Record-Breaking Rocky – 2014 NPC Rocky Mountain Championships

2014 NPC ROCKYThe 2014 NPC Colorado season will come to a close this weekend in Golden, Colorado. Show promoter, Jeff Taylor shared that this will be the largest NPC show in Colorado history. The final count won’t be in until late Friday night but over 400 competitors will compete in bodybuilding, fitness, figure, bikini and physique.

I expect the biggest turn out to be in the Bikini and Men’s Physique divisions. The two divisions are the newest and have experienced the most growth since their inception. This year’s event will have veteran maestro of the microphone, Bob Cicherillo calling the action. Let’s hope the Bobster brings some warmer temps to The Mile High City, as the thermometer currently reads a whopping 10 degrees.

SHOW PREVIEW: 2014 NPC Music City Muscle Classic

NPC Music City Nashville

The 2014 NPC Music City Muscle competition will take place on November 1, 2014 in Nashville, Tennessee. I’ve covered hundreds of events over the last 10 years and without a doubt this is one of the best shows in the USA. Promoters Brandy Leaver and Brandon Curry do a tremendous job from start to finish and provide the competitors with an unforgettable experience. They’re both IFBB Pros and they’ve “been there done that” as competitors and I think that plays into their show. Brandy’s passion showed last year when she was running the event at 9 months pregnant, yes she was due at any time. Brandon gave local fans a rare glimpse at his stage ready physique by guest posing. He won the inaugural Arnold Classic Brasil and had just competed at the Olympia.

The venue is one of the best you’ll find for any event, amateur or pro. Last year the event sold out in the Polk Theatre and this year they’ve moved to the Andrew JacksonHall in the Tennessee Performing Arts Center. The place is awesome and has three levels of seating. A backstage that is the size of a football field and a pump up room that is the size of a gymnasium. Competitors will be spoiled after competing on this stage because there are few shows that have anything like it.

I caught up with Brandy for a bit more info on the event in a quick Q&A:

HARDBODY (HB): How many years have you promoted this show?
BRANDY LEAVER (BL):This is our 4th year!

HB: Any women who have competed in the show and turned pro?
BL: Yes, Hanna Hallman went pro just a couple of weeks after competing in our show last year. Ecko Johnson was just 1 spot away from earning her pro status 2 years ago after winning our show.

HB: Numbers expected this year vs the first year?
BL: Our first year we had 96 total, and this year we are hoping to hit the 400 mark! We are already past 300 in pre registration! (not to mention we are still a non National Qualifier! That is, until next year! Woohoo!)

HB: Venue change?
BL: Same building, but this year we are going into a bigger theatre in the Tennessee Performing Arts Center. Our old theatre held around 1500 people and we sold the last ticket at finals just 7 minutes after opening the doors last year and had to turn a lot of people away. So this year we were ready for the big one and are heading into the Andrew Jackson Hall which seats 2500 spectators. It’s just beautiful.

HB: What separates your show from others?
BL: Brandon and I wanted to put on a show that focused on the competitors, not ourselves. To be honest a lot of people know the show but they don’t realize that we run it. And we are cool with that! We create a positive environment for competitors backstage and even have a good old homemade Red Velvet Cake waiting for them the second they get off stage at the Finals! I think people like to do our show because we care about the competitors and make them feel comfortable no matter their age, or if it’s their first time competing or if they are a very experienced competitor. We have people competing from ages 16-76! Last year we even had a BLIND woman compete and she placed in the top 5! It’s inspiring and it’s all positive! We want people to celebrate and feel rewarded for the journey that they have been on. Not everyone will become an IFBB Pro but I want to give everyone a place to be able to compete comfortably and be satisfied with themselves no matter what the outcome. It’s a show for everyone to have a good time!

We also like to make it entertaining for spectators. We run it as a production during the Finals so it’s not just an award show! We have such an amazing venue, why not take it all the way! LOL! A lot of people come to the show that have never been to a Bodybuilding event before so we try to entertain them too!

History of Figure & Bikini Overall NPC Nationals Champions

This weekend close to 900 competitors will head to Florida for the 2013 NPC Nationals. The majority of those competitors will be women in the bikini and figure divisions. The Figure division dates back to 2001 when Davana Medina was awarded pro status. The Bikini division was introduced to the NPC Nationals in 2009 where Jessica Anderson was awarded the top prize. There are more pro cards are awarded now (the top two in each class) but there are also more competitors than the early days. Achieving pro status is clearly the goal but having the title of “Overall NPC Nationals Champion” is something bestowed only one in each division.

npc-nationals

FIGURE
The Figure division has awarded pro status since 2001. When you look back on the overall winners from NPC Nationals Figure you see a number of familiar names. If you want to win the Figure Olympia, your best chance is to be a NPC Nationals overall winner. There have only been five women to win the Figure Olympia since its inception in 2003. Three of the five were NPC Nationals overall champions. Davana Medina was awarded the first pro card in the Figure division and went on to win the Olympia three times. While she was awarded pro status in 2001 it wasn’t until 2003 that the pro division adapted the new division for the Olympia stage. Kristy Robbins took top honors in 2002 and competed in a handful of shows before hanging up her heels in 2004. She returned to the stage in 2011 but competed in the Bikini division. Amber Littlejohn took the title in 2003 and had a relatively successful figure career. She debuted at the Arnold Classic in 10th place but that would be her lowest placing as a pro. She was known for having crazy delts and an unique, exotic look. Amber was the runner-up at the 2006 Olympia, her highest finish.

Mary Lado may not have won the Olympia when she competed but she had a successful career on stage and appeared in numerous fitness magazines. She never finished out of the top ten as a pro and won the Arnold Classic twice. Mary was the 2004 overall figure winner.  The 2005 winner, Danielle Hollenshade had a career high third place finish at the 2006 Sacramento Pro. She competed at the Olympia once and we haven’t seen her on stage since 2007.  Sonia Adcock (Gonzeles) won the 2006 NPC Nationals and while she didn’t win the Olympia in Figure she did go on to win the inaugural Bikini Olympia in 2010. Sonia recently stepped away from the stage and is a new mom. Nicole Wilkins was the first and last woman to win the overall in not only the Fitness division but also the Figure division, in the same show. Nicole has gone on to have one of the best careers and arguable the best Figure competitor of all-time.  She debuted in 11th place at the 2008 Arnold but since then has won the show three times. She recently took home her third Olympia title. The 2008 overall champion is another familiar name to those who follow the Figure division. Erin Stern earned her pro status at the 2008 NPC Nationals and since then has become one of the best Figure competitors in history. She debuted in 10th place at the Arnold Classic but has never finished that low since. It’s rare that someone never finishes out of the top ten in the pros. You have to go all the way back to 2009 to find a show that Erin has been out of the top three. She’s won the Olympia twice (2010 and 2012) and without question one of the most successful overall Figure Nationals champions.

Mindi Smith burst onto the scene in 2009 by winning the overall NPC Sacramento Figure title. She followed it up with a win at the 2009 NPC Nationals, beating out fan favorite Ava Cowan for the overall. She won the 2010 Phoenix Pro and finished 4th at the Arnold Classic that same year. We haven’t seen Mindi on stage since 2010 and doubtful we ever will again. Monica Specking showed tremendous promise when she won the 2010 NPC Nationals overall title and has been on a roller coaster with her placings ever since. She won the 2012 Optimum Classic and finished fifth in the 2013 New York Pro. Monica can typically hang in the top ten with a smaller show but when it comes to the Arnold and Olympia she was at the bottom of the pack.  She’s competed at the Olympia twice and Arnold once, so she’s far from a slouch when it comes to her competition history.

The last two years have proven to be a struggle for the overall champs. Julie Mayer-Hyman was the 2011 champion and finally found her groove late this year as a pro. She was second at the 2013 Dallas Europa and fifth at the Tahoe Pro. Outside of those two shows, Julie struggled to make the top spots. Nicole Sims showed tremendous promise when she took home the crown in 2012 but has yet to find her groove in the pro ranks. She debuted at the Arnold and ended up in 14th place. Nicole has yet to finish better than 10th in the pro ranks.

BIKINI
The fifth overall bikini crown will be awarded this weekend. When we look back at the previous overall winners it’s Jennifer Andrews who has the best competition resume. She’s the only overall Nationals’ champion who has gone not only won a pro show but also compete on the Olympia stage. Last year’s winner, Angela Skeels has competed in six IFBB Pro shows but only been able to crack the top five once. The 2011 Champion, Candy Agundez only competed once as a pro and missed the top five. Jennifer took top honors at the 2010 NPC Nationals and has competed in over a dozen shows since achieving pro status. She has four pro victories, competed at the Olympia twice and is already qualified for the 2014 Olympia with her win at the Ft. Lauderdale Cup. Jessica Anderson competed a couple of times as a pro but as a member of the US Military her schedule never really allowed for it. She recently had her first child and is busy being a new mom.

2013 NPC Team Universe Preview

This weekend the NPC Team Universe & Nationals Fitness Championships will be held in Teaneck, New Jersey. The two-day event will crown sixty new IFBB Pros in bodybuilding, fitness, figure, bikini, women’s and men’s physique.

team-universe
The women’s bodybuilding division was dropped from this year’s event however that won’t hurt the number of entrants for this show. The Team Universe is one of the largest NPC shows of the year and a few winners tend to make an immediate impact in the pro league. Two winners from the 2012 class are great examples.  The overall bikini champion, Ashley Kaltwasser found her groove after finishing 10th at this year’s Arnold. She’s earned two victories and will be competing at the Olympia where she could finish in top spots. Natalie Planes took top honors in her pro fitness debut at the Pro World Championship. Who will lead the way out of this year’s graduating class? We’ll find out this weekend in New Jersey.

Use the hashtag #TeamU on your social media posts. This will help everyone follow the action around the event. Good luck to everyone competing and for complete coverage visit npcnewsonline.com.

PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA (January 30, 2013) – The National Physique Committee and Gaspari Nutrition have named Michael VanLeeuwen, Rene Marven, Corinna Booth, Maura Bouchard, Gerald Pressley, Ginger Martin and Kristine Duba Athletes of the Month for the month of October.

Each month, NPC President Jim Manion selects the Athletes of the Month in each of the organization’s seven divisions – Men’s and Women’s Bodybuilding, Figure, Bikini, Fitness and Men’s and Women’s Physique – based on in-person analysis and on the information provided by contest promoters across the country and featured in the NPC News Online Contest Roundups.

For complete profiles and galleries of the October NPC Athletes of the month, go to www.npcnewsonline.com.

About the October Athletes of the Month:

– Men’s Bodybuilding: Michael VanLeeuwen, 32, competed in his first NPC contest as a teenager in 1999. After a 10-year break, VanLeeuwen returned to the stage this year and won two Overall titles in October at the Dexter Jackson Memphis Classic and the Music City Championships.

– Women’s Bodybuilding: Rene Marven, 26, won the Middleweight division and Overall at the New York Grand Prix, giving her three straight class wins in her first three NPC contests dating back to 2011. In November, Marven kept that streak alive by winning her class and a pro card at the NPC Nationals.

– Figure: Former military police officer Corinna Booth won her class and the Overall at the Ft. Lauderdale Championships. Booth, a single mother and full-time nursing student, also won her pro card this past November at the NPC Nationals.

– Bikini: Brazilian-born Maura Bouchard won her class and the Overall at the Ft. Lauderdale Championships. Bouchard, 25, won Overall titles in four of her six NPC contests since she started competing in 2011.

– Men’s Physique: Gerald Pressley, 32, ran track and field at the University of South Carolina and was an All-American on the Gamecocks 4×400 meter relay team in 2001. Pressley won his class and the Overall at the Texas State Championships in his second Men’s Physique competition.

– Women’s Physique: Ginger Martin’s NPC career started in 2004, and the 43-year-old mother of three competed in both Figure and Women’s Bodybuilding before finally finding a home in the Women’s Physique division last year. In October, Martin won her class and the Overall at the Texas State Championships.

– Fitness: Kristine Duba, 26, took a four-year break from fitness competitions, but returned with a vengeance this year by winning three Overall tittles in two contests, including the Fitness and Figure Overall at the Washington State Championships in October.

2012 NPC Eastern USA Championships Rescheduled

The 2012 NPC Eastern USA Championships scheduled to take place on November 3, 2012 has been rescheduled to November 18. Due to hurricane Sandy the show had to be rescheduled despite the promoters best efforts to hold the show this weekend.

2012 easterns rescheduled

ANNOUNCEMENT:

via npcnewsonline.com

Despite our best efforts, we are unable to hold the Eastern USA Championships on November 3. But the SHOW WILL GO ON. The event has been RESCHEDULED for SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 18 at the Tribecca Performing Arts Center (same location).

For details keep checking www.bevfrancis.com

Downtown New York City has suffered unprecedented damage from Hurricane Sandy and the Tribecca Performing Arts Center is closed for repairs. The damaged venue along with the persistent transportation shut downs and delays makes it unfeasible to hold a contest on November 3 that would meet the high standard of the Eastern USA.

So on November 18, we will deliver top-notch venue, extraordinary staff, expert judging, and unrivaled competition you’ve come to expect the NPC New York. Along with something more!

Rescheduling the contest has allowed us to add a one-time special event: THE NEW YORK PRO SEMINAR featuring Mr. Olympia Phil Heath. Immediately following the Eastern USA pre-judging, Heath will be on stage to discuss training, nutrition, supplements, and even answer questions from the audience!

If that isn’t enough, joining Mr. Olympia on stage will be Pro Figure star Ava Cowan, Bikini Champion India Paulino, 3x Olympia 202 Champion Kevin English, Team Bombshell’s Shannon Dey, and IFBB Pros Juan Morel, Marco Rivera, Jon De La Rosa, & more!

We appreciate your understanding and continued support and we hope to see you on November 18!

Hardbody Preview: 2012 NPC USA Championships

Over 800 competitors will take the stage this weekend at the 2012 NPC USA Bodybuilding, Bikini, Figure and Physique Championships. This will be the biggest turnout in the show’s 30-year history. The action starts at high noon on Friday, July 27th at UNLV’s Artemis Hall in Las Vegas, NV.

npc usa preview las vegas

A record number of pro cards (53) for this event will be awarded on Saturday night. Prejudging for Friday will start with Men’s Bodybuilding followed by Women’s Bodybuilding, Women’s Physique and ending on Bikini. Saturday’s prejudging will showcase Men’s Physique and Figure at 9am. The finals begin 5:30pm for all events.

Last year Wendy Fortino took home top honors in the Figure division and Talia Terese was the leading lady in the bikini division. This will be the second year that the NPC USAs features Women’s Physique. Last year’s overall winners have yet to make an impact in the pro ranks however other pro card winners have made their mark. Brittany Tacy, winner of the C class last year, won her first bikini pro show at the Greater Gulf States earlier this year and will head to the Olympia in September. Jami DeBenard will also be competing in the Olympia this year in the Figure division. She was last year’s D class winner.

Who will be the ones to watch this year? There are a number of women who could turn pro. I like Kalani Barber’s look and chances at a win in Figure. She was second to Tamara Montoya last year and one to watch this year. Another Figure competitor who has a winning look is Phannary Pen from Modesto, California. Dawn Hinz has consistently been in the top spots in the Figure F class and another who should make her mark this weekend. The Colorado State Figure Champion, Stephanie Spencer has a chance to leave a pro if she comes in just a bit tighter than her overall win earlier this month in Denver, Colorado. California State Champ, Francine Sablan has a nice look and should also be in the mix. Dani Freitas Ronquilio has been close a number of times to a pro card but comes up just short. Look for her to be a contender for a pro card.

In the Bikini division it is up in the air as so many of these women have won a show and done very well on the regional level. Who will step up to the plate at this Pro Qualifier? Look for Noy Alexander to take home gold in her backyard. The current Vegas resident has come close a number of times and many felt could have won her class at the JR. Nationals with no one complaining about it. Ashley Cronley LeBlanc has been on the way up and coming off an overall win at the Greater Gulf States. She has a good look and the potential to win not only her class but the overall here. Amy Allen and Shannon Martinez are two who could take home pro cards. They’ve held their own on the national stage before and will have a solid chance at leaving pros. Former NFL cheerleader, Lisa Perry could be in the hunt if she brings better conditioning then she displayed at the Jr. Nationals. The 2012 Emerald Cup overall Bikini winner Paola Terry will look to move back into the winner’s circle and could do so here. She showed potential at the Team Universe event earlier this month.

Keep an eye on Laura Gutilla and Jill Rudison to make some noise in the Women’s Physique division. If Antonia Perdikakis can dial in her legs a bit tighter she could be in the hunt for the top spots in her class. LaDawn McDay and Alyssa Stroud could battle it out in the heavyweight division of female bodybuilding with the winner likely leaving the overall champ. If Christine Sabo comes in a bit tighter than her last outing she too could leave with IFBB Pro Status.

IFBB WOMEN PRO STATUS AWARDED:
Top 2 Placers in the Overall of Women’s Bodybuilding (4 Weight Classes)
Open Figure the Top 2 in each Height Class (6 Height Classes)
Open Bikini the Top 2 in each Height Class (6 Height Classes)
Women’s Physique the Top 2 in each Height Class (4 Height Classes)

NPC Team Universe & Fitness Nationals Preview

This weekend nearly 500 competitors will take the stage at the 2012 Team Universe / Fitness Nationals in Teaneck, NJ. The events will also showcase a number of Masters Divisions and look for close to 100 competitors cross over from the Open to Masters events.

A total of 55 IFBB Pro cards will be awarded on Saturday night. The bulk of those pro cards coming in the women’s events. NPCNEWSonline.com broke down the pro cards by division.

– Open Men’s Bodybuilding Overall winner – 1
– Open Women’s Bodybuilding Overall winner – 1
– Master’s Men’s Bodybuilding Over 35, Over 45 and Over 55 Overall winners – 3
– Master’s Women’s Bodybuilding Over 35 and Over 45 Overall winners – 2
– Open Figure Top 2 in each Height Class (6 Height Classes) – 12
– Masters Figure Over 35 and Over 45 Overall winners – 2
– Open Bikini Top 2 in each Height Class (6 Height Classes) – 12
– Masters Bikini Over 35 Overall Winner – 1
– Men’s Physique Top 2 in each Height Class (3 Height Classes) – 6
– Women’s Physique Top 3 in each Height Class (3 Height Classes) – 9
– Women’s Fitness Top 2 in each Height Class (3 Height Classes) – 6

The overall winners will be eligible to compete on the USA TEAM at the 2012 World Championships. While we don’t have the final competitor lists as of yet, here’s a few competitors to watch.  These are just a few names that could be contenders, there’s clearly more to add to the list, in all divisions.

BIKINI:
Danielle Carr was 6th at this show last year and will look to move up into the top five this time around. Nola June has been up and down in the placings and if she comes in on point she can be a contender here. Kate Fishler was on top of her game at the NPC JR Nationals but slipped a bit at the Jr. Nationals. She has stunning good looks and wouldn’t bet against her finishing in the top two of her class. One who will definitely be a fan favorite is Denise Milani. Denise has built a huge online following and if she brings a better cut suit to this stage than her last NPC outing she could be a contender here. Maureen Doherty from Temecula, CA is one to watch in the open and in the 35 and over class. Paola Terry will make the trip to from Anchorage, Alaska and could be a leading lady in this show. She took top honors at the 2012 Emerald Cup earlier this year. Adrienne Crenshaw has been oh so close this year placing second at both the NPC Jr USA and NPC Jr Nationals this year. She’ll look to take a pro card home to Texas on Saturday night. Another Texan to keep an eye on is Siliana Gaspard. She took top honors at the 2011 NPC Texas and was third at the 2011 North Americans. If she brings the look she has to past shows, she’ll leave with a pro card.

FIGURE:
The Figure competition will be stacked in every class. Krista Dunn returns to the stage looking to crack the top spots. The Colorado girl has been consistently at the top in each of her National shows. Michelle Beck will make a return to the stage and if she comes in tight without being too hard, she could be a top contender in the tall class. Victoria Adelus was fifth in her class at last year’s Team U. She’ll hope to move into the top two spots this weekend. She was second at this year’s Emerald Cup held in April. Corinna Booth as the queen of the 2011 Ft. Lauderdale Cup and took second at this year’s New York Mets. Look for her to be a contender in her class. Patty Zariello has been knocking on a pro card’s door several times but came up just short. Look for her to do well and potentially leave with IFBB Pro status on Saturday night. Amy Puglise knows all to what what it’s like to be close to a pro card. She was second at the 2011 NPC Nationals and runner up at the 2012 NPC Jr Nationals. Another figure competitor who knows what it’s like to be in the top five but just miss out on turning pro is Michelle DeRosa. Michelle was third at the 2011 NPC Nationals and 4th at this year’s NPC JR USA. Kelly Booth Hater was second at the 2012 NPC JR Nationals B Class. She’ll look to match or surpass that here and leave a pro.

BODYBUILDING:
If things continue to go the way they have, look for the women’s bodybuilding numbers to be the lowest of all the divisions this weekend. Look for three women to be battling for the top spots and they could all face off in the Master’s division. Gail Auerbach, Michelle Brent and Christine Sabo. All three women have been at the top of t heir game before and if they bring their best here they could leave with IFBB Pro status. Sabo has the most potential of the group and if she’s on point she could leave your overall champ.

FITNESS:
The Fitness division should see decent numbers given that it’s the NPC Fitness Nationals and the top two in each of the three height classes achieve IFBB Pro status.  I look for around 30 competitors to enter this weekend’s event. A couple familiar names to the Fitness stage are Babette Mulford and Lisha Dean. Both women have come close to turning pro a number of times. I can’t see Babette leaving Jersey still an amateur if she brings the same thing she did to Jr Nationals. Lisha starts strong and tends to get a little winded mid-way through her routine. If she can keep her energy high through out the routine and come in just a bit tighter, she could leave with pro status. Alexis Paige showed potential in her Fitness debut in Chicago. If she speeds up her routine a bit and has some more strength moves she could do well. Ashley Sebera is knocking on the door to pro status as well. The Ohio girl has been moving up in the ranks this year and finished third at the NPC JR Nationals. Look for her to be a contender here. There will be a number of others that could leave with pro status and ultimately the best combo of a routine and physique should prevail.

WOMEN’S PHYSIQUE:
There are three pro cards up for grabs in each of the three height classes and this division has been blowing up as the year progresses. Nine women will leave with IFBB Pro status so you can bet this division will be packed once again. You have to figure Rachel Baker is one of the odds on favorites to leave a pro and potentially win the whole show. She’s come close on a number of occasions and definitely has the look of the division. Tony Perdikakis will look to come in a bit tighter in the legs than she was at the Greater Gulf States and try her hand at a division. Andrea Holliday will also be making the switch from Figure to Physique. If she can come in full she might have a chance to do well.
