IFBB Greater Gulf States Review & Results

Another IFBB show is in the books and two new champions were crowned. Tamee Marie in Women’s Physique and Brittany Tacy in Bikini were the two champs at the end of the night. The win earned Tacy a trip to the 2012 Bikini Olympia and Tamee Marie bragging rights.

The Bikini division was competitive despite no odds on favorite heading into the show. Brittany ultimately prevailed with an athletic physique and polished, without being over the top, presentation. The Floridian has steadily improved her placings since turning pro at the 2011 NPC USAs. If she continues to build her booty and works on being comfortable on stage she’ll be a top 10 contender at the Olympia this Fall. Stacey Alexander and Justine Munro tied for second but Justine won the tie breaker. Stacey had the more balanced physique and not many would have argued if she had finished in first or second. Justine has built one of the best booties in the biz but still finding her way with balancing her lower and upper body conditioning. Dayna Maleton landed in fourth and had one of the more muscular physiques in the show. She’s refined her presentation and finally seems at ease on stage. Narmin Assria secured the fifth place position, despite being the tiniest competitor on stage. She continues to add some muscle and fill out her frame. The normally poised and confident Assria, seemed a bit nervous with her prejudging posing. Jennifer Chapman slipped a bit in her placings however not many would have disagreed if she’d finished in the top spots. She brought one of her best looks to date and polished her posing. Summer White made her pro debut but it wasn’t her best showing. She’ll need to fill out her frame and not come in so lean if she hopes to make a name for herself in the pro ranks. A seventh place finish was a bit higher than expected and one she has to be thrilled with. Christie Marquez was probably the most poised and relaxed on stage and her 11th place finish wasn’t reflective of the presentation she brought to the stage. She definitely could have been higher and no one would argue with it.

The Women’s Physique competition wasn’t the best we’ve seen however there was a clear message sent. The judges are continuing to reward a physique with better shape/symmetry and not overly muscular. Tamee Marie competed in Figure as an amateur before switching to fitness where she ultimately turned pro. She looked far better in the morning than the night show and that earned her the top spot. Those in attendance had her any where from first to fourth. Karin Kimura entered her second pro show and finished in the runner-up position. Karin had a bit more muscle on her legs than some of the others but possessed great shape. If she can pose on her toes and less flat footed it could help with her presentation and elongating her legs. Jennifer Robinson finished in the third place position and many in attendance had her winning the show. She had the best shape in the show however a little more muscle and less separation than others. No one would have disputed her name being announced in the first place spot. Joele Smith has one of the best physiques in the division however she has a bit more muscle and not enough separation to move up for the judges. She’s one to watch at future shows. Gina Trochiano made her debut in the division and if she can bring a tighter backside she’ll move up at the Chicago show next week.

One thing that needs to be refined with Women’s Physique is the posing in the individual, prejudging rounds. Many of the women free pose and failed to hit the various mandatory poses. That’s what the finals are for to do the free-form posing. Would love to see the prejudging become just hitting the mandatory poses and keep the free form posing out of that round. It would give the judges an opportunity to see the physiques better.

Thanks to the promoters, Luke and Robyn for the hospitality and putting on a great show. The NPC portion had over 250 competitors and the night show was a sell-out. There were times when it was standing room only. This is definitely one show to put on your schedule to attend or compete in for 2013. It will be held on the same weekend next year.
