MOTIVATION – A Hardbody Takes Work

If you want a HARDBODY you’re going to have to work. It won’t be easy but it will be worth it. It’s starts with believing  you CAN and knowing you WILL. You CAN do it. You Will do it. Visualize it. Today is the perfect day to set new goals. Remember this poem by Walter Wintle, “Whether you think you can or you can’t you’re probably right”.

hard work

WHETHER YOU THINK YOU CAN OR YOU CAN’T YOU ARE PROBABLY RIGHT
If you think you are beaten, you are
If you think you dare not, you don’t,
If you like to win, but you think you can’t
It is almost certain you won’t.

If you think you’ll lose, you’re lost
For out of the world we find,
Success begins with a fellow’s will
It’s all in the state of mind.

If you think you are outclassed, you are
You’ve got to think high to rise,
You’ve got to be sure of yourself before
You can ever win a prize.

Life’s battles don’t always go
To the stronger or faster man,
But soon or late the man who wins
Is the man WHO THINKS HE CAN!

- Walter D. Wintle

Chances are you’ll want to because there are so many awesome messages in it. Cindy talks about how she came up with “Girl is NOT a 4 Letter word”, became a sponsored pro skateboarder and even skated down the 405 Freeway not that long ago.

“Live life balls to the wall. Do epic shit. Take every dare that comes your way. You can sleep when you’re dead”. This is the personal motto of Cindy Whitehead.

She conquered the male dominated profession of pro vert skateboarding in the 70′s, and quickly became one of the top ranked professional female vert skateboarders in the U.S. for pool riding and half-pipe. To this day, Cindy still holds the distinction of being the only female to be featured in the centerfold plus a two-page article in a skateboarding magazine, and is the only female skateboarder to have been sponsored by Puma.

Since then, Cindy has gone on to coin the term “Sports Stylist®,” working as a fashion stylist specializing in sports, with companies like Gatorade, Nike, the NBA,and athletes such as Tiger Woods, Kobe Bryant and Mia Hamm.

Last year she made national headlines by skateboarding down the closed 405 freeway in Los Angeles. In June of 2013 Cindy flew to Washington, DC to sign over some of her skateboard history to The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History’s sports collections.

Cindy has been profiled in magazines and sites such as, ESPN, The Huffington Post, & Women’s Wear Daily, and has appeared on numerous TV and radio shows. She most recently spoke in Washington, DC at The Smithsonian Museum’s Innoskate event.

Her catchphrase “Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word” has become a battle cry for girls worldwide.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Morning Motivation: Nike ‘Rise and Shine’ – Find Your Greatness

If you’re looking for a little morning motivation look no further than this video. If this doesn’t get you pumped to kick some ass today we don’t know what will. Nike’s ‘Rise and Shine’ video is simply awesome.

rise and shine

Welcome to the grind. We’ve got work to do.

RISE AND SHINE
6am and your hand can’t make it to the alarm clock before the voices in your head start telling you that it’s too early, too dark and too cold to get out of a bed.
Aching muscles lie still in rebellion, pretending not to hear your brain commanding them to move.
A legion of voices are shouting their unanimous permission for you to hit the snooze button and go back to dreamland.
But you didn’t ask their opinion.
The voice you’ve chosen to listen to is one of defiance.
A voice that’s says there was a reason you set that alarm in the first place.
So sit up, put your feet on the floor, and don’t look back because we’ve got work to do.

Welcome to The Grind!

For what is each day but a series of conflicts between the right way and the easy way.
10,000 streams fan out like a river delta before you, each one promising the path of least resistance.
Thing is, you’re headed upstream.
And when you make that choice, when you decide to turn your back on what’s comfortable and what’s safe and what some would call “common sense”, well that’s day 1.
From there it only gets tougher.
So just make sure this is something you want.
Because the easy way out will always be there, ready to wash you away.

All you have to do is pick up your feet.

But you aren’t going to are you?
With each step comes the decision to take another.
You’re on your way now But this is no time to dwell on how far you’ve come.
You’re in a fight against an opponent you can’t see.
Oh but you can feel him on your heels can’t ya?
Feel him breathing down your neck
You know what that is?
That’s you…
Your fears, your doubts and insecurities all lined up like a firing squad ready to shoot you out of the sky.

But don’t lose heart.
While they aren’t easily defeated, they are far from invincible.

Remember this is The Grind.
The Battle Royale between you and your mind, your body and the devil on your shoulder who’s telling you that this is just a game, this is just a waste of time, your opponents are stronger than you.

Drown out the voice of uncertainty with the sound of your own heartbeat
Burn away your self doubt with the fire that’s beneath you.
Remember what you’re fighting for.
And never forget that momentum is a cruel mistress.
She can turn on a dime with the smallest mistake.
She is ever searching for that weak place in your armor.
That one tiny thing you forgot to prepare for.

So as long as the devil is hiding the details, the question remains, “is that all you got?”… “are you sure?”
And when the answer is “yes”; When you’ve done all you can to prepare yourself for battle then it’s time to go forth and boldly face your enemy, the enemy within.

Only now you must take that fight into the open, into hostile territory.
You’re a lion in a field of lions.
All hunting the same elusive prey with a desperate starvation that says VICTORY is the only thing that can keep you alive.
So believe that voice that says “you CAN run a little faster” and “you CAN throw a little harder” and that, for you, the laws of physics are merely a suggestion.

Luck is the last dying wish of those who want to believe that winning can happen by accident.
Sweat on the other hand is for those who know it’s a choice.
So decide now because destiny waits for no man.
And when your time comes and a thousand different voices are trying to tell you
you’re not ready for it,
listen instead to that lone voice of descent,
that one that says:
you are ready
you are prepared

It’s all up to you now.

So Rise and Shine.

Training Video – Erin Stern’s Glute Bridges

Erin Stern is known for having one of the most athletic physiques in the IFBB Pro League. She’s been on a variety of magazine covers and stood in the winner’s circle a number of times. In this video she demonstrates an exercise that may take some practice but once you get the hang of it you can work your way up in weight.

Erin Stern Training

Erin shared, “New PR tonight – 365lbs! Train hard, y’all!!” Recently on her Facebook page the champ posted some food for thought… “Something NEAT to think about: instead of cutting calories, try increasing the intensity of your workouts. Often, when we “diet,” our NEAT (non-exercise activity thermogenesis) decreases. This means that our bodies have a way of compensating for the decrease in calories – by becoming more sedentary. The solution: train harder and eat enough clean foods.”

P&G Thank You Mom – Raising an Olympian: Amy Purdy

“Love life. Have confidence in yourself.” Simple advice but convincingly true. Those word of wisdom were what what Amy Purdy’s mother shared with her. Amy is a paralympic snowboarder and the feature of this moving video. Proctor & Gamble does a great job with their “Thank You Mom” campaign. You might remember this campaign from the Summer Olympics. It’s one that never gets old and helps to tell the story of not only athletes but also their moms.

Amy shared this on Facebook after seeing the video, “Wow this turned out amazing and brought me to tears! ‪#‎thankyoumom‬ for being so loving and supportive all the wonderful things you shared in this video brought me to tears! This reminds me of how far I have come! I am who I am ‪#‎becauseofmymom‬.”

Athletes Eat and Train, They Don’t Diet & Exercise

If you’re active and making an effort to be the best version of you, then we applaud you. One thing to think about with your approach to tackling those New Years’ resolutions is a shift in focus. Instead of looking at it as diet and exercise, tackle it like an athlete. Athletes eat and train, they don’t diet and exercise.

athletes eat and train, not diet and exercise

Your body is one thing you control. Determine what you’re training for and then eat accordingly. A marathon runner isn’t going to eat the same way as a powerlifter. Think about it. Change your mindset. A shift in your thinking and your approach will help motivate you year-round.

Hardbody Motivation: Open Doors

It’s a new year and a perfect opportunity to rethink your approach to all areas in your life. A simple quote can often help shift your thinking and this one by Alexander Graham Bell got our wheels turning…”Sometimes we stare so long at a door that is closing that we see too late the one that is open.”

Instead of focusing on what happened in 2013 too much look to what is in front of you this year. Featured in this Hardbody Motivation graphic is rookie IFBB Pro, Janet Layug. She was the winner of the FLEX Bikini Model Search and the 2013 NPC Nationals overall bikini winner. In just a few weeks she’ll make her pro debut at the Arnold in Columbus, Ohio. Video: Gretchen Bleiler’s Remarkable Recovery

Gretchen Bleiler is one of the top female snowboarders in the world. Over the weekend she finished in third at the U.S. Grand Prix in Copper Mtn., Colorado. Impressive by any standard but what makes her podium appearance an even bigger deal is the challenges she’s overcome.

gretch-bleiler

Xgames.com recently published a video
in conjunction with Muscle Milk (one of Gretchen’s sponsors) that tells Gretchen’s remarkable story. While warming up she suffered a broken eye-socket, broken nose and a concussion. A number of people thought this would be a career ending injury for her but she wouldn’t hear any of that. As a pro athlete, Gretchen felt there was a way to get better.

When traditional eye exercises didn’t work, Gretchen and her team created their own program. The experimental technique combines ocular rehabilitation with high-intensity strength training and conditioning. Gretchen combined physical activity while focusing on a single point. Check out how Gretchen pushed herself and got back on a snowboard. She’s got her sights set on the Sochi Winter Olympics, which she says could be her last Games.

When doctors said she wouldn’t make a full recovery from a devastating eye injury, Gretchen Bleiler created an eye-strengthening training program that had never been done before and beat the odds.

Gretchen says, “I see the Olympics as this opportunity to get better, push harder and do things you never thought you could do.” We’re not all Olympic athletes but Gretchen’s story reminds us to never give up and keep pushing through adversity.

Follow Gretchen on twitter @GretchenBleiler and use #giveMestrength in your tweets to show your support. Props to Gretchen, Xgames.com and Muscle Milk for sharing this story.

Video: Battle of the Moms

Love your body. Something we can all agree on, right? We like to think so. Two mothers, both with three children, are taking to the internet to get their message across but in different ways. One mother in Australia posted her post-baby photos to show a “more realistic” look to her body after Maria Kang made headlines over a photo.

mom battle

Maria posted a photo with her and her three children that simply said, “What’s Your Excuse.” It was simply an attempt to inspire other women but she received numerous negative comments and claims that she was “shaming” other mothers to look a certain way.

“Health is not dictated by someone’s look, their size or their weight,” say the Aussie mother and we can certainly agree with that but why is one mother right and the other is wrong?

You can love your body before and after.

Reporter: Her photos are drawing comparisons to maria kang, the mom of three, whose what’s your excuse photo caption, led to a firestorm of reactions, with many accusing her of fat shaming. I’m not a bully.

Reporter: She is now speaking out against kang, saying these ideals are unrealistic and unhealthy. And wants to encourage women to love their bodies at any size. Health is not dictated by someone’s looks, their size or their weight.

But kang says she is simply a healthy mom, trying to be a positive role model. Is there a right or wrong answer in this great mom debate? We have to be careful in our society not to characterize something as normal or not normal.
