Diana Nyad Does It – Swims from Cuba to Florida at Age 64

Diana Nyad became the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage. She accomplished the 110 mile swim after 35 years of defeat. It took her just under 53 hours to finish but she did it and reminded everyone you’re never too old to give up on a dream.

diana-nyad

When Diana reached the shore she said, “I have three messages. One is we should never ever give up. Two is you never are too old to chase your dreams. Three is it looks like a solitary sport but it takes a team.” She first attempted the swim in 1978 and failed several time since.

She face many obstacles along the way. Jellyfish, sharks (although fortunately non this time), along with staying hydrated and fueled. Diana shared with CBS This Morning that the key was to “find a way”. She told the morning hosts, No matter what you come up against, just find a way.

Diana’s story is nothing short of remarkable and one that embodies the human spirit. Read a great feature from our friends at espnW.com on this feat.

She has a documentary, The Other Shore, coming out later this month that highlights her incredible journey.

The Other Shore follows world record holder and legendary swimmer Diana Nyad as she comes out of a thirty-year retirement to re-attempt an elusive dream: swimming 103 miles non-stop from Cuba to Florida without the use of a shark cage. Her past and present collide in her obsession with a feat that nobody has ever accomplished. At the edge of The Devil’s Triangle, tropical storms, sharks, venomous jellyfish, and one of the strongest ocean currents in the world, all prove to be life-threatening realities. Timothy Wheeler’s documentary brings Diana Nyad’s extraordinary adventure to life as Diana sets out to prove that will and determination are all you need to make the unimaginable possible.

Also winning their class and turning pro were Andrea Calhoun, Kaelin Tuell, Jennifer Brown, Alicia Coates and Roshanda Schmitt.

This is always a very competitive show and this year was no different. Many of the women in each class showed tremendous potential and will certainly make their presence known in future competitions. Congratulations to all the women!

NPC JR Nationals – Fabulous Female Friday Review

Hundreds of NPC female competitors took the NPC Jr Nationals‘ stage on Friday in hopes of leaving with IFBB Pro status. The Bikini competition dominated with the most entrants while women’s bodybuilding foreshadow its future. Only four women entered women’s bodybuilding and while the numbers for this show are always smaller than USAs or Nationals because of no pro card, four shows the writing on the wall.

2013-jr-nationals
Women’s Physique continues to thrive and come into its own as a viable division in the amateur ranks. The women in the physique division are more streamlined and while they are muscular they’re looking more like a Figure competitor with more muscle than a downsized bodybuilder.

The Figure competition showcased a number of very good competitors and while there’s no clear cut overall winner many of the classes showcased women with tremendous potential. The Bikini division was also very competitive with the C class being the largest. You know a class is large when the competitor roster takes up two pages.

Fitness had a decent showing compared to what we’ve seen in prior shows. While it’s a fading division in terms of numbers it’s still the most entertaining. The winners in each class will hold their own in the pro ranks but will likely need to be a bit more muscular in order to hang with the likes of Adela, Oksana or Tanji, the leading pro competitors.

HARBODY Predictions:
These are simply opinions and observations. They do not reflect the final out come of the show or reflect the judges’ opinions or those of the NPC. Check out all the photos from the show here.

FITNESS: Each class winner will achieve IFBB Pro League status. See the prejudging fitness routines and 2-piece photos here.

Look for Shannon Siemer to take the Fitness A class. She had not only the most complete physique but also the best routine in the class.

Nicolette Spencer had the best physique and should finish in the top spots for the routines and put her in the winner’s circle. Lishia Dean has been a long-time amateur favorite and could be in the top three but missed her conditioning in the physique round. Deanne Fry has the muscle and the physique to be in the top spots but will her routine be high enough on the scorecard? She broke out some old school Carol Semple moves in her routine.

Carly Lobato was the standout in the C class, women over 5′ 4 1/2″. She had great flexibility and a number of strength moves throughout. She also maintained her pace from start to finish. Many women start strong but end out of breath. Debbie Sizemore had a rather bizarre choice in the routine round. She brought out a huge prop which looked like a set of jail bars. It was distracting for the majority of her routine. Kimberly Stroup will be in the hunt for the top spot and should be in the top two. She had a solid routine and in the top spots for the physique round.

Barbie Thomas continues to awe and inspire everyone. She performs fitness routines and does move with ease, all with no arms. You can’t help but get a little choked up when she takes the stage. She reminds us all that there are truly no excuses. Mad respect to Barbie.

Women’s Physique: This is how I see the placings going but again they are NOT final. The winner of each class will be eligible for IFBB Pro League Status. View prejudging photos here.

Class A:
1. Erica Blockman
2. Michelle Davis
3. Justine Ansolone
4. Dawn Meininger-Wahlgren

Class B:
1. Stephanie Willes
2. Heather Mell

5. Jennifer Underwood-Kallas

Class D:
1. Heather Barbee
2. Zandra Starr Minita
3. LeeAnn Friemoth
4. Amanda Kinnaird
5. Christine Moyer
6. Delia McNeil

Women’s Bodybuilding:
No disrespect intended to the four women who did step up and enter the show but this was, in my opinion, foreshadowing of the division. When only four women total show up, you know things are going downhill fast. Props to the four women who did enter.

Light Heavyweight
1. Laura Brown

Heavyweight
1. Kasia Topor
2. Carrie Rapp
3. Lisa O’Kelly

BIKINI:
The winner of each height class will be eligible for IFBB Pro League status. The bikini competition was some of the best to date and the physiques continue to improve across the board. View prejudging photos here.

Bikini A:
1. Ashriel Osgood
2. Yasmin Ali
3. Annie Parker
4. Elle Delallo
5. Caryn Paolini

Bikini B:
1. Susan Waters
2. Nissan Weaver
3. Lisa Schimkat
4. Sana Shah
5. Alli Petriella
6. Melanie Kate
7. Lisa Campbell
8 Amy Lindsey

Bikini C:
This was a HUGE class. It was a very tough competition and also had something happen, I hadn’t seen before. Miroslava Reese was in the fourth callout but was brought back with the top five women in a final callout and put in the middle. What that will mean, if anything is anyone’s guess. I spoke with the head judge on this an she told me she thought Miroslava had been overlooked and deserved a look at the top spots. Whether she will finish there or not, we’ll see but it’s a good reminder to all competitors you never know how things will go until the awards are handed out.

1. Collette Barbera
2. Yarisha Ayala
3. Angeles Burke
4. Antanique Lanry

5. Alexis Nicole Jones

FIGURE:
The winners of each height class will be eligible for IFBB Pro League status. This was a very competitive group of women and if the overall winner follows in previous winners’ footsteps they’ll be great. Last year’s winner Mallory Haldeman went on to compete in the Olympia the same year as turning pro and the prior year Candice Lewis took top honors. Candice has positioned herself as one of the top women in the pro ranks as well. View prejudging photos here.

4. Rocio Ruiz

2013 Arnold Amateur Competitor Lists

The 2013 Arnold Amateur competitor lists have been posted today and keeping with the continued trend, the bikini and figure division dominate the divisions. The other sad trend is the decrease in fitness numbers. Only 10 women have entered the amateur fitness division. Women’s bodybuilding sits around 20 competitors and the new women’s physique division is just over 30 total entrants. Many of the Bikini divisions have over thirty in each height class.

arnold-amateur

Reebok & Spartan Race Announce Global Partnership

Reebok continues to make waves in the world of fitness by partnering with popular fitness events. They teamed up with Crossfit for the Crossfit Games and now they’ve aligned themselves with obstacle racing, specifically Spartan Race. Matt O’Toole, Chief Marketing Officer at Reebok, said it best, “At Reebok, we recognize that the fitness landscape is changing. More and more, people are beginning to see fitness as part of their lifestyle rather than simply an activity.”

Props to Reebok for recognizing fitness movements and aligning their brand with them.

PRESS RELEASE:

Canton, MA January 17th, 2013 – Reebok, the global fitness brand, and Spartan Race, the world’s leading obstacle racing series and Outside Magazine’s Best Obstacle Race in 2012, have today announced a multi-year partnership. The collaboration marks Reebok’s commitment to one of the world’s newest and fastest growing sports – obstacle racing.

As part of the multi-year collaboration, Reebok will be the title sponsor for the global race series beginning with the first race of the season at Vail Lake Resort in Temecula, CA on January 26th and 27th, and the official apparel, footwear and accessories supplier for the Reebok Spartan Race series. In addition, the Reebok Spartan Race will be featured in the brand’s upcoming global marketing campaign – the first time obstacle racing has been featured in a major campaign. Reebok also plans to develop a range of products specifically created for the demands of Reebok Spartan Race athletes, which will be available in fall 2013.

The partnership was launched with a traffic-stopping live event in New York – The Reebok Spartan Race Times Square Challenge. Times Square’s first ever extreme obstacle race saw hundreds of contestants take part including actress/model Brooklyn Decker; former NY Giants All-Pro Tiki Barber; Spartan Race Champion Hobie Call; and Spencer Hendel, winner of the Obstacle Course event at the 2012 Reebok CrossFit Games. The Times Square course featured a 7 ft. wall climb, a mud crawl with barbed wire, a 10 ft. high Hercules Hoist, a 75 ft. sandbag carry, and other obstacles..

The tie-up between the two brands is built on shared values about the future of fitness. Reebok’s mission is to change the way people perceive, experience and define fitness and empower them to be physically, socially and mentally fit for life. Spartan Race is the perfect partner to help spread this message. Founded in 2010, the race series expects to attract 500,000 athletes in 2013, up from 350,000 in 2012, many of whom are people looking for a new alternative to more traditional forms of fitness. Spartan Race currently has more than 2.3 million “likes” on Facebook and is one of the fastest growing series in the sport of obstacle racing.

Spartan is a timed event series featuring races at three escalating distances in locations worldwide. The series culminates in a world championship finale with a prize fund of over $500,000. As well as the competitive elite heats, Spartan Races are set up for all levels and ages of athlete to take part and engage in a new form of fitness.

“At Reebok, we recognize that the fitness landscape is changing. More and more, people are beginning to see fitness as part of their lifestyle rather than simply an activity, said Matt O’Toole, Chief Marketing Officer at Reebok. “Spartan Race is at the forefront of this movement. It enables people to come together to experience fitness with a community of like-minded people – to take part in something that is challenging and daunting, but at the same time, inspiring and fun. This is what makes it so rewarding, and is a large part of what is fueling the incredible growth of the sport.”

Adds Spartan Race founder Joe De Sena, “Reebok shares our vision – they think, act, and live exactly like we do down to the last detail. Both organizations believe that through fitness, ordinary people can realize their full potential and reap benefits throughout their lives.

“Reebok will help us expand globally, pursue our goals of making obstacle racing an Olympic sport, share the healthy living we promote, and rip people off their couches and do what human beings were made to do: run, jump, sweat and climb,” De Sena said.

Swann Cardot Aka Frenchy Crowned New IFBB Pro

If you’ve been a visitor to this website the name Swann Cardot is a familiar one. I first interviewed the tiny dancer from France in November of 2011. She put together an impressive winning streak in the amateur NPC Figure ranks and had the looks to match the on-stage physique. Today Swann learned that she was granted IFBB Pro status from her native country of France. She earned IFBB Pro status with her impressive amateur competitions resume. Since she’s not a U.S. Citizen she wasn’t permitted to compete in NPC pro qualifiers.

swann-lead

Swann isn’t the first to successfully petition for a pro card from her native country. Bikini Olympia Champion, Nathalia Melo did it. Dina Al-Sabah did it years ago by cleaning house in Figure. Arnold bound Marcela Tribin petitioned successfully in her homeland of Columbia. Join me in congratulating Swann aka Frenchy in her announcement. Swann shared she was super excited with the news and still in a state of shock. She is looking at the New York Pro as her pro debut.

Last year around this time we shared “Follow Frenchy” as she headed into the Arnold Amateur. Check it out to learn more about her and her journey to last year’s Arnold Amateur competition. Swann is a great example of never giving up on a goal, staying focused and determined.

Congrats Swann and welcome to the pros. Follow Swann on Twitter & like her Facebook page.

New Year’s Resolutions & Look Ahead with Hardbody Pros

We caught up with some of your favorite Hardbody Pros to get their take on New Year’s Resolutions and their 2013 mantras. Find out what champion competitors like Nathalia Melo, Adela Garcia, Nicole Wilkins and more had to say about their year in review and a look ahead.  Some experiences were happy times, others sad and some experienced personal growth.

newyearpros

HARBODY Pros:

th_nathalia Nathalia Melo – Bikini Olympia Champion
New Years Resolution: In 2013 I wish for Health to keep on doing what I love to do!!  Well… Winning the Arnold Classic 2013 and keeping my Olympia tittle wouldn’t be too bad either! Hahahaha
Most Memorable Moment of 2012: Most definitely winning the 2012 Bikini Olympia Tittle! Also, my trip to the Capri Island, in Italy, which is a place I have always wanted to visit!
Quote or phrase that best sums up 2012: ”Winning doesn’t make you a better person, but being a good person will make you a winner.” Joe Carlozo
My mantra for 2013 is: To keep on being myself and doing the things I have always believed in.

=====================================

th_nicole Nicole Wilkins – Arnold/Olympia Figure Champion
New Years Resolution: I don’t usually make New Years Resolutions because throughout the year I am constantly setting new goals.  I do however, like the ‘fresh start’ feeling the new year brings.
Most Memorable Moment of 2012: My most memorable moment of 2012 was when I took my mom and my sister with me to Finland for a week.  It was the first time all three of us took a trip together.
Quote or phrase that best sums up 2012: “A good life is when you assume nothing, do more, need less, smile often, dream big, laugh a lot and realize how blessed you are.”
My mantra for 2013 is: I will succeed.

=====================================

th_adela Adela Garcia – Olympia & Arnold Fitness Champion
New Years Resolution:  I would like to enjoy myself a little more. Get back to having fun and being the little crazy chica I used to be.  Get on the cleaning my house more to avoid eating:) basically go back to being me.
Most Memorable Moment of 2012: My fiance Trent Calavan earning his Pro Card at the 2012 NPC USAs. I won my pro card at the USAs and this was his goal and to see him accomplished that was an amazing moment for me. Ha!! Getting my 7 Fitness Olympia title!!
Quote or phrase that best sums up 2012:  Live your own life. Don’t worry what others are doing or think of you. Keep doing what you love to do because in the end, you are the one who should be happy with yourself.
My mantra for 2013 is:  “Continue to evolve in every aspect of life”

=====================================

th_dina Dina Al-Sabah – Figure / Bikini Pro
New Years Resolution: Never make any!
Most Memorable Moment of 2012: Getting engaged
Quote or phrase that best sums up 2012: ” your United flight is ready for check-in”
My mantra for 2013 is: Live every day fully

=====================================

th_tiannaTianna Ta – Bikini Pro, MTV MADE Coach
New Years Resolution: I’ve noticed that during the few years I’ve been competing, I’ve been complaining more and more about my body to my friends. My New Years resolution is to embrace my body at all times of the year. I realize that I’m getting older and my body is changing with it. Sure we all strive to improve our selves, and though no one is perfect, I will continue to work hard to mold my body as perfect as I can make it. I think sometimes we forget that our “stage” bodies are not realistically our “everyday” body, so we find ourselves degrading and beating ourselves up over this. I’m making a conscious effort to learn to accept my body, even though I’m not as “lean” as I am on stage.
Most Memorable Moment of 2012: 2012 was an amazing year for me!  I was blessed to have competed in two of the worlds top shows, where only the best of the best of the IFBB compete: both the Arnold Bikini International, and Bikini Olympia! These are memories I’ll cherish and take with me for the rest of my life, esp since not everyone is able to experience these moments… However, with all of the opportunities competing in the IFBB has given me, I’d have to say my most memorable “moment” was being casted to be the coach and filming”MADE” on MTV.
Quote or phrase that best sums up 2012: “Just keep moving forward and don’t give a shit about what anybody thinks. Do what you have to do, for you.” -Johnny Depp
If I listened to some of the negativity around me, I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish some of the things I did in 2012, therefore, I say, f*ck em! Anything is possible, so shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you will land among the stars 🙂
My mantra for 2013 is: Work harder, play harder but find a balance in my life! Sometimes I get over consumed with the industry and go balls to the wall, but I’m still looking to find the balance between that life, as well as my personal, with my friends and family.

=====================================

th_keene Candice Keene – Figure Champion
New Years Resolution: To be a better me than last year! But mainly to challenge myself with  goals and certain habits. When I think of 2013, SUCCESS and HAPPY are what come to mind 🙂
Most Memorable Moment of 2012: I had several very special 2012 moments, but my most memorable would be placing third at the Arnold. This was the first show of the season, and the highest placing I had in either the Olympia or Arnold. It truly was such a great feeling to know I had brought my best package to date and all of my hard work didn’t go unnoticed, and it was my ignition that fueled my fire for the rest of the 2012 season.
Quote or phrase that best sums up 2012:”Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your OWN powers you cannot be successful or happy.” this phrase is by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale This man had a huge part in 2012 for me. I consistently listened to his audio books, which kept my mind fresh and optimistic. Another one I have really close to heart is, “The Rough is Only Mental.” simply said, very impacting.
My mantra for 2013 is: Don’t pay mind to self doubt..Don’t second guess myself..take those leaps or risks..follow my heart,  remain true to myself, set goals high and set to achieve them to the best of my ability! All in all, Happiness is the main ingredient for my success 🙂

=====================================

th_teresa Teresa Anthony – Figure Champion
New Years Resolution: Most resolutions fail, so with that said I don’t believe in them! I just try to live life to the best of my ability!
Most Memorable Moment of 2012: Losing the love of my life & my best friend…my Mommy!
Quote or phrase that best sums up 2012: Emotionally Challenged.
My mantra for 2013 is: I’m not looking back at what I can’t change. I’m looking forward to setting the bar higher!

=====================================

th_desiree Desiree Niemann – Bikini Pro
New Years Resolution: To bring my best package yet to my pro debut and make the top 5
Most Memorable Moment of 2012: Winning the title of Miss Bikini Bombshell and $10,000 CASH!
Quote or phrase that best sums up 2012: “The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in ones determination.”  -Tomy Lasorda
My mantra for 2013 is: Never give up!

=====================================

th_candice Candice LewisFigure Champion
New Years Resolution: My New Years Resolution is to workout  lol I wish to be healthier year around not just when I’m prepping for a competition. I’m going to start by being alcohol free. I really wanted to go on a wine tour in 2013 but this will have to wait.
Most Memorable Moment of 2012: My Most memorable moment was winning my first pro show at the Omaha Pro. This was one of my goals in 2012.
Quote or phrase that best sums up 2012: “I Can and I will do this”
My mantra for 2013 is: You have the patience and the strength and the passion to achieve your ambitions, your goals and dreams. All you need to do now, is try.

=====================================

th_kristin Kristin Nunn – Figure Pro
New Years Resolution: Give more than I receive.
Most Memorable Moment of 2012: After four years of gong to the Arnold, finally seeing Arnold!
Quote or phrase that best sums up 2012: Never let your fear decide your fate!
My mantra for 2013 is: High risk, high reward!!

=====================================

th_noy Noy Alexander – Bikini Pro
New Years Resolution:  My number one resolution is to hone my listening skills. Even  to long dragged out stories that I have heard 1,000 times. :)))
Most Memorable Moment of 2012: The most memorable moment of 2012 was realizing my once “hobby” passion of training and competing had materialized into a career.
Quote or phrase that best sums up 2012: Do everything with 110% effort and there will be no regrets later.
My mantra for 2013 is:  Set small goals to reach bigger goals. Turn that switch ON.  Make it happen!

=====================================

th_tawna Tawna Eubanks – Bikini Pro
New Years Resolution: Make simple improvements to myself. As a person, in the gym, and in my business.
Most Memorable Moment of 2012: Stepping foot and competing on the Olympia stage!
Quote or phrase that best sums up 2012: “Success is to be doing what you love, and if your doing what you love… you’ve already beat failure.”
My mantra for 2013 is: Make the most of ALL opportunities!

2012 NPC Eastern USA Championships Rescheduled

The 2012 NPC Eastern USA Championships scheduled to take place on November 3, 2012 has been rescheduled to November 18. Due to hurricane Sandy the show had to be rescheduled despite the promoters best efforts to hold the show this weekend.

2012 easterns rescheduled

ANNOUNCEMENT:

via npcnewsonline.com

Despite our best efforts, we are unable to hold the Eastern USA Championships on November 3. But the SHOW WILL GO ON. The event has been RESCHEDULED for SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 18 at the Tribecca Performing Arts Center (same location).

For details keep checking www.bevfrancis.com

Downtown New York City has suffered unprecedented damage from Hurricane Sandy and the Tribecca Performing Arts Center is closed for repairs. The damaged venue along with the persistent transportation shut downs and delays makes it unfeasible to hold a contest on November 3 that would meet the high standard of the Eastern USA.

So on November 18, we will deliver top-notch venue, extraordinary staff, expert judging, and unrivaled competition you’ve come to expect the NPC New York. Along with something more!

Rescheduling the contest has allowed us to add a one-time special event: THE NEW YORK PRO SEMINAR featuring Mr. Olympia Phil Heath. Immediately following the Eastern USA pre-judging, Heath will be on stage to discuss training, nutrition, supplements, and even answer questions from the audience!

If that isn’t enough, joining Mr. Olympia on stage will be Pro Figure star Ava Cowan, Bikini Champion India Paulino, 3x Olympia 202 Champion Kevin English, Team Bombshell’s Shannon Dey, and IFBB Pros Juan Morel, Marco Rivera, Jon De La Rosa, & more!

We appreciate your understanding and continued support and we hope to see you on November 18!

Hardbody Interview: Tara Scotti Returns to Competition

If you’re new to the IFBB competitive scene you may not recognize the name Tara Scotti. Those of you who have followed the Figure division know exactly who Tara Scotti is. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Tara for nearly a decade and she’s the type of friend that you can go months without talking to but as soon as you do it’s like you never missed a beat. When Tara told me she was thinking of coming back to compete, I wasn’t surprised. She’s a competitor and when she puts her mind to something look out, she means business. A lot has changed in Tara’s universe since we last saw her on stage. I caught up with Tara for an interview as she returns to the competition stage for the first time in nearly six years.

Tara competed in the 2001 NPC Figure Nationals (the first time figure was part of Nationals) and finished in the top five. She stood next to eventual Olympia champions Davana Medina and Jenny Lynn at that show. She stepped away from the scene for a couple of years but the competitive spirit brought her back in 2003. When she returned, she took home the overall NPC Eastern USA Figure title and locked her sites on turning pro. Tara competed at the 2004 NPC JR USA Championships and won not only her class but also the overall Figure title. In those days, only the overall winner was awarded IFBB pro status. She wasted no time jumping into the big leagues and ended up  fifth at the 2004 NY Pro Figure, her IFBB debut. Tara put together an impressive competitive resume with several top five finishes and notched a win at the 2005 Toronto Pro.

Fast-forward to 2012 and Ms. Scotti is BACK and she’s never felt better. She’s met the love of her life, had a baby and ready to return to the stage that started her pro career. Tara will be competing at the 2012 New York Pro Figure competition and she was kind enough to share what she’s been up to since we last saw her compete.

What’s up wild woman how the hell have you been?
Hi Isaac. So happy to be talking to you and Hardbody.com once again! Haha!

Still living in New York?
Yes, of course I am still a New Yorker!

A lot has changed since we last heard from you…
Ya think? So much has changed.  All for the best and all positive. What hasn’t changed is my love of fitness and my competitive drive.

One major addition in your life, you had a baby, how old is she?
Our little bundle of joy, Brooke, aka Brookie Cookie, is 8 months. She’s absolutely amazing. I am just loving being a mom so much.

Did you continue to train while you were pregnant?
I lightened it up but still hit stairmaster and elliptical daily. I never wanted to let myself go too much. I’ve seen how hard it is to grab hold of after the baby comes through friends & clients so I was always cognizant of it. I think whatever I did has contributed to Cookie having superhuman strength. That baby is an infant Hercules!

How did you diet/nutrition change during the pregnancy?
No weird cravings like I expected. I kept my diet clean for the most part but allowed myself my favorite treats like pizza and cheeseburgers once in a while. No alcohol. I have passed some of my diet and training tips to friends of mine that are expecting and they seem to be having a pretty easy go of it.

What was the most challenging part of your first pregnancy?
Hmmm… letting go of some of my control. I like things a certain way, orderly (some would even say mild OCD but I say nah) and a baby comes, or even before the baby comes, and you just have to let go of some of that control. The baby is first priority above everything. And the sleep deprivation is no joke. Even on nights when she’s sleeping longer, I’m up checking on her or staring at the monitor.

Will baby Brooke be getting a brother or sister any time soon?
Well first let me say that Brooke has a sister, Taylor who is 9 years old. Even though they are half sisters the bond and love they have for each other is full blown sisterly love so I don’t feel like Brooke will be alone in the world if I don’t have any more.  That’s my nice, long answer for “No way I!”

HAHA. Fair enough.

What advice would you give mothers out there in regards to staying fit after a pregnancy?
I’ve been able to help some clients greatly in this regard and they are loving me for my advice now. Don’t wait for after the pregnancy to stay fit. Keep your fitness a priority (albeit a smaller priority than non-pregnancy times) but make time for even a small cardio session. And absolutely do not use that time as an excuse for binging; you will regret it after.

Speaking of advice, are you still training people?
I sure am. We have an amazing home gym here at our house. I have a few clients come here daily and then one day a week I have a packed schedule of clients that I go to train at their homes. My mom watches Brooke on that day. I am very fortunate that I can be a stay at home mom & not really work at all right now but that’s just not me. I like generating an income & I love what I do so it’s a win-win situation. :). I have been fortunate enough to have the demand for 1-2 more days of training clients but I am easing into it.

When was the last time you competed?
Isaac! That’s like asking a woman her age.  HA, Seriously…. I think it was West Palm Beach 2006.

Tara after the 2005 Pittsburgh Pro

You’ve decided to come back and compete in the 2012 NY Pro, what made you decide to come back?
Kevin. He reminded me how big a part this was in my life & although I have an amazing life & couldn’t be happier- he flat out asked me if I missed the sport & thought I should dust off the clear heels at least one last time. After doing some soul searching, I felt that I could come back with out sacrificing any time from my family which was hard for me in the past.  I have balance now. I am in the best shape of my life. Never felt better or more comfortable in my skin. I am excited. And it feels good to be excited about the sport and competing again.

For those that may not know, Kevin is your husband…
Kevin is my soul mate & the love of my life.

Has he been to a show and knows what to expect on you getting all painted orange err golden brown?
He has been to shows & has worked out with top bodybuilders in the past as they trained for shows so he gets it.  Kevin also used to wrestle and fight so he knows and understands competing as an individual and the psychology behind it.  He is amazing. This is the first time he is seeing me as an oompah loompa. 🙂

Why did you stop competing when you did?
At that time in my life I was competing non stop.  Not really an off season. One show to the next. I had won a pro show, competed at the Olympia twice, I felt my placings were always quite respectable. I wanted to exit the sport with my head held high. I didn’t want to be that person who stays too long at the party. I was exhausted physically & mentally. I must also add that I was not in a great place personally & I see now how that was a big factor in me exiting the sport. My life fell out of balance toward the end.

What’s been the biggest obstacle for this prep?
Being tired. Being a mommy is tiring. Lol. But seriously, and ironically – this has been the easiest prep I have ever had. I am  fortunate to have an amazing gym here at my house so when I put Brooke for a nap, I go down & train.  And after she goes to bed I do my cardio. It also helps that Kevin is so supportive & doesn’t mind eating grilled chicken and asparagus 7 days a week. 🙂

Do you follow the industry since your time away from the stage?
No, not really.  I am grateful to have made the great friends I have made over the years but since my last show I really do not know any of the new competitors.

Physique you admire most past or present?
I have always been a Monica Brant fan. She’s one of my good friends in the sport. Her longevity & marketability is inspirational to me.

What’s the goal for New York?
Lol. I started off my training with the mindset of “I’m only doing it for me, not too competitive, blah, blah, blah” but as you can attest – that’s just not me. Hehe. So now I’m all about qualifying for the O. Hehe

Will this be one and done or are you planning on going back to Canada where you won your first pro show?
Let’s see how this one goes & then ask me again.I think I have a great efficient routine right now and I am feeling great!

What type of diet/nutrition are you following?
A very different one from years past. Eating clean but less. Not every 2 hours. More like breakfast, lunch & dinner & a extra shake post workout. My days of carrying around Tupperware are behind me. I’ve built my muscle base years ago. It’s easier to maintain muscle then to build.

Any supplements you’d recommend to women?
I have found a couple of supplements that have helped me maintain my focus and stamina post having Brooke and a great multi-vitaman as well. I like to feel natural and not rely heavily on caffeine. Let’s see how I place before I go recommending my secrets!

IFBB Figure Pro Tara Scotti

So we won’t be seeing you in bikini or women’s physique but Figure, right?
Yes, Figure.  If it were a few years ago I’d probably give physique a try but I am leaner & smaller these days so I am a perfect fit for the current Figure division.

What do you think of the new divisions, since they weren’t around in your day?
Ummm… I think Physique is great. Even though I am a lot smaller these days, I am and always will be a fan of female muscle.  That bridge between Figure and Female Bodybuilding was much needed.

Are you on Facebook / twitter or you still hanging out on myspace? 🙂
HA.no myspace, wise ass. On Facebook but under a pseudo name that I have just for family & close friends. Some imposter schmoe has my TaraScotti name and uses my photos on facebook  & it’s been quite frustrating to get it shut down. It’s creepy & annoying that some weirdo is posing as me. I am working on getting it closed and hopefully having him punished somehow. Kev was a law enforcer and his peeps are looking into it.

Thanks T! All the best and welcome back!
Thank you Isaac.  Always great chatting with ya!

NATIONAL PHYSIQUE COMMITTEE CELEBRATES 30 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE BY RELAUNCHING THE NPC NEWS ONLINE
PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, February 28, 2012 – The National Physique Committee was created in 1982 with one goal in mind: giving amateur bodybuilders the opportunity to compete in an organization that put bodybuilding and its athletes first. Now, we are proud to announce that the 2012 competitive season will mark our 30th Anniversary. In conjunction with our 30 Years of Excellence campaign, the NPC News Online (npcnewsonline.com) is undergoing a facelift in order to keep up with the growing demand for bodybuilding-related news, results and information, from both the National Physique Committee and the IFBB Professional League.

“The NPC News has been covering all aspects of the bodybuilding industry for 25 years,” NPC Chairman Jim Manion said. “We felt it was time to redesign and relaunch our web site in order to keep up with the growing number of NPC competitors and their family members, friends and fans looking for news, coverage, results, announcements and information on all of our seven divisions.”

Three decades after opening our offices in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the NPC continues to grow, setting participation records at all of our pro qualifying events in 2011 – led by the National Bodybuilding, Figure, Bikini and Physique Championships in November (943 competitors) and the USA Bodybuilding, Figure, Bikini and Physique Championships in July (689 competitors). This year, the NPC will award a record-setting 284 IFBB Pro cards.

Lee Haney, Ronnie Coleman, Jay Cutler, Dexter Jackson, Phil Heath, Cory Everson, Lenda Murray, Kim Chizevsky, Iris Kyle, Susie Curry, Adela Garcia, Davana Medina, Jenny Lynn, Nicole Wilkins, Sonia Gonzales and Nicole Nagrani are just some of the past and present stars of the IFBB Professional League who got their start with the NPC. In all, NPC athletes have gone on to win a combined 24 Olympia and 38 Arnold Classic titles.

NPC athletes are regularly featured in and on the covers of international publications such as FLEX, Muscular Development, Muscle & Fitness and Muscle & Fitness Hers, Fitness Rx for Women, Ironman, Oxygen and Musclemag International.

Burger King Delivers. Seriously? Seriously.

Chalk this one up to a WTF moment. While First Lady Michelle Obama continues her fight against childhood obesity, fast-food giant Burger King is exploring a delivery option. Talk about failing in whopper proportion.

Burger King canned their creepy King Mascot last year but there is hope for him to return as a delivery boy. In a move that’s almost as disturbing as The King, the number two burger chain has started a delivery service in Maryland and Virgina. Now your fat ass doesn’t even have to get in a car, you can just click a mouse and Burger King will deliver to your door.

Call me crazy but C’Mon! We’ve all eaten fast food at some point but to have it delivered to your home is a bit of a stretch. Ever had fries that needed warmed up in the microwave? They’re nastier than Nicki Manji’s lyrics.

Oh but don’t worry they’ve developed a solution for that. Jonathan Fitzpatrick, chief brand and operations officer for Burger King, tells USATODAY that their “proprietary thermal packaging technology” will ensure “the Whopper is delivered hot and fresh, and the french fries are delivered hot and crispy.”

Well, hell that changes everything sign me up for a double bag of hot and crispy artery clogging nastiness.

You may have to order double what you might ordinarily. As if home delivery wasn’t ludicrous enough there is a minimum order of $8 to $10 plus a $2 delivery charge. That should ensure lazy bastards will order more than just a single Whopper and fries.

Wait, it gets better. The customer has to live within 10 minutes of the store. If you can’t take your chunky monkey butt to a store within 10 minutes from where you reside you’ve got bigger issues than your expanding waistline.

Seriously? C’mon Burger King.

Parts of this story were from USATODAY.com.

Hardbody PROfiles: Meet Candice “Candy Girl” Lewis

When she took the stage at the NPC Jr. Nationals she was the clear cut winner in the Figure division, at least in my book. Candice Lewis is has the genetics that’ll make you do a double take. She’s beautiful, tall and well balanced. Combine that with polished stage presentation, a tiny waist and tight booty… well you have yourself a pro.

This weekend at the Ft. Lauderdale Cup, Candice Lewis from Arizona will make her IFBB Figure debut. Candice never finished lower than first while in the amateur ranks. She’s one to watch as she could make an immediate impact in the pro ranks. I caught up with “Candy Girl” and she shared more about herself.

Hardbody Bikini Preview & Poll: Europa Supershow Dallas

The 2011 IFBB Europa Supershow Dallas Women’s Bikini will be the most competitive show of the year, at least to date. I think it will be more competitive than the Bikini International and could be every bit as competitive as next month’s Olympia. We’ll see 15 women who on their own turn heads left and right in any room. What happens when they all take to the same stage? We’re about to find out.

The HARDBODY Breakdown:

Jessica Anderson: One word. STUNNING! Jess is a name some of you may not remember but you will after this weekend. She is one of the most beautiful women in the IFBB and you may not recall her name because this is her pro debut. She turned pro at the 2009 NPC Nationals and hasn’t taken the stage since. That’s because she’s active duty in the United States NAVY and spent some time deployed overseas. I know she’ll look better than when she turned pro, we’ll have to see if it’s enough to hang in her debut. Regardless, you’ll see a lot more of her coming up.

Jennifer Andrews: Jennifer is up and down in her placings. She could be in the top three or out of the top five. Ordinarily I’d say she’s a favorite for a top three spot but here she’ll have her work cut out for her to crack the top five simply because the field is that good.

Nicole Coleman: She continues to bring her physique down but still packs a bit too much muscle from her power-lifting and figure days. Improvement is the name of Nicole’s game and she’s doing it. Won’t be top five here but if she came finish top 10 would be a win for her.

Dianna Dahlgren: Easily one of the hottest fitness models in the industry but can she translate that to the stage. If she can watch out. We haven’t seen Dianna on stage all year so she might be off her best or she could be at her best. If her booty is tight look for her to be in the top three. Her biggest challenge is presentation, if she can bring some swagga to the stage watch out. Regardless, watch for more Dianna in the magazines in the coming months. She’s an example of a woman who doesn’t have to win a show to get a magazine cover.

Amanda Duncan: A number of people are buzzing about the little blonde Texas tornado. She certainly knows how to work it on stage and this will be her pro debut. I think she’ll be in deep waters and may need a floatie to help her swim with these bikini sharks. She needs to bring a tight booty to hang in the top five, if it is you could see her in the mix.

Sonia Gonzales: The champ has a target on her back and she has used it to fuel herself to coming in better than ever. I think we’ll see an improved booty from Sonia and she will be at her best. She’s a beautiful woman who has improved her physique steadily. She’s not the curviest girl but if she can rock the stage with confidence she’ll be the one to beat. She has shown she’s beatable so it’s not money in the bank for her.

Janet Harding: I love Janet and she is the most persistent woman on the circuit. She’s improved and definitely gotten better but this show will need to be about living in the moment and having fun for her. This is like being in the Olympia for her and if she can finish in the top 10, consider it a win.

Jessica Jessie: Jessica is a bit of a wild card here. When she’s on the money she is in the mix, when she’s off she is way off. I think she’ll have a struggle to be top three here unless her legs are tight. She’s dropped the side walk presentation and toned down the hair flips. She could be top three or on the outside of the top five.

Dayna Maleton: Dayna has one of the best butts in the biz and she’s finally relaxing with her presentation. There’s no question she has the physique to do well it will be how she presents it. If she could finish top five here she should go celebrate with shots of tequila. It will be tough for her to get in there but it is possible.

Christie Marquez: Cute girl but will be one of the women hoping to come in at her all time best. If she can crack the top ten it will be victory for her but this will be her toughest show of her career.

Taylor Matheny: Taylor is adorable. Bubbly personality onstage and off and I hear she’s one helluva a chef. I really like her look and one of the few blondes in the biz. If she can break the top five she should be stoked. It will be her pro debut so she’ll need to put the rookie jitters aside and work it. I like what she’s cook’n up, let’s see if the judges do too.

Brooke Mora: Another gorgeous woman who will likely have more success off stage with her modeling then she will winning shows. She competed in last year’s inaugural Bikini Olympia so she has what it takes to do well. She could be in the top three or on the outside of the top five. It’s her first show of the year so we’ll have to see if she has any bikini rust.

Natalie Pennington: Natalie is a bit of an x factor here. The judges are really drawn to her look and she’s already headed to the Olympia so she has no pressure to qualify. Look for her to be in the first or second call-out.

Talia Terese: Talia is the one to watch out of all the rookies making their pro debut. She won the 2011 NPC USAs just a couple weeks ago and in my opinion it was no contest when it came to picking the overall at that show. She lights up the stage with her smile and has the looks to stop traffic. The question will be how tight her her backside and was she able to stay on her diet since USAs. Competing in shows close together is good for some as they improve with each show and then others it works against them. She’s the rookie to watch, not that it’s a chore to do so.

Cristina Vujnich: She’s one of the few women who can rock short hair and pull it off. It works for her look and she’s an attractive woman. The one thing that could work against her is her facial expressions when she presents herself. I know it sounds silly but I often wonder what she’s thinking while on stage. When she smiles she’s golden when she’s not it’s like she’s trying out for Zoolander. I like her look but I think she’ll struggle to crack the top three in her debut. If she can make top five she should be stoked because even that will be tough here.

A few things I hope NOT to see from these pros today at prejudging. Just MY OPINIONS from someone who is in the pit at nearly every show and seen thousands of bikini competitors since its inception.
• Legs spread wide when posing from the back. It’s not classy and doesn’t flatter your physique so why do it?
• Flipping of the hair by snapping your neck around. Why? It makes you look like you do that for a living off stage. Don’t do it, it’s tacky.
• Don’t do the myspace face or duck bill lips when posing.
• Don’t open your mouth and gasp while posing. You look like a small mouth bass out of water. It’s not a good look, especially in still photos.
• Don’t try to be a cookie cutter. What posing works for one girl doesn’t work for everyone. Just because you see Ali Rosen do a shimmy and a hip pop at the end of her posing doesn’t mean you should. Ali does it and pulls it off as her “signature” pose, find one that works for you.

Cast your vote for who you think will win the Bikini show. I would not want to be a judge at this one, they will have their work cut out for them!

Special Agent Blank Makes IFBB Pro Debut

One of the cool things about the fitness industry is learning about the diverse group that makes up the community. IFBB Fitness Pro Michelle Blank isn’t your average competitor. After the devastation of 911, the Jersey girl decided to do more with her accounting degree and became a Special Agent for the Internal Revenue Services (IRS). This weekend she will compete in just her third fitness show. She won her first show, turned pro at her second competition (2010 NPC JR Nationals) and will make her pro debut at the NY PRO Fitness. I caught up with Michelle days out from her debut.

Still live in GA? Yes on lovely Saint Simons Island!

You have an interesting  job. Tell people what that is. I’m a Special Agent for IRS – Criminal Investigation. Currently I’m assigned to our National Criminal Investigation Training Academy as an Use of Force Instructor & the National Physical Fitness Coordinator for our agency.

I am actually teaching an advance training class to our field Defensive Tactics Instructors this week. So it’s very hectic at work during my final prep week, but my fellow instructors are very supportive of my prep.

Do you have gun? I can’t tell you where I put my gun, but it is secured and I am a good shot!

Noted. HA!

How did you get into that as a career? I learned about the IRS-CI Special Agent position my junior year at  college when a Special Agent gave a presentation to my Accounting & Finance Society. I was unaware the IRS had criminal investigators and was intrigued by the position but at that point never considered a job in law enforcement. My senior year of college began on September 11, 2001. I remember every detail of that morning. As I was getting ready to leave for school, the first plane hit the World Trade Center. At first the news was uncertain what had occurred. As I sat there watching Charlie Gibson on Good Morning America, I saw the second plane hit. I was in complete shock. I had to leave  for class so I continued listening to news reports on my car radio. As I was driving, the third plane hit the Pentagon. Interestingly one of my first classes was Violence in America. As a result of the horrendous attacks, our professor changed our first assignment to a paper regarding the events occurring that day. It was a difficult paper to write as so many things were uncertain and the number of  fatalities continued to change. It was a life-changing day for many reasons. The following month, the same Special Agent from the previous year, spoke again at our Accounting & Finance Society. At the end of her presentation, I asked her what I needed to do to apply. After the September 11, I decided I wanted to do more with my accounting degree than working in an office doing tax returns or putting together financial reports. I wanted to make a difference in some way. I felt that the position of an IRS Special Agent would give me an opportunity to serve my country and use my accounting skills. I applied for the job in October 2001 and finally became a Special Agent in 2004. In November 2009, I was assigned to our training academy to train our new agents as well instruct current agents in advancing training for defensive tactics and became our  agency’s National Physical Fitness Coordinator.

Are your co-workers supportive of your fitness endeavors? Work is very supportive. My passion for fitness is what led me to being assigned to our training academy. When the agency was fulfilling the position, they were looking for someone that not only had the ability to instruct defensive tactics but was supportive and enthusiastic about our fitness program. The agency felt I would be an excellent role model not only for our new students especially the female students, but also for our incumbent agents required to maintain fitness standards. They were very excited to hear about my win at Jr. Nationals and wrote about it in our CiBulletin that goes out to our agents on a weekly basis.

Any tips for those who work a full time job and struggling to eat healthy? Prep, prep, prep. I try to prep everything before I go to bed for the next day including my breakfast. I try to limit cooking to only twice a week and then it’s just a matter of putting the meals together each night. I have great support at work. My coworkers are supportive of my goal and have become use to my constant eating. I also have found which restaurants near work have items I can eat on my diet. This way I can on occasion go out to lunch. I just usually suggest where to go. We often have agents from around the country visiting the training center for various trainings or meetings. Usually the only time you may have time to catch up with them is during lunch.

What’s your athletic background – dance, gymnastics, sheep herding? I started dance with I was 4 years old. I mainly did jazz and  acrobatics. I was almost 11 by the time I started gymnastics. From 11 to 17 my life was gymnastics and I was hoping to go compete in college. When I was 16 I made it to level 9, but then I got a stress fracture in my lower back. I tried to compete the following year, but was still in a lot of pain. I decided to retire from gymnastics at that time. However, 9 years later, I found myself  back in gymnastics. I had started attending open workouts near a gymnastics gym near my house in Pennsylvania. The adult class was going to compete in the State Games for Pennsylvania and asked me to join them. I thought they were crazy since I had only been tumbling and had not touched the other events. In the end they convinced me and we had a great time. After that competition, we developed an adult gymnastics team and started competing in more competitions. The first year for our team, I competed at Regionals in the 15 and up age group and took second.

You are a woman who puts on muscle easily (or so I’m told). How do you train to prevent from getting “too big”? I only do strength training 3 days a week and do 3-4 sets of lighter weight with higher volume. I also take a month here and there off of lifting completely and only work strength moves for my fitness routine. For the month of December, my workouts consisted of light cardio and yoga. I did yoga everyday for a month.

What would bean example of your workout split?
My workouts are usually split as follows:
Legs/Shoulders
Back/Biceps
Chest/Triceps

The other days I work my routine.

What’s your diet look like?
My diet usually consists of 5 meals and a post workout protein shake My diet has gone through 3 stages since January. Consisting of egg whites, tuna, chicken, tilapia, and flank steak. In the beginning it was a mix of all of those.

Then we took out the flank steak and added more Tilapia. I was getting too lean so we added more sweet potatoes and eventually removed all Tilapia and replaced with Flank steak for 2 meals.

Many people might not know but you’ve only done two shows and you’ve won both. Do you think that will help or hurt you going into this show? I’m not sure. I could find reasons for both. Such as nobody really knows who I am since I haven’t been on the scene that long. On the other hand, I think it shows my dedication to the sport and determination. When I set my mind on a goal, I don’t let anything stop me from reaching that goal. I have hit some roadblocks along the way, but adjusted and continued moving forward. One reason I didn’t jump right into a pro competition after I won JR Nationals in June was I wanted to take the time to make improvements the judges suggested and to become more familiar with the sport. Over the past 9 months, I attended several competitions to support my fellow fitness competitors and went to the Olympia and Arnold. I had the opportunity to meet so many great people and have gained many quality friendships. My extended support group has helped me so much in my preparation for my debut.

Did you change anything up with your diet or training this time around? Yes. This time I’m still lifting going into the competition. The last 2 times, the only strength training I did was my routine for the few months leading to the competitions. I’m coming in with more muscle size which has changed my diet as well. My metabolism is much faster this go around and has resulted in my coach keeping a close eye on my leanness and adjusting my diet accordingly.

You train with IFBB Fitness Pro Tracey Greenwood. How did you start working with her? My gymnastics coach Tina Cole asked me if I had ever considered doing bodybuilding and I said at one time I was interested in Fitness. My coach told me about Tracey and gave me her contact  information. I met Tracey and began working with her in January 2009. I was due to compete in June 2009, but broke my foot which pushed back my first competition to October 2009. I would have been lost without Tracey. I was oblivious to all the preparation that goes into Fitness competitions. Tracey helped me select my music, told me who to contact regarding my costume and swimsuits, provided me with all my diets, helped me with my posing, and not to mention all the things you need to prep for the day of competition. For me the routine was the easy part – everything else, clueless. Tracey,  Tina and I put together my routine in 2 hours. I love working with  Tracey. It was so comforting to have Tracey there at Jr Nationals. When she told me I did great, I knew I had done well. She’s up front and doesn’t sugar coat how she thinks you look or do. When she gives me compliments I know she means it and she’s not just trying to boost my confidence.

How long have you been dieting for the show? 12 weeks

Do you feel confident or scared sh*tless? Both! In the end, it’s all on me which keeps me confident. I am my biggest critic. I’m always striving for perfection, knowing there is always room for improvement.

What separates you from others in the fitness division? That’s hard to say. There are so many dedicated woman in the fitness division. I love to compete not only for myself but the opportunity to inspire others. My goal is not to just inspire others to be more physically fit, but to be a more fit person (mind, body and spirit) by living a more positive life with purpose and self accountability. Only you can make the most of your life and only you can stop yourself from reaching goals. Things do not always go as we plan, adjustments will have to take place, but with the right attitude and focus success will come. It’s not an easy road, but how boring life would be without challenges.

What’s on your “first supper” list to eat at after the show? Since we’ll be in NY, a piece of authentic NY Cheesecake.

Any hidden talents people might not know about? I’m a great navigator; I never get lost.

Always helpful when out hunting rabbits.

Any bad habits or random things… IE you sleep with a gun? I love sweets! My cheat meals usually involve ice cream, most likely a warm brownie sundae. Even throughout my JR Nationals diet, I had one Hershey miniature Special Dark Chococate with almond almost every night. I love most professional sports, but mainly the Philadelphia Flyers, Eagles, and Phillies. If I’m watching TV it’s mostly sports related and even though I’m in Georgia now, every morning I listen to the Sports Radio show from Philly, 610 WIP. BTW you can have Michael Vick back!

What’s been the cheesiest line a dude has used? Just last week I had a few. One guy just kept saying “damn” as I walked by. Another guy started with “do you have a husband” followed by “where do you work out, that’s where I’m going”.

I haven’t heard that last one before. Sounds like he was being flattering. No? ok.

What’s the best advice you’ve received in life? Any words of wisdom you try to live by? My mom-mom gave me a plaque years ago that said “I believe in you because you believe in me” It has stuck with me over the years to not only believe in myself, but to believe in others as well. Though we control a great deal of what happens in our lives we are affected by those around us. It’s how we let those people affect our lives that molds who we are and how we live.

Where can people find out more info about you? My website ApprimeFit.Com. Apprime is latin for “above all” so my credo is “Fitness Above All” referring to not just your physical fitness but your mind, body and spirit.

Thanks Michelle all the best in your debut! See more of  Michelle’s competition photos on Bodybuilding.com.

2011 IFBBMuscle Contest Pro Bikini Results & Review

Amanda Latona kept the birthday celebration going with another win. She locked in an unanimous victory at the 2011 Muscle Contest Pro Bikini on Saturday night. This marks the third victory for stunning Vegas star and positions her amongst the division’s elite. Last year, Amanda was crowned the Europa Super show and Sacramento Pro champion.

Continuing her rise in the ranks, Dina Al-Sabah landed in the runner-up position. Dina was fourth a week earlier at the St. Louis Pro and the second place finish at this event marks her best placing as a Bikini Pro. Rookie Pro Abbie Burrows made an impressive debut by securing the third and final Olympia qualification. Burrows turned pro at last year’s NPC Nationals and showed that she’s a contender in the division.

THE HARDBODY BREAKDOWN:

1. Amanda Latona – Amanda switched up her suit and rocked the red. It’s a nice color on her and this was the smallest we’ve seen her booty. Her body appeared to be the most balanced it’s been with her legs not over powering her upper body. If she brings this same look to the Olympia, she will be a contender for the Olympia crown.

2. Dina Al-Sabah – Dina’s physique also looked more in balance than it has. Her legs looked slightly smaller than in the past and it was probably her best look to date. She changed her posing up slightly and it was more flattering to her physique. This is her third show this month so look for her to take a break until the Olympia. Dina’s finish serves as a reminder to other competitors that sometimes making a run at multiple shows can pay off. Tweaking and refining things works versus calling it quits for months between shows.

3. Abbie Burrows – Burrows put the rookie jitters aside and made an immediate impact on the pro ranks. The blue looks good on her but I’d like to see her suit fit her a little better. Her poses were flattering to her physique and displayed a look of a bikini model. I like when competitors present themselves with poses such as the ones Abbie displayed. It’s a feminine look and one that more women should do. Impressive debut and look for her to continue to be a top threat in any show she enters.

4. Zhanna Rotar – Zhanna tied with Anca for fourth but won the tie breaker. I liked her suit, it was classy and fit well. Nothing personal towards her but I wouldn’t have her this high in the placings. I feel Zhanna carries too much muscle and in my opinion shouldn’t be rewarded for it. I’d like to see her shed more of the muscle she built from her figure days in order to be a top five finisher. She definitely improved from last year though.

5. Anca Marcus – I liked the color and cut of Anca suit. I would have placed her in front of Zhanna as her physique is less muscular. I’m not crazy about bikini competitors posing with their legs spread wide from the front or back. It’s not a flattering look and one I feel should be avoided. I think the wide stance in her presentation may have cost her the tie breaker. She’s been to the Olympia before and we’ll have to see if she makes it back this year.

6. Christina Vargas – Definitely Christina’s best showing today and her body was in line with the division versus her struggle whether to go figure or bikini. Her model poses were curvy and flattering to her physique. I would have placed her in the top five. If she brings this same physique to her next show you might find her there.

7. Leigh Brandt – The Canadian Cutie found herself in the middle of the pack once again. Leigh has the potential to be in a top spot. If she can bring her physique in a bit tighter, you’ll see her move up into the top five.

8. Vanessa Prebyl – Prop for being a trooper and getting on stage with stitches and a bandaged nose. I like Vanessa’s look and she was slightly off her game but when she’s on she’s a contender. She’s already qualified for the Olympia with her finish at the Houston Pro, so look for her to refine things and continue to be in the mix at future shows.

9. Jennifer Dietrick – Jennifer has one of the best bikini booties in the pro ranks. I like her physique and would have had her a few spots higher in this line up. I’m not sure this was her best suit to date but she’s definitely one who could move up into the top five.

10. Natalie Abrhiem – This was Natalie’s best showing as a pro and she has the potential to keep moving up. She needed to be a little tighter with her conditioning but a definite improvement from last year.

11. MaryJo Cooke-Elliott – MaryJo  made a return to the stage after a couple years away from the stage. She showed that she’s still got it and brought a nice bikini body to the stage. As she gets more comfortable with her presentation, look for her to move up in the division. If she had been a few places higher I don’t think anyone would have argued with it.

12. Laura Calderon – As I mentioned in my preview, Laura’s suit choice continues to be her biggest mis-step, at least in my opinion. I don’t think they should have allowed her to wear the suit she did as it looked like a thong and was way too small. She needed to be considerably tighter and the wide stance posing is not flattering. She has the potential to be a top five competitor but not with what you saw at this event.

13. Christie Marquez – An improvement from previous shows with her physique. If her presentation improves she’ll continue to move up. Definitely the best she’s looked at a pro.

14. Lindsey Morrison – Lindsey continues to find her groove in the pro ranks. Her suit choice worked against her. I didn’t find it flattering to her physique and overall it was too big, especially the botoms. If she ditches the suit and gets more comfortable on stage she’ll move up. This was only her second pro show so look for her to work through it.

15. Kelly Gonzalez – She’s a tiny woman in structure but continues to improve. She put on a little bit of muscle since last year and it’s working on her. As she continues to refine her stage presence and presentation, you’ll see her place higher in future shows.

16. Jennifer Pimentel – No one wants to be in last place of any competition, especially when it’s your pro debut. Jennifer turned pro at last year’s NPC Nationals and had been created a buzz for herself online. She didn’t bring the same package to this stage but it wasn’t a terrible look. Not everyone’s first show lands them in the top spots but it provides something to build on for future events. Apparently, Jennifer wasn’t happy with her prejudging callouts and decided to call it quits. She didn’t show up for the evening show and I’m told had some unpleasant words for some involved in the event. This may have been the first and last time you see her on an IFBB stage. I was mistaken, her overzealous husband “demanded” that she not return to the finals and it was he that was unhappy with her callouts.

Legend, Elizabeth Taylor Dead at Age 79

Elizabeth Taylor has been an iconic figure in Hollywood for decades. Often appearing in the tabloids for her on again off again relationships (married eight times) and her weight battles, Elizabeth should be remember for more than gossip fodder. She started her movie career at a young age and remained a star until she passed. She was was actively involved with charity work, especially her own AIDS charity, and showed that she was more than just a two-time academy award winning actress. .Elizabeth died Wednesday at age 79 in Los Angeles, California.

Elizabeth battled with weight and openly talked about it in her book. She talked about going from glamorous to overweight and the how she lost the weight. Amazon.com has the book available if you’re interested in it. Mind you the book was published in 1988, but there appears to be some solid insight that stands the test of time and still relevant today.

Elizabeth Taylor: The Queen and I, is pretty spectacular collection of images. Check it out.

Book elizabeth

Elizabeth Taylor: The Queen and I is a remarkable collection of Gianni Bozzacchi’s photographs of Elizabeth Taylor, most of them previously unpublished, capturing her as a film star, a woman, and a personal friend. It was 1965 when Bozzacchi, an impetuous twenty-two-year-old, was given the chance of a lifetime. The streetwise kid from Rome was sent to Africa as special photographer on the set of The Comedians, a movie starring Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Alec Guinness, and Peter Ustinov. As the film wrapped, Taylor offered Bozzacchi a job as her personal photographer. Elizabeth Taylor was the world’s most famous woman at the time and undoubtedly its most glamorous. Her marriage to Richard Burton claimed international attention, and together they were the quintessential jet-set couple. Bozzacchi was to work with Taylor and Burton for the next eleven years. They opened the door to their world for him , and his own talent, drive, and artistic style earned him extraordinary success. Publications wanted his services, as did the movie and fashion industries, celebrities, political figures, and the merely famous. Bozzacchi was awarded the honor of International Photographer of the Year three times and became a celebrity himself, the subject of magazine layouts and television interviews. – Barnes & Noble.com

2011 IFBB Muscle Contest Pro Bikini Championships Preview

This weekend in Culver City, California the IFBB Pro Bikini women will be hitting the stage once again. Fourteen women are scheduled to compete in this event. Last year, this show served as the inaugural pro bikini competition and was won by Sonia Gonzales. Sonia will not be back to defend her Muscle Contest Title so who will reign supreme?

HARDBODY BREAKDOWN:
Natalie Abrhiem –
Natalie turned pro by winning the A class at last year’s Team Universe event. She edged out Kelly Gonzalez for the win and the two will meet up once again but this time as pros. She’s continued to improve her physique and it will be a good test to see how she matches up in her pro debut

Leigh Brandt – Leigh Brandt will make the trip from Canada and has a great look. She continues to refine her physique and if she can bring a tight booty and confidence to the stage she could be a contender. She was 6th at the Sacramento Pro and I look for her to be a top five finisher this time around.

Abigail Burrows – Abbie turned pro at the 2010 NPC Nationals, her first national level show. She found success relatively quickly in the amateur ranks, will she find similar in the pro ranks? She has the potential and it will come down to her confidence on stage and how tight her booty is. Look for her to be a top contender in her debut if she “brings it” to the stage.

Laura Calderon – Laura Calderon has a lot of potential in this division, I only wish she’d bring a different suit to the stage. I’m not a fan of lace on the suits for competitions. It’s great for photo shoots but I don’t think it works for the stage. She was fourth at the Sacramento Pro in her pro debut. I look for her to be a top five contender once again.

MaryJo Cooke-Elliott – MaryJo is no stranger to the stage but this will be her debut in the bikini division. She did her first figure show in 2000 and turned pro in 2006 at the NPC Jr. Nationals. MaryJo took some time away from the stage due to some health issues but she’s back and ready to rock the bikini stage. It’s great to see her back.

Jennifer Dietrick – Jennifer has a great bikini booty however she’ll need to bring a little better stage presence to the show if she hopes to land in the top three. She cracked the top five at the Dallas Europa and finished 8th at the Sacramento Pro to close out the year. If her legs have come down a bit from last year you could see her in a top spot.

Kelly Gonzalez – Kelly turned pro at the Team Universe contest last year and finished 8th in her pro debut. She’s a tiny woman with a lot of spunk. If she brings a tight package with the same sass she’ll move up. Her booty held her back last year but she has the potential to be in the top five with a tight, round rump.

Amanda Latona – The one to beat at this show, in my opinion, is Amanda Latona. She was sixth at the Bikini International but has taken top honors in the past. She ended the 2010 season with a victory at the Sacramento Pro and I look for her to do so once again this weekend. That’s not to say it will be easy for her as there is a field of highly competitive pros in this show. She was third at this contest last year.

Anca Marcus – Anca qualified for the Olympia on this same stage last year. It was a different contest but same venue. She could be a top contender as the judges tend favor her physique. This is only her third show as a pro and will look to bounce back from her 16th place finish at the Olympia.

Christie Marquez – Christie has yet to find her groove in the pro division since turning pro at the 2009 Team Universe. The last time we saw her was the 2010 New York Pro where she finished 16th. She’ll need to be in better shape then she has in the past if she wants to be a contender in this line up. We’ll see how the time away from the stage has served her.

Lindsey Morrison – Lindsey has a great physique and if her booty is tight she can hang in a top spot. The biggest issue for Lindsey is her confidence and exuding that on stage. If she can bring that up and rock the stage with more swagga she could be in the mix. She was 7th in her pro debut at the Ft. Lauderdale Cup.

Jennifer Pimental – Jennifer took the top spot in her class at the 2010 NPC Nationals. She has a nice physique and could be a top five contender in her pro debut. We’ll see if she can bring her A game like she did in Atlanta last fall.

Vanessa Prebyl – Vanessa has been on a misson since turning pro at the 2010 NPC JR USAs. She is already qualified for this year’s Olympia with her third place finish at the Houston Pro. She finished her 2010 season with a fifth place finish at the Sacramento Pro. I look for her to be in the top five once again at this weekend’s event.

Christina Vargas – Vargas switched from Figure to Bikini and then back to Figure then back to Figure. She was 7th at the 2010 Tournament of Champions. If she brings a tight physique to the stage she can do well. She found her groove with her posing as she went and look for her to be in the mix if she continues what she brought last year.

Dina Al-Sabah – Dina will try to make her third time a charm at this weekend’s event. She competed in the Bikini International and last week’s St. Louis Pro where she finished 4th. Can she move into a top spot here? Certainly. I can see her being in the top callout and pose’n it out for the top three.

Zhanna Rotar – Zhanna usually fairs well in California shows and has the luxury of not having to fly to compete in this event. She still carries a lot of muscle on her from from her figure days and doesn’t look totally comfortable on stage. If she’s improved her posing and shed some muscle she’ll move up. We’ll see what she brings to the stage for her first show of the year.

Shelsea Montes “Embrace The Grind”

IFBB Bikini Pro Shelsea Montes is in the final stages of her Bikini International prep. What’s up with the pint sized Puerto Rican? Read how she “embraces the grind” as she heads to Columbus.

So I’m less than 1 week out from the Bikini International… O-M- to that G!!! I can’t believe its already here! I remember 7 weeks ago and having the chat with Adela on the brutal stairmaster about how I wished the competition was already here. And now, here is the last week. My husband and I adopted a quote for the last week that can apply to any journey we go through, “embrace the grind”. Right now this means enjoying the last week of hard work before The Arnold. He is currently opening another business in a different city and I am training for one of the biggest shows of my career. Life is busy for us right now.

With so much piling up, it becomes easy to forget about how blessed we are to have these opportunities. We focus on how difficult things can seem and how much is on our plate, when there are so many out there that wish they had SOMETHING on theirs. This week was pivotal because I decided to turn it all around! Typically, the week before a contest I close myself off from 99.9999% of my ordinary life. I eat. I train. I relax (which sometimes means stress more).

This time around I decided to really enjoy the final week. I entered my husband and myself in a fitness fashion show that is raising money for Susan G Komen, made myself a slower work schedule, and I am getting pampered this whole week. I’m sure you’ve all heard (or if you haven’t you will, hehe) my newest slogan, “if you don’t grind, you don’t shine”. So after all the hard work, it’s time to treat myself!

I hope that I can influence some of you competitors to “embrace the grind” this week. Not only am I going to enjoy this week, but after the show I will too! I can’t stop thinking about my almond joy. Remember to always find the way to enjoy yourself and no matter what, you will shine 😉

– Seashel

P.S. Don’t forget to read my 2nd hardbody blog if you need a packing list and C-BUS IS COLD!!!

P.S. squared… Who’s running the 5k the next morning…..I AM!!!!! Anyone brave enough to join? We can all run as Team Hardbody yay!

Follow Shelsea on Twitter @seashelmontes. If you’re as crazy as Shelsea and plan to run the 5k on Sunday, let us know.

The 2011 Arnold Classic is fast approaching. For some, it will be a first time experience, while for others it will be another opportunity to create memories associated with the long standing event. Whether you are a spectator, booth worker or competitor, hopefully this information will be of some help during the hectic, fun filled weekend. It’s hard to lead a healthy, competition lifestyle far from home, but Columbus is a city that is “Commit to be Fit” and promotes overall health and well being. After living here as a competitor, just minutes from the convention center, I have the inside scoop of where to go for food, (both contest and cheat meals) gyms, tanning, supplements and last minute photo shoot outfits.

FOOD
There are amazing places to eat within walking distance from the convention center, and also places that deliver if you are unable to get away from the event. For breakfast, I highly recommend First Watch, located at 496 South High Street, just 2-3 min drive south of the convention center. They have a healthy options menu, and will also make special accommodations. They only serve breakfast and brunch. http://www.firstwatch.com/index.htm

Next door to the convention center is Mo Joe Lounge and they also serve breakfast, as well as lunch and dinner. They will accommodate, but have fewer healthy options, and their menu is a bit limited. The restaurant is attached to Cup O Joe, a local coffee shop true to Columbus and for all of those Starbucks connoisseurs, you will not be disappointed! They know how to brew a fabulous “Cup O Joe”!!!

North from the Convention Center is North Star Café, 951 North High Street, one of my most favorite places to eat, but not necessarily for a competitor during contest season. All of their food is organic, locally grown and they have gluten and dairy free options. They also have vegan and vegetarian dishes. There philosophy is expressed in ever menu option, and they serve all meals, but primarily breakfast and lunch.

Directly across from the center is the North Market (http://www.northmarket.com), a little hidden but only a block away. Everything within the market is fresh and locally produced. They have food options to go, as well as grocery items to purchase. They have the best fresh seafood, chicken and beef in town if you have the ability to cook within your hotel room. They also have fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables. You will also find a to-go sushi bar with pre-made items and the option to order.

Speaking of sushi, there are very few competitors I know that do not love it (I know they exist, but do not see how)!! Fortunately, the best sushi restaurants are nearby. Across the street is Sushi Rock, a trendy, modern, upscale restaurant that serves primarily sushi but offers a hot menu with plenty of healthful options. There prices are moderate to high, but there sushi is amazing. The downside, they are only open for dinner.

Half a block away is Lemon Grass Fusion Bistro. They have a more limited sushi menu, but have never once disappointed. The restaurant is more laid back, thai inspired and if you go there make sure to order their Lemongrass Soup, (without noodles).

Haiku is a few blocks down the street (800 North High Street) and personally my favorite. They have an extensive menu, great atmosphere and are reasonably priced.

Nida’s Thai on High (976 North High) is a newer restaurant with a sushi menu as well. I have eaten there once, but I will surely go back in the future! Lemongrass, Haiku and Nida’s are open for lunch and dinner and are more casual.

A couple of places in the area that deliver are Shane’s Gourmet Market, they will deliver but have a $75 minimum and Katzingers, true to Columbus only. They will also deliver with a $40 minimum. As a dieting competitor the only thing you could eat are their salads (if you are contest prep) and they are willing to make accommodations. Again, all of their ingredients are fresh, and not processed. When you order grilled chicken, you get real grilled chicken. Personally recommend the Artichoke Grilled Chicken Salad without cheese or bread. Friends or others who you are with that are not dieting will love this place! If you happen to go there, they have samples of fresh made breads and imported cheeses, so beware! They are also famous for their pickles, so make sure to stop by the barrel before you go!

The best place to find other places to eat is http://www.dineoriginalscolumbus.com. Most restaurants are downtown in the Short North (by the Convention Center), Downtown, German Village or Grandview. All are only minutes from all Arnold Events. You almost cannot go wrong with any restaurant listed on this site.

For after show dining or cheat meals, Barcelona is my number one recommendation. Located in German Village, by Shiller Park, it is a meal you will not forget. Spanish inspired, with a simple menu, but very complex dishes. The ambiance is extraordinary. Always great service and an extensive martini menu and wine selection.

Other quick mentions, Lindey’s in German Village, Due Amici located Downtown and the Rossi located in the Short North.

The main grocery store nearby is the Kroger Shopping Market, located on Front Street, south of the Convention Center. This grocery store is very large, and should have everything you would possibly need. During the day they have a hot food and a sushi bar.

GYMS
While in Columbus, I am sure most will need to get their workout on! Most hotel gyms do not cut it for competitors and during this weekend, they are sure to be busy and packed with everyone trying to fight for a treadmill.

Lifestyle Family Fitness is my gym and where I spend most of my time!!! They are located at 21 East State Street in the Fifth Third Bank building right across from the State House. There location is minutes from the Convention Center and all hotels downtown. There is street parking and also a garage that charges $2 per hour when you get your voucher stamped in the gym. This gym has everything you could possibly need! They have an exceptional plyometric room with kettle bells and jumping blocks as well as plenty of room to do other plyo exercises. They also have a large studio that is open to everyone to use when classes are not in session. For other cardio work, they have treadmills, bikes, cybex trainers, stair masters, stepmills and rowing machines. The gym has free weights, and plenty of machines, benches, cables and squat racks. The area is well maintained and very clean and not overwhelmingly busy. If you mention reading this article on Hardbody, they will offer you a $5 day pass (normally $12).

Metro Fitness located on Long Street has been the well known gym to attend while at the Arnold. It is a true bodybuilding gym but does not offer the extensive amount of cardiovascular training and other equipment for figure, fitness and bikini competitors.

Urban Active in Grandview is about a five-ten minute drive and just opened a few months ago. They gym is nice and brand new! They have an indoor running tack as well and lap pool. There day passes are a bit more expensive if you do not already have an active membership.

TANNING
For those reading living in Florida or California… or any other with fabulous weather year round, you may find this section unnecessary or comical but for those living in the Midwest, you empathize with me!

Polo Tan, located at 585 S Front St, about a 3-5 minute drive from the Convention Center (also right by the Kroger Shopping Center) is the only place I recommend to go! There staff is exceptional and their beds are well maintained and clean. The best part is, if you mention this article, they will give you 20% off on tanning and lotions. They have 4 levels of tanning to include high pressure deep bronzing beds and 10 minute mega beds with face and shoulder tanners. They also provide airbrush tanning by Infinity Sun Custom Airbrush, which is by appointment only. If you are working a booth or doing a photo shoot, they can easily adjust your level of color and the service is top notch! If you need to make an appointment, you can call the salon at 614-628-0068.

They are open Mon-Thurs 10am – 9pm, Fri 10am – 8pm, Sat 9am – 6pm and Sun 11am – 5pm.

SUPPLEMENT STORES
Grandview Nutrition, 994 W 5th Avenue, is a locally owned supplement store and where I buy all of my supplements. They will price match anything online, and if you are going there for a particular item that you cannot get at the expo, call ahead and see if they have it in stock, 614-291-5590. If they do not have it, they can direct you where to go. There staff is very knowledgeable and very courteous.

PHOTO SHOOT CLOTHING
Last but not least, if you need any last minute photo shoot clothing, the best place to go for sexy items is The Garden (thegardencolumbus.net) located north of the Convention Center on High Street. They have lingerie, costumes and a variety of high heels and boots. If you are coming from the Convention Center, it is on the right, and you cannot miss the window display! There are a variety of other places to shop on High Street in the Short North, but for those items in particular, it is the best place to go.

Hopefully this information will make your trip to the Arnold Classic a little easier and more enjoyable. If there is something I missed or if you have other questions, please feel free to message me on Facebook at IFBB Pro Stephanie Billings.

Nicole Wilkins Figure International Title Defense

IFBB Figure Pro Nicole Wilkins was in attendance at the LA Fit Expo and was looking on point. She was there representing Met-RX and will be appearing with them again in Columbus. Nicole updates us with her prep as she looks to defend her Figure International title in just over 4 weeks.

Working the Fit Expo in LA was the first time I have traveled in a while… and I have to say onboard Wi-fi is the best thing ever! I get so much work done since I am forced to sit still for such a long period of time. I worked on Saturday and Sunday for my sponsor Met-RX and got to catch up with some people I hadn’t seen in a few months, which is always nice.

Things have been going great. Last weekend my trainer Kim Oddo came to Michigan and we trained together and went to the Detroit Auto show. Crazy to think I have lived here all my life and had never been before. The Motor City held up to its name – the cars were so amazing, I wanted them all! I posted a few of my favorites on my facebook page.

Nicole’s Birthday Car? lol

I have incorporated a lot of variety in my training over the last year. I do this because I think it is not only important to have strength and endurance, but also balance, flexibility, agility and coordination. In my DVD that (crossing my fingers) should be done by the Arnold, I show how I incorporate all different types of training into my program as I prepared for the Olympia last year. We actually filmed inside the yoga class and took the camera to gymnastics.

In Jan 2010, my goal was to start yoga, which I continue to do one-two times a week. This year I started doing Crossfit. I go to Motor City Crossfit (www.motorcitycrossfit.com) and they have been amazing. I LOVE the competition (not so much with myself but with others lol), the challenge, and feeling like my heart is going to pound out of my chest. My endurance is through the roof right now and it feels awesome!

For anyone who’s in the area and interested, I will be hosting my annual seminar in Flint, MI on Feb 20 this year. It is an informative seminar for those who have done a show before or are thinking of doing one in the future. It is a great way to meet other females who share the same passion. It is really nice to have that friendship and support! You can download the flyer on www.nicolewilkins.com or www.michiganfitnessshows.com.

That’s pretty much it for now, aside from my bday next weekend … 27 ain’t that old… 🙂

Less than Five weeks to go!

Nicole
