Press Release: Supplement Company LG Sciences gives back

Las Vegas, NV – December 22, 2008 — In these tough economic times, it is hard for businesses to find extra funds to sponsor charities, but LG SCIENCES LLC, maker of sports supplements, is keeping its commitment to give to those in need. This company currently sponsors over 50 children in the U.S.A and abroad with food, shelter and clothing and recently helped to provide Christmas toys to at risk kids in the struggling economy.

Despite the soft economy, LG Sciences LLC has pledged to add more children in need to the company’s roster. “Now more than ever it is important to give to the needy. Often, we are shown images of starving kids in other countries, but we are surprised to see that children here, in the U.S. and in Michigan are not properly nourished nor schooled. This is where we are going to focus our efforts this Christmas season,” mentioned Justin Bozung, General Manager for LG Sciences. “Almost daily we receive letters, cards and pictures from our sponsored kids thanking LG Sciences for giving them hope and long-lasting changes in their lives. These pictures & letters adorn our bulletin board so that our employees & guests can share the touching letters & beautiful photos of our families. I hope they know that our hearts go out to them.” commented Bozung. Although the company had a goal to sponsor 100 kids by the end of 2008, recent business setbacks have impacted the ability to give as much as projected, although the company still expects to grow its charitable donations by at least ten percent.

Recent reports suggest that over 50% of Americans are giving less in 2008 than they did in 2007. ” LG SCIENCES LLC added more sponsored children in 2008 and will continue to be adding to the charity in December.” How did they do it? “Our shareholders elected to take less compensation this year than previous years and to give a larger percentage to these endeavors.” One important part of giving is making sure that the money actually goes to the kids, and there are many research sites that track how charitable organizations use the money. Bozung warns “Look for ones with an A- rating or higher, ensuring that at least 80% of the pledged money goes to the actual beneficiaries. We are very judicious in our giving because we want the majority of the money to go to the children.” Many charitable ratings organizations can be found on the Internet that give and exact breakdown of expenditures.

Press Release: FDA Issues Supplement Warning

It looks like the government is using the holiday season to issue a warning against some fat-loss supplements. We’ll see how this plays out.

FDA warns against some diet pills sold on the Web
By RICARDO ALONSO-ZALDIVAR

WASHINGTON (AP) — If you’re looking for a little help shedding extra pounds after the holidays, the government is warning you to stay away from nearly 30 weight-loss products that contain unlisted and possibly dangerous ingredients.

The pills are advertised as “natural” fat busters and have intriguing names like Imelda Perfect Slim and Zhen de Shou. Some are touted as new versions of “ancient remedies” from Asia.

They may promise an easy fix to weight problems, but the Food and Drug Administration on Monday said the concoctions contain unlisted ingredients, including high doses of a powerful anti-obesity drug, as well as a suspected carcinogen.

“When consumers are buying these products online, we’re telling them that if it sounds too good to be true, it is likely to be too good to be true,” said Michael Levy, an FDA lawyer who works on enforcement issues.

FDA lab testing found 28 dietary supplements that could land unsuspecting users in the emergency room. Most of the diet pills appear to be coming from China. They are mainly sold on the Internet.

Nearly all of the pills contain sibutramine, a powerful appetite suppressant that’s a chemical cousin of amphetamines. It can cause heart attacks, strokes and heart palpitations, especially in people with a history of high blood pressure or heart problems.

Sibutramine is also the chemical ingredient in the prescription drug Meridia, which is used to treat obesity. But FDA testing found that some of the diet pills contain nearly three times the recommended daily dose.

Several of the pills contain phenolphthalein, a chemical long used as a laxative, but which is now being withdrawn from the market because of cancer risks.

None of the supplements lists the dangerous ingredients on the label. “Consumers have no way of knowing that these products contain powerful drugs that can cause serious health consequences,” said Dr. Janet Woodcock, head of the FDA’s drug evaluation center.

The FDA is considering criminal charges against some of the companies, because they have not responded to requests for recalls.

The products are:
Fatloss Slimming, 2 Day Diet, 3x Slimming Power, 5x Imelda Perfect Slimming, 3 Day Diet Japan Lingzhi, 24 Hours Diet, 7 Diet Day/Night Formula, 7 Day Herbal Slim, 8 Factor Diet, 999 Fitness Essence, Extrim Plus and GMP.

Also:
Imelda Perfect Slim, Lida DaiDaihua, Miaozi Slim Capsules, Perfect Slim, Perfect Slim 5x, Phyto Shape, ProSlim Plus, Royal Slimming Formula, Slim 3 in 1, Slim Express 360, Slimtech, Somotrin, Superslim, TripleSlim, Zhen de Shou, Venom Hyperdrive 3.0

Hardbody Song of The Day: Women’s Power Week… Whitney Houston – I Wanna Dance with Somebody

This week we’ll feature women with the most powerful voices in the music biz. Today’s song comes from one of those women, Whitney Houston. You could pick any number of songs that showcase her incredible vocal strength. “I wanna dance with somebody” has the best haired video. 🙂

Lyrics…
I’ve been in love and lost my senses
Spinning through the town
Soon or later the fever ends
And I wind up feeling down
I need a man who’ll take a chance
On a love that burns hot enough to last
So when the night falls
My lonely heart calls

Hardbody Song of the Day: Billy Idol – Flesh For Fantasy

Flesh For Fantasy by Billy Idol has grown on me lately. I’m a huge fan of Vh1 Storytellers, where the artist often tells something about their music in an intimate atmosphere. Well that’s how the orginal series was, not so sure the Kid Rock version this year did that but I digress. This song is about 25 years old and the more I listen to it the cooler it gets. The beat is pretty kick ass and add the guitar in, you’ve got a groovy little tune. Don’t forget the stellar dance moves and pleather pants! AWESOME.

Who’s stepping up to bring pleather pants back? 🙂

Hardbody Song of the Day: Janitor Bob & the Armchair Cowboys – Happy Song

Many times you hear a song and it takes you back to a place in time. Janitor Bob & the Armchair Cowboys’ Happy Song does that for me. This obscure band calls South Dakota home, or at least they did in the mid-90s, and takes me back to the summers of South Dakota. It’s a different lil tune that I’m guessing most of you have never heard before. If you check it out on iTunes, the version is much better than the Youtube clip below. I also recently found them on facebook last night and was like an early Christmas present. Allow me to introduce the Happy Song to you on this Fabulous Friday.

South Dakota Mom Makes the News

It’s great to see women making the news in unexpected places and by conventional ways.

Breaking The Bodybuilding Norm
For many, weightlifting is simply an act of physical fitness. But for bodybuilders its an absolute passion. And while it’s always been a male-dominated sport, it’s become increasingly popular with the opposite sex.  And a mom from Brookings is starting to flex her muscles.

Meet Jackie Geppert, 32-year-old nurse, mother of two, and champion bodybuilder…enjoying a family dinner at home with her kids.

“They’ll ask me, how did your lift go today?” said Geppert.  “Because they can probably tell if I’m crabby or happy how it went.”

The gym is Geppert’s second home.

Hardbody Marketing Tips: Guerilla Marketing at a Women’s event

If you’re not familiar with the term, “Guerrilla Marketing” – wikipedia does a good job of explaining it.

Guerrilla marketing is an unconventional system of promotions, running on a very low budget, by relying on time, energy and imagination instead of big marketing budgets. Typically, guerrilla marketing is unexpected and unconventional, where consumers are targeted where they would not be expecting, which can make the idea that’s being marketed memorable, generate buzz, and even spread virally. The term was coined and defined by Jay Conrad Levinson in his 1984 book Guerrilla Marketing. The term has since entered the popular vocabulary to also describe aggressive, unconventional marketing methods generically.

This is a perfect example of what was described above. The fitness industry could take a cue from AXE deodorant on how to creatively market with a small budget. AXE sent a guy to  a women’s only running event and seconds before the start he sprayed himself with AXE deodorant. The lad was running for his life as the women’s race began. Funny, simple and not something you’d expect to see at the beginning of a race. It also created a buzz – this is a key component that many people fail to do.

axerunner.jpg

Think of yourself as a product or if you have a product take a step back and look at it. How are you marketing yourself or your product? Could you utilize guerilla marketing to your advantage? Maybe, maybe not. That’s for you to decide but it can be an effective tactic if done correctly.

Arnold Classic – Who do YOU want to see in it?

arnoldclassic.jpg
Arnold Classic 2009

The deadline has passed for the IFBB Pros hoping to get an invite to the prestigious Arnold Classic weekend. There will only be 15 women chosen for the figure portion of the contest. There are typically 2-3x that many women who submit their application to be chosen. Who will get an invite this year? You can count on a number of the top contenders to return. Look for a large number of the women in the top ten of the Olympia to be on stage. There are always a few new faces who get chosen as well. The women who show promise of being a future star often make the list. This blends a nice mix of seasoned vets as well as fresh faces to the event. The final list may or may not be out before Christmas. We’ll know before the end of the year but I know many women are hoping Santa comes early for them.
Chime in and let’s here what ladies you want to see in Figure, Fitness and Bodybuilding. You can leave your list in the comments below…

Social Networking – Myspace vs Facebook

I’m a social networking geek. It started with Friendster years ago, then it was myspace and now it’s facebook. I’m amazed at the technology that facebook has to offer it’s collective society. The coolest thing has been hearing from people I haven’t seen or heard from in over 15 years. I find myself spending far more time than I need to updating my status, participating in snowball fights and wondering what the hell I am doing getting poked at and why am I poking this person back?! I ran across this amusing video that pretty much sums up the social networking sites. If you don’t participate in any of them you won’t see the humor in this but those of you who have myspace and/or facebook accounts will get a chuckle.

There are a number of great things that can come from social networking sites and like anything there can be drama. When we conducting a poll a few months ago, the majority of voters said that “YES” myspace or facebook caused drama in their life. Maybe you moved a friend out of your top friend’s list on myspace and it pissed that person off. Did you move them from the number 2 spot to the number 6 spot? Ohhh don’t do that. My new favorite drama causing move on facebook is updating your “status”. If you change it from “single” to “it’s complicated” watch the messages pour in.

Check back as I’ll explore the topic of social networking and how you can use it to your advantage in the days ahead.

Pole Dancing out of the Club and into the Gym

When the words “Pole Dancing” are mentioned a number of thoughts come to mind, most of which do not involve a gym. Pole Dancing classes are nothing new but they are finding their way into gyms. An article in the Boise Weekly talked about the topic.

Boise is part of a larger trend, not just nationally, but around the world. Pole dance competitions have been around for years, with national and international titles decided annually—the U.S. Pole Dance Championship is set for March in New York City. Miss Pole Dance Australia draws thousands to watch the finals, while organizations like the U.S. Pole Dance Federation, the World Pole Dance Federation and the International Pole Dance Fitness Association not only organize competitions, but also serve as networking sites.

The greatest challenge all the groups face is pole dancing’s stereotype. Holley said that while there is a distinctly sensual side to pole dancing, it’s not limited to that. Students get the benefit of learning how to move their bodies in different ways while building strength and coordination, and an added bonus to that is that they often leave more aware of their bodies, she said.

I’ve spoken to a few women who have taken this type of class (yes actually the class and not the stage) and commented on it being one of the hardest classes they’ve ever participated in.  What do you think?

Wednesday Weirdness – Eyelid Advertising

Everyone is feeling the crunch in the economy and now a beauty web site is looking to help out. How? By renting out your eyelids as advertising space. Feelunique.com is offering the opportunity to earn 10 pence per wink in return for putting the company logo on your eyelid. That’s about 15 cents per wink and you can earn up to £100 per model (roughly $154.00). Don’t worry the logo is only temporary.

Amy Rebours of the web site shares, “We all take notice when we’re being winked at so what better way to advertise feelunique.com than on people’s eyelids. It’s a genuine marketing first, which encourages people to spread a feel-good winking moment and earn some much-needed extra income in the process.”

Hardbody Song of the Day: Jamiroquai – Canned Heat

What’s not to love about this goofy ass spot from Napoleon Dynamite? You may have spotted someone dancing like this at a recent holiday party. A friend of mine recently broke out similar moves at a wedding reception. She was convinced she was a great dancer (too much of the bubbly will do that to you). Who is still sporting the MOON BOOTS? Come on, I know someone still has a pair. 🙂 Gotta dig it.

As Jamiroquai’s “Canned Heat” says, “Hey – dancing nothing left for me to do but dance… Off these bad times I’m going through just dance…”

If anyone finds a can of heat please send it to Denver.

Hardbody Photo of the Day: NPC Competitor – Sara Hurrle

Today’s photo of the day was taken after NPC competitor Sara Hurrle winning the 2007 NPC Colorado Pro/Am Figure. Hurrle went on to win the 2008 California Stat Figure Championships. What’s next for Sara? We’ll have to wait until next year but she might make a return to the stage… in fitness. This image is also one of the “Wallpapers of The Week” on bodybuilding.com.

Sugar Shakedown – New York Governor wants an Obesity Tax

Sugar filled, non-diet soft drinks could get a shakedown in New York if the Gov. David Patterson gets his way.

From Topnews.us:
In an effort aimed at close the $15 billion state budget gap, New York Governor David Paterson is calling for a 15 percent tax on soft drinks – the “obesity tax”, which turns public concerns over obesity a politically-acceptable target for taxation.

The tax will be imposed only on regular, high-calorie soft drinks, like non-diet versions of Coke and Pepsi, and could generate more than $400 million, along with helping to curb obesity. In fact, some public health advocates support this soda tax, for the singular reason that it might lead to healthier choices.

The specifics of the proposed tax are yet to be released, as the details of the governor’s budget plan are expected to be unveiled on Tuesday.

Ed Sherman, at McBreen’s Beverage in Lynbrook, opines that the soda tax could be quite confusing. Sherman said: “There is a fine line with a lot of sodas. It would be a difficult thing to regulate what’s considered diet and what’s not considered diet.”

The tax is expected to face opposition from both Coca-Cola and from Pepsico, which has its corporate headquarters in the New York state.

The American Beverage Association (ABA) has argued that lack of exercise, genetics, and other factors need to be taken into consideration while studying the causes of rising obesity rates. ABA president, Susan Neely, said the idea of taxing a single category in response to obesity concerns was “misguided” and “ridiculous”.

According to Neely, “there will be strong opposition to this kind of tax, given the economic conditions.”

Posing Provocatively… Risky Business?

Jennifer Aniston is on the cover of GQ magazine sporting nothing but a tie and it’s causing quite a stir. Why is that? It’s not the first time she’s posed for provocative photos. Most women would love to have her body and let’s not forget she is 40 years old. Aniston has been marketed with mostly a wholesome appeal in her roles on TV and in the movies. Some people feel this photo is inappropriate for her image while others are cheering, “You Go Girl.”

anistongq1.jpg
Jennifer Aniston on the cover of GQ.

It brings up a topic that many women ask me about in the fitness industry. Should I take provocative photos?

I personally don’t care what anyone does. It’s up to the individual to set their own boundaries of comfort. However, there are a few points to consider when thinking about posing provocatively…

• The images will always be around after you take them. Most of the time, the model will not own the copyright to the images. This means the photographer owns the photos and depending on the model release can use them even if you have a change of heart later on.

• Some magazines will not use women in their publications if nude or topless photos exist of them. That’s their right and something to consider when taking photos for web sites or your own member’s section. Other magazines embrace it and want to see that. Consider how you want to market yourself and what image you want to be known for if you want to be in a magazine.

• Many times it’s how the photos are shot that make a bigger impact. The image of Jennifer Aniston is shown in a tasteful, professional manner. This is a far cry from a hotel room where a model has no makeup, the lighting is terrible and does nothing to further the woman’s image. My point – if a photo is shot in a provacative manner it doesn’t always equate to being bad or distasteful.

• If you’ve taken nude / topless photos in the past but don’t any more, so be it. Chances are they will show up online somewhere and there is no sense in trying to deny it or being ashamed. If you’ve done them and choose not to do them now, say so. At the time maybe it was in your comfort zone but now it changed. No big deal, just be upfront about it and not try to deny or hide from doing it.

Bottom line is think about your goals and aspirations for the future. Trust your gut. If it feels like a bad idea, don’t do it. If you have no problem with it – then embrace it and don’t be ashamed for doing so. If you want to do provocative photos, (however you coin that… be it nude, topless, thong, implied nude or whatever it may be) take the photos with someone you trust and know will present you in a positive light.
