Hardbody Poll: What’s Your Favorite Female Body Part?

When you look at a magazine or see others on stage, you often think… I wish I had her _______ or wow I love her _______ .

{democracy:161}

Sex Sells… Sleaze Shouldn’t

Earlier in the year I posted an ad from Nutrex where they featured pro figure competitor, Larissa Reiss spread eagle with a poorly photo-shopped supplement bottle next to her. The headline read, “Meet your new sex partner”. Classy stuff (note the sarcasm). They’re back with another sleazy ad and this time it features not only Larissa Reiss but also pro bikini competitor Nathalia Melo. The headline reads, “BETTER SEX! No strings attached”.
nutrex-tacky

As you can see the image shows Nathalia on all fours with Larissa pulling her g-string off. I don’t find the image flattering and it’s far from sexy. It’s pretty apparent that this company doesn’t view these women as athletes. If they did they wouldn’t put them in their ads this way. Sure, they have the right to do whatever they want but why showcase two of the top pro competitors in this manner?  I get that the supplement is a sex enhancing pill but there are plenty of ways to convey sexy without making it sleazy.

What do you think? Post your thoughts in the comments below.

Sonia Gonzales Rock’n The Hardbody on New Muscle & Fitness Hers Cover

IFBB Bikini Pro, Sonia Gonzales is looking pretty in pink on the newest Muscle & Fitness Hers cover. The September/October 2010 issue hit newsstands this week and this is one you’ll want to purchase. I flipped through the magazine at the grocery store last night and it’s loaded with great information. I really like the direction the magazine has gone this year. Check it out and I’m certain you’ll agree that it’s become the best magazine for women who are serious about fitness.

The Burn Bag

This is a creative way to show a product’s benefit. Every one who purchases GNC’s BURN 60 fat burning supplement receives a complimentary bag. Is it the best thing ever? No but it conveys the point that BURN 60 will slim your waist.

Live Coverage from the NPC JR USA

Follow all the action from the 2010 NPC Jr USA. The competitors are checking in today and the prejudging will kick off tomorrow morning. The numbers for the female bodybuilders and the fitness competitors are disappointing. There’s a pro card up for grabs in the Fitness division and only 11 8 women TOTAL are slated to compete. Only 11 female bodybuilders total are schedule to compete. The bikini and figure will dominate the show and I look for a couple very competitive new pros to leave Houston.

G’s Tip of the Week – What the Bloat?

IFBB Figure Pro Gina Aliotti tackles the bloat.

gtip

Trying to figure out the reason for your constant bloat… What is going on?? With all the fibrous foods and high protein intakes, this is a common issue. You’ve tried everything from taking digestive enzymes, minimizing protein shakes, upping your water, changing your sources of nutrients, etc.  but nothing is working….!? Why don’t you slow down and chew?! Always being on the go can cause you to eat your foods too fast. Remember to enjoy your meals and slow down so your body can properly breakdown your food. Remember, food digestion all begins with in your mouth with the enzyme Amalyse. For better absorption and to reduce constant bloating, slow down and chew.

Hardbody Style’n with The Sports Stylist® – Keep Your Sizes Real

The Sports Stylist® is back with another great tip.

sportsstylist

When giving your sizes to the stylist on your upcoming photo shoot, be totally honest about what sizes you wear top and bottom. Better to have things that fit than them being too small or too large. If you reference a brand and your size (i.e. in Nike I am a small but in Adidas I am a extra small) a good stylist can take that info and “translate” it to any brand he or she pulls for you. Remember you won’t wear the same size in every brand!

The Diet Detective: Butter Me Up

The Diet Doctor has a great tip about butter and ordering from a restaurant. Check it out.

Butter Me Up
Even if something isn’t doused in oil, you still may not be calorie-safe–it can have added butter or cream. Toasted buns are often covered in butter; even steaks have butter drizzled on them before they’re sent out. “And restaurants always finish sauces with butter or cream–even if the words butter or cream aren’t in the sauce’s name. For example, a white wine sauce is always finished with butter,” says Cooking Light’s Strynkowski.

Healthy tip: Be suspicious, be inquisitive, and make sure to get a straight answer from the server (who should ask the chef). Always invoke the “allergic reaction” or “medical condition” excuses to be on the safe side.

David Barton: “Vodka seems like the right complement to the gym”

David Barton is known to mix things up a bit when it comes to his gym, appropriately named David Barton Gym. If you’re not familiar with some of the marketing, check out these ads from the last couple years. The gym is in the news again but this time for their partnership with a Vodka company. The gym is now serving cocktails after their classes. Barton told The New York Times, “I want people to find the gym not just a place to work out, but a good hang as well.”

Seems a bit hypocritical, right? I mean you’re going to the gym to be healthier (most people’s agenda any way) so serving up alcohol defeats the point. Barton addresses that with, “It’s better to work out and drink than to not work out and drink,” he said. “Our members have intense lives, and some people party and that’s all the more need to work out. I’m not pushing alcohol, but I’m not a prohibitionist.”

The Diet Doctor: Restaurant Oil Slick

Here’s a great tip and insight on ordering at a restaurant in regards to oil.

Oil Slick
There’s oil on almost every restaurant dish, and while some oils (e.g., canola, olive) are healthier than others, they all have approximately 120 calories per tablespoon. So you may go to the trouble of ordering an egg-white omelet, believing you’re making a “healthy” choice, but it could be doused in oil.

Or you might order grilled or steamed vegetables, but they may have been marinating in oil for hours, if not all day. It’s difficult to get grilled or steamed veggies without oil, because they must be made to order–and that takes a lot of time in a busy kitchen. And certain vegetables are worse than others. “Eggplant, for example, absorbs a lot of oil–just poke it around in your dish, and see what comes out,” says Greely.

There’s oil in other “healthy” foods as well. Because fat and oil help preserve cooked food, busy restaurants usually partially cook poultry/fish and then coat it in butter/oil until it’s ready to be finished, says Billy Strynkowski, executive chef of Cooking Light magazine. “Even if you order your chicken ‘dry’ with the sauce on the side, poultry is always pan-fried in oil or clarified butter.”

Pasta, potatoes and rice, again, are often partially cooked and filmed with some type of fat so they stay fresh and don’t clump together, adds Juventino Avila, chef and instructor at the Institute of Culinary Education in New York City. Oh, and if you think that having simple rice and beans at your favorite Mexican restaurant is healthy, think again–the rice is fried, then steamed.

Healthy tip: Be aware of where you’re eating. Restaurants typically want to please their patrons; however, most of the time, unless the restaurant promotes itself as healthy, it just doesn’t have the equipment, materials, time or utensils to do it right, offers Avila.

Almost all the chefs agree: If you want it cooked a certain way, make sure to tell your server that you have an allergy (to butter, or whatever it is you want eliminated). This usually encourages the chef to make up a new batch of veggies, chicken, etc., without those added calories. Avila recommends calling the restaurant in advance and making sure it can provide the food exactly the way you want it prepared.

Pearl Jam – Black

Wanna Lose Weight? Drink Water BEFORE your meals

A new study shows that drinking water before a meal can help you shed pounds and keep it off.

Forget diet pills and cleanses. A new study suggests that an effective weight-loss aid is available straight from your kitchen sink.

Drinking two 8-ounce glasses of water before breakfast, lunch, and dinner while also cutting back on portions may help you lose weight and keep it off for at least a year, according to research presented today at the annual meeting of the American Chemical Society, in Boston.

“As part of a prudent, low-calorie weight-loss diet, adding water may help with weight-loss success,” says Brenda Davy, Ph.D., the lead author of the study and an associate professor of nutrition at Virginia Tech, in Blacksburg.

Dietitians have long recommended drinking water as a way to shed pounds, but little research has been done to confirm this conventional wisdom, the researchers say. Though small, Davy’s study is the first randomized controlled trial to examine the benefits of “preloading” with water before meals.

Egg Contamination Source Still Unclear

The egg recall has grown over the last few days and it is spreading to more states. Commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg addresses consumer safety concerns on ABC’s Good Morning America. Are eggs still safe? Yes, just make sure you cook your eggs thoroughly.

The Diet Detective: You’ve Been Grilled

Not all grills are created equal. Say WHAT? Yup, just because you order something grilled at a restaurant doesn’t mean it’s healthy. Check out this great tip about grilling and ordering grilled food.

You’ve Been Grilled
That’s right, even the grill isn’t sacred. I don’t know how many times I’ve recommended that people order their food grilled. But according to food-safety expert Jeff Nelken, “Often times breakfast cooks save the bacon fat and use it on the grill to make lunch and dinner foods.” Also, the grill itself may not be what you think it is.

When we order foods grilled, most of us assume they’ll be cooked on an open flame, but many times it’s a flat-top grill, where some type of grease or oil is necessary to create an even cooking surface, increase the cooking speed and prevent the food from sticking.

Many restaurants will call a food “flame grilled” on the menu, but even so, the food or the grill may have been brushed with oil to prevent sticking. Even “grilled” fish/seafood is always brushed with some type of oil, says John Greely, chef at the famed 21 Club in New York City.

Healthy tip: Ask if they’re using a flat-top grill or a flame grill. If it’s flat-top, request your food grilled in a pan with cooking spray instead of oil. Nelken suggests telling the server you “just returned from the hospital and need the food prepared according to doctor’s instruction.”

Another option is frequenting restaurants where you can see the food being cooked in an open kitchen, says, Kimberly Johnson, R.D., a chef and instructor in the Nutrition and Hospitality Management Department at Syracuse University in Syracuse, NY.

Erin Stern’s Road to The Figure Olympia

Top IFBB Figure Pro Erin Stern is back and she’s giving you an exclusive look at her return to the Olympia stage. Erin is making a run at the Figure crown and has positioned herself as one of the favorites heading into the big dance.

sternroad

Contest prep is never the same from show to show. The body changes, we add more muscle, get a little older, have more/less stress, or change gyms! I started my “diet” last week… this will be my first prep in my new hometown of Tampa, Florida. Everything is great except for the EZ-Bake oven in my apartment, which makes cooking in bulk a near impossible feat. The first time I placed a pan of chicken in the oven, the oven door wouldn’t shut. Then, with a pan that fit, it took an hour to cook. So, I’m learning to love boiled chicken! I’m eating six clean meals a day and increasing the volume and intensity of my workouts. I’m lifting six days a week – with legs twice in the rotation – a heavy day with powerlifting and a functional day with more traditional bodybuilding exercises. I’ve been meeting people  for “track practice” twice a week, with a high intensity day and a sprint endurance day. It has been great because I still get the jitters (or a nervous tummy-ache) when I know the practice will be a hard one… just like I used to feel in college!!!

Physical training is going really well, I’m taking progress pictures every week and comparing shots side by side on my computer. It’s great to see the subtle changes in the pictures! For the mental preparation, I revisit “Egylo,” my alter-ego stage persona from the last few shows. Egylo isn’t me, and I’m terrible at pretending/acting… my true emotions show on my face every time (see “terror” on my face at Arnold Classic ’09, “joy” at Arnold ‘10). I really enjoy going up on stage, I just get nervous!

My goal for this show is to just be me… I can walk in heels, pose, and smile like I’m having fun…because I will be! I don’t need to hide behind a persona or squeeze into a character who just doesn’t fit me! I’m also learning that being “polished” for the stage doesn’t require a bump-it and teezed-up beehive hairdo… goodbye Aqua Net!

More to come on my Road to the O.

Kathleen’s Jacksonville Wrap-Up

IFBB Figure Pro Kathleen Tesori shares her thoughts on her Jacksonville Pro experience.

katscountdown

Improvements and Judging
I made my own prediction on how I would do after pre-judging.  After getting feedback, checking out the physiques backstage and thinking about my own performance I placed myself about 10th and ended up taking 13th. So as for me the judges were spot on and I was just fine with my placing. I improved two placings from the Phoenix show and this show had a much deeper line up.

I have a fair share of improvements to make… My legs and glutes needed to come in a bit tighter, my suit bottoms were big (every detail counts when competition is tight) and my posing was awkward and stiff.

I made major improvements from the Phoenix Pro and felt like I created an “awe” factor in the crowd so I completed two of my goals while at the show. I met many new competitors and got to hang with my friends which is MY favorite part about competing. Meeting the competitors and making a personal connections makes following the sport that much better!

For me following the sport of bikini and figure is like having a fantasy football team or something! I cannot wait to see what happens at the Olympia this year.

Cheat Meal
The night after the show I went to the Cheesecake Factory. For some this is normal but for me this was my first time. I had a few bites of two different flavors of cheesecakes (Red Velvet & Adams Peanut Butter) and they were both delicious. I have always hated cheesecake but both flavors were yummy. I returned home on Sunday, after a 12 hour travel day, I went out for some clean sushi but included a bottle of Saki!!!  I also ate a whole can of my favorite corn!

That is all she wrote for me – I see the weeks after competing as a “clean slate “ a “fresh start”. It is like completing a cleanse and I do not want to see all my hard work go down the drain in a few days.

Transition
Slow and steady… I am doing almost the same amount of cardio this week as I was doing just before the show. Each week I will keep adjusting the cardio sessions down until I get to my normal routine.  This helps my body adjust and allows me to keep the competition look.

This week I am doing two hard workout days and two days of fun classes. Each week I will add a workout back in until I get to my normal routine.  I like to get right back into the gym after a show.  I may not jump back into training right away but like to keep some type of routine going.  I am drinking tons of water and electrolytes to help my body recover from my water depletion.  I am staying pretty clean this week and each week will slowly add new items to my diet.

Post Competition Skin
I finally found a way to get the tanner off using www.bodybuilding.com. Baby oil, a bath and bath gloves are the magical ingredients!  The tanner does not come completely off but it gets to a color that is much better than not using the above ingredients. Wish I would have known about the baby oil trick sooner.

Hope you have enjoyed my journals.

Make it a great day!
