Figure Pro Cheryl Brown’s Son a Witness in Trayvon Martin Shooting

The shooting of Trayvon Martin has been making world news in recent weeks. A google search on the case will turns up thousands of stories. It’s a very unfortunate situation that has people up in arms. Celebrities have taken to twitter to make a statement and President Obama has even commented on this tragedy.

IFBB Figure Pro, Cherly Brown and her attorney appeared on Al Sharpton’s “PoliticsNation” yesterday to describe the police interview of her 13-year old son. Cheryl’s son was a witness in the killing of Trayvon Martin and when asked if she believed the shooting was in self-defense, Cheryl said, “Not at all.”

2012 IFBB Pro Governor’s Cup Review & Results

The inaugural California’s Governor’s Cup is in the books and three IFBB Pros left Sacramento with their first victories. Karin Kimura from Boise, Idaho edged out Denver’s Sara Hurrle by two points in her Women’s Physique debut. Heather Dees notched her first IFBB victory nearly exactly two years after her overall win at the NPC Utah Classic. Arizona’s Matt Cristianer made history by becoming the first IFBB Men’s Physique winner.

2012 IFBB GOVERNOR’S CUP – The HARDBODY 411:
Sacramento, California March 24, 2012

WOMEN’S PHYSIQUE (#WPD)
There’s a bit of confusion around the final placings. The first two pro women’s physique shows did not see a change from prejudging scores however at this show the top five were re-judged at the night show. The evening scores favored Karin and in the end launched her over Sara Hurrle by two points. Karin was the 2011 Overall NPC Nationals winner and she kept her WPD winning streak alive. She carries a bit more muscle than last week’s WPD Pro winner, Sara Hurrle. Hurrle was told by the judges that she was softer in the evening and that’s why she finished out of the winner circle this time. Susan Salazar brought and improved look fro her Phoenix outing and it positioned her in third place. Marina Lopez continues to be a contender in the top five and if she can shed a bit more muscle she’ll move up. Akane Nigro-Ismeal rounded out the top five in her WPD debut.

7. Valerie Gangi 21
8. Patricia Wood 24
9. Lisa Giesbrecht 27

FIGURE
Heather Dees took home top honors for the first time in the pro ranks and in the process qualified for a return trip to the Olympia. She’s brought her waistline down from last year and continues to refine the look she brings to the stage. Krissy Chin finished in the runner-up position and is still looking for her first pro title. Allison Frahn edged out Jami DeBenard by one point to take the third place spot. A bit of a sleeper pick heading into this show, Carin Hawkins rounded out the top five. This was one of the largest line-ups we’ve seen in 2012 and should be more in line with the numbers for each event. The next stop on the Figure circuit is the Europa Orlando on April 27-28th.

MEN PHYSIQUE
Matt Cristianer continued to make history in the new men’s division with his victory here. He was the overall winner at the 2011 NPC JR USAs and had the winning look for the first pro event. Heading into the show, I felt Matt was “the look” and the judges agreed. Matt has a great genetics and a clean, marketable look. He beat out a field of 10 and if the judging continues down this path I think it will be an appealing division for more men who don’t want to carry the size of a bodybuilder but obviously work out.

The Sport of Cheating on Your Girlfriend – Reebok Under Fire

Reebok has been on the upswing recently, at least in Crossfit community, due in large part to their association with the CrossFit Games. Reebok is the title sponsor of the Crossfit Games, an event that seeks to find the “fittest on earth”. Their involvement in these types of events help build credibility, unlike their “toning shoes” which the FTC deemed false advertising and slapped them with a $25 million dollar fine.

The term “Sport of Fitness” was coined by the founder of CrossFit, Greg Glassman, after he saw how competitive people were with the “workout of the day”. Reebok is in the news for a poster that reads, “Reebok The Sport of Fitness Has Arrived.” It’s not portion of the poster that’s causing the buzz. It’s the headline that accompanies the poster that reads, “Cheat on your girlfriend, not on your workout.”

Well, that’s certainly what women across the world want to hear. Um Ya, not so much.

Reebok spokesman, Dan Sarro told CBSBoston.com the ad was not part of a global marketing campaign and only appeared at a local gym partner in Germany. Thanks to Social Media it’s become a global topic and as you can imagine one met with outrage.

Cheaterviille.com‘s founder wrote a letter to Reebok’s headquarters stating, “This form of advertising shows a dishonest and disrespectful attitude towards women and your company should be ashamed to have even placed this ad in various places thinking it would be perceived in any other way.”

Sarro said Reebok removed the signs as soon as they were made aware of them and apologized for their offensive nature.

It could be a publicity stunt or an isolated incident. Whichever it is people are talking about Reebook but not in a positive way. Earlier this month The Wall Street Journal talked about Reebook’s financial woes.

What if the roles were reversed and it said… Cheat on Your Boyfriend, Not Your Workout… Would it cause the same controversy or would women find it empowering?

Saudi Women Approved For Olympics In London

Women of Saudi Arabia have never been allowed to compete in the Olympics but that may all change at this year’s Olympic Games. Saudi Arabia along with Qatar and Brueni have never sent women to the Olympic games. Saudi Arabia has been one of the only countries in the world that does not permit women to participate in organized sports.

A 2008 report on BBCnews.com hinted that increased pressure was being placed on Saudi Arabia to allow women into the Olympics games. The article implied that if women were not allowed to enter, the male team would barred from competition.

PRESS RELEASE:

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) – A Saudi Arabian newspaper says Crown Prince Nayef has approved plans for the ultra conservative Muslim country to send female athletes to the Olympics for the first time at the London Games.

The Saudi-owned and London-based Al-Hayat newspaper says Nayef, who is heir to the aging king, has approved the participation of women at the London Olympics in sports that “meet the standards of women’s decency and don’t contradict Islamic laws.”

Saudi sports officials could not be reached to confirm Tuesday’s report in the Arabic-language newspaper.

The IOC said Monday that progress has been made in talks with Saudi Olympic officials on sending female athletes and officials to the games.

Saudi Arabia is one of three countries that have never included women on their Olympic teams, along with Qatar and Brunei. The International Olympic Committee is now hopeful that all three will send female representatives to London, marking the first time every competing nation does so.

“The IOC is confident that Saudi Arabia is working to include women athletes and officials at the Olympic Games in London in accordance with the international federations’ rules,” the IOC said Monday.

IOC President Jacques Rogge said in an interview with The Associated Press last week that he was “optimistic” that Saudi Arabia would send women to London.

“It depends on the possibilities of qualifications, standards of different athletes,” he said. “We’re still discussing the various options.”

2012 IFBB California Governor’s Cup Pro – Competitor Lists & Preview

This weekend 19 Figure Pros and 9 Women Physique Pros will take the stage in Sacramento for the inaugural California Governor’s Cup. This is a new show to 2012 and it will also feature the debut of the men’s physique division. This should be a competitive event and our West Coast correspondent, Ron Avidan will be there to cover all the action.

Look for Krissy Chin, Jami DeBernard, Alea Suarez and Heather Dees to be your leading ladies at this show. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see them finish in the top spots. Wendy Fortino will make her pro debut after turning pro at the 2011 NPC USAs. Jodie Minear has switched up her training and will look to get back in the swing of things here. A competitive group of Figure competitors.

13. Cheri Lewis
14. Tracey MacDonald
15. Simone Mack
16. Julie Mayer-Hyman
17. Michelle McDonald
18. Jodie Minear
19. Alea Suarez

This could be the most competitive show in the new division. Patricia Wood turned pro at the 2011 NPC USAs and if she brings in a tighter booty she could be in the top spots. Susan Salazar will look to move up since her WPD debut at the Phoenix show. Karin Kimura will make her debut after taking top honors at the NPC Nationals last year. She’ll likely have more muscle than last week’s WPD winner Sara Hurrle but I could see the two of them battling for the win. My dark horse pick for the weekend to contend for first is Akane Nigro-Ismeal. She has the symmetry and was a little powerhouse in figure, don’t be surprised if she is called out first and standing near the middle.

1. Tracy Beckham
2. Lisa Giesbrecht
3. Sara Hurrle
4. Karin Kimura
5. Marina Lopez

The dudes will take the stage for the first time and let’s hope they don’t get their posing trunks over the first show. There’s a variety of physiques and they range the gamut. Like any new division it will evolve as it goes. I prefer Matt Christianer’s look the best in this field but we’ll see how it shakes out on Saturday.

2012 St. Louis Pro Bikini Review, Results & Opinions

Seven IFBB Bikini Pros  took the stage at the St. Louis Pro over the weekend. It’s a bit disappointing to see such a low turn out from the bikini competitors, especially given the number of pros in the division. Jack and Ann Titone did a great job with this event and treated the competitors as good as you’ll find at any show. St. Louis is easy to fly into from pretty much any where. Hopefully with the new Olympia qualification system we’ll see more women entering shows. If not you’ll see more shows being removed from the calendar due to the cost and time that goes into an event.

The judges kept all seven women out at once but did a number of comparisons with the line up. It appeared Jennifer Andrews would repeat as the champ however there were a few others who could make a strong case for the win. The judges moved the women around a few times and it left some wondering who would prevail. When the awards were announced it was Jennifer Andrews repeating as the champ and her fellow Bombshell sista, Jennifer Chapman in second.

HARDBODY 411:

1. Jennifer Andrews
Jennifer was tighter than she was at the Bikini International where she finished 12th. She was the champion at this show last year and it was her best finish since. Jennifer has a bit of a beauty queen presentation to her, with a constant smile and very poised the entire time she’s on stage. I like her legs crossed from the back but don’t care for the legs spread wise while posing her backside.

2. Jennifer Chapman
Jennifer continue to move her way up in the placings and has a bit more sass than Jennifer Andrews on stage. I’m not a big fan of the legs spread wide pose from the back though.  I wouldn’t have argued if she took top honors here as it was one of her best looks since turning pro. The finish moves her up in the rankings for an Olympia birth. She may not win a pro show but if she can stay consistently in the top five she’ll head to Vegas this Fall.

3. Taylor Matheny
Taylor has a great bikini body but she struggles to present it on stage. She’ll have to watch that her obliques don’t get any bigger and definitely needs some posing work. If she can pose her physique better she’ll move up. I wasn’t crazy about her make up at this show as it was a little flat and kind of muddy. She’s a beautiful woman with the potential to do well, if she tweaks the little details she’ll be a contender.

4. Michelle Brannan
Michelle’s physique looked great in her pro debut. I would have liked to see her with a little darker tan as she was a little washed out on stage. I’d also like to see her with different make up at her next show. It didn’t flatter her facial features and with a little more make up I think it will help. If she tightens her booty a bit and tweaks the little details she’ll move up. I thought she had the best bikini body in the show however the little details kept her out of the top spots.

5. Cristina Vujnich
Cristina has a rock’n bikini bod and is another competitor who just needs to fix the little details. Some people have suggested she get extensions for her hair. I like her short hair and it’s a look she can pull off, where many others can’t. It’s also become part of her identity, at least in my opinion. Her tanning was spot on, whereas in the past it has been too dark and a bit red. I wasn’t crazy about her eyeshadow makeup and found that a little distracting. She has a pretty long torso so it comes down to her posing and working hr angles on stage. If she can make these little tweaks she’ll be in the top spots.

6. Candyce Graham
Candyce didn’t seem like herself on stage. She was a tad bit off in her conditioning and the sassy presentation we’ve seen from her was missing. She did ditch the “angry posing” which is great. If she comes in a bit tighter and has a bit more relaxed energy on stage she’ll be back up in the mix.

7. Beth White
Beth has a cute look to her but the little details hurt her as well. I don’t think the short hair works for her or at least how it looked at this show. If she can improve her posing a bit and get more relaxed on stage she’ll move up in the placings. She needs to sass it up a bit while on stage.

St. Louis Pro Women’s Physique Results, Review & Opinions

The second IFBB Pro Women’s Physique competition is in the books and it’s clear what look this new division is headed. During the morning portion of the St. Louis Pro, the judges called out just two of the nine competitors in the first call-out. Typically you’ll see 3-6 competitors called out first however when only two names are announced it sends a clear message. Translation – this is the look we like and what’s going to be rewarded.

Like any new division, it needs time to mature and evolve. Also keep in mind, the judges can only go by what is on stage that day. If no one fits the ideal, they have to reward the closest thing to “the look” on that day.  That is what happened at the first Women’s Physique competition in Phoenix. When I spoke to the judges after the St. Louis Pro they made it known that they are sticking to the criteria that was put in place for the division. They are NOT looking for smaller bodybuilders. They never said it would be a smaller version of a bodybuilder and fans, trainers, gurus and keyboard warriors need to get that idea out of their heads. I recall hearing one “expert” tell Heather Armbrust that she would be great for the new division if she came in a bit smaller. Sorry bub but not even close to the look of the new division. I’m not a big fan of referencing percentages and prefer pointing to a photo or a specific physique for an ideal. It gives people a visual reference and takes the guess work out of interpreting what look the judges are after. Which brings us to this show. If you want a visual reference as to what direction the division is headed, look at the winner of the St. Louis Pro. That doesn’t mean she is the exact look the judges want but it is the closest to “the look” that has stepped on stage to date. Give the division time to develop and evolve before getting your panties (or whitey tidies) in a bunch.

HARDBODY 411 on the St. Louis Pro:

1. Sara Hurrle
Sara was preparing for the 2012 Governor’s Cup Figure competition and two weeks out was told she needed to back off her training or she’d be too big and too conditioned for the show. Instead of backing off her training she stepped it up and entered her first Women’s Physique competition. It paid off for her as she fit the criteria of the new division. She has a balanced physique and her symmetry will help her beat out others in future competitions. Sara has a nice back and a ton of energy on stage. She could tighten up the glutes and hamstrings a bit for her next show but that may come at the risk of being “too hard” in her upper body. She had muscle without being to muscular and it’s what the direction the division is headed.

2. Michelle Blank
Michelle suffered a calf injury before the Arnold Classic and it kept her out of the Fitness International. She also planned to compete at this show in the Fitness division however the injury wasn’t healing. Since she was in shape, she decided to compete in the new division. Michelle held her own on the stage and if she decides to do future competitions in this division she should fair well. She needs to bring up her legs a bit in order to be more balance but has a great back pose. If she works on her posing it will help her as well. It’s to be expected though given that she had next to no time to perfect her poses.

3. Jennifer Smythe
I like Jennifer’s look and think she will fair well in this new division. She used to compete in Figure as an amateur and found success at the 2011 Team Universe when she switched divisions and turned pro. She wasn’t compared to the top two during prejudging but was at the night show. I might have moved her up into second ahead of Michelle after seeing them compared. Jennifer’s biggest challenge is her posing. When she hits some of her poses they aren’t flattering to her physique and when she did her routine at night she hit 2-3 poses repeatedly. I’d like to see her incorporate a few more poses in her routine, although it doesn’t count towards the overall placing. If she can improve her posing she’ll move up.

4. Jennifer Robinson
Jennifer is another competitor who competed in Figure as an amateur before making the switch. She has nice symmetry and balance but wasn’t quite conditioned enough for this show. It’s a tough balancing act as she has a little more muscle than the winners and if she’s more conditioned it might make her look even bigger. If she can keep the muscle in check while bringing in a tighter backside she’ll continue to contend at shows. She may also need to bring her delts and arms down a bit from what they looked like at this show.

5. Marina Lopez
Marina was the bubble girl at this show. She placed fifth at this show because she had the least amount of muscle and hardness of those placing behind her. If this is another show with more competitors with the look of the top three she’d be out of the top five. Marina competed as a figure competitor years ago and then took things up a notch making the switch to female bodybuilding. She has a feminine look and given the direction of this division she could fair well if she does one of two things… Bring down her size and strip off some muscle or ramp it back up and compete as a female bodybuilder.

6. Mikaila Soto
Mikaila was rockin green hair and a green suit to coincide with St. Patrick’s Day. She’s a good example that when you have large tattoos it’s best not to try and cover them with make up. They weren’t distracting despite taking up a majority of her body, at least to me. Mikalia competed in the pro figure division but didn’t fair well in most shows. If she can downsize her muscle she’ll move up in this division. I do think she’ll do better in Women’s Physique then she would if she went back to Figure. She carried more muscle than those placing ahead of her and in order to place higher she’ll need to come in smaller given the look the judges are after.

7. Antoinette Thompson
Antoinette competed as a female bodybuilder and was more often than not out of the top spots. She’s a taller competitor with longer muscles than her fellow competitors. She also carried more muscle then others in this line up. Her legs were about twice the size of the winner. She’ll need to shave off some muscle and come in tighter in the backside then she did if she wants to move up in the placing. Her outfit at the night show was an interesting choice and I was waiting for her to break out a whip but it never happened.

8. Tracy Bodner
Tracy competed in figure and female bodybuilding as an amateur. She switched to the NPC Women’s Physique Division and moved up in the ranks over the course of three shows before turning pro. She’s in a similar position now and it will  be a battle for her to climb into a top spot as a pro. Tracy looked out of place during prejudging due to her tan or lack there of. She looked pasty white compared to the others during prejudging but corrected if at the night show. She didn’t look like she was having fun during prejudging but at the night show brought a darker tan and more energy.

9. LaDrissa Bonivei
LaDrissa has a nice physique but it’s simply way to muscular for what the judges are looking for in this division. She has a nice back double bicep pose however her physique will need to come way down in size if she wants to move up and place well in this division. She turned pro at the 2011 NPC USAs and comparing photos from that show to her look as a pro, it looks like she added significant size. If she returns to the look she had as an amateur she’ll fair much better.

Top five - 2012 St. Louis Pro Women's Physique Division

The next Women’s Physique show will be March 24, 2012 in Sacramento. Look for Sara Hurrle to do well once again and we’ll see who else enters the show in attempt to be part of the new look. Check out photos from the 2012 St. Louis Pro here.

What do you think of the new division and the direction it’s headed?

St. Louis Pro Fitness Results & Review

Nine IFBB Fitness Pros took the stage on Saturday at the St. Louis Pro Fitness event. Promoter’s Jack and Ann Titone rolled out the red carpet for the women in a division that’s seeing fewer and fewer events. The odds-on-favorites stepped up and delivered as expected. Heading into the event many felt he show would come down to Oksana Grishina and Bethany Wagner. Bethany was leading after the 2-piece round however Oksana’s routine put her in the winner’s position for the first time in her pro career.

The 411 on all the competitors:

1. Oksana Grishina
Oksana came into this show as the most conditioned competitor. It was a bit reminiscent of the look she brought to the stage years ago when she first started competing in the IFBB Pro League. She’s refined her physique but still need a bit of work on her posing. You could tell Oksana was confident and had a bit of swagger to her when she took the stage. At times in the past, you could tell she was unsure of herself in the two-piece round but not this time. She landed in second in the 2-piece round and it’s where I had her. Anyone who has seen her routines knows she’s a performer and she put on another great performance. She took top honors in the routine round and justifiably so. This was her first pro victory and positions her as one of the top contenders heading into the 2012 Olympia.

2. Bethany Cisternino
Bethany had the best shape and symmetry of all the competitors. She won the two-piece round with ease and could easily hold her own in a Figure line-up. I think she has one of the best physiques in the Fitness division and should be a top 5 contender in every 2-piece comparison. She has incredible gymnastic skills and some killer strength moves. If she’s able to tighten up the choreography a bit in her routine she’ll be a threat come Olympia time. Another solid performance from Bethany.

3. Danielle Ruban
I really like Danielle’s look and the potential she’s showing early in her pro career. She has a nice physique that’s balanced well. She could have used a bit darker tan and her posing from the back could be tweaked just a bit. She has a good routine but it could transition from move to move a bit better. Her routine outfit started to come apart at the end of the show and thankfully she didn’t slip on any of the plucked feathers. Look for Danielle to be a top contender in the future.

4. Allison Ethier
Allison came in a bit tighter than she had been at the Arnold however could still be a bit more conditioned from behind. She continues to improve her physique and presentation to keep her in contention. Allison did a better job with her routine this time than she had at the Fitness International. The routine helped move her up into a top five spot this time and if she can be consistent in a couple more shows should could make her way to the Olympia with the new point system.

5. Melissa Frederick
Melissa was in the top spots for the physique round but I would have had her a couple places lower. She has nice delts but needs to fill out a bit more and tighten up from behind. She did a decent job with her routine but would like to see her pick up the energy and pace a bit more in future shows. A top five finish has to sit well with her.

6. Tiffany Robinson
I liked the look Tiffany brought to the stage. She carries a bit more muscle than some of the other competitors and it may have dropped her a bit. I’d like to see her improve her posing from the back and I think it would help in her presentation. A simple lifting of her shoulders and popping her butt out would help. A solid routine and with a few tweaks she could move up at future shows. She has the skills and physique to be a top five finisher and I had her in the top five on my scorecard.

7. Amy Peterson
Amy could have been a bit more conditioned in the physique round and I would have liked to see a routine that flowed better. She has some solid strength skills and with a bit more stage time I think she’ll improve. Sometimes it takes competing more to gain the confidence needed to hang with the top contenders.

8. Kayde Puckett
Kayde improved her physique from the Arnold however she was still far from the conditioned we saw her when she turned pro. I really liked the Darth Vader routine she did at the Arnold however she felt the need to change it this time around. I was not a fan of the Nicki Minja routine at all. The dress was big and bulky and she struggled to remove it. When she removed the dress she had on bright leggings and when she performed her routine all you could see was a florescent ball of colors. Most of this routine was her dancing and singing. If she can come in tighter and she brings back the Darth Vader routine she’ll move up. If she keeps with the lip syncing, dancing Nicki routine she’ll stay at the bottom of the pack.

9. Michelle Gales
Michelle was off with her conditioning and when it came time to do her routine it was the same one we saw all last year when she turned pro. She was docked for swear words in the routine at the NPC JR USA and since then had them cut out. The cut of the music however sounds like the routine is ending or something is wrong with the volume. I’d liked to see her tighten up, bring a new routine and bring the same sass we saw last year when she was an amateur.

Congratulations to all the women for taking the stage and a job well done. You can see photos from the show here. The next IFBB pro fitness event will be held at the PA Pro, the first weekend in May.

Erin Stern Successfully Defends Australia Pro Figure Title

Erin Stern and Nicole Wilkins have developed a bit of a rivalry in the IFBB Pro Figure division.  Earlier this month, Nicole won the Figure International title and Erin finished in second. The two have finished first and second every time they’ve competed on the same stage, for the last three years. They met again this weekend at the Australia Pro Figure competition and finished one and two, once again. When the results were read, Erin’s name was announce the winner. Nicole finished in second and Larissa Reiss landed in third. Rounding out the top five was Alicia Harris in fourth and Jennifer Hernandez in fifth.

Hardbody Profile: Michelle Brannan The UK’s First Bikini Pro

Michelle Brannan is making her IFBB Pro Bikini debut this weekend at the St. Louis Pro. She has a background in dance and after seeing a video on YouTube she decided to pursue competing in the Bikini division. Michelle made history last year when she became the first woman from the UK to achieve IFBB Pro status. I caught up Michelle to learn more.

Born in:
Hampshire UK

Currently Live in:
London UK

What age did you start dancing?
I started dancing Latin Ballroom at 18 years old

What’s your favorite dance to perform?
I love to dance Lambada, Lambada is a sensual Brazilian partner danced now danced to various Latin and afro Latin music such as Zouk and Kizomba.

Do you have a dance partner for Lambada?
I don’t currently have a dance partner, I took a break from dancing to concentrate on competing. I am hoping to dance again soon.

What’s your favorite dance to teach?
I am UKA certified to teach Lambada and as this is my favourite dance I love to pass on my knowledge.

Have you seen Dancing with the Stars – does the UK have a version of that?
We have Strictly Come Dancing which I think is similar.

Do  you think you could teach someone who has never danced to dance?
I could teach anyone to dance. Every skill is learned and even if you are born with a good sense of rhythm, you are not born knowing the steps. Everyone has to start somewhere.

How did you get started in physique competitions?
In 2009 I came across a video clip on You Tube of a Bikini fitness contest and was blown away! These girls bodies were another level. I decided I wanted to look like that so I researched everything about fitness and bodybuilding. Six month later I entered my first show and won, it was such an incredible feeling I decided to continue to compete. In October 2010 IFBB’s UK amateur federation UKBFF introduced Bikini and I won their first ever show and then placed 1st the British Grand Prix Amateur Olympia. In June 2011 I joined Team Bombshell who helped me improve my physique and I subsequently placed 3rd at IFBB Amateur World Championships in Serbia in October 2011 where I  earned my Pro card.  I am the very first UK athlete to earn IFBB Pro status through the Bikini class

Do you think your dance background has helped you with your stage presence for Bikini?
Dance has been a massive help to me, it has given me  experience of being on stage and performing for an audience which nothing quite prepares you for unless you have been up there.  I used to dance with a Salsa group who were the twice European Salsa Team champions and we performed all over UK and in Egypt and Greece. Latin dance as also helped me with body awareness, I am used to putting my body into different positions and contracting and relaxing certain muscles, it helps that I don’t have to look down on stage to make sure my legs are in the right place!  I am still working on my stage presence, confidence is key, I have done 7 shows now but I still get nerves going on stage.

This will be your pro debut this weekend, what are you most excited about?
I am so excited to be competing as an IFBB Pro, my main goal when I started competing was to get my Pro card so now I have done it, anything else is truly an honour.

For those that don’t know where did you turn pro?
I turned Pro at the IFBB Amateur World Championships in Serbia last October.  Being from UK the only route to pro status is to place 1st at the IFBB Amateur European Championships or Top 3 at IFBB Amateur World championships both of which contests you have to qualify for. At the World Championships there were 28 girls in my class and all the best of their country so competition is tough, I feel very lucky to be an IFBB Bikini Pro.

How does it feel to be the first Bikini Pro from the UK?
I am very honoured to be the first Bikini Pro from UK, I was lucky enough to represent UK at the European and Worlds Championships and at the first ever Arnold Europe. I am hoping to be the first UK Bikini competitor at the Olympia

What’s the biggest difference competing in the States vs the UK?
The biggest difference is that most of the shows in UK are Amateur. In October we will have Pro bikini for the very first time at the British Grand Prix. Bikini is new to UK and Europe but is growing in popularity.

What type of weight training do you do?
When I started I thought I had to lift as heavy as I possibly could; and in the beginning that was not a lot but since joining Team Bombshell, I do a wider variety of training incorporating higher reps. I love training legs but I try to stick to lighter weights as my legs get lean and defined quickly so I need to keep the body balanced.

Any supplements you like and would recommend to women?
I use a whey protein with my oats in the morning and couldn’t live without `good bacteria` tablets for a healthy digestive system

Where can people find more information on you?
My www.michellebrannan.com or find me on facebook.

Thanks Michelle and good luck!

Olympia Qualification Series – Adapts a Point System

The IFBB Professional League introduced an Olympia qualification rule last Fall that many fans and competitors scratching their heads. The change reduced the number of Olympia Qualifications to the top four at the Olympia, top three at the Arnold Classic, top two at the New York Pro and the winner at all other shows. The announcement noted that the Olympia may offer special invites with the revised system. Thankfully we won’t have to worry about how a special invite selection will take place. We’ll also see a renewed interest from competitors and fans with an announcement that was made today.

The IFBB Pro League introduced a new Olympia Qualification system that is based on points. Effective immediately, competitors who enter and place consistently in the top five will still have a chance to see the Olympia stage. The five competitors (in each division) with the highest point totals will qualify to compete at the Olympia.

Also with this new announcement, all competitors who place in the top five at the 2012 Olympia will be qualified for the following year (2013). Last year only the top four in each division automatically qualified for this year (2012) Olympia.

In a press release issued by the IFBB, League Chairman Jim Manion said, “We think this is a great way to expand the number of Olympia qualifiers beyond those who win contests and to build excitement for all IFBB Pro League events throughout the course of the year.”

Props to Mr. Manion, the IFBB Pro League, Robin Chang and everyone else involved in this change. It’s a move that will build excitement back into the shows and follow who is in the top five point totals throughout the year.

Points and qualifications in the IFBB Pro Olympia Qualification Series will be awarded as follows:

Sara Hurrle Has Some Unfinished Business in St. Louis

IFBB Pro Sara Hurrle trained for weeks and was on top of her game heading into the 2011 St. Louis Pro Figure competition. Unfortunately Sara didn’t step on stage to see how she matched up to her competition. Instead of waiting for her number to be called out at prejudging she was laying in a hospital. The night before the show, Sara passed out which resulted in a concussion and a trip to the emergency room. Everything checked out fine and she was back in action a day later. While her health was in check, no competitor wants to miss the event they’ve prepped weeks to see arrive.

Sara went on to compete in the 2011 California Pro where she finished sixth but it didn’t erase the feelings from St. Louis. Fast-forward to present date and Sara is sitting 12 days out from the Sacramento Pro Figure competition, her first competition since the Cal Pro. She’s fresh off a trip to California where she’d done a couple photo shoots and supported her bikini client Lindsey Morrison. Sara is faced with a new challenge. She’s looking a bit too muscular and will need to nearly stop training for the next week.

Say WHAT?

Many women have been faced with this dilemma where they love to train hard and heavy but put on muscle easily. When they enter a Figure competition they’re told they are too muscular and in turn have to change the style of training they love.

Fortunately, there’s a new division in the IFBB ranks that will opens the doors for women like this to still compete. Enter Sara Hurrle. After giving it some thought and receiving a bit of encouragement from a few people in the industry Sara has decided to make the switch. She’ll be heading back to St. Louis this weekend to finish what she started a year ago. The only thing different is she won’t be wearing heels and instead of quarter turns, she’ll be hitting a bicep pose or two in the new Women’s Physique Division.

I asked Sara why she wants to compete in this new division and she shared, “I want to be able to promote feminine muscle. It’s what I’ve been a fan of 16 years old. I’m excited to support this initiative. I want to get it out there that women don’t need to be bigger to compete in this division and it’s obtainable.” She went on to say, “I am a bit of a meat head. I love to lift heavy and this gives me a chance to lift how I want to lift and come into a show how I like to come into a show.”

Sara hadn’t thought of competing in the division but after seeing the direction that it’s headed she got excited that it could be a new opportunity. “I’m excited to be able to flex, which I couldn’t do in Figure”, Sara said with great enthusiasm. Many women can relate to how Sara feels when she says, “I want to train how I like to train.”

Sara is a perfect example of leading by example. She has a team of 30 women that she trains (TEAM INSIDE OUT) and will show women that female muscle can be sexy and nothing to be intimated by. Although she is a trainer herself, Sara enlists the guidance of Kim Oddo for her competition prep. It helps to have someone like Kim take the guess work out of your own prep. Look for Sara to strut her physique this weekend in St. Louis and make an immediate impact in the new division.

Front Preview - 4 Days Out

For more information on Sara visit her facebook page (just don’t poke her or ask her to join Farmville) and for more info on the St. Louis Pro show visit npcmidwest.com.

Hardbody Interview: Recording Artist Ali Lee – Keep It Right There

I met Ali Lee at the 2011 LA Fit Expo and she definitely looked the part of a fitness model but so do hundreds of other women. Looks will only take someone so far but anyone who has met Ali knows she has the “it factor”. You may not be able to put your finger on exactly what “it” is right away but you know there’s more than meets the eyes. Little did I know, Ali has already accomplished more in 22 years than some people do in a life time. She’s a classically trainer singer, dancer and has a single (“Keep It Right There“) that’s climbing the charts and showing up on MTV.

I caught up with Ali to learn more about her and what she’s doing to stay in shape while traveling non-stop. She was kind enough to do this interview and shared some valuable nuggets of wisdom along the way. My favorite is when Ali shared, “If you feel it and you work for it, you can achieve what you want.” That’s living in a hardbody state of mind. Enjoy…

Born in:
Tallahassee, Florida

Currently live in:
I’m currently between homes in Georgia, Kentucky, and Florida.

Do you have siblings?
I have six cousins that I love like siblings. Some of us are only children and we are all pretty much around the same age so we are very close. Our family is big on making time to spend with each other.

Were you a trouble maker growing up or the good kid?
I was the instigator growing up, or at least I always got blamed for whatever we were in trouble for. At school I really didn’t try to be a troublemaker but I was kind of odd so I felt like “why should I try to fit in anyway?”

Any pets?
I am a major dog lover. I have five pets. Four dogs and a neighborhood cat (but I love her like my own).

What would be the coolest animal to have as a pet?
This will sound like an exaggeration but MY pets are the coolest pets to have! Every pet I’ve ever owned has been great! Except for my fish that died.

Afraid of…?
I’m not afraid of jack squat! I’m not really squeamish and I don’t have any phobias.

What did you want to be when you “grew up”?
I wanted to be a lot of things: a gymnast, a ballerina, a singer, an astronaut… My mom always told me I could be anything I wanted so I wanted to be everything!

How old were you when you started singing?
I would say three.

What was your favorite song to sing?
“Johnny B Goode” was one of my favorites. My mom always listened to 50’s and 60’s music when I was growing up so I have a lot of old favorites.

You mentioned Whitney Houston was an inspiration on your blog. What’s your favorite Whitney song to sing?
Thanks for reading my blog! I actually quoted one of my favorite Whitney songs, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” My favorite Whitney song to sing is “Saving all my Love for You”

Any other artist that you looked to or look to today as inspiration?
I’d love to meet or work with the artists who inspire me! Bruno Mars, Jason Derulo, Jennifer Lopez, and David Guetta are all amazing entertainers that I really love

Favorite genre of music to listen to?
I have different favorites for every activity. I work out to dance/rock music. I love to listen to musicals and Broadway songs. I listen to whoever is on the radio when I drive in the car. I like reggae or anything chill when I’m at the beach.

Can you REALLY sing Opera?
I was trained in a classical style, which is fortunate because it’s the basis of all music. Working with Bret Manning has taught me how to use that style and make my voice have more of a “pop artist” sound.

So you don’t have to be an um “husky” lady to belt out opera?
I think that’s a myth. I know plenty of thin people that have beautiful voices.

I read you were part of an all-girl group, how long were you in Blaze Blah?
A very jam packed year. It was a few other girls and me. It was just another experience that I am able to look back at see that I learned a lot from that time in my life.

What’s the advantage of being out on your own as an artist?
I play well with others but having creative control make the process a lot more fun. I get to wake up and only make songs that I want to make. At the end of the day I own the win or the loss and it’s cool getting to put everything I imagine into action because, believe it or not, it’s hard to get taken seriously as a 22-year-old woman.

Your single is climbing the charts. Do you have plans for a full album or is there one?
I have plans to do a lot of things this year. I don’t know if creating an album will be one of them but I definitely have other songs in the works.

As people can see from your photos and your video, you rock a hardbody. Were you always in shape and into fitness?
Frankly, no. I just got to a point in my life where I wanted to be the best I could be and that’s part of it. Looking at all the amazing fitness models you’ve interviewed makes me want to hit the gym even harder!

The video for your single shows you dancing and rock’n it. What inspired the dance room?
We wanted to show where “Ali Lee” really is in her head. That’s where it is: sweating, working, making mistakes, trying again, and accomplishing a goal in an empty room with some music.

How did you get into dancing?
I quit gymnastics and picked up ballet and I was hooked.

Were you into sports growing up?
Ballet.

Haha.
Don’t laugh because that is a sport. We go hard!

Do you write songs as well?
I co-wrote my next single with my producer Keith Thomas. I also write short narratives and poems for myself.

You’re obviously super busy, what’s the key to staying in the shape you do?
I always find a time or place to work out. If I eat what I want for the day, I make sure to spend that extra time in the gym to make up for it. It’s a lot about balancing your decisions.

What’s a day of eating like for you?
My family and friends make fun of me because I always get so much food and then end up eating only half of it. My eyes are way bigger than my stomach. I eat pretty much what I want and when I want unless I’m working to get in super shape.

Ever carried a gallon jug of water?
Yeah, all the time. It’s the best way to get your water. Plus a gallon jug is heavy.

What type of weight training do you do, or do you hit the weights?
The weights hit me. I do light weights in high reps in a circuit to keep my heart rate up.

Do you take any supplements, if so what’s in your arsenal?
I drink a lot of water. I’ve tried a few different things but at the end of the day water has been the thing that has kept me feeling good and looking healthy. I also take in a lot of protein.

What’s the best advice someone has given you in regards to fitness?
When you feel tired, that’s when your workout starts.

What advice could you tell other women who are struggling to stay in shape or get into shape?
Just go consecutively for two weeks. Make that your initial goal instead of going with the goal of losing five pounds in two weeks. If you do that, you are creating a long-term habit so it’s helpful in the long run.

What question do you find you get asked the most while doing appearances?
“Will you marry me?” I usually say, “No thank you, not this time, but maybe next time.” 🙂

You’re getting married though, right? How important is it to have a supportive partner?
I haven’t tied the knot yet but life is good.

I read you started a couple companies – can you share what those are?
Kyra Fox Records came about after having the fortunate opportunity to work with several small labels, none of which were offering me anything that fit me, in particular. It got to a point where I knew that in order to be happy as an artist I would need to branch out and attempt it as an independent artist. Or die trying. But by no means am I doing it alone, though. I have an amazing team with me.

Any advice you’d give women for building their own brand and image?
Get it, girl! Take yourself seriously at all costs. If you feel it and you work for it, you can achieve what you want. It has nothing to do with anyone else.

Anything you’ve done along the way that you wish you hadn’t or wish someone would have warned you about?
Plenty, I wish people could have warned me about. But I feel like every step I took played into the person I’ve become and the artist I’ve grown into.

You’ve done some modeling as well… Do you enjoy it?
I enjoy anything where I get to do my craft. Anytime I get to do something fun is a good day!

What’s on the horizon for Ali Lee – any new ventures?
A whole lot! We have a lot of things planned. 2012 will be very very busy!

Where can people find more info on you?
My website, ali-lee.com or my fan page, alisarmy.com. They can always ask, if they are my friends on my Real Ali Lee Facebook page or follow me on Twitter @TheRealAliLee! I try to respond to everyone who asks a legitimate question.

Where can they hear more of your music?
“Keep it Right There” is available on iTunes, Amazon, everywhere, and is now on the radio! I’m excited about the next single, which will be out soon.

Thanks for your time Ali and all the best in the future.

2012 Australian Pro Figure Competitors

Ten women are slated to compete in the land down under. We’ll likely see a repeat of the Figure International as Nicole Wilkins faces Erin Stern once again. The show has a good mix of competitors from outside of the United States and it will be interesting to see how they match up against the best in the biz. Some competitors struggle to maintain their conditioning from show to show while others improve. 2012 IFBB Muscle Contest Bikini Results

Ten women entered the 2012 IFBB Muscle Contest Pro and in the end Sonia Gonzales was crowned the winner for the second week in a row. Coming off a win at the Bikini International, Sonia took that momentum back to Cali and collected another first place check. The runner-up spot went to Justine Munro who was battling back from missing the Bikini International. She appeared to be holding a bit of water but the blonde beauty held her own and locked in a solid start to the year. Rounding out the top three was Narmin Assria who continues to pose it out for an Olympia qualification. Only the winners of the show qualifies for the Olympia and since Sonia was already qualified, no one new will make the trip to the big dance in Las Vegas.

2012 Bikini International Results, Review & Opinions

The 2012 Bikini International brought the women’s IFBB pro competitions to a close. When prejudging ended it appeared we’d see a new Bikini International Champion however if you were to conduct an exit poll, few would have correctly predicted this outcome. Heading into this contest no one saw the top spots ending up as they did and if they did I’d like them to pick my lottery numbers. The results left most people scratching their heads. NPCNEWSonline.com has input on this show from head judge Sandy Williamson however after reading her comments you almost get the feeling she didn’t agree with the final results. I spoke with her after prejudging and I know how she saw it didn’t exactly match with the final results. It’s a reminder that the head judge can move competitors around however this a panel of 9-11 judges who cast their votes, and as you can see from the scores there were varied opinions.

If I had a nickel for every text, tweet and email I received asking about the results of this contest I’d have enough money to fill my car up with gas for a month. I’m not a judge and wasn’t on the panel deciding the outcome. I don’t always agree with the results but doesn’t mean any disrespect towards the judges, it’s just my opinion. Pretty much every show has a few placings people don’t agree with, it’s the nature of the competition. Rarely do I completely disagree with the results of a show however this show, I can’t for the life of me figure out how or why the judges went the direction they did. I’m hoping it is just a one time thing and not foreshadowing of things to come. Why? Because looking at the results of this show confuses local judges, fans, trainers and competitors both in the NPC and IFBB. Again, this is just MY OPINION and no disrespect intended towards the judges or competitors.

Sonia Gonzales was arguably the most muscular and conditioned competitor in the show. If I was a judge, and we’ve established I am not, I wouldn’t have her in my top six. Why? Because she had noticeable capped delts and vascularity through her arms that some Figure and Fitness competitors didn’t posses. Sonia’s placings had been on the decline since winning the 2010 Bikini International. She was second at this contest last year, dropped to third at the Europa Super show and finished 5th at the 2011 Bikini Olympia. Most people felt her placings were due to the amount of muscle she carried on her frame, which makes sense given she was a top Figure competitor for years. Sonia has stripped a good deal of muscle off her frame since her Figure days and has gotten more comfortable and confident on stage with her posing. So how did she go from 5th to first? Ya got me, I have no clue.

Sonia edged out India Paulino by one point for the win. India has steadily improved her placings since competing on this stage as an amateur last year. It’s a pretty impressive feat to go from an amateur to runner-up on the pro stage in just a year. She’s always sassy on stage and I swear one of these days she’s going to pop a hip doing her move at the end of her posing. The sass works for her and it wouldn’t for everyone. India in the top five, I could see many of the judges agreeing with this call. Her boobs were a little out of control at this show and it might be because of her small frame.

The returning champ, Nicole Nagrani dropped to third and was two points behind Sonia for the win. What changed here? Good question. I thought Nicole was her usual bubbly self and presented, what I thought, was the same package as last year, where she won the Arnold and the Olympia. When it comes to Nicole, she’s cute and bubbly. Some judges will gravitate to cute while others will lean towards a sexier look. She wins the cute contest every day but sexy not so much. It then becomes a matter of personal preference as to what is rewarded. Why the judges opted to stray away from the cute look this time around, again ya got me. Most of the time you have to knock the champ out to win, I didn’t think she got knocked out but her placings show otherwise.

Jaime Baird was on top of her game. I would have placed Jaime in the top three spots and compared her for the win. She takes the stage with class and presents herself in a way that makes her stand out. She’s got curves and a tight, firm body that many women would aspire to have. This was the best I’ve seen Jaime on stage as an amateur or pro and this includes the shows she’s won. A top contender every time and would have placed her higher.

Nathalia Melo dropped to fifth in what many, myself included, felt was her best showing to date. She was one point away from Jaime and that I can see however it would make more sense if the two of them were battling for first and second and not fourth and fifth. Nathalia always gets critiqued for her lower half being a bit softer than her upper body. That’s an issue many women have and when you’ve got a Brazilian booty like Nat, it’s tough to balance the upper and lower body. I thought she brought a tight booty without being too ripped in her abs, like she had in the past. She would have been in my top three spots and given the nod for the win on my scorecard.

Juliana Daniell has an athletic physique and presents with class. I like the look she brought to this stage and would have liked to see her step her energy up just a bit. She was much improved from her third place showing in December and I would have placed her in the top three at this show. I think she has a physique that many women who played sports could look to as inspiration and point her as someone’s physique they’d like to have. Juliana should be a top contender in every show she enters if she brings a similar physique.

One thing I noticed and not sure if it’s good or bad but many of the competitors all posed exactly the same. I’d like to see the women go back to being themselves and posing with a bit of their own personality. Not every physique looks flattering with their legs crossed from behind and not every competitor is going to be sassy. I’d like to see the women pose in a way that is classy but less rigid and rehearsed. Jaime Baird and Nathalia do a great job of posing and I think are the two stars of the division in that regards.

None of the women embarrassed themselves and over all they all looked good. There were a number of confused and upset competitors after this show and for some it comes with good reason. Others I’d say, be happy you received the invite as there are many other competitors who would love to be in your heels. What’s ahead for the bikini division? We’ll have to wait and see but I’d like to see more consistency in what is rewarded throughout the year, which isn’t always easy due to different judges and who shows up on stage at any given show.

Wilkins Wins Figure International Title

Nicole Wilkins has been on a winning streak since and she kept it alive in Columbus. Nicole won the Figure International for a third time and is one of the top Figure Pros of all-tie. The Michigan girl’s win wasn’t without a bit of controversy but it wouldn’t be a physique competition if there weren’t a few disagreements when it comes to the placings.

As I told head judge Sandy Williamson, I’m glad I wasn’t a judge for this show. We often compare notes after shows and most of the time we agree. Since she judges hundreds, if not thousands of competitors, and I photograph them we usually notice similar things. When we compared notes on this show, we both struggled over the same things when it came to the leading contenders.

Nicole was clearly not at her best and you could see a bit of it on her face when she took the stage at prejudging. Keep in mind when we’re talking about all of these competitors it’s essentially like splitting hairs. An “off day” for Nicole is better than an “on day” for most. She appeared to hold a bit of water and not the physique we’d seen on this stage a year ago. That said, she still has tremendous shape and symmetry. All things considered her “off” wasn’t THAT bad. People often say if you want to beat the champ you have to knock them out, well if you apply that to Figure competitions no one delivered the knock out punch in this line up.

Erin Stern brought a different look to the stage this year and it came with mixed opinions. She was noticeably smaller in size and had shaved off a good deal of muscle. Had she brought the physique she had last year I think she would have won. Instead the judges were left wondering where to place her. She still has great lines and was confident on stage but I think subconsciously the judges compared her to her old physique, like many in the press pit did. Whether fair or not, we’re all human and that comparison was made. Some liked it and others didn’t. I wasn’t crazy about her suit bottom from the back, the cut was a bit too low or perhaps just not enough fabric. Still a second place showing is nothing to sneeze at and it will once again set up the rivalry between her and Nicole.

Candice Keene stepped up her game and brought her best look to the stage. The problem was she looked too muscular and a bit too hard when standing next to the others in the call-outs. So what do you do? Do you place her first and everyone else gets compared to that or do you mark her down for being too muscular? That’s what the judges had to decide and in the end they settle in the middle and she finished in third.

Ava Cowan definitely has an Arnold to remember. She had issues with her flight coming out and if you check out her Gaspari Blog you can read all about it. When she took the stage at prejudging she nearly fell right out of the gate however she recovered and rocked the stage. Ava wasn’t at her best but she was close which then puts her in the same discussion as the other women and where does she finish. The judges compared her a couple of different times and they settled on 4th place and just one spot behind Candice.

The surprise to the show for many was Heather Dees in 5th place. Heather shaved off some muscle after continually placing lower and lower last year. The time off helped her and she brought a different look to the stage this time. The judges took notice and rewarded her for it.

Rounding out the top six was Teresa Anthony who looked beautiful but wasn’t quite as full as she’s capable of and her muscle didn’t “pop” like we’ve seen in the past. I would have placed her a bit higher but we never really saw her next to the top 4 so it’s tough to know. I thought she looked balance and those who critique her legs should find something new to speak about.

It will be interesting to see how some of the women in this show look when they compete at the Australian Pro in two weeks. Since all three women were already qualified no Olympia qualifications were awarded at this show. Congratulations to all the women who competed. Adela Wins Fifth Fitness International Title

Adela Garcia took home her second title of 2012 and her fifth Fitness International title in her career. Adela was the odds on favorite to leave Columbus with the title and she delivered. The more surprising story line of this year’s events were the placings of the others in the top spots. There were more than a few surprises when the results were read off on Friday night at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium.

It was pretty clear that Adela was the winner of the physique round as she typically has been in the past five years. She was noticeably improved from her showing at the FLEX PRO two weeks prior to this event. The physique scores only make up 1/3 of the overall score. The remaining 2/3 is based on the two-minute fitness routines, and this is where people have varied opinions. Adela is one of the most consistent competitors you will see take the stage. She always throws in a little latin flare and you can count seeing a number of strength moves from start to finish. The judges reward her for her strength moves and for keeping the pace from beginning to end. Some people feel there were better routines. Some people like crunchy peanut butter and others like creamy. What’s your flavor may not be mine. Adela has found a flavor that the judges enjoy.

One of the biggest surprises in this show was Denver, Colorado resident Camala Rodriquez. Camala was much more confident and comfortable on stage than she was two weeks prior at the FLEX Pro. She was in significantly better condition and it may have helped her confidence on stage. She deserved the call-outs she received in the physique round. Camala did a solid job with her routine however I’m not sure everyone agreed that it was a second place performance. The judges awarded her a score of 26 which was 16 behind Adela and six ahead of third place finisher, Oksana Grishina.

While most would agree with Oksana having a 3-5 placing physique many feel she had one of, if not thee best routine of the night. Oksana’s posing still needs some work in the physique round however she shows insane flexibility and strength in her routines. I’m not exactly sure what she was doing at the end of her routine but there were many parts of the routine that were unmatched. Definitely deserved a top three finish at this show and is now qualified for the 2012 Olympia.

Bethany Cisternino was in a solid third place after the physique round. She wasn’t quite as full as she was two weeks prior, at least in my opinion, but her she has great structure and a pleasing physique. Bethany did a better routine than she had at the FLEX PRO and was awarded accordingly. I definitely had Bethany in the top five and she did a great job.

Tanji Johnson has been living in Adela’s shadow over the years, at least on stage. This year Tanji hasn’t quite been able to put it together and has been out of the top three both at the FLEX PRO and here. She was definitely in better condition at this show than she was at the FLEX PRO and her routine was better as well. She could have been a bit tighter in the physique rounds and we didn’t see quite enough strength moves in her routine. At the end of the night, Tanji finished in the fifth place position.

Myriam Capes rounded out the top spots and finished in sixth. She wasn’t at her best in the physique round and she was playing catch up heading into the routine round. The judges placed her routine as their sixth favorite. I thought her routine was one of the top three in the show. She performed a number of difficult moves and the bull fighting theme was fitting for her personality. Myriam will have to take the bull by the horns and bring back a tighter physique to finish higher.

Overall the routines were good. There were a couple that needed to be scrapped and brought way up, much like a few of the physiques. Congratulations to all the women  competing in this prestigious event. Check out all the photos from this and other events at the Arnold Sports Festival on Bodybuilding.com.

Yaxeni Oriquen Garcia Captures Bodybuilding Crown in Columbus

Floridian, Yaxeni Oriquen Garcia beat out thirteen of the world’s best female bodybuilders to capture the Ms. International title for a fifth time. The win earned her a chat with Arnold Schwarzenegger, a beautiful trophy, $25,000 and a Tony Nowak jacket. of Miami, Florida is a five-time winner of the Ms. International bodybuilding competition at the Arnold Sports Festival 2012.

The decision was clear in the judges’ minds as Yaxeni received a perfect score. She was a bit smaller in size than we’ve seen her in years past but she was every bit as conditioned. Yaxeni’s overall structure and shape helped carry her to a win over a very competitive Debi Laszewski. Debi packed a bit more muscle on her frame than Yaxeni however her look didn’t quite match up. Debi also sported an interesting choice in make up with bright red lipstick. The judges overlooked the distracting makeup and awarded the runner-up position. The second place finish earned her $13,000 for her efforts.

Third place finisher, Alina Popa showed an aesthetically pleasing physique but wasn’t quite as muscular as Yaxeni nor as sharp as Debi. She recently started training in the high altitude of Denver, Colorado but is originally from Switzerland. Alina took home $8,000 and an Olympia qualification. She’s the only one from the show to do so since Yaxeni and Debi were already qualified. A recent rule change allows for the top three finishers a chance to compete at the Olympia.

Cathy LeFrancois was holding a bit of water in her lower body during prejudging and it cost her heading into the finals. She improved at the finals and actually tied Alina however it wasn’t enough to over take her. Cathy finished in the fourth place position and received $5,000.

Rounding out the prize winning spots were Kim Buck in fifth and Brigita Brezovac of Maribor, Slovenia in sixth. Brigita was ahead of Kim by two points heading into the finals however she finished four points behind her. Brigita appeared to fade at bit at the night show and Kim improved which was reflective in their scores.

There were a number of bad wigs, poor tans and even worse posing. While hitting transitions many of the competitors needed to control their breathing better. You may see some of this reflective in the photos from the show. Overall it was a competitive show and Yaxeni proved that she still has some gas in the tank.

Julie Palmer Interview – Momma’s Back!

Julie Palmer sat out the 2011 season after giving birth to her first child. She’s back on stage at the Fitness International for the ninth time. The Ohio momma is back and ready to take the stage with a renewed and refreshed physique. I caught up with Julie on the eve of her return.

Q: Congratulations on the new addition. How’s the baby doing?
A: Thank you. Jaxson is great. He just turned 13 months old. He is a great baby. He loves music and dancing. He is looking forward to his 2nd Arnold weekend.

Q: How many time have you competed at the Arnold?
A: This is Arnold number 9.

Q: Was it tough sitting out last year and not competing in the Arnold or a welcomed break?
A: It wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be until the last week or so. I was a bit distracted in a good way with both the baby and planning my wedding for the following month. It was nice to be able to come to the show and watch from the other side though.

Q: You were considering a comeback but held off. Are you glad you’re returning at this stage?
A: Yes, I was going to return in the fall of last year but I decided I wanted to nurse for a full year. I was also recovering from an injury and I wanted to make sure I was 100% before I stepped back onto the stage.

Q: What’s the toughest part of prepping for a show withe a young’n at home?
A: The toughest part has been time. I have 2 older stepsons who are 16 and 12 and are able to come and go and do some things on their own and they are in school when I am training but with Jaxson he controls the schedule a little bit more. It has been a challenge at times but it has worked. Luckily he is a great baby and goes everywhere with me. He goes to the gym, the gymnastics center and even posing practice at times. There are nights I get to bed later than I would want because I don’t have time during the day to get the things done that need to be done.

Q: What’s been the biggest change in your life since becoming a mom?
A: My biggest change is that my number one priority is my little guy. Everyone told me my world would change and that you never know a love till you have a child of your own and they are right.

Q: What advice do you have for other mom’s out there who are struggling to stay fit?
A: My advice would be don’t forget to take time for yourself and remember your goals. If you are not happy then your child and your family will not be happy. You can always go outside and walk or run with a jogging stroller or join a gym that has child care so that while you are working out your child is having fun playing.

Q: The last time I saw you, you looked the healthiest I have ever seen you. Do you think the time away from the stage has helped give your body a rest?
A: Thank you, I appreciate hearing that. I do think the time away has helped me. I competed non-stop prior to getting pregnant and trained non stop for the next show. I would argue with Mike about taking time off. When I got pregnant, I didn’t stop training, I just had to back off the intensity. I had to eat some different foods. I never realized just how beat up I was until I had the time off and I realized how different my body felt.

Q: Did your nutrition change while you were pregnant? If so what changed?
A: My nutrition changed more so by incorporating more fruits and more calcium into my diet. I still ate every 2-3hours. I also had to back down the amount of fish that I ate weekly.

Q: Now that you’re back in competition mode – what’s your goal for this weekend?
A: My goal is to have fun and enjoy the moment. I had a baby a year ago and I am back up on stage. I want other moms to realize that if you stay healthy and fit during your pregnancy you can back to your pre-pregnancy body within months, not years like you hear from so many moms. I had a different mind set going into the show and it was more about me overcoming my own personal struggles between over-training and being injured. I am very happy that my physique is back and my routine is a lot of fun. I hope that I am still able to be a top 3 competitor 2 years later.

Q: Any supplements you’d recommend for moms?
A: I would recommend a very good multivitamin and mineral as well as fish oil and vitamin E. That is all I took. I came off thermogenics for the first time in 14 years the day I found out I was pregnant and have not been back on them yet.

Q: Where can people find more info on you and stay updated with what you and the Fitness Factory are up to?

A: You can find us on our new updated site at www.mikedaviesfitness.com as well as MikeDaviesFitness on twitter and facebook.

Good luck this weekend Julie and welcome back! The IFBB Fitness prejudging will take place at noon on Friday, March 2, 2012 followed by the finals later that evening. Check out competition photos and Julie’s contest history.
