Backstage Fun in Chicago

I’m sorting through more photos from the weekend in Chicago and some of the best shots are ones most people don’t get to experience unless you’re a competitor or in my case, part of the media. This candid moment shows Nikki from protan and figure competitor, Pamela Soper joking around about tanning and wearing rubber gloves. Pam was demonstrating the proper technique for putting on a rubber glove.

No word on if she asked anyone to turn and cough.

2009 NPC Jr Nationals Photos & Results

Over the weekend I snapped several thousand contest photos at the 2009 NPC JR Nationals. The fitness routines are always my favorite to capture and this weekend was no different. Check out the photos from all the classes, here on bodybuilding.com. If you’re looking to order prints from the competition, you can do so by contacting the official photographer of the event J.M. Manion.

I was marching to the wrong drum

I heard Depeche Mode’s “Wrong” for the first time while traveling home from Chicago. I’m digging it.

I was marching to the wrong drum
With the wrong scum
Pissing out the wrong energy
Using all the wrong lines
And the wrong signs
With the wrong intensity
I was on the wrong page of the wrong book
With the wrong rendition of the wrong look
With the wrong moon, every wrong night
With the wrong tune playing till it sounded right yeah

2009 NPC Junior Cal – Overall winners

In Rosemead, California, Lonnie Teper promoted a great show, in which two outstanding overall winners were crowned. Here is Figure winner Sunny Daye and Bikini winner Elena Andrade backstage after the contest ended. Congratulations.

NPC Jr. Nationals Prejudging from the Press Pit

The scores have been tabulated and now we wait for the results of the 2009 NPC Jr. Nationals. Who will leave the NPC ranks and join the elite group in the IFBB? We’ll find out in a few hours. If you haven’t been following the live action you can do so by viewing the twitter feed box on the right or follow the tweets at www.twitter.com/hardbodynews.

I had my happy ass planted in the press pit, photographing for bodybuilding.com and this is how I saw things shake out. Keep in mind these are only MY OPINIONS and not those of the NPC or the judges. I mostly agreed with the callouts and there was only one class that really left me baffled.

fitnessroutine.jpg
Flying high at the NPC JR. Nationals.
FITNESS
The fitness routines kicked off the evening of events. Overall I felt the routines were good. There wasn’t anyone that left me thinking, how the hell did she get to this level? The A class had two very promising young ladies competing. Victoria Larvie and Khade Ariel are the future of fitness. Victoria won her class at the NPC JR USA and has steadily improved her routines as well as her physique. Ariel Khadr from Great Neck, NJ is one to watch. Killer looks and routine. She has the potential to become a pro while still in her teens. I look for Paige Oliver to take home top honors in this class. The 5′ 1/2″ beauty from Scottsdale, AZ should win the physique round and will be in the mix of the top 3 for the routine rounds. I like Camala Rodriquez in the tall class. I’d say the overall title will be a battle between the short and tall winners, which I have Paige vs. Camala.Physique Rounds – I’d have it…

A Class
1. Paige Oliver
2. Skye Fisher
3. Babette Mulford
4. Victoria Larvie
5. Rachel Patton

B Class
1. Desiree Walker
2. Abbey Busby
3. Leigh Ann Yeager
4. Nez Zamorano
5. Tara Lavalley

C Class
1. Camala Rodriquez
2. Kayde Puckett
3. Stacy Wright
4. Stefanie Bambrough

FIGURE
The competition here was good overall. It seemed to get a bit tougher in a few classes than weeks earlier in Charleston, while other classes seem to still lag behind in overall quality of physiques. Here’s how I saw things from the Figure prejudging:

A Class

1. Christina Vargas
2. Mandy Henderson
3. Catherine Chlipala
4. Ecaterina Pasiakos
B Class
1. Josie Zamora
2. Candice Houston
3. Soleivi Hernandez
4. Tara Green
5. Ann Pratt

C Class
1. Karly Woodle
2. Emily Nicholson
3. Chrissy Burton
4. Monica Speckin
5. Ann Titone
6. Pamela Soper

This was a very large class and very competitive. Definitely a number of women who have tremendous potential.

D Class
1. Terri Turner
2. Jenny Lewis
3. Marie Ann Newman
4. Karin Kimura
The judges had the toughest time with this class and moved the women around a number of times. I like Terri Turner’s overall package here. Jenny Lewis looked great as well and I’d say definitely between those two. Marie Ann Newman looked good but I thought was a little too hard and flexed her quads too much in this class.

E Class
This class is the only class that really had me baffled. It’s not disrespect to the judges or the competitors but I didn’t see it at all how they did. Your top two from JR USAs will not be in the top five in this show – Alyssa Stroud who still had the best booty in the entire show will be in the 7-9 range. Laura Mealey will be in the top 10 but out of top five. A couple of the women in the top five callouts were soft from behind and I had them out of the top 10. That said I do think Jaime Meade looked great and should win this class. Elizabth Earhart and Patricia Nguyen should find themselves in the top 3.

F Class
1. Jodie Minear
2. Jeanne Nimmer
3. Amanda Breznau

It’s a tough call between Jodie and Jeanne. Both women are at their all-time bests and look great. I’d have no problem with either woman winning this class. Both were improved from their 2008 showing at the NPC Nationals.

Bikini
I liked the overall quality of competitors at this show and I think the winners of this show will be more telling of what is to come. There were more women to choose from and Sandi Williamson was the head-judge. I had a chance to speak with Sandi after prejudging about bikini and she shared a number of things with me regarding this show. I will post that up after the show and share her thoughts as she encouraged me to put the information out.

A – Sonya Vecciarelli
B – Janet Harding
C – Jennifer Celeste
D – Kat Holmes (but Jamie Polk could also make a strong case for the win)
E – Jaime Baird
F – Jessica Larence

Those are my picks for the winners in the bikni classes. Will I be right? Eh, we’ll have to see. I know whoever wore scrunchy bottoms for their bikini suit bottoms had an advantage. Bodysport.com’s Terry Goodlad and I both agree that the scrunchy suit bottoms are the way to go. When I asked Sandi if she felt the same way she also agreed. It doesn’t work for figure but for bikini it definitely does.

I’m off to the finals. Let’s see how right or wrong I am in a couple hours. Tune in for live updates and results from tonight’s event.

Mostly Me but Mostly You

Gavin Rossdale sings Comedown. You might remember this from his days with BUSH. Gotta love it.

Who was there to take your place
No one knows never will
Mostly me but mostly you
Do you say do you do
When it all comes down

The Thunder Rolls into Chicago

Here’s a look outside the host hotel at the NPC Jr. Nationals. This definitely isn’t good for the competitors hair or tan. Luckily most competitors are staying inside the host hotel which is connected to the venue. Note the stop or lack there of by this cabbie. lol

It does put a bit of a damper on the outdoor photo shoots but hey whaddya do? Not much when Mother Nature decide she wants to take a leak.

Alicia Harris & Keisha Pedigo Long Lost Sisters?

Many people have commented that IFBB Figure Pro Alicia Harris and NPC Figure competitor Keisha Pedigo look alike. The two lovely ladies had never met until yesterday. While Alicia and I were shooting she commented, “I think that’s Keisha the girl everyone thinks looks like me.” Sure enough it was Keisha who had just arrived for the athlete check-in.

Despite meeting for the first time in a Chicago parking garage, the two have since hit it off and could be seen hanging out together at the host hotel. Alicia will be working the Labrada booth while Keisha is competing this evening.

NPC Jr. Nationals Schedule of Events

If the check-in is any indication of what’s to come for tonight’s competition in Chicago, it is going to be kick ass show. There were a number of very beautiful women who had their game faces on. It’s time to get this party started! Here’s the breakdown for today’s events. Friday Funnies with Minnie Pearl

It’s an oldie and not really a goody but it so stupid it’s funny. Can you believe people used to make it a point to watch Minnie Pearl and Hee Haw? How many of you even knew who the hell Minnie Pearl was? LOL!

My Love’s Too Big For Only Friday Night

Imagine if you will… NPC figure competitors Ana Tigre, Terri Turner and Candice Houston were a musical group in the 70s. If they were it might look a little like the Arabesque’s performance of Friday Night.

I have to agree with Arabesque when they say, “Every night should be a Friday night”. Especially one like tonight that will go down in Chicago’s Regency O’Hare.

Friday night
Wrong or right
Dim the light we’re out of sight
Friday night
Wrong or right
Hold me tight with all your might
Friday night is alright
Every night should be a Friday night

Hardbody Harris

I caught up with IFBB Figure Pro, Alicia Harris for a shoot in her hometown of Chicago. She’s still in great shape after her pro debut last month at the California Pro. Here’s a couple quick shots from our afternoon.

Alicia Harris isn’t always “smiley”.

If you’re in Chicago for the NPC JR Nationals, stop by the Labrada Nutrition booth and say hell to Alicia. Mention HARDBODY.com and she might have a special gift for ya.

NPC Jr. Nationals Day 1

Schedule of events for this afternoon.

Hyatt Regency O’Hare Hotel
24 hours Microwave Room Delta B
24 hours ProTan – Appointment Only Malpensa

9-8 p.m. Promoter’s Office Grand Reg Office
6-7 p.m. Weigh-in (Men) United A/B
7-8 p.m. Weigh-in/Check-In (All Women) United A/B

Hotel is clean, easy to get to ($9 cab ride or free shuttle) and super convenient. It’s muggy, overcast and humid in the Windy City but all good. Ran into Performance Ready coach and IFBB Fitness pro, Carla Sanchez who was taking elevator rides with her son and delivering some food to her team of hotties.

I’m off to get in a few photo shoots and then check out the check-in. Stay tuned for continual updates throughout the weekend. If you’re at the show say hello. I’m the guy NOT carrying a gallon jug. 🙂

Video Tip of the Week: McJugg’n

Yes, I am fully aware of my dork status. I put it in overdrive recently by providing a video tip for the folks at bodybuilding.com. Need a quick laugh? Check it out here.

juggin.jpg
Are you McJugg’n?

Those of you who visit this site often know where my goofy tip of the week originates. If not, check out my Jug Bug post from last year.

Honoring the Pigness of the Pig

That’s what farmer Joel Salatin had to say about how he raises his pigs. You won’t see them in a hog confinement but rather roaming free through out the woods. Salatin is pretty hilarious in some of his thoughts,  “We don’t ask how to make a pig happy. We ask how do we grow ’em faster, fatter, bigger, cheaper. And that’s not a noble goal.” Actually, as goofy as it may sound he’s right. While pork may not be the healthiest, leanest form of meat how it is raised makes a big difference when it reaches our tables.

Ingredients. Do you pay attention to the ingredients of your food and where they come from? That was the driving point behind a recent segment on ABC’s nightline. They featured Denver based Chipotle and their efforts to healthier ingredients. While it may not be on your approved list of diet foods when preparing for a competition, they do make a damn good burrito.

Check out the story and video here.

The Chemicals Between Us

Bush rocks out a live version of “The Chemicals Between Us“. This rocks.

The chemicals between us
The walls that lie between us
Then lying in this bed
The chemicals displaced
There is no lonelier face
Than lying in this bed

Jamie Eason Doing Things Right

Most of you are well aware of who Jamie Eason is and if not what cave have you been living in?

I saw a photo of Jamie in 2005 shortly after her first NPC competition. She looked great and definitely caught my attention. I contacted Jamie via email and did a brief interview/profile with her for NPC NEWS magazine. Yes, she has a good physique and yes, she’s cute but the thing that impressed me the most about Jamie was her attitude. While working a booth at the Arnold Expo, she was friendly to everyone who approached her, was knowledgeable about the product samples she was handing out and made an impression. My point? There are plenty of hardbodies out there and a number of attractive women in the fitness industry. Take a chapter out of Jamie’s book and make an impression beyond looking cute.

Jamie has been on several magazine covers and is on another this month. The new issue of Inside Fitness has Jamie looking fit as ever. If you’re in Canada check it out, Terry Frendo is doing a tremendous job with this magazine.

Jamie also posted on her twitter account that she has resigned with bodybuilding.com and will have her own column in Oxygen magazine.

Jamie Eason is doing things right and proof that you can make it in the fitness industry. She didn’t get there overnight but has definitely made a name for herself in the industry.

NPC Bikini Competitor Jessica Lawrence with You All Day

Hey Hardbodies! There are two new wallpapers are available for download at bodybuilding.com. The first features Florida NPC bikini competitor Jessica Lawrence. I shot with Jessica while in Charleston, SC at the NPC JR USA. She rocked not only the competitive stage (winning the tall bikini class) but also in front of the camera. Jessica will be in Chicago this weekend for the NPC Jr Nationals where she hopes to leave the windy city a pro.

bg363_sm1.jpg
Jessica Lawrence rock’n the new desktop.

There’s also a pretty sweet wallpaper of a rugby event I attended on Sunday. It was my first time watching rugby and hella fun to photograph. If you think you’re tough, watch rugby and then ask yourself how tough you really are. Still think you’re the next billy bad ass? Try playing it. It’s no wonder rugby players drink heavily after their events, I would be too if I took the beating they do.

We all get a little f’d up sometimes

I heard this song for the first time when listening to Pandora radio. Tat brings you “Stay Up”. I’m digging it.

You’ll stay up all night
to keep my eyes dry
You’ll stay up all night
to make it easy when I cry
You’ll stay up all night
stop me feeling like I could die
You stay up all night
to be by my side…

You stay up all night
We all get a little fucked up sometimes
You stay up all night
to make it easy when we cry
Stay up all night
We all get a little fucked up sometimes

How does a duck know what direction south is?

Anyone remember this group? The Crash Test Dummies sing “How Does a Duck Know?” They were an odd group but you can’t help but laugh listening to some of the lyrics from their song.

How does a duck know what direction south is?
And how to tell his wife from all the other ducks?
You can cut a chicken’s head off
and it will keep on running and twitching

Bodybuilding.com’s Ryan DeLuca Named Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year

Congratulations to Bodybuilding.com‘s CEO Ryan DeLuca for this major accomplishment. I’m proud to say I’ve worked with Ryan and the team at Bodybuilding.com for over 6 years. The leadership and vision Ryan has is well beyond his years. Congratulations Ryan, you deserve it.

Bodybuilding.com CEO Ryan DeLuca Named Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year® 2009 Award Recipient in the Utah Region
Award Recognizes Entrepreneurial Excellence in the E-Commerce Category
Meridian, ID – June 15, 2009 – Bodybuilding.com, the Internet’s most-visited bodybuilding and fitness site and largest on-line retailer of nutritional supplements, announced today that Ryan DeLuca, CEO received the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year® 2009 Award in the e-commerce category in the Utah Region. According to Ernst & Young LLP, the award recognizes outstanding entrepreneurs who are building and leading dynamic, growing businesses and recognizing them through regional, national and global awards programs in more than 135 cities in 50 countries. An independent panel of judges selected Ryan DeLuca, and the award was presented at a gala event at the Salt Palace Convention Center on June 12, 2009.

Befitting of this award, Ryan DeLuca has always held himself to a standard of success higher than most. One can find his daily, monthly and yearly plans neatly taped to his office walls and on his master bathroom mirrors. Ryan did not spend money on a traditional college degree; his learning was self-taught by taking advantage of the education provided by the world around him. His insatiable thirst for knowledge and determined focus has enabled him to do what many others have failed at—building a multi-million dollar company from the ground up.

DeLuca puts trust in his employees and recognizes he never could have won this award without them. “Even though I was handed this award tonight, it’s truly the whole company who is receiving it. There’s no such thing as the lone ranger entrepreneur it takes everyone in the company working together,” explained DeLuca.

The Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year awards celebrate their 23rd anniversary this year. The program honors entrepreneurs who have demonstrated exceptionality in such areas as innovation, financial performance and personal commitment to their businesses and communities.

“We are proud to recognize the achievements of Ryan DeLuca.”, said David Jolley, Ernst & Young LLP Entrepreneur of the Year Program Director for the Utah Region. “Award recipients of the Entrepreneur of the Year award build leading businesses and contribute significantly to the strength of our region’s economy. Their success helps our area grow stronger.”

As a Utah Region award recipient, DeLuca is now eligible for consideration for the Ernst & Young LLP Entrepreneur of the Year 2009 national program. Award recipients in several national categories, as well as the overall national Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award winner, will be announced at the annual awards gala in Palm Springs, California on November 14, 2009. The awards are the culminating event of the Ernst & Young Strategic Growth Forum, the nation’s most prestigious gathering of high-growth, market-leading companies. Hosted by popular television host Jay Leno, this year’s awards ceremony promises to be an event to remember.

Photographer Chase Jarvis Has It Right

This past weekend was one of the few I am home and fortunately I was able to catch a talk by kick ass photographer, Chase Jarvis. I’ve been following Chase’s work for some time and he is one of the “new guards” of photographers. What’s that mean? Essentially, he isn’t afraid to share with the online community. All too often photographers have walls up, mainly out of fear, on how they work. During his talk he said one thing that really stuck with me…

“Participate in the community. Expect nothing in return. Good things will come.”

Think about that for a bit.

It holds true in the fitness community and on this site. I did exactly as Chase mentioned, I was participating in the community and expected nothing in return. This site spawned out of my participation in the bodybuilding/fitness community. Years ago, I would provide contest coverage on a couple forums because I enjoyed it. Over time I figured why not do it on my own? That’s how Hardbody.com started to take shape. Good things have come as a result not only for me but also for many women in the industry. Muscle & Fitness Hers features two pages in each issue covering the women in the NPC & IFBB. I didn’t expect to get a column by creating this site but it did spawn from it.

Consider doing something similar for yourself in whatever field your in. If you’re a personal trainer – start your own Youtube channel and post workout tips. Start a blog and share things with others. Don’t try to be exactly like everyone else. Show how you’re different. Provide something no one else is or at least in your own creative way. Post comments here with links back to your site, participate in forums and join the community. You might be surprised what comes of it.

New Noise

If you’re not awake this Monday morning crank up Refused’s “New Noise”. This will get things rock’n.

Kick ass this week Hardbody people!
