Nutrition Fact Labels on Meat in Near Future

Ever wonder what is in your meat and what the nutrition breakdown is? Beginning in 2012 you won’t have to guess. The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that cuts of meat will now get nutrition labels.

The new labels will list calories, calories from fat, total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, protein and vitamins for 40 of the most commonly purchased cuts of beef, poultry, pork and lamb, according to an early look at the labels provided to USA TODAY. The new rules will be published today in the Federal Register.

Federal officials say they hope the labels will make Americans as conscious about health choices in the meats they buy as they have become in scouring labels on other packaged food products.

“This will be very helpful to people who are bewildered by what’s in meat,” says Marion Nestle, a professor of nutrition at New York University. “But people will be quite shocked at the calories and fat.”

Heather Mae French & Kristal Richardson to Sit Out 2011 Season

When the Arnold Invitations were announced two of the top IFBB Figure Pros were absent. Many people asked why Heather Mae French & Kristal Richardson were not on the list, considering they are two of the top competitors in the IFBB Figure division. Their management, Fitness Management Group (FMG), issued the following press release to help clear the air.

FMG PRESS RELEASE
December 24, 2010
– With the release of the invitations to compete in 2011 Arnold Classic, particularly the 2011 IFBB Figure International, there were two notable names absent from the invitation list – Heather Mae French & Kristal Richardson. To answer the flood of questions we’ve received, both Heather Mae French & Kristal Richardson have decided to sit out the competitive year of 2011 & are both eyeing a return to the competitive stage in 2012. Both of them wanted to emphasize they were not retiring & that they will still be involved with the sport in 2011, just not on stage. Considering both of them were coming of two consecutive years of placing third & fourth respectively at the IFBB Figure Olympia, it should provide a unique opportunity for a changing of the guard in the 2011 IFBB Figure International.

Kristal Richardson was quoted as saying, “I will be taking some time away from the stage next year to focus on my supplement company, Top Secret Nutrition, and the launch of the new product line. Be assured that this is not a retirement…just a short sabbatical to focus on my career. I still plan to be involved in the industry and will most definitely hit the stage again in the future.”

Here is what Heather Mae French had to say about her decision, “It is with very careful thought that I, Heather Mae French will be taking a leave of absence beginning with the 2011 season. I have endured many thoughts considering all factors involved with this decision and in my heart I know at this time it is what I feel will be very suitable for my life.

Recently I have been married and I am feeling a pull towards the direction of having another child. So I am graciously taking for a leave of absence with the goal of returning. I have and will always be in incredibly thankful on every level imaginable with regard to what I was able to achieve and experience within my sport. I have many, many fond memories since I turned pro in 2006! I am so happy and so great full for every time I was able to grace the stage of the IFBB. My memories are worth more than any lottery ticket could have ever provided. The past 4 years I have stepped on over 20 stages and astonishingly won 5 shows and maintained a title in Figure for 3rd in the World over two consecutive years! That’s amazing to me and more than I could have ever asked for!

With the help of FMG, I was given even further opportunities that I never thought were possible. Having a dream of becoming a world class athlete, consideration into mainstream publications, introduced to a fantastic sponsor and all of this offered on an extremely professional level. I feel that from every angle of my career I was treated like family.

In the near future, even while off stage I would love to still be a part of the IFBB, whether it’s through helping other women with positive direction within our sport, writing articles, speaking, judging, clinic helping etc., I feel I can offer so much and I love to help others . So with this letter I am looking for the support in my decision and hope it allows opportunity for a return on my behalf.

With Kind Regards & Complete Thankfulness”

Contact FMG at: fitnessdivasproductions@verizon.net or via Facebook.

All the best to both Kristal and Heather in their off stage endeavors.

“The Nice Jewish Girl Who Got Really Buff”

IFBB Figure Pro & reigning Ms. Figure Olympia, Erin Stern was recently featured on jewishjournal.com. The headline cracked me up when I read it, “The nice Jewish girl who got really buff”. Good thing she wasn’t the mean Jewish girl who got buff or she might hulk-smash some one. The article talks about Erin’s track background and how she transitioned into on of the top figure competitors in the IFBB. She also offers some advice to others looking to get into shape.

“The No. 1 rule is don’t make excuses. People always make excuses for why it’s too hard to work out or take time to be healthier.  I suggest making appointments for fitness, just like you would for a business meeting or a lunch with a friend. Make an appointment to walk or lift some weights. That way, there’s no excuse not to have the time.”

Check out the article here.

2011 Arnold Invitation Deadline Nears

The 2011 Arnold is coming up quick and the deadline for IFBB Pros to enter is even sooner. This Friday is the final day for female bodybuilding, fitness figure and new this year, bikini pros to submit for an invite. This is the only show on the IFBB Pro League schedule that is an invite only event. The pro events are all part of the Arnold Sports Festival set to take place March 3-6, in Columbus, Ohio.

The figure division typically sees nearly 100 women submit for an invite each year. The bikini division will likely be no different. The NPC National winner in figure and fitness typically receive an invite to this show. If that holds true we’ll see Monica Specking in figure and Stacy Wright in Fitness. There’s no guarantee anyone will receive an invite though. A selection committee votes on who they feel should be in the show and then lists are compiled from there. Typically around 15 women are invited in each division but it has been up or down from there in the past. It’s up to promoter Jim Lormier on the final list and the numbers invited. Those who placed in the top 6 of the Olympia have the best shot at getting in. Also those who competed and placed well in the final shows of the year have a good chance at getting and invite. I could see Courtney West getting invited based on her NPC USA win followed by her Houston Pro Figure win. Noemi Ola has been offered an invite in the Bikini division based on her win in the amateur portion of the show last year. She’s also the 2010 Detroit Bikini Pro champ.

There’s a saying, you’re only as good as your last show. If you’ve tied for 16th the last two shows you’ll have a more difficult time proving why you should receive an invite over someone who has been victorious. This is an international event, so look for a few names from across the globe and beyond the United States. Invites typically are announced before Christmas so we could see a list within the next 10 days.

Who do you hope to see on the invited list(s)?

MMA with MOMO – UFC 124 Predictions

Resident MMA guru, Momo is back with her predictions for UFC 124. Check out who she thinks will be victorious. It’ll be a great night of fights.

Hello fellow hardbodies! It’s that time again. Just in case you have been under a rock and have not heard, the UFC (the biggest cage fighting tournament in the world) and WEC have recently joined forces. It will be interesting to see how UFC plans to showcase all of these fights…We just had season 12 of the Ultimate FIghter on Spike… Team GSP vs. Team Koschek. This season was pretty entertaining with all the pranks, fights and trash talking. The  finale was last week on live tv and Jonathan Brooks took the spot of The Ultimate Fighter winner. Now the coaches square off tonight in Montreal Canada, home of GSP.

UFC 124 Predictions
STRUVE vs. MCCORKLE: I’m going with stefan “skyscraper” struve. He s like 6 ft 7 ? crazy tall and hasn’t really impressed me with his mma skills but somehow manages to win! He reminds me of a childhood book I used to read called The BFG—meaning The Big Friendly Giant

MILLLER vs OLIVEIR: I’m going with Oliveira in this fight. He is very young, under 20 i think. He has great motivation and just the other day he was unable to buy his girlfriend a cheeseburger with lettuce and tomato! Now he can afford a few. Very technical.

STEVENSON vs DANZIG: I’m goin with Danzig, a former Ultimate fighter champ. He is very weird guy who likes birds and is sponsored by vega – a vegan supplement company. Stevenson very strong guy, but past his prime, nobody likes him and has some good guillotines.

ALVES vs HOWARD: I’ll pick Alves on this fight. He has alota heart. We have 2 great stand up fighters, Howard is very strong with alota knockout power. Alves recently was out of comission for a bit and in the hospital when a cat scan revealed an irregularity involving an artery in his brain. He thought he would never fight again! He has a new outlook on life and maybe another win under his belt.

GSP VS KOSCHEK: Well most of the world, like me will be goin with GSP this fight. Koschek is a cocky, arrogant but has alota skills. You either love him or hate him. On the other hand you have a soft spoken, humble guy and some say the best welterweight athelete of the UFC. GSP already beat koschek before, the only difference it was a few yrs ago and some people say GSP is past his primetime. Koschek is very hungry. It will be a very interesting fight but I believe Gsp  is motivated to beat him after so many pranks and trash talking on TUF ( the ultimate fighter show)

Happy Holidays

2010 NPC Excalibur Photos & Results

The final NPC show of 2010 came to a close last weekend and Ron Avidan was there to captured it. The show ended up being the biggest event of the year in California with 292 competitors. I think Ron is still trying to recover from the event but he tells me it was “most excellent”. Congrats to all the competitors who achieved their goals.

Get the full results and photos from the show here. Any hardbody peeps compete in the show? Let us know how you did in the comments field below.

The Sports Stylist® Style’n Tip: How to Turn Down the High Beams

Hardbody Style’n Guru, Cindy Whitehead aka the Sports Stylists® has a helpful tip for concealing your nippls on a shoot. Wha… Wha… What? You say? Read on…

Covering Up:
(Nipple concealers) If you are worried about your “high beams” being visible during a shoot you can always buy “petals”, “top hats”, “nip-its”, “low beans” or even “silicone nipples” to cover anything you may see through the sports bra fabric (cold studios & nightclubs keep those products selling like mad). Keep some in your bag so you have them if needed. But remember, on a magazine shoot they may ask you not to use them as sometimes its easier for them to photo shop the natural nipple out later than it is the edges of these products. Most of these items are available at your local Victoria’s Secret, Nordstrom and other major department stores.

Check out Cindy’s blog on cindywhitehead.blogspot.com. She’s been doing some kick ass style’n lately. This week she’s in Texas working with Gatorade. How cool is that? Ya, those are the types of clients The Cinster rolls with. Follow her on twitter.com (@sportstylist) to see what she’s up to next.

Gina Aliotti’s Italian Insights – Chapter Four

Gina’s back with another Top 10 Italian Insights. The IFBB Figure Pro visited Italy and compiled a few lists. Check out her fourth chapter of Gina’s Italian Insights.

G’s Top 10 Italian Insights Part 4

1. Meals last at least 2 hours long!
2. The only salad dressing is Oil and Vinegar and most likely salt! Other salad dressings are not offered.
3. Italians don’t wear deodorant!
4. Gelaterias are like Starbucks in the U.S.
5. If you want to turn on your air conditioning in your hotel you must call the front desk and ask them to turn it on for you!
6. It is way to easy to spend a disgusting amount of money in Italy since the dollar is weaker than the Euro.
7. Don’t order a Bloody Mary expecting the same type of Bloody Mary you get in the States! They are NOT the same and I don’t recommend them!
8. Walking in Italy is their only form of exercise!
9. Never pack any valuables in your checked luggage because you can’t trust anyone these days and will come home with items missing!!
10. Don’t touch fruit or veggies unless you are planning on purchasing them!

IFBB Bikini Pro Shay Monroe’s Got Talent & a New Website

I love finding out what competitors do and what talents they have beyond a pretty face and a rock’n hardbody. This is a perfect example…

I ran into IFBB Bikini Pro Shay Monroe at the Ft. Lauderdale Cup where she was working the Sweet Cheats Cupcake booth. By the way, those cupcakes are insanely awesome! Little did I know that little Miss Shay had a hidden talent that had little to do with working a booth.

Earlier today Shay released her new website, shaymonroe.com. It’s not the typical site of an IFBB Pro Bikini competitor. Upon arriving at the site you hear a pretty kick’n beat and then an impressive voice welcomes you. Turns out its Shay’s voice and she can sing! It’s not just some lame attempt at putting her voice to some computerized tracks. Check out her site to hear her music and check out the video below for a little taste of what Shay brings to the table on a shoot and with her voice. I’m a fan of track #3 “Set You Free” on her music page. Take a peek at the photo section while you’re at her site. There are some pretty impressive looks I hadn’t seen from her before.

Keep rock’n the Hardbody voice and physique Shay!

Props to Safiya for letting me know about the new site first.

Brigitte Doleshal Wins “I’m A Hardbody” Photo Contest

A few weeks ago we asked you to get creative and send in photos of yourselves with the words “I’m a Hardbody” integrated in them. The contest was in conjunction with the full page ad currently seen in Muscle & Fitness HERS magazine. We continue to receive positive comments and feedback on the ad, thanks! It’s much appreciated.

We received a number of responses and some great entries. Kathleen Tesori went so far as to wear the ad and things mentioned in it as her Halloween costume. Funny stuff! One woman went above and beyond what we expected with the integration and we’re proud to announce her as the winner. Brigitte Doleshal’s fire fighting photos put her over the top. We caught up with our winner to find out more about her. Find out what the 41-year-old hardbody from Kansas City had to say.

Currently live in: Kansas City, MO

Number of years training: 7

Occupation: I’m a CPA –I work as the Director of Internal Audit for a local hospital system.

Contest History:
I’ve been competing since 2003. Here are the highlights:
2010 NPC Nationals – 16th (truly 16th, I made 3rd call outs)
2010 NPC USA’s – not placed
2009 NPC Arkansas State – Figure Class C First and Overall, Master’s First and Overall
2009 NPC Natural Ohio Championships – 7th
2005 WNBF Pro level – 4th Place in the WNBF Natural Atlantic Coast pro show and 5th Place in the WNBF International Pro show
2004 – 1st and Overall INBF World’s in New York to earn my WNBF Pro Card
2004 – 1st and Overall NPC Natural Grand Prix, Rockford, IL
Several other top five placings before that

I don’t always win – but I keep improving and keep trying my best!

How did you hear about “I’m a hardbody” contest?
Through my trainer, Kim Seeley.

What makes you a hardbody?
The hardbody image to me goes well beyond having a hard, sculptured physique. It’s an attitude and an approach to life. I’m very driven and focused, and I’m happy with my body at 41. I keep working hard and improving and even when a show doesn’t go my way I don’t let it get to me and I keep coming back. I believe in doing what I say I will do, and I keep training harder and challenging myself until my goals are achieved.

What’s this “busty la rue” I heard about?
Oh my gosh – can’t believe you heard about that!! Busty la rue has become my “stage persona”. It’s how I get myself to have more sass and be more confident on stage. I was out with friends years ago, and one of the guys in the group (his nickname is “Wild Man” if that tells you anything) started calling me “Busty la rue!!” (It might’ve had something to do with the upper region of my physique. So now, when I go on stage, I’m Busty La Rue – sassy, sexy, a little naughty, etc. She only comes out on stage! So NOT me in real life.

What are your future plans for competition or fitness goals?
I plan to get re-qualified in 2011 and continue to compete in the NPC at the National Level. I would love to earn an IFBB pro card but I also want to become a spokesperson / fitness model. I’m 41 years old and would really love to serve as a role model for other women around my age to motivate them and convince them you really can look and be in the best shape of your life no matter how old you are.

Thanks for contributing to our contest and all the effort you put into it.

Check out all the entries including the winning ones from Brigitte on our FACEBOOK FAN PAGE.

Kaitlyn Wins WWE NXT Season 3

Congratulations to a kick ass woman and friend of hardbody.com, Celeste Bonin. Celeste was crowned the newest Diva in the WWE earlier this week and you played a role in it. When the votes were counted and the results were announced, it was Kaitlyn (her wrestling name) that came out on top.

She went from never wrestling in July to being part of the elite women in the WWE. It’s a testament to her drive, charisma and willingness to be herself. Anyone who watched the show learned that she’s a bit of a goof. Ok, she’s a huge goofball but that’s part of what makes her awesome. Combine a personality, with looks and a hard body… You’ve got a winner.

Celeste shared with me that she’s extremely excited and thanks everyone who voted for her.

What’s next for her? Now she’s on the main WWE roster but still training and in development. It will be exciting to watch her on the next level and all the opportunities that come with it. Keep your eye on this Texas cutie, she’s going places.

Watch the video from the season finale on nxt.wwe.com.

IFBB Figure Pro Alicia Harris Scores with Da Bears

Alicia Harris found her groove at the end of the 2010 competitive season and continues to keep the ball rolling off stage. Around Halloween, Alicia did a photo shoot where she rocked not only a hard body but also some Chicago Bears apparel. She’s a long time fan of the NFL team and combined her passion for football with the shoot. The photo session was to build her portfolio and Alicia made a wise move that aspiring models can learn from.

Alicia turned that photo shoot into something bigger than just nice photos. She sent her pics rock’n the Bears shirt to some people at the BEARS headquarters. Someone liked what they saw and passed it on to the people in charge of their Pro Store. They liked Alicia’s look as well and brought her in to shoot for some of their new women’s apparel.

A perfect example of how combining your passion and taking initiative can turn into something bigger. Alicia is now featured on the Chicago Bears Pro Shop.

As a fellow Bears fan, this is frick’n cool to see. Props to Alicia and let’s hope her winning smile can help the Bears on the field.

Figure Olympians to Face Off at the Figure International?

The invites for the Arnold will go out later this month and it could be one of the most interesting Figure Internationals of all-time. Jenn Gates left the competitive stage with some “unfinished business” and she’s got her sights set on returning to the stage at the 2011 Figure International.

Jenn Gates was heading into the 2009 Figure Olympia to defend her title and considered the odds on favorite. During the final weeks of prep, she couldn’t shake the last few pounds. Baffled as to what the deal was she visited the doctor and found out she was pregnant with her third child. Jenn gave birth to a healthy baby boy and watched Nicole Wilkins become the Figure Olympia Champ. Baby Jax is now 7 months old and momma is hungry to get back on stage.

Earlier this week Jenn broke the news that she is preparing for a comeback and has her sights set on the Figure International stage to do so. She told Muscle Girls Radio hosts’ Adela Garcia and Sonia Gonzales, “I need another challenge and I feel like I left with some unfinished business.” Fighting off a cold she shared, “I’ve got a little spark and a little fight left.”

One thing Jenn has shown throughout her life is that she’s a fighter. Faced with challenges throughout her life she’s overcome them and done so with flying colors. She’s at her best when she has a little attitude and something to prove.

Nicole Wilkins and Erin Stern have both earned the title Jenn once held. Only Nicole can stake claim to being the Figure International Champ and shaking hands with Arnold on stage though. Although anything can happen, it’s pretty much a lock that we will see Nicole and Erin on the Arnold stage. Will Jenn get an invite and face the two women who have since worn the crown she once held? The selection committee would be foolish to not invite Jenn to compete.

So who will come out on top or will someone else top all three of them? Jenn is the shortest of the three but has a rock’n hardbody. Can she hang against the taller girls? Of course, she’s done it before and could do it again. She packed a good deal of muscle on her little frame and it will be interesting to see what her current physique looks like. Nicole wasn’t at her best at this year’s Olympia but has the structure that puts her in contention. If she can come in a tad bit tighter than the Olympia she could repeat as the Figure International champ. Erin Stern has positioned herself as the leading lady in Figure. She took top honors in Orlando and then captured the industry’s biggest crown by winning the Olympia. Erin has come a long way since turning pro and many feel she’s the favorite to win.

If all three women are at their best a case could be made for each one to win the 2011 Figure International. It will definitely make for an interesting show, should all three get invited.

Meet IFBB Bikini Pro Abbie Burrows

Abbie Burrows went into her first National NPC show as an unknown. She proved that if you show up rocking a hardbody you can do well and don’t need to be “known” to place. Abbie not only placed, she left an IFBB Pro. I caught up with Colorado’s newest pro for an interview.

Born/Raised in: Cheyenne, WY

Currently Reside In: Denver, CO

Occupation: Administrative Director for a Marketing Company (My Biology degree has come in very handy, just kidding!)

Did you play any sports growing up? Competitive Fast Pitch Softball (Pitcher) for the Rebels/2 time State Champions and University of Wyoming Club team, 2 time National Tournament. Skied for 15 years, Snowboard for 10 years. Cross Country Ski, Mountain Bike.

How did you get into the competing in the NPC and now the IFBB? Last Fall was my first show (Colorado Natural), I ended up placing 2nd. So, I decided to actually train and diet and see how well I could do. I trained 8 weeks for the Colorado State that following summer and took Overall.

What advice do you have for other women who are thinking about competing but not sure? If you are a single mother like I am and work 40 hours a week, you need to be well organized and have great time management…You will also need to realize that achieving something like this will put stress on your relationships with friends and loved ones. Your true friends will stick by you through it all the way without doubt. That being said, last piece of advice is to surround yourself with people that believe in you and want you to do well.

You teamed up with IFBB Pro Taylor Waldrop for your prep – how did that come about? We played football together on Denver Dream (Lingerie Football League). She is the one who put me into contact with Jeff Taylor to compete in the Colorado Natural. She gave me the confidence and motivation to continue to train and compete. She wrote out a diet and worked out with me a few times for the Colorado State. For Nationals, we worked together 2-3 times a week. Without her push and belief in me, I wouldn’t be where I am today!

How important was it for you to have a trainer? For the local shows it wasn’t absolutely necessary, but on the National level, it was important for us to work together 2-3 times a week. You can really see the differences in my body from the Colorado State show to Nationals. We already have a game plan for changes we are going to make for my Pro Debut! Not only is she my trainer, she is one of my best friends, so it was nice to be able to lean on her for emotional support as well.

How many National NPC shows had you done? 3, but I only trained for 2.

HAHA.

You were kind of an “unknown” going into this show. Did anyone try to discourage you or say you wouldn’t be able to turn pro so quickly? I had a few doubters, some of which were closest to me, which was upsetting, but it gave me even more push and motivation to work as hard as I could and give it my all.

What’s your favorite booty building exercise? The most amazing butt equipment is at Armbrust Pro Gym here in CO, specifically one legged leg press…push with your heel!

Favorite contest prep-meal of the day? Oatmeal!!

What’s one tip you could share with women to help make food taste better? Mrs. Dash!!! I absolutely hate the taste fish…so not only do I have EVERY flavor, I would go through about 1 container every 2 days. They also have Mrs. Dash marinades!

Are you part of jug nation? :)No, I am a part of the 33.8 oz bottle of Smart Water club…perfect size for 2 crystal lite packs! I drink 4 a day.

What’s your goal as a pro? My goal is to definitely have fun but show up to win… I’m pretty competitive so not placing well in anything would be upsetting. I always give 100% in anything I do. My goal in any Pro show will always be top 3.

When might we see you make your pro debut? I was hoping to use some of my momentum from Nationals and compete before 2011, but sometime in early 2011. I would also like to find a sponsor before my Pro Debut as well!

Thanks Abbie and good luck!

This weekend Abbie will find out if she makes the cover of the Mile High Sports magazine. It’s between her and one other woman for the coveted Snow Angel cover. Check back this weekend for an update.

Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show Gets Hardbody

Last night 34 women rocked the runway at the 2010 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. These women were stunning however a few people felt they were “too skinny”. Those of you who are fans of muscle will likely share that sentiment. Personally, I thought it was AWESOME. I didn’t see any women who were disgustingly thin and a few women could hold their own in bikini. Yes, they would need to be a little tighter in the booty/thigh but hey they still looked good.

Competitors, especially Bikini competitors could learn from these models. Notice how they take the stage and walk with sexy, confidence. THAT is the type of confident presentation that the NPC/IFBB Bikini division is looking for, at least in my opinion. The production of this show was bad ass and if you didn’t catch it last night you can watch the entire show on CBS.com.
