Tailing Turner: Tight Curves & Healthy Kids Houston

The next couple of days you will get to tail IFBB Pro Teri Turner as she roams about in Houston, Texas. The first stop in “Tailing Turner” had the her joining fellow IFBB Pros Kristal Richardson, Heather Mae French and Stacey Oster for a charitable event this afternoon. IFBB Houston Pro promoter Lee Thompson and the folks at Tight Curves joined forces with the help of the above mentioned pros to help out “HEALTHY KIDS-HOUSTON”. It is an integrated community program for the prevention of obesity among minority children. Props to all who took time out to lend a hand for this cause. Here’s a few photos compliments of Teri.

KFC’s Double Down Chicken Sandwhich

Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) is causing commotion in the coop again and this time it’s over their new sandwich. That is if you consider two fried chicken fillets serving as bread a sandwich. Earlier this year KFC urged consumers to “un think KFC” when they announced their grilled chicken. Now they are serving up a sandwich with fried chicken, cheese and bacon. Mmmmm… I can feel my arteries clogging just thinking about it.

Photo from brandfreak.com

I hate to admit it but I would try this bad boy if it were available in my area. Currently, the chicken concoction is only available in Providence, Rhode Island and Omaha, Nebraska. As if people in the Midwest need another option for expanding their waist lines. I know there are a few Hardbody readers out there in Omaha and if there are any in Providence, try this thing out and let us know how it is. I know many of you would never touch this greasy mess so send a friend who doesn’t work out and have him/her report back. The question would then need to be asked, “are you really a friend if you let them double down on life by eating this?”

Andrea Watson on the Cover of American Body Plus

Andrea Watson has won the overall figure title in every show she has competed in. Quite the accomplishment, especially considering she hadn’t stepped on stage until this year. She took the overall title at the NPC JR USA and had anticipated making her IFBB pro debut at the Jacksonville Pro. Unfortunately, Andrea had to have her appendix removed and it sidelined her for the remainder of the season. I’m a firm believer in “everything happens for a reason” and confident this will apply in Andrea’s case.

The 4’10” figure sensation is the newest woman to grace the cover of American Body Plus magazine. The magazine covers mainly the East Coast and Southern region of the USA.

Congratulations Andrea and we look forward to seeing you make your debut next year.

Ali Sonoma asks… Do You?

The first NPC bikini winner and former UFC octagon girl, Ali Sonoma is featured in a new Duzoxin commercial. According to a lovely lady talking on their web site, Duzoxin is “the best kept secret to weight management” and an “all natural appetite suppressant that boosts energy to help you manage your weight.”

Ahhh this commercial makes me laugh. I don’t know if it’s the dramatic sound, the poor lighting, the women asking “do you” or a combination that has me chuckling. I’m still not sure what they want me to answer. Do I wish I hadn’t seen this commercial? Nah, I’m glad I did because I need a laugh every now and again. Do I want to try the product? No thanks. Maybe they’re asking if I want the girls in the spot. Whatever it is they are asking they caught my attention on the cheese factor alone.

The question remains… DO YOU?

Run This Town

“Run This Town” by Jay-Z (feat. Rihanna & Kanye West) was released this month and I’m digging it. The video has some cool art direction to it as well.

Life’s a game but it’s not fair
I break the rules so I don’t care
So I keep doin’ my own thing
Walkin’ tall against the rain
Victory’s within the mile
Almost there, don’t give up now
Only thing that’s on my mind
Is who’s gonna run this town tonight
Heeeey-hey-hey-hey-hey-heyyy

Cathy LeFrancois OUT of 2009 Ms. Olympia

Unfortunate news for female bodybuilding fans…

cathy.jpg
Cathy at the 2009 Arnold Classic

Cathy LeFrancois is out of this year’s Olympia due to an elbow injury. She shared the bad news with her fans today via her blog

So what can I really say. As much as I want to give you all a great update I have nothing good to say. I can not bend my arm past 90 degrees. Is it a pain factor? No it’s not! Its like there is a bone stopping the movement. However my X-rays show there is nothing wrong bone wise. Maybe a tendon or a ligament who knows but here I stand 5 weeks out.

So I tell you this my fans I am going to WIN the Arnold classic bigger better and stronger and next year I will take Olympia.” what?? I have to tell myself something like that, to give me some comfort ! 🙂 🙂 🙂 lol

The 2009 New York Pro champ has been battling the injury since falling on her hardwood floor earlier this month. Cathy is definitely one of the fan favorites and will be missed at this year’s contest. Get well soon Cathy!

Check out photos of Cathy on bodybuilding.com from a variety of contests.

Tianna Ta Hardbody Cover

Check out the September 2009 issue of Performance Auto & Sound Magazine. Tianna Ta, who is a finalist in the FLEXonline Bikini model search, is on the cover and what do you know… it says HARD BODY right on there. SWEET!

Tianna tells me she will be competing in a NPC bikini competition next month. Good luck there and at the Olympia!

Oooo La La Lamb

Michelle Lamb is rock’n the hardbody one year after giving birth to her son. She won the overall bikini at the Jule Palmer Ultimate Showdown earlier this year and looks to continue her winning ways this weekend at the North Americans.

2010 Status Calendar – Sneak Peak at Stern

Check out this sneak peak image of IFBB Figure Pro Erin Stern. Photographer TC Chang along with Status Fitness Magazine will be releasing the 2010 edition of their calendar at this year’s Olympia. TC is a creative guy who does solid work as you can see from this sample.

Houston We May Have A Problem

No, there’s not a problem with this weekend’s IFBB Houston Pro show, in fact it is shaping up to be a very competitive contest. There could be a problem for those of you making predictions for this weekend’s event. One competitor many wouldn’t consider putting in their top picks has a little something to say and she’ll do it with her new streamlined physique.

Shortly after finishing outside the top ten at this year’s Orlando Europa show, Nicole Pitcher Scott contacted Southern contest prep man Tres Bennett. Under Tres watchful eye, Nicole is in her best shape since her Olympia qualifying 3rd place at the 2007 Colorado Pro-Am. Nicole made the long trek from London and is staying with Tres and Shannon to make sure she is dialed in for Houston.

Tres knows the line-up is deep but he assures me Nicole will be in condition to battle for an Olympia qualifying spot. We’ll see how things unfold this Saturday in Houston. Good luck Nicole!

Jessica Lawrence A Rising Star

Pick up the September 2009 issue of IRONMAN magazine (with Jen Hendershott on the cover) and flip to page 200. You’ll see the stunning Jessica Lawrence featured as one of Lonnie Teper‘s Rising Stars. Jessica makes her way to the NPC bikini stage this weekend at the North Americans.

The stage photo is from this year’s NPC Jr. Nationals and the inset shot was taken at Tres Bennett & Shannon Meteraud’s gym in Charleston, South Carolina. Jessica is a pleasure to work with and I had fun shooting with her. Good Luck this weekend Jess!

Bikini Bombshell Missy Coles

If you still aren’t convinced the NPC bikini division is bringing out some killer physiques, look no further than Missy Coles. The twenty-eight year old, Public Relations rep is a former classic dancer and one to watch this weekend in Cleveland. She recently won the bikini tall class at the NPC Coastal USA and has her sights set on another win this weekend at the North Americans.

Missy will be making the trip from Tampa, Florida this weekend with eleven other Bombshell Fitness women. The Bombshell Team is coached by IFBB Fitness Pro Shannon Dey. The bombshells continue to make waves in the NPC this year and with women like Missy, it’s easy to see why.

Hardbody Hottie – Kim Sheppard

Kim Sheppard is one hardbody momma. When this mother of two isn’t in an airplane she’s hitting the gym. She’s found her groove in the world of NPC figure and has one helluva physique. Kim plans on competing again next month and don’t be surprised if she leaves NYC an IFBB pro.

All Nightmare Long

Metallica jams with “All Nightmare Long”. This is a good song to add to your gym playlist.

‘Cause we hunt you down without mercy
Hunt you down all nightmare long
Feel us breathe upon your face
Feel us shift, every move we trace
Hunt you down without mercy
Hunt you down all nightmare long, yeah
Luck. Runs.

Give Your Thumbs A Workout

Many sites are cluttered with ads, most of which lack any creativity. Today I ran across an exception from Sprint.

worldthumbfederation.jpg
Ad encouraging visitors to pump it up.

When this ad encouraged me to “get ready for new classes, gossip, and BFFs” by working out my thumb they had me. HILARIOUS! The folks at Sprint mess with ya a bit on level one aka “thumbell” by saying, “Your social skills are only as strong as your thumbs!” Silly? Absolutely. Dumb? Kinda but hey it broke through the clutter and brought me to their site.

Think about how you can cut through the clutter and get noticed.

Hendershott Joins Ladies Olympia Webcast Team!

Burgerville Breaks It Down

This is a cool story coming out of Portland, Oregon by way of www.katu.com. Burgerville is trying out a program that prints the nutritional information for each order directly on the receipt. What makes this so unique is that the nutritional information is custom to your order.

“Guests order and ask for different things: different buns, different cheeses, different sauces, different everything,” said Jeff Harvey, president and CEO for Burgerville. “So to put a label on the menu is not going resolve that challenge.”

Right now this caloric-bill program is just a pilot program. But it could be expanded to more stores in September.

“It’s kind of nice,” said Burgerville customer John Spaith. “If I was watching my weight more this would be very helpful.”

This would be awesome to see implemented in more places.

Do you speak-a my language?

How do you not smile listening to Men at Work’s Land Down Under? This video is almost as amusing as the song itself.

Buying bread from a man in Brussels
He was six foot four and full of muscle
I said, “Do you speak-a my language?”
He just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich
And he said,

“I come from a land down under
Where beer does flow and men chunder
Can’t you hear, can’t you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover.” (Yeahhh!)

American Heart Association Sugar Guidelines

Some interesting facts on sugar and soft drinks. Don’t think drinks are big business? Try this fact on for size… “The U.S. market for carbonated soft drinks, diet and non-diet, was worth nearly $73 billion last year. Including non-carbonated drinks such as teas, juices and energy drinks, it was worth about $110 billion to $115 billion.”

Source reuters.com:

Aug 24, 2009 (Reuters) – The American Heart Association issued guidelines on Monday saying most American women should have no more than 25 grams (100 calories) of added sugar per day, and most men no more than 37.5 grams (150 calories) per day.

Changing tastes and a growing health-consciousness in recent years have made some consumers switch to drinks they see as healthier, such as bottled juices, teas, vitamin waters or energy drinks, which often have added sugar as well.

Here are some facts about sugar and soft drinks in the U.S. market:

* Regular soft drinks account for 33 percent of the total consumption of sugar or sugar syrups added to foods in the U.S. diet, making them the leading source of added sugar.

Monday Marketing: Build a Fan Base

I had the chance to spend a couple days photographing Jamie Eason for bodybuilding.com last week. While shooting with Jamie we chatted about various topics and one thing that continued to come up was marketing. Jamie is probably the best example, at least in recent years, as someone who has found success in a relatively short amount of time. How did she do it? She’s done a number of things to make a name for herself but one thing she mentioned really stood out…

Build a fan base.

Jamie has successfully built a fan base and it continues to help advance her career. She’s marketed herself and treated the industry as a business. In the process, she has built a large fan base full of men and women alike. She currently has over 76,000 fans on myspace. What’s so big about that? Any time she posts a bulletin – that’s several thousand people being exposed to whatever message she sends. Her following makes her more valuable to potential sponsors. If you’re a supplement company and she tells her fans, “hey I like xyz product”, chances are quite a few people will check it out. If you’re a magazine publisher and you put her on the cover or inside, you know that people will pick it up because she is in it.

Building a fan base is a very broad topic. The simplest point to remember in building a fan base is to differentiate yourself from the thousands of other women who are in shape and look good. Think about what makes you unique. What story do you have to share that others will find inspiring? How can you motivate people to live healthier?

It takes more than looking good if you want to have a career in the fitness industry.

Ava Cowan Joins Team Gaspari

Ava Cowan is officially a member of Team Gaspari. I had a chance to chat with Ava a couple weeks ago in Tampa when she shared the news with me. When asked about the signing she informed me, this was the first supplement company she has signed with. She’s a worked booths in the past but was careful not to associate her name and image with a supplement company in the process. This is a smart move on her part as she has a fairly large following in the fitness industry and by signing with a supplement company she brings those fans with her. All too often women jump at any opportunity that comes their way in regards to sponsorship.

The Gaspari press release quotes Ava as saying, “I am absolutely thrilled to be making my way back to the NPC stage. From the moment I started to train for my first NPC figure competition in 2005, my dream was to become an IFBB figure professional. I have always used Gaspari’s products, and now I have the opportunity to take my supplementation protocol to another level. It is really a dream come true to be able to work with Gaspari Nutrition and I look forward to the endless possibilities in the years to come.”

Hardbody Shot of the Day – Khristy Poteat

Khristy Poteat is finding her stride in the world of NPC Figure. She’s moving up in the placings as her physique becomes more streamlined with less muscle. If you compare her photos from this year to last you’ll see what I mean. I had a quick, but fun shoot with Khristy last month. Here’s a peek at one of the images.

Ft. Lauderdale All-Female NPC/IFBB Event

One of my favorite shows of the year was the All-Female event held every Fall in West Palm Beach, Florida. Promoter John Organ always treated me well and who doesn’t love Florida in the fall? John unfortunately passed away and with that we lost an ever improving IFBB/NPC show. It was one of the only events that catered only to the female competitors. This year an All-Female event is back and will take place October 10, 2009 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. The duo of IFBB Pro Shannon Dey & NPC competitor Kristen Nagrani (Fit Girls Production Team) are the masterminds behind the event and it looks to be a great time.

The event is being billed as “For the Girls, By the Girls” and I’m told it’s “bringing Hollywood glamor to the competition world”! A bit more information from the Fit Girls on the weekend’s event.

From a red carpet entrance to you in spotlights and a beautiful venue that will make you feel like a Starlet, this show has YOU…”The Girls” in mind!

The affordable host hotel is situated directly on the Intercoastal Waterways where the view outside your window will include yachts, the Atlantic Ocean and beauitful South Florida architecture.  Ft. Lauderdales famous stretch of A-1-A is only a block away where you will find the world’s most beautiful beaches.  Also moments away is legendary Las Olas Blvd. This area has some of the best shopping, dining and people watching that South Florida has to offer.

In addition, if you are new to the NPC Stage, IFBB Bikini Pro Jaime Baird and IFBB FIgure Pro Andrea Watson will be on hand at check-in to help YOU with posing and answer any questions you may have!!

This NPC National Qualifier offers SEVERAL divisions including Over 35 Bikini, Masters Figure Over 35, 45 and 55 and Figure Novice and Jr. Divisions so YOU have a greater chance of taking home some trophy bling!!

PLUS, in addition to the NPC event, there will be an IFBB Pro Figure and Fitness Competition!!  See your favorite IFBB Stars from the magazines compete in person and up close and in person backstage!!

Houston Pro Figure Competitor List

This weekend’s Houston Pro Figure contest marks one of the last chances to qualify for the Figure Olympia. Three women will qualify for the Olympia in Houston. The list continues to grow and I look for a couple more to jump in before it’s all said and done. As of August 21st, this is the official list from IFBBpro.com

Susanne Bock
Tivisay Briceno
Krissy Chin
Michelle Craven
Heather Mae French
Candice Houston
Jacqui Jarrett
Katina Maistrelles
Petra Mertl
Karen Mullarkey
Hazal Nelson
Nicole Pitcher-Scott
Rosa-Maria Romero
Denise Starling-Steele
Erin Stern
Laura Stutter
Christina Vargas
Allison Williams

Candice Houston and Christina Vargas will be making their pro debuts, wasting no time jumping into the pro ranks. Christina turned pro at the NPC Jr. Nationals in June, while Candice achieved pro status last month at the NPC USAs. Stand-outs, at least on paper, have to be Heather Mae French and Erin Stern. Both women have been on top of their game lately but have completely different physiques. Krissy Chin has also steadily moved up her placings and will most likely be a contender at this show again. Another IFBB Figure Pro who has been in the mix lately is Rosa-Maria Romero. Don’t be surprised if you see her in the top callouts as well this weekend.

Myriam Capes – Wallpaper of the Week

If your computer is in need of a new look, spruce it up with Myriam Capes. Myriam is one of the Bodybuilding.com Wallpaper of The Week. The photo was from the 2009 Europa Super Show, where she placed second in the pro fitness division.

Myriam continues to improve her routines and refine her physique. Look for her to be a contender for a top spot next month in Las Vegas at the Olympia.
