espnW – Women + Sports Summit – Hardbody Coverage

I’m stoked to be at Dove Mountain, attending the espnW Women + Sports Summit. This event is intended to discuss, inspire and further female sports. The list of attendees here is off the charts and I’m honored to be here. It’s been a whirlwind travel schedule going Vegas – Denver – Newark – Mumbai – Newark – Denver – Tucson in the last two weeks. This definitely brings the travel tour full circle as the event is being held at the Ritz Carlton and everything is first class here.

Follow all the action from the event here on Hardbody.com. If you’re on twitter, you can see the live updates via twitter.com/hardbodynews. Join and follow the espnW coverage via twitter with the hashtag #espnWsummit, hashtags.org/espnWsummit.

New Olympia Qualifying Rules & The Hardbody Take

The IFBB Pro League issued the following Advisory Notice regarding qualify for the Olympia. This is a huge change in the competition and we will see a much, much smaller 2012 Olympia.

September 21, 2011

NEW OLYMPIA QUALIFYING RULES

After meetings held during the Olympia Weekend and following further discussions between IFBB Professional League and Mr. Olympia, LLC, beginning 2012, only the following competitors will qualify for the Olympia:

1. top four (4) in each division at the Olympia.
2. top three (3) in each division at the Arnold Classic/International;
3. top two (2) in each division at the New York Pro; and
4. 1st Place at all other competitions

The top four (4) in each division at the 2011 Olympia will qualify for the 2012 Olympia.

The remaining 2011 competitions are not affected.

The IFBB Professional League and Mr. Olympia, LLC may offer special invites.

Jim Manion
Chairman
IFBB Professional League

The Hardbody Take:

I have no issue with this as it applies to the men’s division. I think the male bodybuilders competing only one time a year hurts promoters and shows. I am not a big fan of this as it applies to the women. Why? Let’s say Erin Stern, Nicole Wilkins, Ava Cowan or Candice Keene decide to enter shows throughout the year. They are already qualified for the Olympia but if they win a show there will be no other qualifications awarded. That means we could see around 10 women total in the Olympia. It’s highly unlikely that they will enter the majority of shows in 2012 but there’s nothing stopping them. I think one person from every competition should qualify. That means if the first place competitor has qualified second should get the qualification. That would grant one competitor for each show to qualify for the Olympia. Awarding only the first place person and then opening the Olympia up to special invites is a little unsettling to me. It then opens up a can of worms of how they will be chosen, how many and who gets them. I totally understand and agree with the Olympia organizers wanting to cut down on the number of people qualifying for the show. Limiting the bikini, figure and fitness to just the winner makes me uneasy.

If the new rule were in place this year we’d see this line up for the Figure Olympia competition.
1. Erin Stern
2. Nicole Wilkins
3. Cheryl Brown
4. Candice Keene
5. Ava Cowan
6. Gennifer Strobo
7. Felicia Romero
8. Kristal Richardson
9. Courtney West
10. Heather Mae French

That would leave Alicia Harris who placed in the top six at the Olympia not even qualifying for the Olympia. Kristal Richardson and Heather Mae French did not compete in the 2011 Olympia. Teresa Anthony notched a win under her heels and would be in the mix. Courtney West finished tied for 16th, Felicia Romero was 15th, Cheryl Brown was 7th and Gennifer Strobo was 11th.

I haven’t done the breakdown on Bikini and Fitness but you get the idea. I think around 15 competitors for the Olympia is good as it’s intended to be the best of the best. We’ll see how this shakes out for the new year.

What’s your thoughts on the new Olympia qualifications?

2011 Olympia Day One Photos & Recap

The 2011 Olympia has begun. Stay updated on here and Bodybuilding.com for complete coverage. Day one is in the books and now the action gets into full swing. Check out the photos on Bodybuilding.com.

DAY ONE RECAP:
The athletes had their meeting where they are briefed on what the weekend has in store, the schedule and how things will be run. Ron Avidan and I were on hand to snap photos and some women were very friendly, most were cordial and only a couple wanted nothing to do with having their picture taken. Part of this weekend and being a professional is having your photo taken whether you like it or not. When asked for a photo, one bikini competitor said, “I don’t want my picture taken. I don’t want any pictures.” Guess what sweetie, you can either pose for a photo or I will take one any ways. So this particular competitor held up her folder in front of her face for her photo. Nice job. Two figure competitors wanted nothing to do with being captured by my lense and didn’t bother to look up or acknowledge it was there. That’s fine. Again I’ll snap your photo and you can play the game despite your disdain for me or not. The majority of the women were delightful, smiled and in good spirits.

I mention the examples of not wanting to be bothered because at this level you are expected to be a PROFESSIONAL. If you come to meetings without your hair and make up done, that’s fine I get it but you know by now people will be there taking your photo. At Meet The Olympians some competitors acted as if they’d rather be stabbed in the face with dull pencils. You’re carb depleted, tired, hungry and smell like tanning.  get it but at the end of the day it’s about building your brand and interacting with fans. If fans stop caring, guess what no one will want your picture and no one will sponsor you and then what? You’re left sitting at an empty table eating cold fish and no one will care.

Aight so that’s my rant for the day. My hope is more competitors get past how tired and hungry they are and enjoy the Olympia Experience. Thousands of women would kill to be in that position. Check out photos from Day One here on Bodybuilding.com!

WWE Diva Kaitlyn Talks Olympia & Thanks Chuck Norris

Our resident body-slamm’n bad ass, Kaitlyn checks in on the heels of the 2011 Olympia. We’re stoked that Gaspari has brought her on board to host their Live Olympia coverage and will be giving fans a chance to meet the rising WWE star. She checks in with her latest blogskie and breaks down what’s up.

Dear Vegas,

Hi. It’s been a while. I see you’ve been doing well. Sorry I haven’t called. I’ve… just been busy. I’ll be seeing you again very soon. I hope we can work it out. I really don’t think I want my mattress to end up on the roof and I certainly don’t want any more tattoos. Please take it easy on me.

With love,
Kaitlyn

Ps. If anyone ends up in the trunk… I’m blaming hardbody.

It’s that time of year again! The countdown to the 2011 Olympia weekend begins! I am so excited to be going to the Olympia this year. I can’t wait to breathe in the excitement of the Olympia expo, to be amongst the world’s most incredible athletes and to return to my roots!

I’ve always loved fitness and bodybuilding. I fell in love with it when I was just a kid. I attribute part of my love for fitness to Chuck Norris. He’s a true Hardbody. Plus, his Nordic Track infomercials really did a number on me! When I was fourteen, I remember asking mom for a weight bench and set of plates and dumbbells to put in my room as an early Christmas present. Apparently, this is not “normal” behavior for a young teenage girl, but I think I turned out just fine. I went from the NPC figure stage straight to the the WWE. Look at me now ma! I’m a professional wrestler! ( Makin’ Mom proud since 1986).

So, besides getting to represent the WWE at the fitness industry’s most prestigious event, What makes this Olympia extra special for me? I’ll be making my debut as the host of Gaspari TV! This is a first-time-ever, never-been-done, holy-moly-this-is-awesome moment!

I will be interviewing Gaspari‘s elite athletes, some of the most important people in the industry today, many enthusiastic fitness fanatics and Rich Gaspari himself. I am truly honored to have the opportunity to represent Gaspari Nutrition and the WWE in such a exciting and innovative way.

There are so many things running through my mind. What should I wear? Should I also be tanned and oiled? Do I break the ice with bathroom humor? Ahh, I’m so nervous. Without a doubt, the 2011 Olympia weekend with Gaspari Nutrition and friends will be filled with excitement, shenanigans and certainly many unexpected and memorable moments.

I’ll see you there!

Fans stop by the Gasapari Nutrition Booth at the Olympia and get this autograph card. Follow her on twitter.com/kaitylnWWE and give her a HARDBODY hello.

2011 Fitness Olympia Preview and Predictons

Adela Garcia heads into the Fitness Olympia with a target on her back. She’s positioned herself as the one to beat since sitting out the 2008 Olympia due to a knee injury. Trish Warren will be absent from the line-up as she’s expecting her first child. Mindi O’Brien shared via twitter that she will be sidelined due to a nagging injury. Can Tanji Johnson bring a look that leaps her over Adela?

The rules changed to put the emphasis on the routines and I hope we see the judges stick to that change. If they do, and I believe they will, then we should see a top six that has some new faces in it. There will be some incredible routines performed on Friday night. Look for the Canadian contingency (Myriam Capes and Jodi Boam) to stand out with their incredible gymnastics and strength moves. The x-factor in the top six will be Camala Rodriquez. She’s has the structure to place well in the physique rounds but has been inconsistent with what she brings to the stage. I have her in the middle of the pack when it comes to the routine rounds. If Oksana Grishina performs a routine like she has in the past and misses the top six, expect to hear it from the crowd. She was out of the top 6 at the Fitness International which was the biggest injustice since her pro debut where she was tied for 16th, at least in my opinion. She won’t have the best physique on stage but she will entertain with her performance.

If Fitness has any chance at surviving and thriving like it once did the placings need to reflect the routines and not the physiques. Those of you watching the webcast at home, keep score of what routines you like the best and see if they fall in line with the final placings. Read my entire preview of the competition and where I think the ladies will finish. Sound off if you agree or disagree in the comments below.

Hardbody 2011 Bikini Olympia Preview & Predictions

Last year the Olympia added the Bikini division and we saw Sonia Gonzales crowned the queen. The division, in just its second year, continues to evolve. We’ll  see a number of new faces and hardbodies on stage this year. Nicole Nagrani has been on a roll and appears to be the one to beat going into the show. Jaime Baird has found her groove and has a string of wins heading into this weekend. Dianna Dahlgren brings a fresh face and a booty that is popp’n. Nathalia Melo when on her game brings a look that is tough to beat. Can one of these ladies dethrone Sonia this weekend?

If Sonia shows up like she did at the 2011 Europa Supershow in Dallas, we will absolutely see a new champion. If I was a gambling man I’d put my money on Nicole Nagrani, Nathalia Melo, Jaime Baird or Dianna Dahlgren taking the title. Some people feel you can’t just kinda beat the champ you have to knock them out. I think there are a few women who have knock out capabilities. Check out my Bodybuilding.com Olympia breakdown of the entire field and where I think the ladies will finish.

Fight Night: Round Three in the Figure Olympia

Men’s Professional Bodybuilding had Ronnie Coleman versus Jay Cutler battling it out for the Olympia title. Fitness saw Jen Hendershott and Adela Garcia go head to head in their duel. The world of Figure has its own battle brewing and round three goes down this week. Nicole Wilkins and Erin Stern will face off for the third time on the Olympia stage and they each share a win.

Nicole won the prestigious title in 2009 and upset rising star Gina Aliotti in the process. Erin finished 6th that year, her first appearance on the Olympia stage. In 2008, Erin had yet to compete a pro stage and Nicole finished in 9th at this event. Last year, Erin found her stride and beat Nicole for the Olympia crown. The two will square off for the third time this weekend. Despite the first time not being much of a battle between the two, rest assure it will be this time. Erin wasn’t at her best when the two faced off earlier this year at the Figure International and Nicole left Columbus with another first place check. Nicole gave us a little preview last week at the Tournament of Champions last week and she’s on her game. She came in a bit tighter than we’ve seen her and has added some muscle to her legs and delts.

There’s no disrespect intended towards the rest of the line-up but it appears fight night will come down to Erin and Nicole battling it out for the Figure title. Check out the preview of the entire competition and where I think they may finish here. It’s a comprehensive Bodybuilding.com Olympia feature and use it to follow the Live Webcast!

Who did I pick for my top 6? Check it out on Bodybuilding.com.

IFBB Bikini Pro Nathalia Melo: Am I E.T.?

IFBB Bikini Pro Nathalia Melo last stepped on stage at the Orlando Pro where she left with the overall crown. She’s back and ready for her second Bikini Olympia. The Brazilian Bombshell checks in and as always she has some entertaining thoughts to share. Check out her latest top ten list, you’ll be sure to get a laugh or three.

Am I an E.T.????

I remember when I first decided to compete, and went to my first Team Bombshell Camp. All these SUPER fit girls eating out of zip lock bags, and carrying these quite over-sized water containers; which, later I came to find out were jugs (HELLO JUG NATION!!!). I thought to myself…‘’What the hell is going on around here???’’ Well… a couple years have passed, a few competitions under the belt… and now I am eating out of zip lock bags, and YES I am a proud member of Jug Nation. So, today there are a few things that make me wonder whether I am completely out of my mind, or just a bit, hmmmm… OFF when compared to the normal population.

Here is a list of 10 things which makes me wonder if I am from the same planet as all of my “normal” friends are:
1. Thinking that going to the gym twice a day is not only normal, but absolutely necessary at times.
2. Being proud of my sneaker collection and knowing every new model that comes out, and having no idea who in Earth Christian Louboutin is!
3. Drinking water out a jug (glasses are overrated!)
4. Finding a new flavor of Mrs. Dash can put a smile on my face.
5. Counting down every second to 3PM, because that means it is time to eat!
6. To feel insulted if someone asks to have “a bite” of my food. hmm… NO!
7. Thinking that fork and knife are not so necessary when I have my hands.
8. To have as one of my main concerns when traveling if the hotel room has a mini fridge or not.
9. Spending the same amount of money on this fancy imported fish as I spend on my car payment every month.
10. To think that plain romaine lettuce makes a great snack because it is crunchy and sweet.

So.. if you are a Hardbody and also think you are from “another planet”, go to my Facebook page to tell me what makes you an “E.T.” just like me! =)

See you in Vegas!

LOL! Ah you gotta love Nathalia.

The Fitness Industry Pauses To Reflect On 9/11

Ten years ago the world changed. Some of you may not be old enough to remember it but many of us will never forget where we were and what we were doing ten years ago. I know I’ll never forget it. Check out what some of the people in the fitness industry were doing on September 11, 2001 in a nice tribute by Bodybuilding.com.

I woke up a little after 6am and was peeling my eyes open before heading to the gym. I turned on the tv as I normally did to watch the TODAY show. I thought I was still asleep or dreaming when I saw the reporters talking about a plane crashing into the World Trade Center tower. I was doing cardio at the gym when the second plane hit and it was like the world stood still. The vibe in the gym was eery and driving home it seemed like everything stood still. I remember going into the design firm I worked at and getting a call from my boss. She was stuck in the airport and was supposed to fly to New York that day. The rest of the day I was glued to my tv and couldn’t fathom what I was seeing. The first time I visited Ground Zero was for the Team Universe competition and the Millennium Hilton had been rebuilt. My room overlooked the gaping hole in the ground that was once the location of the World Trade Center.

Read what others in the fitness industry were doing on that day.

What were you doing on that day?

Wilkins Wins 2011 IFBB Tournament of Champions

The 2011 IFBB Tournament of Champions went pretty much as most expected. Nicole Wilkins, one of the IFBB’s elite, walked away with another win and gave fans a little preview of next week’s Olympia look. Teresa Anthony showcased her tremendous shape and tiny waist in the runner-up position and Krissy Chin locked up third place.

The surprise of the show came in the fourth place position with Michele Mayberry. When I wrote the TOC preview, I had given her props and thought a top ten finish would be a win for her. I didn’t expect her to leap into the top five however she did and is headed to the Olympia. Since the top three were already qualified Michele becomes the last Figure Pro to be added to the Olympia list. Props to her for finding a winning formula after floundering for several shows in figure and fitness. Jennifer DeJoya was also a bit of surprise in the fifth place finish. I didn’t have her in my top five heading into the show but she proved that she was capable of a top five finish and did so here.

Nicole added some muscle to her frame since the Arnold and St. Louis Pro show. Most notably in her legs and delts. She used to be criticized as not having enough muscle to be in the top spots but I don’t think that will be something you hear from the nay-sayers now. I’d say it’s a sure fire bet that you’ll see her and Erin side by side next week posing it out for the Olympia title.

Others to note.. Olympia bound Natalie Waples was on the outside of the top five despite having one of her best showings to date. Jodie Minear was off and way off her best. She was in the mix for a top five spot earlier in the year and the package she brought this time to the stage left her out of the top 10. Whatever training she’s been doing isn’t work and should definitely look at changing it up.

2011 IFBB Tournament of Champions:
1. Nicole Wilkins*
2. Teresa Anthony*
3. Krissy Chin*
4. Michele Mayberry*
5.Jennifer DeJoya

*Qualifies for 2011 Figure Olympia

Abbie Burrows Wins IFBB Tijuana Bikini Pro Show

The Tijuana Pro was the last chance for the IFBB Pro Bikini women to qualify for the Olympia. When the dust settled in Mexico it was Abbie Burrows who left with her first pro victory. She takes some momentum into the big dance in Vegas next week. Abbie was most people’s pick to win heading into the show, as she had a proven track record that positioned her for her the title. She came, she posed and left with a nice four thousand dollar check. Not too shabby of a pay day, in fact it’s one of the highest first place checks you’ll find a bikini competitor collect.  The show wasn’t without a few surprises though.

Cristiana Alicia Mendivil from Mexico wasn’t on the official competitor list earlier in the week but she’s headed to the Olympia now. She danced her way into the runner-up position. I say dance because her posing was well slightly over the top to what we’re used to seeing on an IFBB pro stage. She has a nice physique however I’d like to see competitors get marked down for posing as if they are about to take an adult entertainment stage. Hands through the hair, booty shaken back and forth and looking more like a salsa dancer than a pro bikini competitor is not what, in my opinion, should be rewarded. I’m not a judge and there isn’t any specific “don’ts” in bikini so technically she did nothing wrong according to the rules of the event. Cristina wasn’t on the list earlier because she was an amateur until the night before. The amateur competition was held the night before and those who turn pro there were awarded IFBB pro status, thus qualifying them for a chance to compete in the IFBB show the following day. Not a bad weekend for Cristina second in the amateur class and then the next day second in her first pro show.

Kelly Gonzales finished in the third and final qualifying spot for the Olympia. Kelly is one of the smaller competitors but she has continued to improve. I had her stock on the rise coming into the show but wouldn’t have guessed she’d be top three. Congrats to her though she presented with poise and class. Fourth place went to Christie Marquez, who was at her all time best. She showed that persistence can pay off and her fourth place finish was her highest as a pro.

Tiffany Boydston finished in fifth place in just her second pro show. She should be stoked with a top five finish however she appeared in slightly flabbergasted at her name being called fifth. Understandably so given that throughout prejudging and the final comparison she was in the third place position in terms of call-outs. It does serve as a reminder to all competitors that despite being in the middle, second or third place position you never know where the judges will place you. Tiffany has room to improve and look for her to be in the top callouts in future shows. Patience will be her biggest obstacle going forward in the pro ranks.

Abbie Burrows brought one of her best looks to the stage and it paid off. She’s a taller competitor and she posed with more confidence than in the past. I’d still like to see her switch up her back posing and her suit bottom looked a bit small compared to other competitors but it could be because she’s got a bit more booty than the others. Still a deserved win and it should help with her confidence and stage presence heading into the Olympia.

Others to note. Dianna Fields was definitely improved from her last showing and it looks like she has a new addition to the family. I like Jenny Drennan’s look and tiny waist. She may have been a bit too lean compared to the other women but overall still a nice bikini body.

Congratulations to all the women competing in this show. Don’t forget that as pros you’re in a position that many others are striving to reach. Everyone wants to win, that’s the nature of competition but at the end of the day you’re not going to retire off from competition earnings. Enjoy your time on the stage and make it work for you. You don’t need to win to be successful and certainly don’t let a placing define your self worth. If you do you’ll find yourself empty and and constantly seeking something that will never be fulfilled.

2011 IFBB Tijuana Pro Bikini Results and Scores
1. Abbie Burrows – 5
2. Cristiana Alicia Mendivil – 12
3. Kelly Gonzales – 18
4. Christie Marquez – 23
5. Tiffany Boydston – 25
6. Christy Merritt – 28
7. Jenny Drennan – 38
8. Anca Marcus – 43
9. Adriana Guzman -45
10. Wilhelmina Davis – 45
11. Adriana Falcon – 53
12. Diana Fields – 58

Hardbody Style’n – Sporty Inspiration with The Sports Stylist®, Cindy Whitehead

Our kick ass style’n guru, Cindy Whitehead aka The Sports Stylist® has some a sweet contribution this week. Check out her new “sporty inspiration”  looks that will help you stay hardbody in and out of the gym.
I’ve always thought that the most stylish girl at the gym was the one whose look was street inspired/workout rather than a full on typical “gym look”. I am a huge fan of layering the shit out of your outfit and mixing what you already have in your “everyday” closet with your workout wear (and this goes both ways). I also firmly believe that adding an awesome pop of color makes that 6 mile run on the treadmill go a bit faster. At least in my twisted little mind it does.
Check out Cindy’s blog at cindywhitehead.blogspot.com for more kick ass style’n tips and ideas. She’s also one to follow on  twitter.com (@sportsStylist). How bad ass is she?

Figure Champ Nicole Wilkins Update & Answers Fan Questions

Nicole Wilkins is one week out from making a run at the Figure Olympia title in Las Vegas. This weekend she will compete at the IFBB Tournament of Champions as a warm up before the big show. She took time out of her crazy schedule to answer your questions and provide an update on what’s shaken in her world.

Hey Hardbodies!! I’m once again on a plane off to California! This is when I get a lot of work done because I am forced to sit my A.D.D. butt in the seat for 4hrs.
On Friday I will be competing in Jon Lindsay’s IFBB Tournament of Champions in Culver City and 8 days from now I will be on stage competing at the Figure Olympia. So far so good! Igot my suit yesterday (thank you so much Maggie www.maggie-suits.com) and I also got new 5 inch clear stripper heels for the stage 😉 I had been wearing the same pair for the last 7 years so I decided I needed to invest in some new ones. When I put them on, HOLY COW did they feel sooo much better! I should have done it a while ago.

Prep has been a smooth ride. Little bumpy in the beginning which is why I always start a bit earlier, but I feel very good with where I am at now. Whatever happens these next few weeks, all I know is I can leave the stage knowing I trained with heart every workout and gave it everything I had. I want to give a special thank you to my girls at the gym, my clients, my family, of course Kim Oddo, and everyone who has written me emails or posted on my facebook wall. You guys mean so much and I hope to make you proud.

Here are a few questions you have asked me in the last few weeks:

Do you have any tips on airline travel with food? I need to pack for just 5 days.
I will cook a ton of chicken and fish the day before, measure 4-5 oz servings, put them in zip lock sandwich baggies and then freeze it. I also pack protein powders and oats in baggies so I don’t have to worry about measuring everything out when I get there. My fat sources tend to be almonds and avocados (since nut butters are not allowed through security), and my other carb sources are rice cakes. I also may bake a bunch of sweet potato chips and put them in baggies too and freeze. Veggies I will usually just get those when I arrive. When I get to the hotel, I always request a refrigerator to put my food in. If you’re worried about not getting a fridge, bring extra gallon sized ziplock bags. Fill them with ice from the machine at the hotel and put them in your cooler to keep your food cold. A cooler is obviously a must! I absolutely LOVE 6-pack bag coolers. Check them out (www.6packbags.com) and if you decide to get one, enter the code: nicolew to receive a 10% discount.

I am almost 5 weeks into my pre-contest diet and I am having a lot of trouble sleeping.
Are you watching TV late or on the computer? If your mind is occupied by the television it will keep you awake longer. Try taking melatonin or drinking camomile tea before bed. If your mind won’t shut off, try writing it down. I often keep a note pad by my bed if I keep thinking of my next days ‘to-do’ list. Do not drink any caffeine or take any fat burners after about 4pm so that it is out of your system before rest. If you are working out late at night, this may also effect your sleeping patterns. For some, exercise creates more energy which makes it hard to sleep. Try to stay stress free, listen to slow music, and stretch a little bit before laying down.

Have you ever tried Veet or Nair type product before a show for hair removal? How close to the show if so?
No I haven’t. I would be careful with Veet and Nair only because it could change the chemical balance of your skin. The last thing you need is a green skin tone from using a different product. I usually get waxed about 1-2 weeks before the competition. This way it allows enough time for my skin to fully heal and I don’t have to worry about stubble since after the first coat of JanTana you cannot shower it off until the next night after finals are over.

Should I do cardio before weight training or weight training before cardio?

I recommend weight training before cardio or splitting it up into separate sessions. You are strongest with the most energy at the start of your workout so it is best to use that strength on the weights. Afterwards, your glycogen stores are depleted so when you begin cardio you are already in the fat burning zone. If you have no energy after weights and routinely skip cardio, then I would recommend doing cardio in the morning and weight training later after you have had a few meals in your body.

Can you emphasize to new competitors and your fans the importance of regaining weight after your competition season and explain why. I’ve seen many girls begin a very destructive path trying to maintain competition shape and others that struggle to explain why they look so “normal” several weeks at the end of a season.

It is normal for competitors to have between a 7-15 pound weight gain in the off-season which is still leaner than the average American considering most competitors bodyfat is around 9-10% on stage. This weight gain is important for bodies to function normally and to live with a bit more balance. Some who have fast metabolisms can keep it close to 3-7 pounds and are fine and happy. Each individual is different. It becomes a problem when you are obsessed with it and constantly live in fear of gaining weight and get depressed when you have a cheat meal. It also becomes a problem if you gain over 30 pounds each off-season. It reeks havoc on your metabolism having to deal with weight gain and loss repetitively year after year. Remember that your weight will fluctuate on a daily basis. Add more veggies, sodium, eat later or have a hard workout and your weight may go up a couple pounds the next day. BIG DEAL! No one can tell but you! All year round-keep meals 2-3 hours, watch portions, lean proteins at every meal with natural fats and carbs. Have occasional cheats and DO NOT binge. It takes time to learn the difference between in-season and off-season which is why it is so important to be prepared and have a good support system. Remember, to get lean, cheat meals were not a daily part of the program, so to stay lean they can’t be part of the daily program 🙂 Live and learn; it is process and a journey and most of all have fun!

IFBB Tournament of Champions Figure Preview

The 2011 IFBB Tournament of Champions is the last stop on the road to the Olympia. Twenty-three Figure pros have entered this weekend’s competition but only three will qualify for next weekend’s big dance. Four of the competitors are already qualified so it’s highly likely we won’t see anyone knew added to the Figure Olympia. There are of course a few women who may have something to say about that. Let’s break down the field, shall we?

The Hardbody Breakdown:

Teresa Anthony – Teresa has positioned herself as a top contender in every show she enters when she’s in shape. She tends to get better as she goes when she strings shows back to back. She may not be 100% at this show but look for her to be at her best next week at the Olympia. I still see her being in the top call-out and in the top five here.

Michelle Bates – I really like her physique and shape. Look for her to make some refinements since the Europa Supershow and despite her lackluster placings I think she has the potential to be in the mix. I’d like to see her compared to some of the other taller women in the competition to see how she matches up.

Michelle Battista-McDonald – Michelle finished fifth at the 2011 IFBB St Louis Pro but dropped to the bottom of the pack at the Toronto Pro. Michelle turned pro at the 2010 Team Universe. She’ll have her work cut out for her to crack the top five here.

Crystal Chiles – I like Crystal’s look and shape. If she comes in tighter on the lower half than she was at the Phoenix Pro you could see her in the hunt of the top five. She has the potential to hang with the top dogs just needs to dial in the booty and hamstrings.

Krissy Chin – Krissy has already qualified for the Olympia so the pressure is off her to qualify. She will look to gain some momentum heading into the Olympia and be in consideration for a top spot there. She’ll likely be in the top call-out and compared for a top three spot. Krissy has stripped down the muscle and streamlined her physique which is a more suitable look for the division.

Jennifer DeJoya –
Jennifer has yet to crack the top five as a pro and I don’t see her doing it here. She has nice structure however when you’re on the pro level it takes a combination of everything to be in the top spots. If she can finish in the top 10 with this line-up it would be victory for her.

Deborah Denio – Deborah was near her personal best at the Phoenix Pro and was in the bottom of the pack. I’d like to see her work on her posing and relax her arms/hands a bit when she hits her back poses. If she can refine some of the little details she could move out of the tied for 16th spot.

Thea Erichsen – I’ve got nothing. I am not familiar with Thea or her previous contest history. She’s listed as being from Norway so if anyone is familiar with her background please share so we can take a look.

Rachel Gichert – Rachel was 10th at the California Pro earlier this year and if she can finish in the top ten here she can consider it a victory. She’s facing tougher competition than she has in the past so we’ll see how she matches up.

Heather Grace – Heather has been competing all year and her body may be ready for a rest. She turned pro earlier this year at the NPC Jr USAs and immediately jumped into the Cal Pro where she finished 12th. She was on the outside of the top ten at the Phoenix Pro as well. I don’t see her cracking the top five here and if I was her trainer I’d recommend she shut things down for the year and get the noticeable hernia fixed.

Carin Hawkins – Carin is back on stage and tends to fair better in California shows than other events. I have her in the mix for the top ten but getting into the top five will be tough. I’d like to see her with a bit more booty than she had in 2010 and we’ll see what she brings to the stage this weekend.

Soleivi Hernandez – Soleivi battled it out in the NPC ranks before turning pro at last year’s Jr USA. She had a less than stellar pro debut at the Europa Supershow this year. If she hopes to be in anything but the last call-out she will need to have a better tan and be much, much tighter. She’s a beautiful woman but will need to step up her game now that she’s in the pro ranks.

Candice Houston – Candice look great for her at the Europa Supershow this year. I’d like to see her tweak her posing a bit when she hits her back poses. She tends to pull her elbows back a bit too far and not open up enough. I can see her in the top ten here.

Tracey MacDonald – Tracey has been competing for some time and will have her work cut out for her to be in the mix here. I don’t have her in the top ten but if she can finish above the dreaded tied for 16th she can chalk it up as a victory.

Lisa Maloy – Lisa made a return to the stage at the Phoenix Pro after some time off. She was way, way too lean and it wasn’t a healthy look. She needs to fill out for this show or she’ll look took stringy once again. My hope for her is that she doesn’t try to come in the same way as Phoenix.

Michele Mayberry – Michele looked her best at the Phoenix Pro and FINALLY brought a pro package to the stage. Her tan is often an issue with her and it was spot on in Phoenix. Whatever she did for her hair, make up and tanning it was what she needs to do for this and every show here on out. A top ten finish would be a solid showing for her.

Jodie Minear – Jodie is a stunning competitor and has taken some time away from the stage since the St. Louis Pro earlier this year. Her legs looked a little under-sized at that show and if she brings a balanced package to this show she’ll be in the top five. She ditched the “Big Bird” looking suit she rocked last year and as long as she doesn’t have any crazy suits this time she could be in the hunt for an Olympia qualification.

Akane Nigro-Ismeal – She’s a shorter competitor and packs some muscle on her little frame but it works for her. She reminds me of Huong Arcinas a bit and has some of calves that are sic. I like her look and if she comes in conditioned without being overly muscular she’ll be in the top two call-outs.

Eleni Plakitsi – I like Eleni’s look and she should be in the top two call-outs. She was ninth at the Phoenix Pro and with a couple little tweaks to her posing and hand position she’s someone we could see in the top five. Originally from Greece she’s a virtual unknown but take note she’s one to watch.

Ann Pratt – Ann is always a bit more poised and relaxed at the night show. If she can bring that same confidence, relaxed, poised look to prejudging she’ll move up a bit. She’ll need to be a bit tighter than she was in Phoenix to crack the top ten here.

Ellena Reidie – Ellana calls Australia home and will be in some deep waters with this line-up. We have yet to see her at her best when it comes to conditioning and being tight enough to compete with a line up like this. We’ll have to wait and see what she presents but it won’t be easy to crack the top 15 here.

Natalie Waples – Where will the judges place our figure friend from the North? Nat has been third and thirteenth this year. That’s a bit of a stretch in placings. She fairs better in California so look for her to be higher than 13th here. Will she be top three again? I wouldn’t bet on it but a top five spot is realistic but then again we thought that going into the Toronto Pro show. She’s already qualified for the Olympia so she’ll look to get back in the hunt for a top spot with no pressure to qualify.

Nicole Wilkins –
Do we really need to say anything? Nicole is obviously the winner of this show unless someone spikes her pre-contest meals with salt and she shows up looking like a puffer fish. Ya, not likely. It will be interesting to see what look Nicole brings to the stage as it will serve as a preview for what’s to come when she looks to reclaim the top spot at the Figure Olympia. I think we’ll see her at her all-time best and the bigger story will come next week when she squares off against Erin Stern.

Hardbody Top 3 Predictions:
1. Nicole Wilkins
2. Teresa Anthony
3. Krissy Chin

IFBB Tijuana Pro Pro Bikini Preview

This weekend in Tijuana, Mexico nine women will compete for the opportunity to compete in next week’s Bikini Olympia. There was only one entrant up until this week but now we at least have a contest.

The Hardbody Breakdown:

Tiffany Boydston – Tiffany made her pro debut in Phoenix and was outside of the top 10. She’s one of the smaller bikini competitors in the IFBB and still needs time to put on size. Yes, it sounds weird saying a bikini competitor needs to get bigger but when it comes Tiff I think she falls into that boat. She’ll have her work cut out for her to crack the top three here.

Abbie Burrows – Abbie has been in the hunt every show she enters except for one. I think she will be your winner and carry that momentum into the Olympia looking to crack the top six. She’s made the rookie mistakes already and should be at her best this weekend. The one thing I’d like to see Abbie continue to improve on his her confidence when posing. When she’s relaxed and poised she crushes it but when she over thinks things it shows 10 fold on stage.

Wicky Davis –
I like Wicky’s look and she will be the tallest competitor on the stage. Originally from the Netherlands but splits her time between there and Florida now. If Wicky has the conditioning on her lower body she can crack the top three, if not she’ll be on the outside looking in. She was in the dreaded bottom of the barrel position at this year’s Bikini International but hey she has no where to go but up and I think you’ll see an improved competitor from that showing.

Jenny Drennan – Jenny turned pro at the 2010 Team Universe and she was the runner-up in the Louisiana Pro Bikini earlier this year. I look for her to be in the mix for a top spot once again. The pressure is off her as she is already qualified for the Olympia. One of the few blonde competitors in the division, she should stand out in this line up and look for her to be compared for a top spot.

Diana Fields – Diana has been absent from the competitive scene this year and was up and down in her placings last year. We’ll have to wait and see what she brings to the stage. She was one of the first bikini pros and in order to hang in the division now I think she’ll need to show up more polished and drop the goofy facial expressions when posing.

Kelly Gonzales – Kelly was at her all-time best in Phoenix but finished in the lower end of the line-up. I liked the look she brought to the stage and thought she could have placed higher. She is also a smaller competitor and needs a bit more size to be in the top spots. She continues to improve and that’s winning at the end of the day.

Anca Marcus – Anca finished in the fifth place spot at the 2011 Muscle Contest. She’ll obviously hope to improve upon that and return to the Olympia stage. If she brings a tighter backside than she did at the Muscle Contest she’ll be in the mix for the top three. I see her placing in second or third at this show.

Christie Marquez – Christie continues to improve with each pro show while other falter. She won’t be last here but getting in the top three will be a challenge. All she can do is continue to improve her stand presence and bring up the sassiness on stage when she presents her body.

Christy Merritt – Christy had a break out year in 2010 going from an amateur to the Olympia stage within a few months. The 2011 season hasn’t been as fruitful yet as her placings have been outside of the top five. She’ll look to return to the 2010 form and head back for her second Olympia. She has a chance at the top three but it won’t be easy.

Hardbody Top 3 Olympia Prediction:
1. Abbie Burrows
2. Anca Marcus
3. Jenny Drennan

Who do you think will finish in the top three at this show? HOLA!

Dianna Dahlgren Recaps Her Road to The Olympia

IFBB Bikini Pro Dianna Dahlgren is headed to her second Olympia and is carrying the momentum of a victory into the big dance. She takes a minute to share her thoughts on the past few weeks and what’s up in the days ahead. Dianna has successfully positioned herself as one of the top contenders in this year’s Bikini Olympia.

Hello again!!

Thank you to Isaac & Hardbody.com for allowing me to do another blog before heading into the BIG SHOW! I’m so happy beyond belief and can’t wait!

The Dallas Europa was a BLAST to say the least! I hadn’t competed in almost a year, so this was a “come back” party that I had for myself. LOL! My goal was to be happy no matter what. I figured… the judges hadn’t seen me in so long who knows if they will like me or what I have changed in my physique! The weekend ended with a 4th place finish and I was so excited because I qualified for the Olympia! The top 3 girls were all qualified coming into this show so when that happens, the 4th place finisher will qualify.

I was lean in Dallas so I knew that for Phoenix I could relax a tad bit and be fuller 🙂 It was a 2 week time period before I would be on stage again so I didn’t do too much damage with my diet. I always do cardio the morning after a show, my goals are always to stay on somewhat of a regimen, but to be honest with all of you I am so physically and mentally exerted from the weekend that I am out of whack for 3-4 days. After that I have to put the pieces back to the puzzle and keep going!

I enjoyed lots of fats headed into Phoenix, when I say fats: steak, nuts and almond butter… YUM! By the time I was ready to hit the stage again I was nervous! Even though my trainer was saying I was ready, I didn’t feel like it just because I am used to seeing my abs shredded, its just genetics. But in Phoenix the overall goal was for them not to be so hard. Very pleased with what happened because I ended up walking out of there with a win! My 2nd pro win and it was great to just enjoy that. Ever since last summer, I dealt with a lot of personal issues I was having with myself, family and work, I just couldn’t pull myself together for anything, so for me to come back, qualify, then win is very surreal for me and I really want to thank the Lord, my parents, and the people always sending me love and encouragement. THANK YOU! It really does mean the world to me 🙂

So now, I am 8 days away from my 2nd Olympia and can I say I wish it was here already! I’m working away until then and I can’t wait! Nothing crazy this show and my goals are all set. I can’t wait until next Friday comes and the judges call my number! TIME FOR SOME FUNNNNNN! 🙂

I hope all of you tune into the live webcast and follow along on twitter or better yet, ATTEND the Olympia! It’s such an amazing place to be, tons of people, tons of action, never a dull moment! Helloooo LAS VEGAS!! Friday September 16th is my Prejudging and Finals WOOOHOOOOO!! Keep me in your prayers and I will update you after THE BIG SHOW!!!

Thank you so much 🙂

Gina’s Meat Pick’n Tips

Gina Aliotti gives some tips on choosing healthy meat and what her favorite type of meat is. Do you have a rule of thumb you follow for picking out meat? Share it in the comments field.

G’S TIP OF THE WEEK
Not all red meat is created equal. There are definitely ways to enjoy beef without all the fat. Go for lean and extra lean cuts. These would include round steaks, strip, tenderloin and top sirloin. Look for steaks with the least amount of visible fat (the white marbling). Select grass fed over corn fed and look for “select” rather than “prime”, as prime is fattier and higher in unhealthy saturated fats. Looking for another low fat option… My favorite is Bison (aka Buffalo) which is very low in fat but high in protein. For a 3 oz serving it only has 2 grams of fat!

Have a great day!
