America, We’re FAT

While I am happy to see that the state I call home (Colorado) is the “least obese” it disturbs me to see the percentages of obesity in America. A report, published yesterday, from the Trust for America’s Healthy (TFAH) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) claims, “Adult obesity rates increased in 28 states in the past year, and declined only in the District of Columbia (D.C.), according to F as in Fat: How Obesity Threatens Americas Future 2010″. The report goes on to say, “more than two-thirds of states (38) have adult obesity rates above 25 percent. In 1991, no state had an obesity rate above 20 percent.”

So what’s up with Americans and their weight? Eating habits, processed foods, lack of exercise? Take your pick but it’s likely a combination of all three.

Most Americans (80 percent) recognize childhood obesity as a problem but many parents see their kids as healthy. Are parents to blame? ABC’s Nightline addressed the issue last night.

Read the report here and see how your state measures up.
