“Live life balls to the wall. Do epic shit. Take every dare that comes your way. You can sleep when you’re dead”. This is the personal motto of Cindy Whitehead.

She conquered the male dominated profession of pro vert skateboarding in the 70’s, and quickly became one of the top ranked professional female vert skateboarders in the U.S. for pool riding and half-pipe. To this day, Cindy still holds the distinction of being the only female to be featured in the centerfold plus a two-page article in a skateboarding magazine, and is the only female skateboarder to have been sponsored by Puma.

Since then, Cindy has gone on to coin the term “Sports Stylist®,” working as a fashion stylist specializing in sports, with companies like Gatorade, Nike, the NBA,and athletes such as Tiger Woods, Kobe Bryant and Mia Hamm.

Last year she made national headlines by skateboarding down the closed 405 freeway in Los Angeles. In June of 2013 Cindy flew to Washington, DC to sign over some of her skateboard history to The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History’s sports collections.

Cindy has been profiled in magazines and sites such as, ESPN, The Huffington Post, & Women’s Wear Daily, and has appeared on numerous TV and radio shows. She most recently spoke in Washington, DC at The Smithsonian Museum’s Innoskate event.

Her catchphrase “Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word” has become a battle cry for girls worldwide.

Free Concerts at 2014 GoPro Mountain Games

March 24, 2014 (Vail, Colo.) — The Vail Valley Foundation, organizer of the annual GoPro Mountain Games, is pleased to announce the preliminary music line-up for this year’s event. In its thirteenth year, the GoPro Mountain Games has grown to be considered the country’s largest celebration of adventure sports, music and the mountain lifestyle. The event is scheduled for June 5-8, 2014 featuring three nights of free concerts from the heart of Vail Village, alongside more than 3,000 athletes competing across 25 sports for prize money exceeding $110,000.

vail mountain games

The free Bud Light Mountains of Music outdoor concert series kicks off on Thursday, June 5 with Australian singer/songwriter Xavier Rudd. Indie rock bands, Tokyo Police Club and Cold War Kids, perform Friday, June 6 and Saturday, June 7, respectively.

“Free music has always been a big component of the GoPro Mountain Games and this year we’re excited to present our best concert line-up ever,” says Mike Imhof, Senior Vice President of Sales & Operations at the Vail Valley Foundation. “The Cold War Kids and Tokyo Police Club put on great shows and this will be their first time playing Vail. Xavier Rudd has proven to be one of our most popular acts and we’re happy to welcome him back for the Thursday night concert.”

“We are thrilled to elevate the overall concert activation and artist experience at the upcoming GoPro Mountain Games, “said Justin Wilkenfeld, GoPro’s Director of Lifestyle Marketing. “It is a natural progression to combine our passion for adventure with our love for music. Vail offers a beautiful backdrop to capture the on-mountain excitement, as well as epic music moments on stage and behind the scenes of this weekend-long festival.”

As lead sponsor of the Mountain Games, GoPro will outfit athletes and music headliners with cameras to capture unique POV footage of all aspects of the festival experience. GoPro, best known for its ties to the action and adventure sports communities, has recently expanded its presence in music with the launch of the HERO3+ Black Edition/Music, which includes specially designed mounts and accessories to capture professional quality photos and video of any musical moment. Musicians including Tokyo Police Club, Cold War Kids and Xavier Rudd can easily mount the camera to instruments, microphone stands, turntables and other stage equipment to capture immersive GoPro style footage of any performance, including those at the GoPro Mountain Games.

Xavier Rudd, who performed at the 2011 Mountain Games, returns to Vail with his multi-instrumental act on Thursday, June 5, following the Bud Light Lime Steep Creek Kayak Championships on class V Homestake Creek. Rudd is a favorite on the Colorado mountain music scene, playing a high-energy show that features didgeridoos, drums, banjos, harmonicas and guitars.

The Canadian indie rock band Tokyo Police Club was formed in 2005 and are scheduled to release their third record, Forcefield, later this month. The quirky, high-energy rockers’ new album includes the tracks “Argentina (Parts I, II and II),” “Hot Tonight” and “Toy Guns” showcasing climactic drum builds, thundering bass lines and driving guitar riffs. Tokyo Police Club is slated to perform on Friday, June 6 following the GoPro Mountain Game’s marquee GoPro Slopestyle competition.

Formed in 2004, the Cold War Kids released their breakthrough album Robbers & Cowards to considerable acclaim in 2006. The Long Beach, California-based band released its fourth studio album, Dear Miss Lonelyhearts, last year and has been on an aggressive touring schedule ever since, playing some of the country’s biggest music festivals. With dramatic vocals from lead singer Nathan Willet and plenty of drum heavy, foot-stomping instrumentals, the Cold War Kids free street concert in Vail is sure to be a crowd pleaser Saturday night, immediately following the IFSC Bouldering World Cup finals, the only World Cup bouldering event in the United States.

Registration for the 2014 GoPro Mountain Games is available at www.gopromountaingames.com. Spectating at the GoPro Mountain Games, and all concerts are free and open to the public.

Janet Layug Wins 2014 IFBB Battle on The Beach Pro Bikini Results

The 2014 IFBB Battle on the Beach played out as most thought it would at least for the most part. Janet Layug, competing in just her second pro show, took home top honors and a ticket to the Bikini Olympia contest. Janet took top honors at the 2013 NPC Nationals and quickly became a fan favorite. She finished 8th in her pro debut earlier this month but she faced the best in the division at the Bikini International.

Janet Layug

Look for Janet to be in the hunt for the top spot again in a couple weeks when she competes at the Orlando Europa. She’s one of the taller competitors and can hold her own at the Olympia if she continues to fill out her frame. Coming in second was Stephanie Mahoe and in doing so collected more points towards the Olympia Series. Angeles Burke was third and Callie Bundy finished 4th in her pro debut. Rounding out the top five was Jessica Renee. Surprisingly not at her best was Michelle Lewin who had beaten Janet last year when the two were amateurs but missed the top 5 this time around.

Just four women entered the Pro Masters Bikini and Amira Lamb left with the win. Janet Lynn West was second, Nathalie Mur third and in fourth was Michon Leddy.

SHOCKER in Sacramento – 2014 IFBB Governor’s Cup Pro Figure Results

The women of the IFBB Pro Figure division were back on stage in Sacramento, CA. The 2014 Governor’s Cup had 27 women in the show but only one would punch their ticket to the Olympia stage. The odds-on favorite heading into the show was Vegas resident Mallory Haldeman. Haldeman, at least on paper, was the one to beat having finished fifth at the 2013 Olympia and before that had two back-to-back wins. When the top five placings were announced many were shocked.

sacramento results

Jessica Graham was crowned your 2014 Governor’s Cup Pro Figure winner. Who is Jessica Graham? Great question.

This was Jessica’s IFBB Pro debut and flew under the radar to most, myself included. She put together an impressive amateur resume over the years before turning pro last summer. Graham turned pro at the 2013 NPC USAs last July by winning the C height class. She was the 2012 NPC Contra Costa Champion and took first at the 2009 NPC Sacramento. The win qualifies her for the 2014 Olympia in Las Vegas. Congrats to Jessica on doing what few have done… win their IFBB Pro debut.

Rounding out the top five were Allison Frahn, Krista Dunn, Monica Labriola and Linda Andrews. Each of these women earn points in the Olympia Qualification Series. Krista went on to win her first pro show in the 2014 IFBB Governor’s Cup Masters Pro Figure. While there is no Master’s Olympia Figure event, she does pick up some prize money and bragging rights.

Haldeman not cracking the top five was shocking but also surprising was last year’s runner-up Wendy Fortino finishing 15th this time around. It’s a reminder you never know what can happen on any given show.

SELF Magazine Inadvertently Snubs Cancer Runner’s Tutu

Oops. SELF magazine started quite the sh*t storm this week and it stems from their newest issue. Monika Allen received a phone call from SELF asking her permission to use a photo of her running in a tutu. She’s smiling and dressed as Wonder Woman in the photo. No biggie, right? Pretty sweet to have a magazine want to run a photo of you. Well by itself it’s a cute photo and a fun opportunity to be in a major fitness magazine but when you put it into the context which it was used… well that’s where things get ugly.

tutu runner
The photo runs in the magazine’s “+BS METER” which states the page is “Our SELF-y guide to what’s legit and what’s lame this month”.

NEW RUNNING TULLE
“A racing tutu epidemic has struck NYC’s Central Park, and it’s all because people think these froufrou skirts make you run faster. Now, if you told us they made people run away from you faster, maybe we would believe it.”

After seeing how her photo was used, Monika was understandably upset. She told a San Diego news station she wore the outfit during the marathon because it gave her motivation and came in the middle of chemotherapy. Yes, Monica is a cancer survivor and part of GLAM RUNNER. Glam Runner was founded in 2011 as a way to “bring more fun and GLAM to running while raising money for Girls on the Run of San Diego.”

Their website’s about us says, “Girls on the Run is a life-changing 12 week program for girls 8-13 years old that encourages positive emotional, social, mental, and physical development, all while training the girls for a 5K race.”

After this news went viral SELF POSTED this on their Facebook page.

The messages of support for Allen on the Glam Runner Facebook page continue to pour in. The Glam Runner Facebook posted their response.

The folks on twitter haven’t been as forgiving and kind…

2014 IFBB Governors Cup Competitor List & Preview

The 2014 IFBB Governors Cup will showcase an open and master’s pro figure competition. The event will be held in Sacramento, California on March 28-29 in conjunction with a NPC event. There are currently 27 women slated to compete in the open pro figure with one Olympia qualification up for grabs. The Master’s figure has nearly 20 women entered despite there being no Olympia qualification for the win.

2014 Governors cup

THE HARDBODY 411
The odds on favorite has to be Mallory Haldeman for the win. Mallory opted out of competing in the Figure International earlier this month and this will be her first time on stage this year. She’s a top six Olympia competitor and the one to beat. If she’s brought her back up a bit and can remain calm while posing she’ll be your winner. Mallory tends to shake and look nervous while on stage but has continued to improve with each show. Look for local California girl, Wendy Fortino to be compared for the win as well. Wendy brought a great look to this stage last year and should compare well to Mallory. The two squared off last year but Heather Dees took top honors. Heather will not be competing this year so look for the two of them to be the ones to beat.

Allison Frahn will likely find herself in the top callout but won’t have quiet the same amount of muscle in her lower body as Mallory and Wendy. Julie Mayer, Monica Labriola and Patty Zariello could also be contenders for the top callout. Krista Dunn will look to get back in the mix and had a great season in 2013. There are a number of women who could shake things up for the top five but Mallory Haldeman will have to be way off her game to lose this show.

The Master’s Figure competition will be a competitive group. Master’s Figure has proven far more popular than Master’s bikini. Many of the women in this line-up can and do hold their own in open events.

2014 IFBB Battle on The Beach Competitor Lists & Preview

The second annual IFBB Battle on the Beach is a women’s only event held in Daytona Beach, Florida. The IFBB portion of the event will feature bikini and master’s bikini. The amateur portion will showcase fitness, figure, bikini and physique. There are 15 women slated to compete in the pro bikini and just four in the master’s bikini competition.

battle on the beach

THE HARDBODY 411:
The match-up to watch has to be between Michelle Lewin and Janet Layug. Last year, the two women squared off as amateurs in the NPC Florida Cup. They both won their height class and Michelle went on to win the overall title at that show. Michelle successfully petitioned her country of Venezuela for her pro card after the win. Janet went on to win the overall title at the NPC Nationals and made her pro debut at the Bikini International earlier this month. Michelle has more muscle on her frame than most of the other women in this show but she carries it well and it’s not over the top. If her legs are a bit smaller than last year she could win this show. Janet will be one of the tallest women in the group. She’ll need to come in with a fuller look than we saw at the Arnold. I look for it to be a rematch between the two of them for the win but this time an Olympia qualification is on the line.

Gigi Amurao will likely be in the first callout and if her legs are down in size she’ll be in the hunt for a top spot. Jessica Renee has a good look and if she can nail the little details with her hair and makeup she could be in that first callout. Look for Stephanie Mahoe to also make a run for the top three if she too has the little details right specifically with her tanning. Making her pro debut, Callie Bundy will be one to watch as a top five contender. Don’t sleep on the blonde beauty, Noemi Olah. She relocated to Florida last year and will be a contender here.

The master’s bikini division has yet to pick up momentum in the pro ranks. There’s no Olympia qualification on the line but it does give the women another opportunity to compete. This will be the third Master’s pro bikini competition of the year and the previous two
shows only had one competitor.

Kylie Minogue’s New Music Video – Sexercize

Kylie Minogue is back with a hardbody and a workout err new music video. We’re not quite sure how comfortable it would be to wear these outfits working out but hey that’s not really the point. The video lives up to the song’s namesake but is it sexy or raunchy?

Kylie Minogue – Sexercize Lyrics
Flexin’, we’re uptight
Keep on moving too nice
Move it for me tonight

It’s not just your body
Gotta keep it up with me
My mind is seven sea
Let me see you sexercize
I wanna see you beat all your best times

Let’s just turn you blind

Let me see you sexercize

I’m burning, push in me
Let me see you sexercize
I’ll make you wait for more
Make you beat to the core
Tomorrow you’ll be sore
Let me see you sexercize

I wanna see you beat all your best times
And if you’re lucky I’mma teach you
Let’s just turn you blind

First Female Little Person Competes in NPC Figure

You’ve probably met someone who says the’d like to compete in a show but how many of them have followed through with it? It takes dedication to compete. Just ask Arizona resident Amanda Loy. Amanda took the stage over the weekend in her first NPC Figure competition but she’s not your average competitor. The 22-year old nursing student was born with hypochondroplasia, a form of short-limbed dwarfism. At four feet tall and weighing just 72 pounds she became the smallest woman to ever compete in the NPC.

npc figure little person

The upbeat and positive competitor explained her condition to KPHO CBS 5 as “pretty much like an average height body, shrunk down into a smaller package.” Amanda finished fourth at the NPC Natural Western USA Figure competition and we’re told was a fan favorite at the show. Check out her story in the video below.

Thank you Amanda for reminding us all that “if you want to be fit and be the best you can be, it just takes dedication.”

Top Fitness Pro Tanji Johnson Switches to Women’s Physique

Top IFBB Fitness Pro Tanji Johnson announced that she would will be switching divisions. Now before you get your workout shorts in a bunch, hold on. She’s not leaving the Fitness division for good. The Washington native is taking advantage of the wildly popular Emerald Cup adding a pro show this year. Tanji shared the news on her Facebook page.

tanji johnson

Excited and happy to announce that I will be making my Debut in Women’s physique in the Pro Division at the 2014 Emerald Cup on 26 April. I am NOT retiring from Fitness, I just want to represent the NW as we bring back a Pro show to the northwest (which has been since 2005). This is also going to be a tribute for me to celebrate the heart of our sport…Bodybuilding! I love weight training and being fit for life and going to have a blast flexing and smiling and influencing others towards a life of health and fitness! Thank u in advance for ur love, support and encouragement!

What happens if she qualifies for the Olympia in Women’s Physique, will she choose WPD over Fitness? I asked her this in a brief interview and she assured me, “I will definately be doing Fitness at the Olympia.” The 2013 Fitness International Champ shared that her training for this competition will be different. She said, “I will be training more like a bodybuilder, heavier weights and less athletic performance training.” It will be interesting to see what her physique looks like compared to this year’s Fitness International. When it comes to the diet Tanji said she it will be stricter and will implement more cardio to complement the change in training. She went on to say, “My plan is to come in my best condition ever (glutes & back) and then bring THAT package to the Olympia with a physique that I’ve never shown on a fitness stage.”

tanji previewTanji making her announcement online.

Along with training for next month’s Emerald Cup she is helping train over 50 competitors who will be in the NPC portion of the show. You can keep up with Tanji on Facebook, twitter and tanjijohnson.com.

‘Too Fit’ – Reverse Discrimination at Planet Fitness

How far will Planet Fitness take their ridiculousness? The gym chain with over 5 million members claims to have a “Judgement Free Zone” but that apparently only applies if you’re an out of shape member. Recently, a California woman was told she was intimidating people with her toned body and was told to put on a tshirt. Let’s be clear, she wasn’t in a scantily clad outfit. No, Tiffany Austin was wearing a pink tank-top that showed her midsection and a pari of capri pants.

planet fitness

Tiffany joined Planet Fitness to get back into shape after a car accident. She hit the gym for her workout on the treadmill but it was cut short when she was told she was violating the dress code. Tiffany was asked to put on a tshirt and she agreed. While waiting for the “approved” apparel she was approached by another employee who took issue with how she looked. It was then that she had enough and left but not without getting her money back and canceling her membership.

Austin said, “Really I felt like intimidated and harassed by the place that says ‘No intimidation.’” She goes on to say with a laugh, “I don’t feel like it’s anything crazy, but I mean you tell me if it’s burning your eyes.”

The “Judgement Free Zone” policy claims to ban “gymtimidation” but it appears the staff doesn’t have to follow the same rules its members do. Shame on Planet Fitness for shaming Tiffany Austin and other members like her.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today proposed to update the Nutrition Facts label for packaged foods to reflect the latest scientific information, including the link between diet and chronic diseases such as obesity and heart disease. The proposed label also would replace out-of-date serving sizes to better align with how much people really eat, and it would feature a fresh design to highlight key parts of the label such as calories and serving sizes.

nutrition facts

“Our guiding principle here is very simple: that you as a parent and a consumer should be able to walk into your local grocery store, pick up an item off the shelf, and be able to tell whether it’s good for your family,” said First Lady Michelle Obama. “So this is a big deal, and it’s going to make a big difference for families all across this country.”

“For 20 years consumers have come to rely on the iconic nutrition label to help them make healthier food choices,” said FDA Commissioner Margaret A. Hamburg, M.D. “To remain relevant, the FDA’s newly proposed Nutrition Facts label incorporates the latest in nutrition science as more has been learned about the connection between what we eat and the development of serious chronic diseases impacting millions of Americans.”

Some of the changes to the label the FDA proposed today would:

Require information about the amount of “added sugars” in a food product. The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans states that intake of added sugar is too high in the U.S. population and should be reduced. The FDA proposes to include “added sugars” on the label to help consumers know how much sugar has been added to the product.

Update serving size requirements to reflect the amounts people currently eat. What and how much people eat and drink has changed since the serving sizes were first put in place in 1994. By law, serving sizes must be based on what people actually eat, not on what people “should” be eating. Present calorie and nutrition information for the whole package of certain food products that could be consumed in one sitting.

Present “dual column” labels to indicate both “per serving” and “per package” calorie and nutrition information for larger packages that could be consumed in one sitting or multiple sittings.

Require the declaration of potassium and vitamin D, nutrients that some in the U.S. population are not getting enough of, which puts them at higher risk for chronic disease. Vitamin D is important for its role in bone health. Potassium is beneficial in lowering blood pressure. Vitamins A and C would no longer be required on the label, though manufacturers could declare them voluntarily.

Revise the Daily Values for a variety of nutrients such as sodium, dietary fiber and Vitamin D. Daily Values are used to calculate the Percent Daily Value on the label, which helps consumers understand the nutrition information in the context of a total daily diet.

While continuing to require “Total Fat,” “Saturated Fat,” and “Trans Fat” on the label, “Calories from Fat” would be removed because research shows the type of fat is more important than the amount.

Refresh the format to emphasize certain elements, such as calories, serving sizes and Percent Daily Value, which are important in addressing current public health problems like obesity and heart disease.

labels

The proposed updates reflect new dietary recommendations, consensus reports, and national survey data, such as the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, nutrient intake recommendations from the Institute of Medicine, and intake data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The FDA also considered extensive input and comments from a wide range of stakeholders.

“By revamping the Nutrition Facts label, FDA wants to make it easier than ever for consumers to make better informed food choices that will support a healthy diet.” said Michael R. Taylor, the FDA’s deputy commissioner for foods and veterinary medicine. “To help address obesity, one of the most important public health problems facing our country, the proposed label would drive attention to calories and serving sizes.”

The Nutrition Facts label has been required on food packages for 20 years, helping consumers better understand the nutritional value of foods so they can make healthy choices for themselves and their families. The label has not changed significantly since 2006 when information on trans fat had to be declared on the label, prompting manufacturers to reduce partially hydrogenated oils, the main source of trans fat, in many of their products.

The changes proposed today affect all packaged foods except certain meat, poultry and processed egg products, which are regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.

The FDA is also proposing to make corresponding updates to the Supplement Facts label on dietary supplements where applicable.

The agency is accepting public comment on the proposed changes for 90 days.

The FDA, an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, protects the public health by assuring the safety, effectiveness, and security of human and veterinary drugs, vaccines and other biological products for human use, and medical devices. The agency also is responsible for the safety and security of our nation’s food supply, cosmetics, dietary supplements, products that give off electronic radiation, and for regulating tobacco products.

Dina Al Sabah Healthy & Fit Pregnancy Update

Checking in from the 3rd Trimester at 28 weeks !!

Lots to catch up on since I last touched base. I visited DC, celebrated my 40th birthday, took the gestational diabetes screening test (gag!), had my maternity shoot and started working on the baby room.

dina al sabah fitness

At the start of February, I decided that I needed to make more of an effort to walk more. Even with cardio, I felt that I could be more active, so I bought a Fitbit Flex. It was surprising to find out that on an average day, I did not meet the 10,000 steps that are recommended. Most of us have jobs where we sit all day, and unless we make conscious decisions to move, we end up not doing much. I have been incorporating a daily walk along with my gym workouts which has helped keep my step count above 10,000. My husband thinks I have lost my mind as I have started marching about during TV commercials, but I think it is a great way of adding additional activity to your day. I truly believe that staying active is one of the factors in allowing me to have an easier pregnancy with minimal swelling up till now.

My trip to DC was wonderful as I got to catch up with my best friends, eat Baked & Wired cupcakes (hands down the best cupcakes ever!) and walk all over to burn off the calories! I managed to log 22,000 steps one of the days we walked to the Capitol. I thought that my DC cupcake escapade would be the last time I ate cupcakes as I usually do not eat that sort of thing. However, my dear friends decided to surprise me for my birthday, and I ended up with cupcakes, mini cupcakes and cake pops. Of course, I had to sample a little bit of  all the treats which extended my sugar coma for a few more days. Once the sugar coma wore off it was time to take the dreaded glucose screening test for gestational diabetes. The glucose solution was one of the most disgusting things I have had to drink. The sweetness was so cloying that I felt nauseated. Now if only they could give you cupcakes instead!  The little munchkin, on the other hand, loved the sugar and proceeded to dance about for the next few hours. Thankfully I passed!

As far as working out, I have tried to maintain my original schedule, but I have been feeling more tired these last few weeks. I am making it to the gym about 3 to 4 times a week instead of my usual 5. When I am down to 3 days, I usually have a leg day, and then split arms, back and shoulders into 2 separate days. The days that I do treadmill cardio, I set the incline to around 5% so that the booty and hamstrings are activated. I  am listening to my body and am doing only what I feel I am up to. I have to admit that it has been a bit hard to get over the guilt of not making it to the gym, but I know that this is not the time to have a competitor’s outlook on things.I have also been a lot hungrier than usual. The 3rd trimester is when you require the most calories, so I am sure that the hunger is from the drain of growing another human albeit a rather small one (2.5lb at the last check up).  To manage the increase in hunger, I have gone from  4 meals a day to 5 so that I have a mid morning snack and a mid afternoon snack.

I have attached a collage of what I looked like prior to getting pregnancy, and what I look like now. It is pretty amazing how the human body can adapt to growing and expanding to accommodate a baby! I marvel at it daily.

Lewis wins in St. Louis – IFBB Figure Pro Results

Candice Lewis was in the shape of her life at the 2014 Figure International and despited missing out on the top three she wasn’t about to let an opportunity go to waste. She headed to St. Louis, Missouri and scored a unanimous win in the field of 24 women. Lewis’ incredibly tiny waist combined with just the right amount of conditioning propelled her to the win. If she brings a similar look to the Olympia stage this Fall she’ll be a threat for the title.

Dana Ambrose was back in the driver’s seat and back in the top callout. She was just on the outside of the top spots at the Figure International in Columbus but was back in the groove here. She scored a 13, one point better than Monica Labriola who was arguably at her all time best. Monica has nice shape and she found the right balance of conditioning to suit her frame this time around. Allison Frahn and Natalie Waples rounded out the top five.

Congrats to all the Figure Pros and to promoters Jack and Ann Titone on another successful event.

Kelly Clark & Taylor Gold Win 2014 US Open Halfpipe Titles
Vail, CO (March 8, 2014) — Kelly Clark (USA) and Taylor Gold (USA) became 2014 halfpipe champions and went away $45,000 dollars richer at the 32nd annual Burton US Open Snowboarding Championships presented by MINI at Vail Mountain today. On a classic bluebird afternoon, the fourth and final day of the legendary event was perfection.

kelly clark

2014 Olympic bronze medalist Kelly Clark solidified her seventh Burton US Open halfpipe title this afternoon with a run that included a frontside 1080 indy, Cab 720 mute grab, indy to mute grab, backside 540 tail grab, frontside 900 indy, and a backside air, scoring an 89.33. 30-year-old Clark holds the honor of the most wins in US Open history. In other achievements, Clark picked up her fourth World Snowboard Tour halfpipe title today too.

“The US Open means a ton to me,” said Clark. “I grew up nine miles away from the US Open. It really holds a near and dear place in my heart. If I could pick a contest to win, it would be this one. I’m really happy I was able to put down my run today.”

Taking second place honors behind Clark was 2014 Olympian Queralt Castellet (ESP) followed by Chloe Kim (USA), who landed her first podium at the US Open. At just 13 years old, Kim became the youngest World Snowboard Tour Overall Champion with her win today. Her results towards the overall title are impressive. In addition to achieving extraordinary halfpipe results for her age, including a silver medal at X Games, she managed to land two slopestyle results this season— fifth place at the US Rev Tour and 11th in USASA Nationals.

After the women, the top 10 men put on an incredible performance for the packed house. 2014 Olympian Taylor Gold (USA) won his first US Open halfpipe title today. 20-year-old Gold took a victory lap after stomping the best run of the day complete with a massive method air, frontside 1260 tail grab, double Michalchuk melon grab, frontside double cork 1080 indy, Cab 1080 roastbeef, and a crippler chickensalad, scoring an 87.63.

“Coming into the event, I wasn’t really putting a lot of expectations on myself,” said Gold. “It was a relief to have the Olympic cycle over with. Just having fun here was my main goal, so walking away with this is beyond anything I expected.”

In second place for the men was 2014 Olympic bronze medalist Taku Hiraoka (JPN) and 17-year-old David Habluetzel (SUI) finished third. The World Snowboard Halfpipe Title also went to Hiraoka, for his great season.

The Sicktrix.com best trick award presented went to Chloe Kim for her switch method and Ben Ferguson for his double crippler. Each rider walked away with $5,000.

To celebrate the final night of the 2014 Burton US Open, there will be a rider awards ceremony starting at 6:30pm MST at the Solaris Stage followed by a free concert with Capital Cities and the official US Open closing party at Dobson Ice Arena featuring DJ Jazzy Jeff and A Tribe Called Red.

2014 IFBB Australia Pro Figure Results & Scores

Candice Keene continued her winning ways down under at the 2014 Australia Pro Figure competition. She made the trip from the U.S. after winning her second Figure International title. Candice was the unanimous winner on the judges scoresheets and coasted to another victory.

Heather Dees finished in second, matching her placing from last week at the Figure International. Moving back up into the top spots was Ava Cowan with a solid third place score. Amanda Doherty jumped up to 4th place and Larissa Reis rounded out the top five.

The surprise of the show has to be two-time Figure Olympia Champ Erin Stern not being in the top callout or second callout for that matter. She was not as hard or conditioned as the other competitors however those who follow the Figure division have seen Erin in fairly similar condition and still finish in the top five. She opted to skip the Arnold after a second place finish at the 2013 Olympia and make this her first show of the year. Erin finished in sixth, her lowest finish since as a pro since her debut in 2009.
