When Others Speak on Your Behalf

Getting your name out there, gaining attention and marketing yourself is a smart idea. An easy way to do that is through the Internet and outlets like Youtube, Twitter, Facebook and/or your own blog. Nothing earth shattering or new there, right? Right.

When you do it on your own, you have control over what you publish. Many times fans will post videos or talk about competitors and how they look or what’s happening with them. This happens often and out of your control. It doesn’t mean you agree with what’s being said or how it’s presented. Other times there are people who like to speak on a competitor’s behalf, and when this happens they act as the messenger on behalf of the competitor.

This happened recently to a fitness competitor who was preparing for the NPC Jr. Nationals. Going into the show it seemed like a great idea. There were Youtube videos going up, posts on message boards and a bit of buzz. A gentleman posted on a message board stating, “I am officially her ‘manager’.” He goes on to say the competitor doesn’t need his assistance when it comes to her diet and training. He goes on to say, “ I am confident that she will be able to take home a pro card in 3 weeks!”

Awesome, right? Meh, not so much when you see the comments AFTER the show by this woman’s “manager”. One message board had the delusional fella saying the woman, “had all of these girls smoked in the physique round and her routine was top 2. Talk about politics…. WTF is the NPC trying to do?” He goes on to make an ass of himself by comparing this amateur fitness competitor’s physique to that of Adela Garcia, the 4x Fitness Olympia Champion and 3x Fitness International Champion.

Needless to say this competitor didn’t crack the top five at last weekend’s event. Did it have anything to do with “politics”? No. It is the most annoying thing I hear people say. You win by the same politics you lose by. Show some humility and bite your tongue with the “politics card”. If you’re going to have a manager do the talking for you make sure you know what you’re getting into. When they speak on your behalf you will sink or swim by their words and actions.

NPC Jr National Photos

Over the weekend, I was front and center photographing the 2010 NPC Jr. Nationals. This show marked the first pro qualifier for the women of the NPC and it brought out over 270 women. Check out the hundreds of photos captured throughout the weekend.

I’ll be posting the photos for purchase as well. If you were a competitor and didn’t get the photo order form, email me to request one. Check back for more Jr Nationals’ updates throughout the day.

Live Coverage from the NPC JR NATIONALS

We’re tweeting live from the 2010 NPC Jr. Nationals. I’ll do my best to keep you posted live via twitter as well as photographing the action as the “official NPC” show photographer. Look for the photos to be posted late tonight and also check out bodybuilding.com for more coverage through out the weekend.

I’ll be tweeting under Hardbodynews and if you’re not on Twitter, you can stay on this page and refresh for the live call-outs and get our thoughts on the events as they happen today.

One other way to stay tapped in is to follow everyone using the #jrnat tag for the event. Visit this web site to view a collection of people chiming in via twitter.

NPC Jr. Nationals Day One

Last night a number of ladies checked in for the 2010 NPC Jr. Nationals. This is the first pro qualifier of the year and it is certainly not short on numbers. Follow along here throughout the day or for the fastest updates follow us on twitter.com. Those of you tweeting from the event use #jrnat to help organize the conversation.

2010npcjrnationals

There are 24 fitness competitors and each class is evenly matched. Look for Tracy Winters from Oklahoma to put on a kick ass routine in the A class. She’ll battle against the likes of Paula Williams-Gulman and Sandra Augustin. Michelle Yeager, Cinzia Clapp and Lishia Dean are familiar names in the B class. The C class has Heather Skaar (pronounced “score”), Stacy Wright and Tamee Marie who are looking for that elusive pro card.

Women’s Bodybuilding doesn’t have the biggest numbers but with no pro card on the line, many ladies sit this one out. I think it’s a mistake to overlook this show and get your feet wet on the national level. More female bodybuilders should consider this show despite no pro card being offered. You can be a big fish in a small pond or a small fish in a big pound. Take your pick. Keep an eye on Marina Lopez from Aurora, Colorado. She used to compete in figure and has a great physique. This isn’t the final breakdown but before check-in it looked like 20 women will compete in the Bodybuilding division.

The bikini numbers are up and each class if fairly evenly numbered with about 10-15 in each class. The Bikini D Class will be the biggest (5’4″ – 5’5″) with about 20 women in the class. It also has a few “names” who have competed before. Holly Huizinga, Jessica Jessie, Rebecca Staggs, Nicole Guerrero and Brandy Leaver. This could be thee class to watch but you never know. Keep an eye on Ali Rosen in the “E” Class. She has some sass to her. The tall class 5’7″ and over looks to be the lame duck of the group. Nothing against the women who entered but there looks to only be 3 or 4 women in the class.

Figure numbers are up from year’s past and classes are stacked. I don’t know where all the women will check-in at with their height but the taller classes could have 35-45 women in their classes. This is going to be a helluva show to kick the year off. There are a number of women who have more than held their own on the national stage before and many more who have rocked their local shows. The figure division will once again take front and center as the talk of the show. At least it will be from my vantage point.

The host hotel is great. The only complaint I have is charging $18.00 for a plain baked potato and a chicken breast at the hotel restaurant. There is a “clean” menu but it certainly isn’t cheap no matter what you order. Aside from that everything is pretty awesome. I had a chance to chat with head judge Sandy Williamson and she stated once again regarding bikini… If you want to know what the judges are looking for, check out her video and follow what she said after the 2010 IFBB Pittsburgh Pro show. The advice is for NPC and IFBB Bikini competitors alike.

Twitter Hashtags Explained

This weekend the NPC JR Nationals will take place in Chicago with over 270 women slated to compete. I’ll be there covering the action for Bodybuilding.com, NPC NEWS and Hardbody.com. Some of you will be in attendance and others will be checking in from outside the event.

One of the easiest ways to communicate and stay tapped into the event is via Twitter. Many people still don’t understand the power of twitter and that’s fine. That’s a conversation for another time. Those of you who could care less about it can stop reading now. If you’re interested in how twitter can help you follow an event like the Jr. Nationals, keep reading.

If you use twitter or looking to start, one of the easiest ways to help organize and share your information is by “tagging” your tweets. You can do that by adding a “hashtag”. Hashtags make it easier to follow a topic.

twitterhashtag

So how do you create a hashtag? Simple. You do so by adding # in front of a keyword as you write your twitter update. For example, the hashtag (#jrnat) will be used to organize all tweets related to the NPC Jr Nationals event.

Examples on how to implement the hashtag…
• I’m packing for Chicago and ready to rock the #jrnat stage this weekend.
• I’m backstage waiting for to take the stage in my first National show. Excited! #jrnat
• #jrnat here I come. Watch out bitches I’m in it to win it.

You don’t have to have a twitter account or even understand twitter to get some value out hashtags. If you’re interested in a specific topic visit hashtags.org and type in the keyword you’re looking to follow. Those of you tweeting this weekend can help others follow what’s happening in your world by adding (#jrnat) to your tweets.

Visit http://hashtags.org/jrnat to see who is joining the Jr Nationals’ conversation. You can add multiple hashtags (#) to your tweets but typically you don’t want more than two or three. One of my favorite hashtags to use is the (#FAIL) tag.

Example:
Chill’n at #jrnat & Joe from HD Physiques won’t shut up about his phone. #fail

G’s Tip of the Week – Sprouts Rock

Don’t be afraid of sprouts.

gtip

Did you know that Alfalfa sprouts contain every essential amino acid? They are also a great source of vitamins, minerals, trace elements, carotenes, chlorophyll, folic acid and phytoestrogens. Alfalfa sprouts make a great addition to salad, sandwiches, and wraps, or you can just enjoy them by themselves. 🙂

So I Creep

Take a trip back to the 90’s with TLC and “Creep”.

Where oh Where are the Bikini Pros?

We’re four weeks out from the Pro Bodybuilding Weekly Bikini Pro and there are TWO women entered to compete. If you’re not dieting and training for the show by now chances are you’re not going to compete.

I don’t get it. You have NO advantage by waiting until the last minute to send your contract in. It’s not fair to the promoters to wait until the week of the show to enter the show. The media needs to know who is in and who isn’t, in order to build any type of interest in the shows. Previewing a show with two competitors isn’t interesting.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, the Europa Battle of Champions is being held the following week and there are ZERO pro bikini competitors entered. WTF?

It’s pretty simple ladies. You contact the IFBB Pro League office, request a contract for the show you wish to compete in. Then you mail it, fax it or scan it and email it back. It takes you all of 5 minutes.

JulieAnn Kulla Signs with GENr8

She went on to place second in her pro debut and ventured to the Figure Olympia shortly there after. After some time off she’s back and kicking things off with a bang by signing with supplement company GENr8.

Dianna’s Modeling Tip – Where to start?

Cover girl Dianna Dahlgten offers a couple tips on getting started with modeling.

diannamodeling

Hello, hello again everyone! Hope you are doing great!

One thing I have been getting asked alot lately is how do I get into modeling? If you want it… go get it but like anything, you gotta work for it. The easiest it to start online. Start by looking online and then ask yourself these questions…

What look do you offer?
Which genre of modeling do you want to be associated with?
Do you have head shots and a portfolio?
Do you have business cards and comp cards printed and ready to be handed out?

One of the best things I’ve found success with is networking. Get out and build your network. Meet people and interact.

A few things to think about when it comes to getting started. Have a great week everyone!

Vicki Nixon Battles Back

Call it a comeback. The last time we saw IFBB Pro Vicki Nixon on stage was 2007 as a bodybuilder. The New Jersey resident will return to the stage next month but not as a bodybuilder. Nope, Vicki will take the stage as a figure pro. You may be asking yourself why figure? Vicki is lucky to be alive, much less compete at any level. In 2008, she was involved in a devastating car crash and has been battling back ever since. Vicki’s doctors said her competitive career was over. She didn’t get the memo. I caught up with Vicki to learn more about her journey to compete once again.

vickinixon

HB: Originally from?

VN: I was born in Memphis, TN.

HB: Currently reside in?
VN: I live in New Jersey right now and have been here since 1995 when I married a NJ police officer whose job was what kept us here. In October he retires after 25 yrs of service and we will move to our Florida condo in Palm Coast where we will continue to work part time as personal fitness trainers. He’s also a massage therapist.

HB: That’s awesome. Please tell your husband thanks for his years of service.

HB: Your occupation?
VN: I have been a personal fitness trainer on and off for 26 yrs.

HB: How did you get into competing?
VN: I got into competing around 1985. A friend of mine put a magazine in front of me at the gym with Rachel Mclish on the cover and Cory Everson was in the magazine and he said, “what do you think about the way this women look?” I thought she was stunning and had just enough muscle for my liking… he then said with my genetics and focus I could look like that too. Long story short 6 months later I was preparing for a show. I was 25 when I stepped on stage. That was the beginning of my very long passionate relationship with bodybuilding and the stage. I had found my happy place…the gym.

HB: In 2008 you were in a car accident. Can you share what happened and what injuries you sustained?
VN: On Dec 20th 2008 at 10:48am my husband and I were on our way (with a truck load of Christmas gifts, our 2 small dogs and 2 weeks worth of clothes) for a Christmas vacation. We were going to spend half our vacation in Hilton Head, SC with my parents and the other half in our Florida condo which is 3 hrs away from Hilton Head. Long story short, we had just gassed up and were getting back on I-95 South bound in Dunn, NC and as we went through an intersection a lady blew the red light and t-boned my side of the truck, I was the passenger. On impact the truck rolled several times and caught on fire because she was guessed to be going about 55 miles an hour. When the truck stopped I saw my hubby seemed to be ok and I was then in “save my dogs mode”. I climbed out and looked in the back seat where they had been and at that time I was screaming where’s the dogs?! My husband said that they were under his feet on the floor board of the drivers seat! That means they flew all over that truck as it rolled. One dog is 3lbs and the other is 6lbs and they are our babies, as we were unable to have children. In a nutshell I was in shock and didn’t even know how badly I was injured at the time. Since I saw the car coming I braced and the impact caused several herniated disks in my neck and back…with 25 torn labrums in my shoulders and terrible soft tissue damage throughout my body. Thank GOD we both had seats belts on! Both dogs were injured and had to be hospitalized, one for 5 days with a bruised liver and the other had a bruised sternum. I am still in therapy for my injuries but blessed to be here to tell about it and even MORE blessed to have muscle that saved my life the doctors say.

crashphoto
A look at Vicki’s truck after the 2008 crash.

HB: What’s been the biggest challenge for you since the accident?
VN: As I began to get better about 6 months after the accident I was able to use my weight training as part of my rehab. I just had to go VERY light. I was told that with all my injuries I couldn’t lift heavy again or I would end up making things much worse. So with good PT and rehab I have be able to work my way back to pretty good conditioning. There’s still the pain and daily migraines.. I feared being in a car again and my motorcycle. Not to mention my pro bodybuilding career was over or so the doctors told me.

HB: How do you mentally get back in the competition mode?
VN: I have been through so much in my life. It seemed that with all my injuries and issues at hand I began to worked even harder to get back into shape. I spoke to Kim Oddo (my trainer who worked with me after I got my IFBB Pro card in 2004 until my last bodybuilding Pro show in 2007 at the Jan Tana) about possible transforming to figure. I had tossed that idea around before back in 2004 right before I got my IFBB Pro card. I actually did 3 figure shows that SAME year and did well! But as luck has it, I won the overall at Team Universe in 2004 in New York! Kim basically said…why keep thinking about it… JUST DO IT! So here I am 4 weeks out from mt 1st IFBB Pro figure show! Doing the same show I won my pro card at. Kim and I started this transformation back in Oct 2009!! So at this point I have been dieting and training my butt off for 8 months!

HB: So it’s not a mistake that your name is on the IFBB competitor list for the NY PRO Figure?

VN: No mistake I am coming back to the stage as a Pro Figure competitor.

HB: What’s the biggest difference training for a figure competition vs bodybuilding?
VN: Training for figure is TOTALLY different for me than bodybuilding because I had the muscle but I had to downsize it and have more of a “toned down ” look as Kim says. So to take off what took me 20 plus yrs to get was so strange to me. I have to train with light weights and high reps…circuit style training, one exercise after the other with NO break in between and I do 4 times around with cardio after each circuit! Then I was up to 80 mins a day of cardio on top of the circuit training! So I am in the gym about 2 hours on circuit days and 1 1/2 the other days. Its like night and day how I trained for bodybuilding.

vickinixon2
Vicki on stage as a bodybuilding in 2007.
See more competition photos here.

HB: Will we see you got back to bodybuilding?
VN: If I ever wanted to go back to bodybuilding, my body would have to dictate that. At this point with all my injuries… it’s a NO. Herniations don’t go away and I am not into surgery plus I have bone on bone in both knee’s and large hole in my right femur. I need a femoral/knee replacement and heavy weights would KILL me and send me right to the operating room.

HB: Are you planning to compete in any other figure shows or are you one and done?
VN: I have the Europa show 2 weeks after the NY Pro and then we are moving in October. I will take some time off, reflect and see how I feel before I decide to do anything else. I will be 50 yrs young this September, so I will also be the oldest IFBB Pro Figure competitor ever! lol! This new journey is not about where I place. It’s just to prove to myself that I can compete regardless of what life throws at me, I missed the stage and I love the ladies I meet along the way, it’s like a big family in the IFBB. And its not over till its over:)

HB: Do you still train other people for contests?
VN: I will continue to train others for shows as I do now, I have several girls now that are preparing for shows, bodybuilding and Figure. When we move to Florida, my husband and I want to both do it as a Team, we also have posing classes where we train in Pennsville, NJ right now and between us there’s 50 yrs of experience. He’s competed as long as I have!

HB: Do we get a sneak peak at what you’ll be bringing to the stage as a figure competitor?
VN: I have no pics to reveal at this time. I want the stage to be the 1st time anyone sees me as a Figure Pro. 🙂

HB: Thanks for sharing your story with Hardbody. Where can people find out more about you?
VN: Thank you for your interest me and my come back. I am so excited and a bit nervous to be honest! The change from bodybuilding to Figure means so many different things and wearing 5 inch heels is one of them. Let’s Hope I don’t slip and fall! I do have a website that Colette Nelson and Ron Durkin created for me in 2004, it’s www.vickinixon.com and you can find me on facebook under my name. I have an awesome DVD documentary out about some of the adversities I have been through in my bodybuilding journey and there are many. It reviles the person behind the physique. So many people see us as a fit body and don’t really know what we have been through to get to where we are. I shared very personal issues about my life in the DVD. I’ve received fantastic reviews from all who have viewed it. Mike Pulcinella was in my life creating it for 2 yrs and hes become a very dear friend of mine in the process. My DVD is called “Beyond The Pain” and you can purchase it on my website in my Store area.

HB: Thanks Vicki and we’ll see you in New Jersey next month!
VN: Thank you So much for this opportunity to share another part of my journey.

Check out some Vicki’s competition photos here!

Perks and Pitfalls of Coffee

Coffee it’s the first thing many people have in the morning. According to the National Coffee Association, 56% of American adults consume coffee on a regular basis. Is it bad for you? Not necessarily according to Donald Hensrud, associat professor of Preventative Medicine and Nutrition at the Mayo Clinic. Hensrud recently shared with USA TODAY, “”Coffee contains over 2,000 different chemical components, including cancer-fighting anti-oxidants.”

One challenge to avoid is filling your cup of java up with cream and sugar. Those venti double mumbo jumbino la la drinks at Starbucks can pack on the calories if you don’t watch it. Read some of the benefits and downfalls of coffee on USATODAY.com.

IFBB New York Pro Figure Lineup

The lineup for the 2010 New York Pro Figure is stacking up nicely. The event is just under a month away and there are 11 pros slated to compete. The show will coincide with the Team Universe contest on July 10 in Hackensack, New Jersey. The competitor list as of today.

2010 IFBB NEW YORK PRO FIGURE

1. Tivisay Briceno
2. Cheryl Brown
3. Cristiana Casoni
4. Nicole Coleman
5. Jennifer Hernandez
6. Vicki Nixon
7. Marcy Porter
8. Kimmy Trowbridge
9. Terri Turner
10. Stacy Wig
11. Jennifer Woodruff

I’m not sure if it’s a mistake or Vicki Nixon will be trying her hand in Figure. Vicki is an IFBB Pro Bodybuilder and while she can compete in any division she likes I’d be shocked to see her in the Figure competition given the amount of muscle she carries.

**Update** I’ve confirmed with Vicki that she will be competing in the figure division after some time away from the stage.

Consumer Reports Magazine Takes Aim at Protein Drinks

The supplement industry is big business. According to Consumer Reports magazine sports-nutrition sales are at $2.7 billion. That’s BILLION. The July issue of Consumer Reports Magazine investigates 15 different protein drinks and their findings are misleading. They claim, “Some protein drinks can even pose health risks, including exposure to potentially harmful heavy metals, if consumed frequently. All drinks in our tests had at least one sample containing one or more of the following contaminants: arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury. Those metals can have toxic effects on several organs in the body.”

You read that and you think holy crap I shouldn’t drink protein drinks. Well, not so fast. Cytosport, the maker of Muscle Milk, conducted their own third party tests and dispelled the magazine’s findings. Read their full report here.

One of the leading lawyers in the supplement industry, Rick Collins also comments about the report on his web site. Once you read these two articles you can see how results and stories can be skewed to fit the publisher’s agenda.

Optimum Nutrition responded to the findings as well. Check out their take on the story here.

Props to Cytosport & Optimum for meeting the report head on. I’d like to see other supplement companies step up and combat stories like this when they are published. Hiding and not addressing the issue only helps fuel the agenda of others against the sport-supplement industry.
