caught up with the high flying Canadian one week out from her pro debut.

sylvia

Name: Sylvia Tremblay

From: Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Years Competing: 13 years

How did you get started in Fitness?
It was 1996 when I saw my very first fitness competition on TV – The Fitness Olympia. I was amazed by the level of athleticism and shape the girls had. At that time we didn’t have fitness competitions here in Quebec but I was still really interested in this sport. In April 1997 I learned that CBBF would have there first fitness competition in Quebec. 6 weeks later I was on stage competing for the first time! I thought it was going to be my one and only show, look what happened!

What made you switch from competing in other organizations to the IFBB?
Good question. I think I was just ready for it. When I started 13 years ago I was competing with CBBF which is the Canadian federation related to IFBB. At that time I was very small shape wise and I didn’t have the muscle maturity that I have now so I decided to take my chance with other organizations. In 2008, I felt I had finally achieved the look they were
looking for so I decided to give it a try. I was also ready for my pro card.

As a past Arnold Amateur champ what advice do you have for the other amateur fitness competitors competing in the Arnold?
Stay focused on your goals and never let anyone tell you that you can’t make it. Believe in yourself and never give up, work, work, work as hard as you can.

What’s your a typical day like for you?
I get up at 6am, do my morning cardio, then I eat and go to my computer to have a look and reply my customer’s e-mails.

All morning I work on creating, designing and sewing suits. In the afternoon I go to the gym for my training and routine practice and get back home for more work that will continue in the evening very often.

I eat every 3 hours and go to bed around 10pm

What can fans expect to see from you on the Arnold stage?
I worked hard to bring my physique to a higher level. I will be leaner and will bring a fuller look.

What is your goal for the show?
People have to know one thing about me and it’s that I’ve always been competitive only against myself and kick my own butt to get better each time I step on stage… But my personal goal this time would be to qualify for the Olympia.

Did you do your own choreography for your routine?
With 12 years of dance background I’m not too bad at creating my own routines and the one I will present at the Arnold, I also choreographed it myself. Over the years I have received some outside help for some parts of my routines and I worked with different choreographers. For example, to build the Flamenco routine I had last year I was helped by a professional
Flamenco dancer.

Any hints as to what your routine will include?
I’m bringing an entertaining and high energy routine. I will do mixture of everything I do best. Of course dance and few gymnastic moves. I love my routine and I can’t wait to show on stage. I hope people will enjoy watching as much as I will have fun doing it.

You mentioned working on suits – will you be wearing a suit you designed?
For sure!

What’s the biggest challenge for a competitor outside the United States?
There are a few challenges but I would say that it’s difficult to keep up with the diet while traveling as we can’t bring all the food we need on the plane. Not everything is allowed across the borders.

Any one you’d like to thank?

There are so many people I would like to thank. First, all my friend and family for their great and constant support. My fiancé Jean-Francois, Christian Maurice and Mike Davis.

Thanks Sylvia and good luck next week!

Reebok’s Viral Marketing with Chuck Liddell & Girlfriend Heidi Northcott

This is a perfect example of how to generate buzz in a big way. The video shows UFC superstar Chuck Liddell working out nude with his girlfriend, Heidi Northcott. The two were spotted in nothing but Reebok shoes.

The MMA community was having a field day with this video when it surfaced and eventually ended up on TMZ. The piece cost Reebok next to nothing to make and it’s generating more buzz than most tv commercials would ever do. It gained so much attention that Jimmy Kimmel Live featured it last night.

Props to Reebok for the creative stunt.

Hardbody Poll: Who Will Win the Figure International?

We’re one week away from the 2010 Figure International in Columbus, Ohio.

arnoldbanner
There are a few seasoned veterans as well as a few rookies. The 2009 Ms. Figure Olympia, Nicole Wilkins-Lee will look to add the Figure International title to her resume. Can she be the first woman to do it in the history of Pro Figure? Andrea Watson will be making her pro debut and has yet to lose a show. Erin Stern had a breakout year in 2009 and will look to continue the hot streak. Mindi Smith has yet to lose a contest in the NPC and now the IFBB. She’s 1 for 1 in IFBB shows, will she continue it in Columbus?

Trish Warren Arnold Interview

David Robson caught up with IFBB Fitness Pro Trish Warren as she heads into the Fitness International. There’s nothing really new or earth-shattering revealed in the interview but it’s worth checking out if you’re not familiar with Trish and her background.

trishwarren

DR: How did you take your placement at last year’s Olympia? Did it give you greater motivation for the 2010 season?
TW: I was disappointed but not discouraged. Sometimes you have to take a step back to go two steps ahead. I am more motivated than I have ever been! I have worked very hard since the Olympia to tone down my muscularity and bring the best physique to Columbus.

DR: What aspects of you routine and physique will capture the judge’s attention and give you an edge come March in Columbus?
TW: I think it will be both my routine and physique! I have listened to the judge’s critiques after the Olympia and worked diligently to fix them! I guess it’s up to them to decide if I did my homework!

Kick’n It with Khadr – Baked Egg Whites

Ariel Khadr provides her newest kick’n tip. I haven’t tried this yet but if anyone has or does, let us know what ya think.

arielkhadr

Ever get super bored of your morning scrambled egg whites or hard-boiled eggs?

Well try this…
• Put your desired amount of egg whites in a blender and blend throughl
• Spray a bake dish with pam spray
• Pre-heat the oven to 375 degrees
• Pour your egg whites in to the dish
• Cook for 10-15 mins.

With a sprinkle of splenda and a spritz of spray butter, you’ll have a mini “cake” or “muffin” fix. You can even put spinach and/or fat-free cheese in the blender to make something similar to a quiesce. Simple recipes like these can make you feel as if you aren’t even dieting!

Another mini-cake I made while dieting through my birthday…
2 whole eggs, 2 whites
3 packets stevia
2 packets splenda
1 tbsp walden farms maple syrup
1 tbsp walden farms chocolate syrup
1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tbsp vanilla extract
about 1 tbsp cinnamon
about 1 tbsp apple pie spice
about 1 tbsp ground coffee beans
a pinch of salt

He believes that American people have the power to halt the obesity epidemic.” It looks like an interesting show and one to check out on March 26th. Here’s a few sample clips.

Pregnancy With Dre – The Little Voice

Andrea Taylor checks in with her latest Fit Pregnancy Journal. She’s expecting her first child and is sharing some of the challenges of staying fit while being pregnant here on Hardbody.com.

dretaylor

When we train, we constantly compete with ourselves. That crazy voice in our heads does not let us slow down when we’re tempted to, plus we know that dreaded feeling when we realize that we could’ve worked harder. It’s tough to change your mindset from “the competitor” to “the mommy” when you’re pregnant!

For the first 5 months, I trained as usual- and felt great! I was starting to think this pregnancy thing was easy. . .until one night when Micah (hubby) and I went out for our normal run. About 1 mile into the run, my legs felt like they weighed 100 pounds each! And breathing? Forget it! I felt so lame and out of shape! I didn’t give in at first- no thank you! I spend hours every day yelling at my clients not to stop what they’re doing, push through the pain, focus on your breathing . . . I quickly learned this probably shouldn’t apply to me at 5 months pregnant. I simply could not run anymore. I threw my hands up, took a deep breath and said “I can’t go anymore. I give up.” Yup, the loser words. I said ‘em.

Micah stopped, held onto both of my shoulders, stared directly into my eyes and said “Honey, YOU’RE PREGNANT.” Thanks coach- I needed that! He laughed at my frustration and we enjoyed a nice stroll until I felt good again. After that it was all run/walk intervals (C’mon! Us Hardbodies don’t go down without a fight!).

When we shared my story of wretched defeat with the doctor she also had a laugh! She said there’s not a point in a pregnancy that a doctor can tell an active person that this is the time for them to stop. Instead, we have to listen to our bodies. Oh. . .ok. . listen to our bodies. So, when we feel like we can’t go on, then don’t? Little does she know about the voice I have to compete with!

Bottom line for us pregos: don’t be stubborn and make your body scream at you before you start to listen to it. Forget the voice- tell it to go play on the freeway until the little miracle is here- then it can come back with a vengeance!

Win with Class. Lose with Class.

The competitive season is just getting started and already I’ve seen a number of sore losers. It’ll be a long year for those who can’t cope with defeat. No one is perfect and we all (at least we should) strive to be our best. Your best may or may not be enough to win on any given day. No matter what the final placings are at the end of the night, it’s important to still show class. How you define class is up to you but don’t throw it out the window over a placing. It’s easy to be the happy, cheery person when you’re winning and everyone is telling you how great you are but the true test of character comes in how you handle defeat.

When you don’t place as well as you had hoped will you carry yourself with the same manner as when you won? It’s understandable to be disappointed and upset but it’s not a free pass to act unprofessional.

Win or Lose… Stay Classy.

Fit Mom Doesn’t Mess Around

Heidi Michelle McFrederick is a mother of four adorable girls but she hasn’t let that slow her down. The energetic mom is heading to the Arnold Amateur bikini event next weekend in Columbus, Ohio. “I don’t mess around,” said McFrederick, 32, a contestant in the amateur bikini competition at the Arnold Schwarzenegger Sports Festival, set for March 4 to 7 in Columbus. “I love exercising, I love working out and I love working in the yard — anything that’s sweaty and dirty.

“I want to be a good influence on my kids. I try to instill in them the importance of a healthy and fit lifestyle.”

The Arnold Amateur bikini event takes place next Thursday. For tickets and more information visit http://arnoldsportsfestival.com.
