Seattle Mist Adds IFBB Fitness Pro Sandy Grant to its Team

Congratulations to IFBB Fitness Pro Sandy Grant for making the final cut this week. Sandy is now part of the Lingerie Football team in Seattle, the Seattle Mist. I caught up with Sandy this morning and asked her how she felt about making it on the team. Sandy excitedly shared, “I am SO Excited to be on the team! I’ve hardly been able to sleep since Wednesday when I found out I made the team. I had a lot of fun at the tryouts. This weekend, I’ll be at the Seattle Mist Mini Camp.”

Sandy’s sister, Shannon Gill gave me a heads up on some other news surrounding the Seattle Team. Shannon tells me, “One of our team (SG2Victory fitness/figure team that Sandy & I run), members, Amy Jae Springer also tried out and succeed to grab her own spot! AJ has done NPC Fitness competitions, is an amazing and (winning!) boxer and is venturing into Kickboxing! She owns her own Fitness Studio here in downtown Bellevue, WA called Extreme Fitness too!” That’s pretty cool! Congrats to both ladies.

Jeff Taylor… Waterboy?

Today’s photo of the day comes via the Denver Dream Tryouts. NPC Colorado Chairman Jeff Taylor was at yesterday’s events where he was auditioning for the Waterboy position. No, no I’m just kidding. A strong gust of wind came through the area and sent plastic cups sailing. Jeff, being the helpful guy he is, picked up the cups before they found their way all over the stadium. Me being the rovering photographer I am, of course, had to snap a shot of the action.

Jeff is often backstage at national NPC shows organizing and orchestrating the trophy presentations. If you’re in Colorado you know that his shows are the best fitness, figure and bodybuilding events there are. Those of you competing at a national level NPC show just look for the really tall guy backstage and hey he might even help ya out with that needed cup of water.

IFBB Pro Bodybuilder Lisa Marie Bickels – 3 weeks out from debut

I spotted IFBB Pro Bodybuilder, Lisa Marie Bickels yesterday in an unexpected location… the lingerie football league tryouts in Denver. Lisa is three weeks out from her pro debut and wanted to try her luck at the new football team in Denver. Lisa impressed the scouts with her arm during an early practice as she continued to whiz the ball over the heads of other ladies.

lisabickels.jpg

She showed off her running abilities when she sped off for a touchdown during the scrimmage. No word on if Lisa made the team as of yet but we’ll keep ya posted.

Denver Dream Tryouts – Photos & Report

Yesterday, the Lingerie Football League’s Denver Dream held another round of tryouts. The NPC & IFBB women are representing well. Just days off their showing in Orlando, Heather Mae French and Jesse Palmer were running, catching and tackling to defend their positions on the team. I was told by the league’s creative director that Heather is one of the smallest girls on the team but also one of, if not theee fastest. Heather ran her 40 yard time in under 5.0. Anyone who is familiar with 40 times knows that if you are below a 5.0 second time you are flying.

stacey.jpg
Stacey tries her hand at the QB position.
I haven’t received the “official” word as to who the new team members will be just yet but it looks like Stacey Oster could be the new quarterback for the team. Stacey is currently preparing for the NPC Contra Costa. She was in great shape and had a heckuva an arm. There was another woman who will battle her for the QB spot both were impressive in the tryouts. NPC competitor Chantelle Schwandner strained her calf muscle early on in the tryouts and unfortunately sidelined her from the rest of the events. Also spotted were NPC Figure competitors Kari Abt, Jenny Lewis and Shawna Wittrock. IFBB Pro bodybuilder, Lisa Bickels was also at the event where she showed off her speed and took a hand-off in for a touchdown during the scrimmage. Lisa is three weeks out from her pro debut at the New York Pro.

Overall there were a number of impressive hardbody females on the field. Shannon Martin is quite the running-back and has some wheels. Check out the entire team and updates on the team at lflus.com/denverdream. Yours truly is the team’s “official photographer” and yes poor, poor me.

Check out the slide show with all the photos from yesterday’s event. If you have a short attention span like me and don’t want to watch the entire video you can see all the photos in the gallery here.

Stay tuned for more team updates as the head into Mini-Camp today & Sunday.

A song I hadn’t heard until this week but pretty good jam. HURT’s WARS

I think of all the days in my life,
Where I could have done something more.
Ya, I remember the days in my life,
Where I should have done something more.

Nashville’s Got a New Star

valinterview.jpg
Nashville Figure Star Valerie Haines

You won’t read about this woman singing at the Grand Ole Opry. Nah, that’s of little interest to IFBB Figure Pro, Valerie Haines. While belting it out with the likes of Dolly Parton may not Valerie Haines forte, putting together an impressive pro figure physique is. Last weekend Valerie took the stge in Orlando where she made quite the statement. Valerie placed 6th out of a competitive field of 28 at the Europa Show of Champions. It’d been a few months since we last saw Val, so I caught up with her to see what she’s been up to.

Where ya been Val and why the time off since your last show?

I wanted to make some significant changes and I knew I had to take some time off to do so…and I think I did. My last show prior to the Europa was 2007 NY Pro where I placed 12th.

I’d agree you did make some significant changes. Do you feel it was the time off that helped?
Absolutely. I feel like I “rebuilt” my physique in a way. I am THRILLED with the results too!

I didn’t see you sporting any bags of asparagus this time – did you make any changes to your diet or training since you last competed?
LOL…That picture is classic Isaac! Actually, I did change my prep diet quite a bit this time around. My cardio was less intense and I did very low to no carbs throughout my prep. I maintained a high fat content and it seemed to work well for me.

Did you diet longer than usual or how long was your prep for this show?
I didnt prep any longer than I usually do. I always start at 16 weeks out. I did incorporate a second cardio session up until about 6 weeks out this time around. But thats the only thing I did differently.

Are you going to jump into another show or enjoy the summer and hit a later event?
I am going to take a SMALL break, not like the last break. Believe me, I have a fire inside me now and I will be back. Look for me at the Kentucky Pro in November!

What’s your occupation besides being a Pro Figure competitor?
Scheduling Coordinator for a dental office

So, do you notice people’s teeth first?

LOL… Actually, yes I do! that’s the first thing I see.

Congratulations Valerie. We’ll look for ya in the fall on the Kentucky stage.
Thank you.

See more photos of Valerie from the Orlando Pro show here.

On Top of the Fitness World – Monica Brant

This is one of my favorite photos I’ve ever shot. Sometimes a concept comes together better than you could ever plan. To some this photo might be an image of some woman on a set of stairs.

That’s not quite how I see it and you’ll have to excuse me for getting a little deep in meaning here. I see Monica Brant, an icon in the fitness industry at the top of her game. Sometimes it’s lonely and empty at the top with feelings of being chained in. Monica has climbed the fitness stairs and found a level of success most can only dream of achieving. So what does one do when at the top and accomplished so many things?

moknows.jpg
Monica Brant still on top of the fitness world.

Only Mo knows what her next move will be but rest assured she will forever be one of the fitness industry’s best.

Zivile Raudoniene Fitness & Nutrition Seminar

If you’re in the New York area mark your calendar for Monday, April 27th to meet Figure International Champ, Zivile Raudoniene. Zivile will be making her first  appearance for Gaspari Nutrition at Bev Francis Powerhouse Gym in New York on Monday from 4-7pm. She’ll be prsenting a FREE fitness and nutrition seminar as well as free Gaspari samples. Nice to see the Figure champ out and about helping the industry.

If anyone attends let us know how it goes and send along a pic.

Johnson Sisters Perform Together at Emerald Cup

IFBB Fitness Pros (and sisters) Tanji & Safiya Johnson teamed up for a guest performance at the 2009 BSN Emerald Cup. Hardbody.com’s Ron Avidan said the performance was “great and interesting.”

Another Cover for Jessica & Peter

The blonde bombers from the South have found their way onto the cover of another magazine, this month it’s Muscle Mag International. Congrats! If you’re attending FIBO this weekend stop by the Optimum Nutrition Booth and say hello to Jess.

Fate Smiled at Destiny

Slowing it down a little bit this Thursday. Natalie Merchant kicks some ass in a different way with this live performance of “Wonder“. This is raw and real talent. I dig it.

People see me,
I’m a challenge
To your balance.
I’m over your heads;
How I confound you
And astound you
to know I must be one of the wonders,
God’s own creation,
And as far as you see you can offer me
no explanation.

ALRI’s Troy Johnson The Next Swami?

I offered up $100 to anyone who could correctly predict the top 5 in order. Troy Johnson who is very familiar with the Figure scene came the closest with his predictions. He called the top three in exact order which is impressive. He even called Inga as the dark horse and Erin Stern in the top five. I can’t hold his fifth place prediction of Kristin against him. I’ve got your first drink at the next show Troy. Nice work.

Troy’s Top Five Figure
1- Nicole Wilkins-Lee
2- Heather Mae French
3- Monica Brant
4- Erin Stern
5- Kristin Nunn
Dark horse’s- Inga Neverauskaite and Cea Anna Kerr 😉

American Gladiators Europe

Let’s hope the “American Gladiators” does better in Europe than it did in the United States. The revived American Gladiators were never quite the same as the original. IFBB Figure Pro Jane Awad shares that she is part of an American Gladiators’ spin-off. Jane’s apparently not only starring in the show but serving as the co-executive producer.

WTF is This Twitter Thing About?

Many of you have started “tweeting” and are now part of twitter. It took me a little while to figure out what the deal was with it and why I needed it. I don’t NEED it but it is a helpful way to get news out in a quick fashion. If you’re still wondering what twitter is all about or even if you’re part of the tweetworld – check out this very informative and helpful page. This covers pretty much everything you ever wanted or needed to know about twitter.

NPC Bikini in Orlando

The NPC Bikini is still finding it’s way and in my opinion we won’t know what it is truly all about until the NPC JR USA, NPC JR NATIONALS and the NPC USA competitions. There pro cards will be rewarded and the judges will send the message as to what a pro bikini physique should look like. This is just my opinion but the only NPC bikini winner I have been impressed with and what I think should be rewarded has been the Arnold winner, Ali Sonoma. The judges till have to judge what is in front of them and award a winner on that day.

Mariza Prince has done well for herself by getting published in numerous magazines. You might have noticed her as “the box girl” from the Gaspari ads. She took top honors at the Orlando NPC show in the bikini class last weekend. Is this what the NPC Bikini is all about? Should this be the phyisque that is rewarded a pro card? That’s not for me to decide but personally I’d say no. I still go back to the FLEX Bikini model search winners as the standard to which should be rewarded. Again, the judges can only judge what is on stage and I have no problem with Mariza winning this show however the question remains will this be what is awarded a pro card next month? We’ll have to wait and see.

Beach Volleyball Next for Nunn?

No, IFBB Figure Pro Kristin Nunn won’t be hanging up the posing suit any time soon. I caught up with Kristin for a photo shoot a couple days after the Orlando Pro and Kristin played the part of a beach volleyball girl. Here’s one of the shots from our shoot.

Kristin has her sights set on the California Pro for her next competition.

Dirty Little Girl

Burn Halo has a pretty rock’n tune with “Dirty Little Girl“.

Wednesday Weirdness – The King & Sponge Bob?

This is just weird. The Burger King dude still creeps me out and now he’s apparently teamed up with Sponge Bob Square Pants. We wonder why kids are fat today – entice them with their favorite TV characters and get their parents to buy them the new toy.

Throw in a little Sir Mix-a-Lot and you officially have a whacky commercial. “Booty is Booty.” Huh?

Miss USA Contestants

I don’t know about you but some of the Miss USA Contestants look like they could be NPC Bikini competitors. A few of the women were sporting abs and a nice, fit, tone physique. What do you think?

Random Thoughts From Orlando Pro Show Weekend

A few random thoughts from my nearly week long stay in Orlando and the Europa Show of Champions. The Good, The Bad and The in Between…
• The venue and hotels were conveniently located from the airport. The airport itself was easy and affordable to fly into.

• The hotel staff didn’t seem to have much information on the schedule of events or shuttle service to the venue. I was at the second host hotel and it was a nice hotel but the staff seemed fairly clueless on the entire event.

• The show ran much quicker than it did in Dallas. There were two less events for the pros, so that obviously helped.

• Orlando was a good place to hold an event like this, my only hope is that it’s near another show to draw in more competitors – primarily for the men and not the women.

• Note to Self: Don’t procrastinate and leave late for the airport. I missed my flight to Orlando because I didn’t pack the night before and hit traffic. I missed my flight back (which sucked because only one flight back on my airline) because I didn’t allow enough time to return the rental car.
• The lighting improved for the NPC show and the night show of the pros but I hope every promoter can do the competitors justice by properly lighting the stage. I know every venue is different and it’s a challenge to often work with the given venue however if the competitors put in the time and effort to attend your show, they deserve to show off their hard work with proper lighting.

• A number of women commented to me that they were dissappointed in the evening show. Every competitor had to get in their two-piece outfits but only the top three went on stage. By that point in time the scores are tabulated and there is no reason (in my opinion) to make every competitor change into their two-piece if they are not going to all walk on stage. Either bring them out on stage one more time for another pose or inform them that they were not in the top placings.

• The vendors/supplement companies seemed pleased with the amount of traffic that the expo received. I was photographing the NPC and Pro events which didn’t allow for much time to hit the expo. What part I did, it seemed to run much the same as the Dallas show.

• Promoting shows is often a thankless job. Ed and Betty were able to duplicate their efforts in Orlando that they’ve done numerous times in Texas. It’s one thing to put on a show where you live, it’s an entirely different animal when you are organizing a show in another state. Overall I felt the did a good job. There are a couple little details I’d like to see change – like the lighting but aside from that it was a great showcase of talent with the women’s events.

• Erin Riley impressed me with her routine. It is choreographed to her music perfectly, when she hits a move in her routine it is timed with the beat.

• Myriam Capes is one to watch come Olympia time. She’s changed her physique a great deal and has one of the best routines you’ll ever see. She could be a top 6 finisher in September.

• Mindi O’Brien also had an awesome routine and did a great job of entertaining the crowd.

• Shannon Meteraud made it two in a row. Impressive. Especially when you consider she is 40 and able to do moves that women half her age are unable to do.

• Nicole Wilkins-Lee is definitely one of the stars of the future and it looks like her time arrived in Orlando.

• Heather Mae French looked her best ever and solidified herself as a top 5 competitor in any show she enters.

• Erin Stern has a great, athletic, healthy look that will continue to improve as she competes. She’s a great example of what a taller figure competitor should look like.

• NPC Bikini is still finding it’s way. There weren’t many competitors in the show so it’s hard to critique it. The top three in the Tall Bikini class stood out to me and should be able to hold their own on the National stage.

Muscle Girls Inc. Interview

Tune in tonight to hear Fitness Champ Shannon Meteraud as well as an appearance from yours truly on Muscle Girls Inc. Krissy Chin and Collette Nelson asked me a number of great questions during the interview. Listen to it tonight at 7pm EST. on rxmuscle.com.

Flying Stern – No Cape Needed

I had a fun shoot with IFBB Figure Pro Erin Stern last weekend, the day after her fifth place finish at the Orlando Pro Show. It was like having a sibling who could do a special trick. Erin’s “special trick” was high jumping and I encouraged her to “do it again.” It was so cool to see her flying over the bar with ease and photographing it. Erin was a trooper and we did the shoot from a number of angles and a number of times. Here’s one shot of her clearing the bar with ease.

Monica Brant & Erin Stern Hit the Track

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to shoot with Fitness Icon Monica Brant and rising star, Erin Stern. Monica finished third in the Orlando Pro while Erin took home fifth. They were both a pleasure to work with and we had a great time shooting. Make-up & Stylist Laurie St. Michael took great care of Monica and if you’re looking for someone who knows what they are doing when it comes to make-up, Laurie is your girl. Erin was demonstrating her leaping abilities and holy gazel this woman can jump.

All That Remains: Two Weeks

Happy Monday Morning. Today’s tune…. All That Remains: Two Weeks

I wanted nothing but for that trust again
and brick by brick you would take it
You feared of phantoms and none exist but you
you still saw fit to destroy it

Europa Show Of Champions Results

Check out the score sheets on IFBBpro.com for a complete breakdown. I will be providing photos from the finals as well as the fitness routines later today or tomorrow. Congrats to all. Nicole Wilkins-Lee edged out Heather Mae French by one point to win her first pro show. Shannon Meteraud made it two wins in a row, while the two Canadian Fitness women rocked the house… Myriam Capes and Mindi O’Brien brought down the house with their routines.
