American Media Inc. Names Editorial Team

Congratulations to the new editorial staff at the Weider offices. A big shout out to Allan Donnelly who has been a positive voice for the women since he started with the publications. That’s not to say others haven’t but I’ve had the privilege of working with Allan since he came on board and witnessed his drive, initiative and passion for the industry. Props to the folks at AMI for recognizing the leadership Allan possesses. I don’t personally know Chris or Mike but I’m sure the mags are in good hands. We’ll see what if any changes take place with the new editorial staff.

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif., Oct 31, 2008 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ — David J. Pecker, Chairman and CEO of American Media, Inc.(AMI), today announced that Chris Lockwood, Mike Carlson, and Allan Donnelly have joined the editorial staffs at Muscle & Fitness, Flex and Muscle & Fitness Hers magazines, reporting to Laya Clark and Chris Scardino, Executive Vice Presidents & Co-Publishing Directors of AMI’s Enthusiast Group. Mr. Donnelly has been with Flex since 2006 and had been an editor for Men’s Fitness and a writer at Muscle & Fitness.

Mr. Clark said that he and Mr. Scardino are currently conducting a search for an editor-in-chief at Muscle & Fitness Hers who will report to Mr. Lockwood.

Sacramento IFBB Figure Pro Updates

Tomorrow the IFBB Figure pros will take the stage at 10am PST. The athlete’s meeting will take place in a few minutes at the host hotel. I got a sneak peak at some of the competitors this afternoon during a photo shoot that JM Manion was doing. This is going to be a great show. Returning champ, Michelle “Momma” Flake looks great and the time off looks to have helped streamline her a bit more. Newbies Kristin Nunn and Jamie Ford are also looking good and will have impressive pro debuts. Desha Rodriquez didn’t have her color on yet but looks sharp as did newcomer Karin Hawkins.

I’ll post a few photos and some video of the shoot later. Check back for more updates from Sacramento.

New Hardbody Feature: Chica’s Corner

chicascorner.jpg
Champion IFBB Pro Adela Garcia answers your questions.

IFBB Pro Adela “Chica” Garcia is seasoned veteran to the fitness scene. She’s a three Fitness Olympia Champion and Two-time Fitness International Champion. I’m pleased to announce she will be answering some of your questions here on hardbody.com in “Chica’s Corner”. If you have a question for the fitness diva please post it here or email her through her web site. Adela answers her first question, a topic that is fresh on her mind.

Hardbody.com Reader: I suffered an injury recently. How do you mentally get past it?

Adela: Patience is the key!

We must understand that we did not build our physiques and athleticism overnight and an injury is not going to heal itself overnight either. I am learning that patience is key to overcoming any injury. Being in a very competitive and demanding sport an injury can completely change your state of mind. You want to avoid the fact that you are injured and just push through the pain, but you have to remember that your body is in a healing state and needs the rest.

The most important thing to remember is to listen and trust your doctors and physical therapist. My sports medicine doctor told me,”child, you must learn how to walk, before you can run”. I have to look at the big picture and listen to my body and REST. Also, stay positive and keep believing in yourself. Nothing in life is easy and you can overcome anything in life as long as you put your heart to it.

Tune of the Day: Michael Jackson – Thriller

An obvious choice on this hallowed day… Michael Jackson’s cult classic Thriller. If you haven’t heard this song I don’t want to know what cave you’ve been hiding out in. 🙂 Below is a live performance of the song but nothing beats the original video. Apparently YOUTUBE won’t allow for it to be embedded but you can view it on their site.

New Hardbody Feature: Just Jenn

jenngates1.jpg
Ms. Figure Olympia Jennifer Gates

“Just Jenn” is a new feature to Hardbody.com. This section will provide insight, tips, pointers and more with current Ms. Figure Olympia Jennifer Gates. Jennifer still considers herself a newbie on the pro scene but her rise to the top didn’t happen overnight. Learn some of the things that helped make her one of the best figure competitors in the pro ranks. If you have a question for Jenn or would like her opinion on anything related to the fitness/figure industry you may do so on here or through her website, jenngates.com.

Hardbody.com Reader: I’m not a teenager any more and curious if you have any tips on how I can help my skin for a competition. I know diet and training but are there any products you’ve used that might help?

Jenn:
YES! I was just talking about this topic with a friend of mine. The best advice I can give you is to drink plenty of water and watch your diet. Try not to let your weight fluctuate from show to show. I also like to pamper myself with facials and massages. Also, don’t over do it with the tanning. There is one product I use the last couple weeks before competitions and photoshoots though. I use a product called Ab-Solution Plus and it definitely helps tighten up my skin, especially those stubborn areas around my abs and butt. Don’t rely on this to create any miracles but I do think it works.

Song of the Day: Augustana – Boston

The song “Boston” by Augustana is on my iTunes playlist. Give it a listen and maybe you’ll add it to yours. This is a pretty cool version from the House of Blues.

Photo of the Day: Jamie Ford

Jamie Ford has her eye on a successful pro debut.

Jamie Ford (formerly Costa) will make her IFBB figure debut this weekend at the Sacramento Pro. Does she have the look the judges are after? We’ll find out in a couple days but I wouldn’t bet against her.

Millionaires Out Muscle Fitness Enthusiasts

43107599.jpg
Fitness Buffs too loud in Santa Monica? Photo from LA Times.

“Droves of power walkers and joggers take to the steep wooden or concrete stairs that descend to Santa Monica Canyon, reveling in the superb canyon and ocean views. Nearby, the grassy medians along 4th Street are viewed as ideal al fresco gyms for personal trainers and clients wanting to buff up as ocean breezes caress their sweaty biceps.

Even the stair climbers have been known to lay mats on the sidewalks in front of multimillion-dollar Adelaide houses and do sets of ab crunches. Residents report that joggers also discard water bottles, urinate on people’s plants, occasionally scrawl graffiti and mill about in the narrow, curvy street, creating a hazard for themselves and driver.”

Only in a LA newspaper would a writer think to say, “ocean breezes caress their sweaty biceps.”  Apprently fitness buffs are causing quite a stir with their workouts. Check out the story in today’s Los Angeles Times. Anyone familiar with this area and have an opinion on the matter?

Photo of the Day: Canadian Castellas

This weekend Nadya Castellas will be competing at the IFBB Sacramento Figure Pro. She’s calls Canada home and her last competition was the Europa Supershow in Dallas, TX. This photo was taken the day after that competition and you can see what a little bit of sugar and some food does to bring a competitor’s veins out.

Tune of the Day: Garth Brooks – Much Too Young

I woke up this morning thinking, “I’m much too young to feel this damn old”. That’s why it’s today’s tune of the day. A little Garth Brooks never hurt anyone, right?

Brit Back to Buff?

Looks like Britney Spears is whipping herself back into shape with a personal trainer.

Does anyone really care?
Apparently they do. This video went up on her web site on Monday and has been the talk of the blogosphere.

Song of The Day: Seven Mary Three – Blue Letter

Seven Mary Three broke out in the 90s with their most popular song “Cumbersome“. I jammed out to these guys in college and once played pool with them in Omaha, Nebraska. I ran across this acoustic version of their song Blue Letter, where lead singer Jason Ross rocks it in a music store. Good stuff.

Debra Gets it Dunn

NPC competitor, Debra Dunn was recently interviewed by jdnews.com. The 47 year-old Figure competitor is preparing to compete at next month’s NPC National Figure contest.

She shares some insight with readers:

As far as her diet, Debra believes that eating healthier shouldn’t be viewed as a punishment.

“Think of it as a lifestyle instead of a diet,” she said.

Words to live by. Check out the entire interview with Debra here. Best of Luck Debra!

Paola Almerico getting some International Love

paola.jpg
IFBB Figure Pro Paola Almerico.

Miami resident, Paola Almerico is highlighted on vientodelsur.com.ar. I’m not great at translating but for those of you who can decipher Spanish, check it out. I believe they talk about her training, being a mother, living in Florida and what it is like to be invited to the Arnold Classic.

Debbie Leung’s Spice of Gym Life

IFBB Figure Pro Debbie Leung is featured in today’s Edmonton Sun. The article talks about how Debbie keeps things interesting with her workouts. She’s one of Canada’s most popular comeptitors and does a great job of keeping her name out there.

Although bodybuilding has been a big part of her life for the past eight years, Leung – who ran track in her younger years – isn’t afraid to give new sports a go.

She tried skeleton (similar to bobsled and luge) for a year, has her yellow belt in judo and recently took up Aussie rules football with the Calgary Kookaburras.

“I’m always up for trying new sports. If I like them, I stick around,” she says. “I don’t necessarily get bored. I just like to keep things a little bit more interesting.”

Congrats on the exposure and keep up the good work. Read the full article here.

Tampa Bay Rising Star: IFBB Figure Pro Kristin Nunn

Kristin Nunn will make her pro debut in just a few days at the IFBB Sacramento Pro. Wasting no time promoting herself, she’s featured as one of Tampa Bay’s Young Professional Rising Stars. Congrats Kristin and good luck this weekend in Sacramento.

Photo of the Day: Sarah Hayes

I posted an image of a “Mystery Woman” back in July and she’s remained unidentifed, until now. Ya, I know I could of let you in on the secret a little earlier. My bad. The mystery woman is NPC competitor, Sarah Hayes. The 31 year old female bodybuilder has tremendous potential. Sarah recently relocated to Dallas, Texas.

Song of the Day: Rihanna Disturbia

Yes, I admit it. I like Rihanna‘s new song Disturbia. It’s not the most earth shattering tune with lyrics like, “Bum bum be-dum bum bum be-dum bum” but it’s a catchy little number non-the-less. Sometimes songs like this are good for a little morning cardio when you don’t want to think. There are over 10 remixes of this song on itunes.

Pauline Nordin’s Fighter Diet

Pauline Nordin has never been accused of being weak, mentally or physically. She’s now putting that mentality to good use in a kick ass new program called Fighter Diet. Her new blog describes the diet philosophy as:

My diet philosophy was not based upon what fighters in general keep in their diets. My philosophy has more to do with the mental outlook of professional fighters, the way they must push, push, push to the limit, face their fierce in the cage, persevere endless grueling workouts. And this while making weight needed for the battle in the ring… Fighters see beyond the moment being in order to persevere and win titles and belts. No instant satisfaction, only loyal and honest dedication will lead them to victory.

She’ll be blogging regularly on her site and will include videos as well. Check out the newest video of her knocking out a set on the incline bench:
