SiouxCountry.com Breaking New Ground For Females

Props to Siouxcountry.com and the community that has been built celebrating the females. The site is still relatively new, however it has managed to accomplish what most forums never achieve… build and maintain a following. I’m a supporter of this forum in large part because the owner/creator maintains a positive atmosphere that is free of the usual online/forum whoo-haa. Sure there are a handful of twits that seem to have nothing of value to add (and they are usually male pissing matches) but like anything in life it comes with the territory. This is a site we recommend in my Muscle & Fitness Hers magazine column as well as here on Hardbody.com. If you’re a female looking for a friendly online community this is the place to be.

Recently the site did something above and beyond what most forums would dream of doing. It held a contest and rewarded sponsorships to a handful of deserving females. The big winner was NPC Figure competitor Alyssa Stroud. I remember seeing Alyssa at an Arkansas figure contest a couple of years ago where she won the overall title. She has a ton of potential and without a doubt very deserving of all the prizes she received. Alyssa wasn’t alone in taking home some goods. Check out all the winners and what they received on this thread.

Look for more with Alyssa in the coming weeks and mad props to all the contributors at Siouxcountry.com.

Muscular Development Magazine Fires Dave Palumbo & John Romano

More changes are taking place in the bodybuilding publishing world. Today Muscular Development magazine fired Dave Palumbo and John Romano. Dave and John were both supporters of female bodybuilding while at the magazine but were also two of the most out-spoken people in the industry. The reasons for the termination are not yet known. Dave Palumbo works with a number of competitors on their diet and nutrition as well as running Species Nutrition. John Romano was part of MD for over a decade as one of their more talented writers. The two also ran No Bull Radio, which has been cancelled as well. According to owner Steve Blechman they already have someone new in place to run their online efforts. Blechman wrote on their message board, “We are pleased to announce that Robbie Durand will be the new Editor in Chief of www.musculardevelopment.com effective today.”

It will be a story to watch in the coming weeks to see if this is good or bad for the women in the industry. Stay tuned for more info as it develops.

The Lady Magnet Georges St-Pierre

I’m in Las Vegas for UFC 94 and have yet to meet a woman who doesn’t drool over the mere mention of Georges St. Pierre. Gotta give the guy props, he carries himself in a very professional manner and is always in top shape. He could hold his own in a middleweight bodybuilding competition. Here’s a photo for all the GSP fans from yesterday’s weigh-in.

Former WWE Diva Kristal Marshall to Lay the Smackdown on NPC Bikini

All the critics jumping to conclusions about the type of women entering the new bikini division might want to rethink things. I caught up with former World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) diva Kristal Marshall at the LA Fit Expo and she tells me she will be entering the NPC Bikini division at the Arnold Classic. Kristal was rock’n the Champion Nutrition booth and excited about getting into the fitness scene.

kristal.jpg

No stranger to success Kristal has an impressive resume. Kristal has been a competitor in the Miss California pageant, a model on Deal or No Deal, was a Barker Beauty on the Price is Right and appeared in musice videos for 50 Cent. As if that wasn’t enough she’s also a new mother. Watch out bikini contestants, Kristal Marshall is putting y’all on notice. Don’t let the pretty face and hardbody fool ya, she can still lay the smack down. 🙂

UFC plans to go toe-to-toe with Gyms

It will be interesting to see how this one unfolds in the next couple years. Yesterday, the UFC announced it would be starting it’s own line of gyms. Is this a step in the right direction or should the UFC stick to what it’s good at, fight productions/promotions? Only time will tell but they won’t be the big dog on the block (like they are in the world of mma) when they break into the gym business. I’m all for anyone or anything promoting health and fitness in a positive manner. If the gyms get more people to workout and get fit, then rock on.

USA Today Reports:

“We’re going to force all these other gyms to take it up to another level,” UFC President Dana White told The Associated Press on Monday. “Just like we have in the fight business, and everyone’s trying to compete with us now, same thing’s going to happen in the fitness industry.”

White said most gyms and health clubs haven’t changed in years, giving the mixed martial arts league an opportunity to attract new fitness customers or others wanting to get different kinds of workouts under the same roof. The gyms aren’t intended for professional or amateur fighters.

No word on whether you’ll be required to wear a TAPOUT t-shirt in order to workout or if you’re AFFLICTION shirts will be ban you from enrolling.

Caption This: Yogi Avidan & Fitness Model Jennifer Celeste

I photograph a number of events throughout the year and the best candid/expo photos are often the goofiest. It’s the funny, unexpected shots that tend to stick out more than the canned, stage shots. Now is your chance to join in the fun. A new section we’ll be posting periodically here on hardbody is, “Caption This”. In the comments field leave share your best caption for the featured photo.

Let’s get things started with this amusing shot with Ron “Yogi” Avidan and Fitness Model Jennifer Celeste. Jennifer was working the Champion Nutrition booth at the LA Fit Expo, where this shot was taken.

Tanji Johnson Readies for the Fitness International

I caught up with American Gladiator (Stealth) / IFBB Fitness Pro Tanji Johnson while she was working the Gaspari Nutrition booth at last weekend’s LA Fit Expo. Tanji is just a few short weeks away from taking the stage at the Fitness International in Columbus, Ohio. Like most fitness competitors, she wasn’t giving up what her routine would be. Tanji looked like she was well on track with her conditioning. Stay tuned for more Arnold updates in the coming weeks.

Miss America – “bodybuilding meets beauty pageant”

A few hardbodies caused some commotion at the Miss America pageant. A story described the contest as, “almost exclusively by Amazonian gym buddies with seriously sculpted figures.” A number of the contestants were seen rock’n more muscular physiques than in the past. The writer goes a bit over the top with some of the assements but overall it’s great to see fitness making headlines in the mainstream.
Check out the full story here.

Kim Lyons to Compete Again?

We caught IFBB Pro and NBC’s Biggest Loser Trainer, Kim Lyons checking out posing suits at the LA Fit Expo. When pressed why she was visiting Christine Marsh Designs’ booth and asked if she was going to compete again; Kim smiled and said, “you never know”.
Hmmm… Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

The LA Fit Expo

The competitive season kicks off today with the IRONMAN / LA Fit Expo. A number of sponsors, fans and competitors are in Los Angeles this weekend for the event. If you’re in the area and want a schedule of events, check it out here.

I’m in LA and will be checking in periodically over the weekend with updates from the event. IFBB Figure Pro Houng Arcinas made the trip down from Sacramento last night. IFBB rookie Amy O’Neil will be in attendance working a booth. Ms. Figure Olympia Jennifer Gates has arrived and will be working the Pro Fights Supplements booth. Former WWE Diva Kristal Marshall is in the house with fiancé Bobbie Lashley (former WWE star as well). The two of them will be appearing at the Champion Nutrition Booth. IFBB Figure Pro Rosa-Marie Romero will be at the San Nutrition booth, coming stateside all the way from Australia.
Check back here and at Bodybuilding.com for more updates.

Bodyspace / Ironman Spokesmodel Finals

There is still chance to cast your vote in the Bodyspace / IRONMAN spokesmodel search. 10 finalists have spent the last couple days in LA doing a number of events in the final round. 5 women and 5 men were chosen out of thousands of applicants. Tomorrow night the one male and one female winner will be announced LIVE on the bodybuilding.com IRONMAN webcast. You can cast your votes on bodybuilding.com for you who think should win.

I ran into one of the finalists and hardbody.com reader, Allison Either tonight. She was excited to be part of the final group and hopes to hear her name announced as the winner tomorrow night. This Canadian cutie has been around the fitness scene awhile and thinks she has what it takes to win. I can’t say I disagree with her. She won last year’s Arnold Amateur fitness and will be competing in it again this year. Good luck Allison and all the other finalists.

Actress Rhona Mitra has been appearing on a number morning show programs to promote the new Underworld movie. Camping with the Pros

Many IFBB Pros are taking advantage of their professional status and holding women’s only camps. Many women use these camps for motivation and information. Each camp offers a little something different and held in a variety of locations. The biggest key (aside from your budget) is to finding one that suits you and your needs. Some pros like Monica Brant and Jen Hendershott have proven camps while others are just getting started. IFBB Pro Figure competitor, Jessica Wright has turned her boot camps into a full-time business in Indiana. She may not get a great deal of exposure in the fitness magazines but this woman has found a successful model for her camps. Trainers Mike Davies and Kim Oddo often hold camps with pros they train as well as by themselves.
Here’s a few of the camps put on by IFBB Pros. Have you attended one of these camps? If so let us know how it went. Do you have a women’s only camp and it’s not mentioned here? Drop me a note and I’ll add it to the list.

Trish Stratus got her start as a Fitness Model and parlayed her modeling success into bigger ventures, most notably the WWE. Still in top shape Trish is featured on the current cover of INSIDE FITNESS magazine. INSIDE FITNESS is a Canadian fitness magazine published by Terry Frendo. Terry is doing a great job of putting out solid content with clean design.

Roxy The Raccoon

Earlier I asked which IFBB Pro had a pet raccoon. A couple of people guessed it correctly and yes, it was none other than Michelle “Momma” Flake. I caught up with Momma Flake this week to get a photo of Roxy. It was then I learned that Roxy recently had a heart problem, fell ill and had to be put to sleep. As any pet owner would be, Michelle was devastated.

Next time I’ll check on the pet’s health before asking a trivia question.

An Inspired Nation

obama.jpg
Barack Obama the 44th United States’ President.

The United States of America has a new president, Barack Obama. Today, for the first time in my life, I was inspired by a president. Regardless of your gender, skin color or political views, you can’t help but recognize an individual with charisma and a rare ability to motivate. The new president did exactly that for millions of people across the globe today. There are many challenges ahead for him and the rest of the world but it was nice for one day to take a step back and recharge the life batteries.
Here’s to hope and a prosperity in the years ahead.

Monique Minton Making Waves

momo.jpg
Keep your eye on Momo in ’09.
The first time I met Monique “Momo” Minton was at the 2008 NPC Jr Nationals and swore it was IFBB Figure Pro Mary Lado. I wrote in June to keep an eye on this Lado look-alike, as if that is a difficult thing to do. Monique competed three times on the National NPC Figure stage and held her own in the top five. This year Monique has her sights set on the National NPC stage again but in the new bikini division. She placed well in figure so in theory she shouldn’t in bikini, right? Wrong. Monique has changed up her training to not lift as heavy and won’t have the muscular delts you saw on her last year. She has the physique that, in my opinion, is what a npc bikini competitor is all about. Not too much muscle but clearly works out and looks great. We’ll see if the judges agree when she takes the stage at the NPC JR USA‘s in May, at the first ever NPC bikini pro qualifier.
musclecover.jpg
Monique can be seen in the newest Muscle & Fitness magazine.
Pick up the newest Muscle & Fitness magazine and you will see Monique on about 14 pages. That’s just the beginning of the magazine exposure for her this year. Look for Momo to be on an upcoming cover of Muscle & Fitness Hers magazine as well as featured in future issues of other publications. Monique will also be launching a new web site this year at momofitness.com. UFC fans can often see her working the BSN booth at fights and she will also be working their booth at the upcoming Arnold Classic. Monique tells me she has been taking a few MMA classes but don’t look for her to get into the ring and fight any time soon.

Lots happening in the world of Momo in 2009, don’t look for her to tap out any time soon.

IFBB Figure Pro Meriza DeGuzman Happenings

meriza.jpg
Lots going on with this Pro Figure Momma.

All of you moms-to-be as well as moms looking for some healthy tips, check out the newest article from IFBB Figure momma Meriza DeGuzman. She shares a number of helpful hints and tips for all the mothers out there. Keep your eyes out for Meriza in an upcoming issue of FLEX magazine, where she will be featured in the “Women are Back” section. The photos shot with a hardcore feel have been a hit with the fans and these will be no different. Meriza will be back on stage at the 2009 IFBB California Pro event in a few months. Best of luck Meriza!

Award show follow up

StarPhysique’s Founder, Garba “Mister G” Onadja has informed us that he will be in attendance at this weekend’s LA Fit Expo. We’ll catch up with him in person to see what he has to say on camera. Which has a greater likelihood of happening… Him showing up to the Expo or this event getting rescheduled? Jennifer Nicole Lee is also slated to be at the Fit Expo working the BSN booth. We’ll get her thoughts on the matter as well.

Sic Italian Postwoman / Bodybuilder Under Investigation

An odd story from Italy…

An Italian postwoman won three bodybuilding competitions while she was off sick with a sprained wrist, a Trieste daily reported Monday. The 40-year-old woman, identified as A.C., is under investigation for defrauding the Post Office from April to November, the paper reported. Last year an Italian judge was reported for taking part in sailing events while off sick and a teacher for sending in sick notes while on holiday in Central America. Italy’s civil service has a poor record for absenteeism, clocking up about an average four days more than the private sector. Civil Service Minister Renato Brunetta has launched an ‘anti-slacker’ crusade which has made him one of Italy’s most popular ministers.

I guess if you’re on sick leave with a sprained wrist it means you shouldn’t compete in a bodybuilding contest.

Hardbody Exclusive: StarPhysique Award Flop

The StarPhysique Awards. What? You’ve never heard of them? You’d think that an event that professes to be the “The Oscars of the fitness industry” would have a little buzz behind it. Fitness model, Jennifer Nicole Lee issued a press release last month where you’d swear it was an event as big as her Oprah appeance.

“Being honored is a milestone in my career. I am humbled to be among the best of the fitness industry and Mixed Martial Arts industry. And I would like to thank all involved to make this incredible event happen. I would also like to congratulate all other fellow athletes who are being awarded, especially my fellow Team BSN athletes. This will be an event not to be missed!” says JNL.

It appears the “night to remember” is a night that will never happen. The StarPhysique Awards were to take place at the Four Seasons Hotel in Westlake Village, California this friday. Ticket prices start at $185 and go up from there, but there’s no mention on the event web site that this event won’t take place.

Less than a week out from the event Garba “Mister G” Onadja, the founder of this event, emailed the nominees informing them of the news. Mister G told the nominees that it was, “due to scheduling and venue agreements not being met”. He went on to say, “After careful thought and deliberations, the alternative venue being offered was simply unacceptable for the type of show and presentation that we have worked so hard to prepare.” Many of those who were nominated booked their flights and hotel stays weeks ago. The founder will certainly be reimbursing them, right? Don’t count on it. The response was, “I understand that in many cases airline tickets have been purchased and will try, to the best of our ability, to mitigate this with either additional tickets to the event (at no cost) or complimentary travel and hotel accommodations during the ceremony for our awardees.”

The founder reassured the nominees that the ceremony would be held at a later date and would confirm in the next two weeks the new date. Good thing because now Mister G is now going to attempt to get Mario Lopez and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to attend.

This is a great reminder to be cautious of events and people who are unproven. There will always be some one promising the moon and delivery nothing. Many people may have good intentions but should that be a free pass to under deliver? I don’t know Mister G or his intentions, but I’d like to give him the benefit of the doubt. An award show honoring hard-working individuals is cool but don’t compare an unproven, first year event to the Oscars. We all have to start some where but those who “get it” don’t try to be something or someone overnight.

I’ll keep you posted on any future developments with this event.

Things NOT to include in a Newsletter

I receive a number of emails every day and a few of them are newsletters from competitors, models or trainers. A newsletter is a good idea to let everyone know what is going on in your world, what’s coming up, etc.

While sorting through hundreds of old emails that have been piling up in my inbox, I ran across one email that had a large PDF attached to it. Please do NOT send people HUGE pdf files. If you have a printed newsletter that is great but when sending it out via email, please compress the PDF and not have it be 10 megabites big. I’d suggest using an email program like Constant Contact or something similar to create a newsletter. Attaching PDFs is fine, just make them small in file size.

Another email, which also had a PDF, was more managable and I opened it out to have a read. It was laced with misspellings and grammatical errors. Do yourself a favor and have someone proof read your email before sending it out to the masses. This person has a “team” of competitors. Cool. Well no, not really cool at all when I read…

“XYZ competitor came in the best I have ever seen but at this level as we found out you must have more mass on your upper body to compete with some of these gorillas.”

I’m not sure if this trainer was attempting to be funny or if he really views the pro figure competitors as “gorillas”. Either way not a good idea. Publishing a newsletter that puts down the competition, when your competitor doesn’t place well, is not a good idea. Focus on the positives and don’t bother mentioning the negatives. It only takes away from the point of what you’re trying to communicate. The only thing I remember from this newsletter was the line above, nothing else sticks in my mind.

Is that the type of thing you want to have people remember you for? I’d hope not.
