2012 IFBB Pro Governor’s Cup Review & Results

The inaugural California’s Governor’s Cup is in the books and three IFBB Pros left Sacramento with their first victories. Karin Kimura from Boise, Idaho edged out Denver’s Sara Hurrle by two points in her Women’s Physique debut. Heather Dees notched her first IFBB victory nearly exactly two years after her overall win at the NPC Utah Classic. Arizona’s Matt Cristianer made history by becoming the first IFBB Men’s Physique winner.

2012 IFBB GOVERNOR’S CUP – The HARDBODY 411:
Sacramento, California March 24, 2012

WOMEN’S PHYSIQUE (#WPD)
There’s a bit of confusion around the final placings. The first two pro women’s physique shows did not see a change from prejudging scores however at this show the top five were re-judged at the night show. The evening scores favored Karin and in the end launched her over Sara Hurrle by two points. Karin was the 2011 Overall NPC Nationals winner and she kept her WPD winning streak alive. She carries a bit more muscle than last week’s WPD Pro winner, Sara Hurrle. Hurrle was told by the judges that she was softer in the evening and that’s why she finished out of the winner circle this time. Susan Salazar brought and improved look fro her Phoenix outing and it positioned her in third place. Marina Lopez continues to be a contender in the top five and if she can shed a bit more muscle she’ll move up. Akane Nigro-Ismeal rounded out the top five in her WPD debut.

FIGURE
Heather Dees took home top honors for the first time in the pro ranks and in the process qualified for a return trip to the Olympia. She’s brought her waistline down from last year and continues to refine the look she brings to the stage. Krissy Chin finished in the runner-up position and is still looking for her first pro title. Allison Frahn edged out Jami DeBenard by one point to take the third place spot. A bit of a sleeper pick heading into this show, Carin Hawkins rounded out the top five. This was one of the largest line-ups we’ve seen in 2012 and should be more in line with the numbers for each event. The next stop on the Figure circuit is the Europa Orlando on April 27-28th.

MEN PHYSIQUE
Matt Cristianer continued to make history in the new men’s division with his victory here. He was the overall winner at the 2011 NPC JR USAs and had the winning look for the first pro event. Heading into the show, I felt Matt was “the look” and the judges agreed. Matt has a great genetics and a clean, marketable look. He beat out a field of 10 and if the judging continues down this path I think it will be an appealing division for more men who don’t want to carry the size of a bodybuilder but obviously work out.
