Monique Minton Making Waves

momo.jpg
Keep your eye on Momo in ’09.
The first time I met Monique “Momo” Minton was at the 2008 NPC Jr Nationals and swore it was IFBB Figure Pro Mary Lado. I wrote in June to keep an eye on this Lado look-alike, as if that is a difficult thing to do. Monique competed three times on the National NPC Figure stage and held her own in the top five. This year Monique has her sights set on the National NPC stage again but in the new bikini division. She placed well in figure so in theory she shouldn’t in bikini, right? Wrong. Monique has changed up her training to not lift as heavy and won’t have the muscular delts you saw on her last year. She has the physique that, in my opinion, is what a npc bikini competitor is all about. Not too much muscle but clearly works out and looks great. We’ll see if the judges agree when she takes the stage at the NPC JR USA‘s in May, at the first ever NPC bikini pro qualifier.
musclecover.jpg
Monique can be seen in the newest Muscle & Fitness magazine.
Pick up the newest Muscle & Fitness magazine and you will see Monique on about 14 pages. That’s just the beginning of the magazine exposure for her this year. Look for Momo to be on an upcoming cover of Muscle & Fitness Hers magazine as well as featured in future issues of other publications. Monique will also be launching a new web site this year at momofitness.com. UFC fans can often see her working the BSN booth at fights and she will also be working their booth at the upcoming Arnold Classic. Monique tells me she has been taking a few MMA classes but don’t look for her to get into the ring and fight any time soon.

Lots happening in the world of Momo in 2009, don’t look for her to tap out any time soon.

Hardbody Song of The Day: The Crystal Method – Name of the Game

This is one of the more bizarre videos you’ll ever see but it’s a pretty cool song. The Crystal Method brings you “Name of the Game“. Another solid recommendation from our peeps in Cali.

Award show follow up

StarPhysique’s Founder, Garba “Mister G” Onadja has informed us that he will be in attendance at this weekend’s LA Fit Expo. We’ll catch up with him in person to see what he has to say on camera. Which has a greater likelihood of happening… Him showing up to the Expo or this event getting rescheduled? Jennifer Nicole Lee is also slated to be at the Fit Expo working the BSN booth. We’ll get her thoughts on the matter as well.

Sic Italian Postwoman / Bodybuilder Under Investigation

An odd story from Italy…

An Italian postwoman won three bodybuilding competitions while she was off sick with a sprained wrist, a Trieste daily reported Monday. The 40-year-old woman, identified as A.C., is under investigation for defrauding the Post Office from April to November, the paper reported. Last year an Italian judge was reported for taking part in sailing events while off sick and a teacher for sending in sick notes while on holiday in Central America. Italy’s civil service has a poor record for absenteeism, clocking up about an average four days more than the private sector. Civil Service Minister Renato Brunetta has launched an ‘anti-slacker’ crusade which has made him one of Italy’s most popular ministers.

I guess if you’re on sick leave with a sprained wrist it means you shouldn’t compete in a bodybuilding contest.

Hardbody Exclusive: StarPhysique Award Flop

The StarPhysique Awards. What? You’ve never heard of them? You’d think that an event that professes to be the “The Oscars of the fitness industry” would have a little buzz behind it. Fitness model, Jennifer Nicole Lee issued a press release last month where you’d swear it was an event as big as her Oprah appeance.

“Being honored is a milestone in my career. I am humbled to be among the best of the fitness industry and Mixed Martial Arts industry. And I would like to thank all involved to make this incredible event happen. I would also like to congratulate all other fellow athletes who are being awarded, especially my fellow Team BSN athletes. This will be an event not to be missed!” says JNL.

It appears the “night to remember” is a night that will never happen. The StarPhysique Awards were to take place at the Four Seasons Hotel in Westlake Village, California this friday. Ticket prices start at $185 and go up from there, but there’s no mention on the event web site that this event won’t take place.

Less than a week out from the event Garba “Mister G” Onadja, the founder of this event, emailed the nominees informing them of the news. Mister G told the nominees that it was, “due to scheduling and venue agreements not being met”. He went on to say, “After careful thought and deliberations, the alternative venue being offered was simply unacceptable for the type of show and presentation that we have worked so hard to prepare.” Many of those who were nominated booked their flights and hotel stays weeks ago. The founder will certainly be reimbursing them, right? Don’t count on it. The response was, “I understand that in many cases airline tickets have been purchased and will try, to the best of our ability, to mitigate this with either additional tickets to the event (at no cost) or complimentary travel and hotel accommodations during the ceremony for our awardees.”

The founder reassured the nominees that the ceremony would be held at a later date and would confirm in the next two weeks the new date. Good thing because now Mister G is now going to attempt to get Mario Lopez and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to attend.

This is a great reminder to be cautious of events and people who are unproven. There will always be some one promising the moon and delivery nothing. Many people may have good intentions but should that be a free pass to under deliver? I don’t know Mister G or his intentions, but I’d like to give him the benefit of the doubt. An award show honoring hard-working individuals is cool but don’t compare an unproven, first year event to the Oscars. We all have to start some where but those who “get it” don’t try to be something or someone overnight.

I’ll keep you posted on any future developments with this event.

Hardbody Song of The Day: Memphis Bleek – Like That

Mixing it up a little bit this week. C-bass has been coming through with some solid songs and recommend another good one with… Memphis Bleek – Like That. I added this to my gym play list and it’s helped pass the time on the step mill.

Oh Lordy… Another Pro Turns 40

overthehillbirthdaycake.jpg

I caught wind today that another IFBB pro hits the big 4-0 today. Shannon Meteraud joins her good pal Tracey Greenwood in the 40 year old club today. No word on what she is doing with her big day, besides harassing me about the NPC JR USA web site. Shannon and her husband Tres promote the NPC Jr USA in Charleston, SC, an event that is top notch.. Shannon will be competing at the Fitness International in March. You might recall, she injured herself late last year which kept her our of the Olympia.
Happy Birthday Shannon.

Hardbody Song of the Day: Five Finger Death Punch – Stranger Than Fiction

Don’t let the first couple seconds of this song fool ya. Today’s song of the day come from Five Finger Death Punch, ya quite the interesting band name. Give “Stranger than Fiction” a listen, could be another one to add to the work out list.

Hardbody Song of The Day: Papa Roach – Last Resort

Another fairly obvious choice to add to the gym play list. Papa Roach’s song “Last Resort” is a good one to get ya move’n on that stair stepper.

Get after it this weekend!

Things NOT to include in a Newsletter

I receive a number of emails every day and a few of them are newsletters from competitors, models or trainers. A newsletter is a good idea to let everyone know what is going on in your world, what’s coming up, etc.

While sorting through hundreds of old emails that have been piling up in my inbox, I ran across one email that had a large PDF attached to it. Please do NOT send people HUGE pdf files. If you have a printed newsletter that is great but when sending it out via email, please compress the PDF and not have it be 10 megabites big. I’d suggest using an email program like Constant Contact or something similar to create a newsletter. Attaching PDFs is fine, just make them small in file size.

Another email, which also had a PDF, was more managable and I opened it out to have a read. It was laced with misspellings and grammatical errors. Do yourself a favor and have someone proof read your email before sending it out to the masses. This person has a “team” of competitors. Cool. Well no, not really cool at all when I read…

“XYZ competitor came in the best I have ever seen but at this level as we found out you must have more mass on your upper body to compete with some of these gorillas.”

I’m not sure if this trainer was attempting to be funny or if he really views the pro figure competitors as “gorillas”. Either way not a good idea. Publishing a newsletter that puts down the competition, when your competitor doesn’t place well, is not a good idea. Focus on the positives and don’t bother mentioning the negatives. It only takes away from the point of what you’re trying to communicate. The only thing I remember from this newsletter was the line above, nothing else sticks in my mind.

Is that the type of thing you want to have people remember you for? I’d hope not.

Pro with a Pet Raccoon?

Care to guess which IFBB Pro has a pet raccoon? True story.

The 42lb. raccoon is 8 years old, gets bathed every other day, enjoys eating Frosted Flakes and sleeps in the owner’s mop sink.

News from Ms. Fitness Olympia and Bodybuilding.com…

Jen Hendershott created PHAT Camp in 2002 because of her passion to help women reach their full potential in mind and in health. Hardbody Song of The Day: Nonpoint – Bullet With A Name

Looking to add more rock’n tunes to your gym playlist or help ya get to the weekend? Bullet with a Name from Nonpoint is one of those tunes that will help get the blood pumping.

Tracey Greenwood Hits the Big One

overhill.jpg

Dr. Tracey Greenwood took the IFBB Fitness stage by storm last year. Competing in almost every fitness show there was on the schedule, she showed that she’s far from “Over-The-Hill”. Tracey will most likely spend her 40th Birthday doing two cardio sessions, eating fish and maybe shopping for a new pair of sunglasses. Tracey finished a great ’08 season by placing second to Hendershott at the 2008 Olympia. The two will face each other again in a few short weeks. We’ll preview that in the coming weeks but for now let’s wish Tracey a Hardbody Happy Birthday.

Hardbody Song of The Day: Three Days Grace – Riot

Three Days Grace’s Riot is another one to add to your rock’n list. They apparently don’t have a video for this song so suffer through the slide show or just go download the song on iTunes. 🙂

Oh Lordy… Guess Who’s Gunna Be 40

Can you guess which IFBB Pro is going to be the BIG 4-0 tomorrow? A hint she’s competing in the Arnold. Careful don’t want to offend anyone who isn’t even close to being over-the-hill.

🙂

“Watch Out…There’s a new set of boobs on stage”

That was the response when I asked Adela Garcia how here Arnold prep was going. No, she doesn’t literally have a new set of boobs but she is serving notice to her fellow Figure International competitors. She laughed at her silliness and shared she is excited to be competing in the Figure portion of the contest. Adela has been on the Arnold stage before but in fitness, an event she has won… twice. This will be her first time competing in figure at this contest, hence the new boobs comment. She went on to tell me, “I can walk normal now. I’m 112 pounds and I feel great.” Adela was hobbling around with a crutch the last time I saw her. Fully recovered and ready to rock Adela is on pace to shake things up.

Stay tuned for more updates from The Chica, she has a number of things in the works.

Hardbody Song of the Day: Marilyn Manson – The Beautiful People

Sure the Marilyn Manson is a bit of a freak and his music isn’t for everyone. “The Beautiful People” has a couple interesting lyrics…

Hey you, what do you see?
Something beautiful, something free?

Please Supplement Ads… Try to Suck Less in 2009!

The supplement industry spends millions and millions of dollars in advertising every year. (I’m mainly refering to print advertising.) Can you name ONE supplement ad that caught your attention and made you buy the product?  Makes you think, huh? Sure there are some ads with great photography but most lack even that. The ad typically has a dude lifting a weight and a nice, big product shot. If that’s not the ad it’s a girl in a bikini with a product shot. This type of advertising may work for a newbie consumer but what about the experienced competitor and a more educated consumer? Where’s the ads that cut the crap and have an actual message and concept? They may be out there but it will take some looking to find it.

I saw a new ad for a company who will spend hundreds of thousands of dollars this year in the bodybuilding community. They will sponsor shows, have booths at the expos, athletes on their roster and ads in the magazines. If you’re going to spend this kind of money wouldn’t you take the time to do distiguinsh what makes your product different then the competitors? Apparently not. Stick a no-name guy (who isn’t even lifting heavy weights on there) slap the product nice and big and call it a day. BRILLIANT! If this company continues with this type of advertising we won’t hear about them in another year or two. They’ll have spent their money with nothing to show in return. Why? Because they listened to some “expert” with no real marketing or branding experience. They didn’t bother to think about the consumer and what message they are sending. There will be no buzz about the product.

Let’s see if the supplement companies can do anything creative this year. While they are trying to figure it out, you can take note on your own personal branding. STAND OUT and think through your message – be who you want to be but don’t be another cookie cutter wannabe.

Rant over. Yes, I do feel better. That is all. Carry on.

Self-Promotion: Everyone has a story to tell

Women ask me weekly how they can get noticed in the fitness industry. One of the things I tell them is, everyone has a story to tell; some are just a little more interesting than others. Think about why you got into competing and what makes you different than everyone else. If you don’t compete that’s ok, whatever it is you do there is an angle. Writers are always looking for an angle to a story. Don’t be afraid to tell your story. If you’re a personal trainer, great! Remember there are thousands of personal trainers, so what makes you unique and why should I care?

Use your local media to gain exposure, you never know where it may lead. Joe’s repair shop may be inspired by your story and end up sponsoring you. You don’t have to be endorsed by a supplement company to help pay for competition costs or defray your expenses. Think about what’s near you and the contacts you already have.

Hardbody Song of The Day: Hollywood Undead – Undead

This song won’t be for everyone but hey what song is? I ran across the song “Undead” by Hollywood Undead last week and it’s now on my workout play list. IFBB Figure Pro Erin Stern, who is currently training for her pro debut at the Arnold, tells me this her type of music.

WHO KNEW? Now you do.

Photoshoot Videos: Fitness Apparel

Check out a couple of the latest industry photo shoot videos. The first features the Fizeek Brazil clothing line, shot with Terry Goodlad. The second is for Better Bodies a clothing line out of Sweden, shot by Pavall Ythjall.
