IFBB Figure Pro Erin Stern – Gunnin’ For Numero Uno

Closing in on her second Figure Olympia, Erin Stern was kind enough to take time out of her carb depletion and trips to the gym for an interview. Erin is considered by many to be the biggest threat to Nicole Wilkin-Lee’s Figure crown. Find out what’s on Erin’s iPod and what she’s eating on Bodybuilding.com.

Excerpt:

What advice do you have for other women who are wanting to compete and emulate what you’ve achieved?
If this is your passion, go for it! Make a business plan, market yourself, work hard, then work harder, and always be professional. You can learn something from everyone you meet. Be specific with your goals – and if you can do it yourself, great – if not, don’t be afraid to get help!

Tianna Ta Interview: Tackling Her First Olympia

IFBB Bikini Pro Tianna Ta shares a bit about herself and some tips on how she nabbed a sponsorship in the fitness industry. Tianna qualified for the Olympia at the Pittsburgh Pro and will look to make her presence known at the first ever Bikini Olympia next Friday. Check out the full interview on Bodybuilding.com.

Excerpt:

What advice would you offer women in regards to shooting and picking a photographer?
Research, research, research! When I started modeling, there was one thing that I always kept in the back of my mind: my morals! That will never change. I always researched a photographer before I worked with them, to make sure that I liked his/her style. Just because someone owns a camera, it does not make them a photographer. Just as someone who takes pictures to post on Facebook, does not make them a model. Credibility takes you a long way. I never wanted to and never will work with a photographer who has a bad rep. This industry is not as big as it seems and girls talk to each other. Anyone who has multiple bad recommendations, I will never work with, so ask previous models who they have worked with and how their experience was. Also, if you are looking to shoot with someone, ask the photographer to send you their release before hand so you can read it. It has never happened to me, but I know girls who were given releases after they shot with a photographer, and if they didn’t sign it, the girls would not receive their pictures. So don’t let them waste your time, and don’t waste theirs!

Nicole Nagrani – The IFBB’s Youngest Bikini Pro Heads to the Olympia

I caught up with Nicole Nagrani days before heading to the first ever Bikini Olympia. Find out how the youngest IFBB Bikni Pro (only 18) juggles dieting, training and an accelerated Med Program. She’s not your average 18 year old.

Excerpt:

Some people say girls should be 18 or older to compete in the bikini division. Do you agree?
I have to say that I am neutral on this topic. Personally, I competed in teen figure before 18. Since Bikini is a relatively new division, I don’t think people actually realize that Bikini athletes train as hard as the other athletes in the bodybuilding industry. I know I work just as hard as my mother, if not harder and she is a figure competitor. The subject of being young and competing in this division only becomes an issue because of the stereotype that comes along with it. People think it’s just pretty girls strutting around the stage, but it’s really not. I think people need to look at this division as a sport, instead of a pageant, and then when it comes to age it really will not be such a controversial issue because people will realize that it’s girls walking around the stage showing off their hard work and not just being flirtatious posers.

Hardbody Hot Seat with IFBB Bikini Pro Zara Pineda-Boorder

Zara Pineda-Boorder was a relative unknown a month ago but now she’s making waves in the bikini division. Zara took home top honors at the 2010 IFBB North American Championships in the bikini division. She’s wasting no time getting into the mix of the IFBB Pro League. Zara will make her debut this weekend at the IFBB Detroit Pro. Get to know a bit more about Zara and what it’s like competing in Canada vs the United States.

Name:
Zara Pineda-Boorder

Born in:
Manila, Philippines

Currently live in:
Toronto, Canada

Occupation:
Contest Posing Coach, Fitness Trainer, Real Estate Entrepreneur

How many bikini shows have you competed in before the North Americans?
I did 2 National Canadian Shows – CBBF Natural Physique Championships (2010, April) placed 2nd & CBBF Canada Nationals (2010, Aug) placed 4th.

What’s the biggest difference between the two when it comes to diet and training?
When I trained for figure, my goal at the time was to bring up my upper body. I trained to make my back, arms shoulders bigger and to improve the shape of my legs. I worked on that for a few years until I felt satisfied with my overall physique change. When I switched to Bikini, I had to streamline my physique this time and make everything tight. I was used to doing 2 cardios, 7 days a week, along with 5 days a week strength training. So for Bikini, I eased back a little on the cardio (so I don’t lose my curves) and I focused more on full body circuits 4 days a week and cardio 2x a day but not for as long.

With diet, I basically kept it the same. I eat 90% organic, and have been eating this way for the past 5 years. It’s important that I get the most antibiotic free, preservative free, and non-gmo or hormone grown foods. I eat lots of wild caught fish, and grass fed, free range chicken and beef and eggs. I have fruits and veggies and I love, love love hemp oil. That’s basically my diet… plus some almonds and buckwheat rice cakes for snacks.

Why the switch from figure to bikini?
Although I loved competing in figure, I felt good about switching to Bikini when it was introduced and I did every Bikini competition within the CBBF/OPA stream, to qualify for Nationals. I think it suits my personality better and I placed 1sts and 2nds at regional and provincial shows leading up to the National shows.

Was it hard to come back to competing after taking a break?
I had a nice relaxing time when I took a break from competing and I’m grateful to have had that time with my husband to travel with him and his work adventures. During that time I also penned a 400 page novel, co-owned a gym in Makati, Philippines, got married, studied Russian, in Moscow and relaxed on my diet and ate as I pleased.
Coming back to the stage was thrilling. It was a two year break and my body responded well and craved the intensity of 7 day a week training again. I was happy to be back. And when Bikini came, I was even happier.

What’s the biggest difference between competing in Canada and the United States?
In Canada, Pro Cards aren’t awarded as often as in the United States. Exposure for IFBB stream competitions aren’t as mention in Canadian Media Magazines, as are the lesser known Federations that are present in Canada. Media mags seem to be tied to these claimed “Natural” shows more than the IFBB Pro-status granting Federation. I think appealing to the masses with these federation’s amateur shows, only waters down the competition and subsequently, the athlete’s true competitive spirit for the sport itself, is lost to the glam that most of their competitors, only compete for. I might get flack for that, but I only see it that way so I’m not gonna overlook that and speak against it.

There are only a couple of opportunities to turn pro in Canada. Do you get any push-back or negativity when you compete for a pro card in the States?
No, I didn’t get any negativity when I requested my letter for the North Americans. I was actually qualified to do this show after competing at the National Natural’s in April. I was told that the States would “love me” and I guess winning the overall and my pro card in Cleveland, proved that theory right. I just always thought that Canada was still a bit too reserved for my personality on stage… so while, I did and placed well and mainly in the top 3 at my previous shows, I was just a little bit “more” on stage for them to know what to do with me. hahaa…but I felt right at home on the American stage 🙂

Do you think the media in Canada gives women a fair shake when it comes to publicity?
There are way too many Canadian Female athletes that are so under-rated; from bodybuilding, fitness, figure and bikini. I think the proof is in the pudding, when most of the females featured in the Canadian mags compete for fame and not for the sport. Some females want only this and that saddens me. I don’t care for being in a magazine because of anything else than being a winning, consistent athlete in the sport. But that’s just me.

Do you find it difficult to get the same amount of exposure as the American competitors?
I already knew that Americans get more exposure in entertainment/fitness industry than Canadians. I’ve learned that over the years so I know now how to handle it.

Why the IFBB over other organization?
When I used to read the fitness magazines, I admired girls like Jenny Worth, Monica Brant, Julie Wallis and Dale Tomita.

You were “unknown” to most in the United States, yet took home top honors at the 2010 North American Championships. Do you feel you’d get the same exposure had you not competed in that show?
I know that I wouldn’t have had any exposure had I not come to Cleveland for the NA’s. My goal was to get my IFBB Pro status and I just did what I had to because, no one was going to hand me my win or my exposure in Canada. I really felt I stuck to what I really knew I could achieve, and didn’t stop until I did.

You’re wasting no time getting into the big leagues, what made you decide to jump into the Detroit show?
I’m doing as many shows as I can til the end of the competitive season 2010. I’ll take a break during the holidays and hibernate. But I feel like I just can’t stop now. I’ve come too far to get here so this is where I can grow as a competitor and compete with the best of them. It’s what I’ve always wanted to attain so I’m going for it!

When you’re not eating and training what might someone find you doing?
I love nothing more than traveling, and spending time with my close family and friends. I also invest in real estate with my husband and enjoy that as well.

How important has it been to have a supportive husband?
We support each other and it has always been that way in our relationship. We’ve been together 10+ years, and married for 5, so he’s been with me since the beginning of my competitive career and through the highs and lows with me. When I’m able to travel with him and his work (film business) I do and support him and when he can be
there for my competitive schedule, he’s always there. There are times when our schedules don’t sync up, but we’re there more than not. This is soo important in any relationship and without the total support, it’s difficult to succeed in the relationship and in the competitions.

What advice do you have for other Canadian women when it come to competing?
Do what’s in your heart no matter how much work you need to put into it and how much you need to sacrifice year after year, because when you finally reach your goal, it feels soo sweet!! Trust me!

Anyone you’d like to thank?
Everyone who has always supported what I do day in and day out.

How can people find you or find out more about you?
New website coming out soon, soon. FaceBook (search my name) is my place of dwelling until my new site comes out, but feel free to browse my outdated website in the meantime. lol 🙂

Thanks Zara and all the best this weekend!

High Fructose Corn Syrup Wants to Be Corn Sugar

The makers of high fructose corn syrup feel that the product has been getting a bad rap lately. So what do they want to do about it? Change the name to corn sugar. Pretty sweet, right? Meh. Not so much. It is still the same product but the makers are out to market it in a new manner. They’re thinking is “sugar is sugar”. Meaning your body can’t tell the difference between can sugar or high fructose corn syrup.

Who’s behind the renaming movement? It’s pretty obvious the corn industry is but in this case it’s the Corn Refiners Association.

corn sugar

The answer? Cut back on the sugar of any kind. USA TODAY has an article about the name chance that’s worth reading.

Buff Mother Wins Train with Ava Sweepstakes

Congratulations to Michelle Berger aka Buff Mother for winning the grand price in the 2010 Train with Ava sweepstakes. The training session will take place at Gold’s Gym on Thursday, September 23rd for Gaspari.tv. Michelle also receives a VIP ticket to all Olympia Weekend events plus $500 spending money.

Props to Gaspari for offering this unique opportunity to train with one of the IFBB’s popular female athletes.

Last Chance to Qualify at IFBB Detroit Pro Bikini

This weekend 15 IFBB Bikini Pros will take the stage in Detroit, Michigan. Three Olympia qualifications are up for grabs and only Jessica Jessie & Bianca Binno are qualified in the line up. Figure Olympia Champ, Davana Medina will make her return to the stage in the new bikini division.

Davana has been training with Ms. Fitness Olympia, Adela Garcia since announcing her return earlier this year. When I spoke with Adela over the weekend she told me Davana was looking good and expected her to do well. Davana has to land in the top three if she hopes to compete in the first ever bikini Olympia. As a past Figure Champion, she could compete in Figure but not Bikini. Olympians are only eligible to compete in the division they won.

Dina Al-Sabah will look to move up from last weekend’s fifth place finish and has a solid chance here. Bianca Binno doesn’t have the most muscle on stage but does have a pleasing bikini body. She’ll look to take some momentum into the Olympia and the pressure is off her since she’s already qualified. Nicole Coleman turned pro in Figure at the 2009 Team Universe and has competed as a pro in Figure but will make the switch to bikini here. Melissa Frabbiele will make a return to the stage and is another woman who is trying her hand at the bikini division. Melissa has held her own in Figure competitions but how will she do in Bikini? Janet Harding gets the award for most persistent bikini competitor of the year. I think she’s competed in more bikini shows than any woman. Jessica Jessie is looking to snag her first win before heading to Vegas next week. She has a strong chance at getting the win here but it won’t be easy. Michelle Lamb will make her pro debut and has one of the better bikini booties in the line up. Christy Merritt took home one of the two pro cards from this year’s 2010 NPC JR USA and will be making her debut. Noemi Olah of Hungary was the Arnold Amateur Bikini B Class winner. She’s a stunning blonde who could turn a few heads at this show. Zara Pineda-Boorder is also wasting no time getting into the mix. She achieved IFBB Pro status at the North Americans just a couple weeks ago. Look for her to represent Canada well in this contest. Beth White and Michelle Lamb both turned pro at the 2010 NPC Jr Nationals, a contest where Jessica Jessie took top honors.

This is the last chance for bikini competitors to qualify for next week’s Bikini Olympia. Someone will leave Detroit with their first IFBB Pro Bikini win. Who will it be? Follow the action on here and twitter as we cover the event. Those of you following along via twitter we’ll be using #IFBBdet as the hash tag.

IFBB Tournament of Champions Bikini Results & Review

The 2010 IFBB Tournament of Champions took place in Culver City, California over the weekend. Promoter, Jon Lindsay did another tremendous job with this contest which was held in conjunction with a NPC event. It was refreshing to see a large turnout (18) from the pro bikini competitors. The top three women qualified for next weekend’s first ever Bikini Olympia. Sonia Gonzales notched her third win in the bikini division. Her only loss was in Pittsburgh to Nathalia Melo. Rookies Brooke Mora and Anca Marcus both qualified in their first pro shows.

Below are the results of the show and my opinions on the competition.

1. Sonia Gonzales – Sonia has definitely improved her physique since the first show. She’s not the curviest competitor in the division but does present a nice overall package. I’d like to see her improve her presentation a bit for the Olympia but it was an improvement from Pittsburgh. She has to be considered a top five Olympia threat with three wins to her credit in the division.

2. Brooke Mora – Brooke made an impressive debut and stood out beyond just being one of the taller competitors. She has a great look and a very pleasing physique. I wouldn’t have argued if she was in the first place spot at the end of the night. She has a pretty long torso compared to the other women and it will be interesting to see how she stacks up in the Olympia. She should land in the top 10 and potentially the top 6.

3. Anca Marcus – Anca has a nice physique and as expected made an immediate impact in her pro debut. She snagged third place by just a couple of points over Zhanna and Dina. I’d like to see her slow her posing down just a bit but overall a nice job.

4. Zhanna Rotar – Zhanna was definitely improved from her first bikini competition earlier in the year. It’s nothing personal but I didn’t see her in the top five at this show. I think she has a little too much muscle still for the division and a little thick in the waist compared to the other women.  Props to her for improving and getting the nod for a top five spot though.

5. Dina Al-Sabah – Dina continues to refine her physique for the bikini division and this was the best she’s looked since returning to the stage. I wouldn’t have argued with her being in the top three here and she was 2 points away from it. She does carry some muscle in her legs but I don’t see her being too much different from Amanda Latona in that department.

6. Jennifer Deitrick – Jennifer has a nice body and a killer bikini booty. The only thing I notice with Jennifer is when she presents it doesn’t look genuine. It comes across like it’s a fake smile and not one that is natural.

7. Christina Vargas – Christina looked more at home in the bikini division than Figure. She looked a little nervous in her bikini debut and could have presented in a more relaxed manner. If she improves her presentation and brings a little tighter booty I could see her moving up into a top five spot.

8. Vanessa Prebyl – Vanessa wasted no time getting into the thick of things in the pro ranks. She turned pro at the JR USAs and had an impressive debut. Maybe a little more roundness to her booty but overall she has a nice bikini look.

9. Jessica Clay – Jessica has a good bikini look and if she can bring a tighter booty to the stage could move up. When she first comes on stage she seems a bit nervous but by the end of her posing she seems more at ease. I’d like to see her bring a bit more confidence to the stage to help her stand out a little more.

10. Michelle Gullett – An attractive woman and when she smiles you’re drawn to her. I thought her bikini suit bottoms were a bit too big in the back and not flattering to her butt. She needs to come in a bit tighter in the booty area to move up in the placings.

11. Nicole Moneer-Guerrero – Nicole has improved her presentation with every show. She needed to come in a bit tigher in the glutes and hamstrings to move up.

12. Rachel Labender – Rachel has a cute look. I wasn’t crazy about her suit at the USAs and I had similar thoughts on her choice here. The top wasn’t flattering and the bottoms had a some distracting metal thingies. Yes, thingies. She needed to be a bit tighter from the back as well.

13. Kat Holmes
– This was probably the best Kat has looked as a pro but her lower half still holds her back. She’s battling the genetics of being very hippy. Her suit looked a bit small and almost like a thong in some poses.

14. Cathy Miller – Cathy also wasted no time getting into the pro ranks after turning pro at the NPC USAs. She’s a pretty woman with a nice looks. She’s a little straight up and down in structure. If she can pose herself with the illusion of more curviness I could see her move up. I think a different suit cut to her bottom may help with that look from the back as well.

15. Michele D’Angona – One of the shorter competitors Michele has the challenge of not looking blocky in the waist. She needed to be tighter and present her angles better. Popping your hip to the judges will make you look bigger, she needed to pop her hip away from the judges to create an illusion of being smaller.

16. Jennifer Celeste – Taking over a year off since turning pro this was Jennifer’s debut. She missed the mark this time and came in off with her conditioning. She’s a pretty woman but needs to come in much tighter her next show if she hopes to move up.

17. Natalie Pennington – Natalie has an exotic look and is qualified for the Olympia with her second place finish in New Zealand. She’s pretty flat in the booty department and it wasn’t tight enough to move up into a higher spot. I think the white suit earlier in the year looked better on her.

18. Karen Mullarkey – Karen made the move to bikini from Figure for the first time and unfortunately it wasn’t the finished I’m sure she’d hoped for. I would have had her a few places higher but her back side wasn’t quite tight enough.

Check out photos on FLEXonline.com and IFBBpro.com from this competition.

Hardbody Figure Olympia Poll

The Figure Olympia will be here in no time and Nicole Wilkins-Lee will look to defend her title. A number of women have their sights set on the champ and will look to dethrone her in Las Vegas. Davana Medina and Jenny Lynn successfully defended their Figure Olympia titles, can Nicole?

Many feel Erin Stern has the best chance at the title but what do you think? Will Nicole repeat or will someone else be the next Figure Olympia queen?

Ladies First – Reigning Female Olympians Featured in FLEX Magazine

The reigning Fitness Olympia, Ms. Olympia and Figure Olympia met up at Gold’s Gym Venice for a one-of-a-kind workout. Adela Garcia, Iris Kyle and Nicole Wilkins-Lee blasted their back and biceps for a FLEX magazine feature. The photos and article are currently featured in the new issue of the magazine and it’s one worth checking out. It’s a cool story and the first time a meet-up of this type has ever taken place.

You gain a sense of the women’s humor and personality in the feature. Each of the ladies have their own style of training and you’ll learn a variety of things from them. It’s a fun read.

G’s Tip of the Week – Natural Nuts

This week Gina has a tip related to every (well most) competitor’s favorite “approved” food… Peanut Butter.

Are you a nut butter lover… aren’t we all!!?? Choosing between almond butter and peanut butter, opt for the almond butter as it is alkaline and has six times the calcium, three times the amount of Vitamin E and twice the iron of peanut butter. Regardless of which you eat, always be sure to always by the Natural version which should contain nothing but ground up nuts and often salt.

Gina Aliotti-Silva
Nutrition, Fitness & Lifestyle Consultant
www.ginaaliotti.com

On a side note. I agree with Gina on the natural nuts. My favorite all natural brand is Justin’s Nut Butter out of Boulder, Colorado. They have super convienent travel packs that work great for competitors and they won’t be taken away from you while traveling.

Meet IFBB Bikini Pro Brooke Mora

This weekend Brooke Mora will make her IFBB Pro debut. She earned pro status at this year’s NPC USA and is wasting not time jumping into the big leagues. Brooke is considered by many, myself included, to be a top contender at this weekend’s IFBB Tournament of Champions. Despite being carb depleted, she joined us in our Hardbody Hot Seat and shared a bit more about herself.

Name: Brooke Mora

Currently Reside in: Los Angeles, CA

Born Raised in: Sylmar, CA

Occupation: Director DVD/Blu-Ray Production

How did you get into directing DVD/Blu-Ray Production? I was just given the opportunity through a friend that was looking for someone to help his department. I went in not knowing a thing and 10 years later… came out a wizz-kid! lol (kinda)

July 2nd your birthday? Yes

One day away from a REALLY COOL birthday – mine’s the 3rd. We should celebrate next year!!!

Did you play any sports in high school?
Varsity Softball and Cheerleading. Yes, cheerleading is a SPORT! haha!

Are you you a girly-girl or tomboy?
Honestly, I’m the perfect mix of both. I love to throw on a sexy dress, heels and get all dolled up for a fun night out, but I can just as easily throw a mean spiral in a friendly game of two-hand touch. Well maybe not so friendly… I am very competitive!!!

How did you get started with competing in bikini? Well, I’ve always been active and athletic. I have done 3 triathlons and have always been comfortable in the gym, but it wasn’t until my friend Beatrice Andrade (fellow NPC Bikini competitor) suggested I really train hardcore for a competition. I owe it all to her. Being new to the world of competition I just thought you had to be really “buff”.  But Bee informed me that there was a new division called Bikini.  Being that I love a challenge, very competitive and love the stage, I said “OMG, I’m in.”  Bee got me in touch with her trainer IFBB Bikini PRO Michele D’Angona and I signed up with her on the spot. The rest is history!!!

What’s your favorite part of a triathlon? Well, biking was my favorite because it was my easiest with these thunder thighs.

What’s your favorite part about competing?
My favorite part about competing is being on that stage, feeling confident knowing that all of your training and dedication has paid off! It has truly changed my life!

What’s the biggest misconception you hear from people when you tell them you’re a bikini pro? They usually say but you’re not that buff… lol! Then I have to go into this long explanation. lol!!

You recently shot with Muscle & Fitness – how did that go? Yes, I shot for the Muscle & Fitness HOTBOD spread set to come out in the December 2010. issue  The M&F team was a complete pleasure to work with.  It was so relaxing and comfortable. I felt I could really let myself shine for the camera. Photographer John Russo was amazing. Leith O’Leary and Chris Hobrecker of Muscle & Fitness were so accommodating, the absolute best!!  Keep your eyes open for my issue on stands in DECEMBER!!!

How was it different from other shoots you’ve done? Well, I would have to say that everyone was so professional and organized.  They knew exactly what they wanted and gave me great direction. I wasn’t waiting around for hours. It was awesome!!

Did you do anything different for your pro debut then other shows? Being that is it a couple days until my pro debut I think you’ll see that I’m a bit leaner in my lower body come Saturday. I’ve also played around with different poses, so my stage presence will definitely be a bit more playful! 😉

Will you be downing champagne if you qualify for the Olympia? Ooooohhh ya, you better believe it! But only one night of celebrating is allowed because Olympia is only 2 weeks away! Watch your camera it might get wet from all the champagne being sprayed.

Where can people find more information on you? follow me on Twitter.com/brookemora or on Facebook.com/brookemora.

Thanks Brooke and Best Wishes in your debut.

Hardbody Style’n with Cindy – Three Things Bring to a Major Photo Shoot

Our resident Style’n guru, Cindy Whitehead aka The Sports Stylist® has some good insight on what to bring to a major photo shoot.

Going on a major photo shoot for the first time? We stylists don’t expect you to bring anything but yourself,  but its always nice if you have the following (just in case).
• A “skin color” smooth style bra (which ever color is closest to your skin color is the one you want). Make sure it adjusts from a regular back to a racer back.
• No show athletic socks.
• A nude thong. OnGossamer makes great ones that lay flat and don’t show through the clothes.

Check out Cindy’s blog at cindywhitehead.blogspot.com and follow her on twitter @SportsStylist.

Jessica Paxson-Putnam Re-signs with Optimum Nutrition

IFBB Figure Bikini Pro Jessica Paxson-Putnam re-signed with top supplement company, Optimum Nutrition. Jessica signed with Optimum after turning pro in 2005. It’s rare that you see a company sponsor a woman and stick with them for five plus years. It speaks to Jessica’s character and Optimum’s commitment.

Jessica shared, “I am so excited to have re-signed with ABB/ON! It is an honor and privilege to work with such a highly respected and successful supplement company. Their products are second to none! We are like a family and they respect me as a person and an athlete.”

Congrats. Fans can see Jessica at the Optimum Nutrition booth at this year’s Olympia Expo. Jess will be competing in the first ever Bikini Olympia and one of the top contenders.

Nicole Wilkins-Lee Signs with MET-Rx

FLEXonline.com reports that the current Ms. Figure Olympia Champ, Nicole Wilkins-Lee has signed an endorsement contract with Met-Rx. Congratulations to all parties involved.

“I’m thrilled to have been given such a wonderful opportunity to be a part of such a great company,” Wilkins-Lee said. “I’ve been using Met-Rx products since I started weight training as a freshman in high school. I love seeing their commercials on channels like ESPN and it’s so cool that I’m now on that team. Who knows, maybe someday that will be me!”

2010 Tournament of Champions Pro Bikini Preview & HARDBODY Poll

This Saturday, 18 IFBB Bikini Pros will take the stage at the IFBB Tournament of Champions held in Culver City, California. The show is the second-to-last competition for those hoping to lock in a spot in the first Bikini Olympia. There are a number of women making their pro debuts and a few familiar names. We’ll be there covering the action and tweeting the coverage with the hashtag #IFBBTOC.

My Top Contenders:
Dina Al-Sabah has steadily improved with every show and has found her way around the new division. She teamed up with TEAM BOMBSHELL a few weeks ago and the results have paid off. Look for her to be one of the names called out in the top five.

Jennifer Celeste will be making her pro debut. She turned pro at the 2009 NPC JR Nationals and has good bikini physique. Since we haven’t seen her on stage in over a year it’s a roll of the dice on what her current physique looks like in a bikini. Jennifer is currently living in Los Angeles and has the added advantage of not having to travel.

Sonia Gonzales has two pro bikini shows to her credit but they were the first two pro shows of the year. She was the runner-up at the Pittsburgh Pro to Nathalia Melo however Melo lost to Latona, who Sonia beat at The Muscle Contest. Confused? Don’t be. Sonia has streamlined her physique with the help of trainer Kim Oddo and will be presenting a much different look than the one we saw at the beginning of the year. The key to Sonia’s success is her stage presence. If she can “own it” and present with confidence she’ll be the one to beat.

Anca Marcus will be making her pro debut. Anca, originally from Romania, successfully petitioned the IFBB Pro League and was granted pro status. She won the overall bikini title at the NPC Orange County Muscle Classic and was the runner-up to Amanda Latona at the 2009 California State Bikini Championships. We haven’t seen her against this type of competition however she has a solid track record and physique to make a case for a top five spot here.

Brooke Mora turned pro in July at the 2010 NPC USAs. Many felt she was good enough to win the overall title there, myself included. Brooke is one of the taller competitors in the line-up and has good stage presence. If she brings a similar presentation and look to this show she could be a top contender. I like her look and would be surprised if she’s not in one of the first call-outs.

The Wild Cards:
Christina Vargas will be making her Pro bikini debut after a few tries at Figure. I think this division will suit Christina better and she could be in the mix if she brings her sass to the stage. I could see her in the mix for a top five spot here.

Jennifer Dietrick was in the mix at the 2010 Europa Super show and could be here. She’ll need to improve her stage presence and have a different suit to move up. Her suit was too small from the back and will likely be one not allowed on stage after this year’s Olympia. Jennifer has a good physique she just need to show some personality and present it with confidence.

Natalie Pennington is already qualified for the Olympia but will face some stiffer competition here. She has a nice look but needs a little more booty to hang in the top spots. We haven’t seen her on stage in a few months so perhaps she’ll bring a bit more junk in the trunk to this show.

Karen Mullarkey is competing in bikini after a few runs in the Figure division. She has the sass on stage but will her physique be in line with what the judges are looking for? We’ll have to see.

There are of course a number of other women who could be in the mix here and it all depends on who shows up with the best presentation and physique on Saturday. Get more information on the show at www.musclecontest.com and we’ll see ya in Culver City on Saturday!

Meet New WWE NXT Rookie Diva – Kaitlyn

I don’t watch professional wrestling but I did tonight. I have to admit it was fairly amusing albeit a bit corny at times. I tuned in to watch Figure International champ Zivile Raudoniene make her WWE debut but received a text that someone else I knew would be on the show. Someone new who would overshadow the Figure International’s debut.

Who?

One of the coolest NPC competitors I’ve met and shot with, Celeste Bonin that’s who. Celeste has competed a handful of NPC Figure competitions and despite not placing in the top spot at her last National shows she managed to stand out. She first caught my eye at the 2008 NPC JR USA contest and then again at last year’s NPC JR Nationals. It was there I had I had the chance to shoot with her and laugh my ass off. Anyone who knows her, knows she is not only an attractive little lass but also one of the funniest people you’ll ever meet.

Tonight on WWE NXT Season 3 she was introduced as the surprise new rookie diva, Kaitlyn. She hammed it up and performed like a seasoned pro but let’s rewind a bit. How did this competitor make it to the WWE?

I last saw Celeste in July and she’d just moved to Tampa to work with the WWE’s development center. She had only been at the center for a few days but thought it would be something she’d enjoy. At the time she was learning the ropes and had no idea how long she’d have to train before she’d get on tv, if ever. Most men and women have to practice for months and do small road appearances to gain experience before making it to the main events. Celeste showed what kind of rock star status she has by making it on TV after only two months at the center.  That’s unheard of in the world of wrestling.

Those of you who think wrestling is all fake she assured me that it’s harder than you may think. I admit, I’m “one of those people” who think is it all fabricated. She responded with, “You better check yourself bro, because it’s not for pansies. It takes athleticism, charisma, and a high threshold for pain. Not to mention, it takes a lot of guts to wear some of those outfits.” She was serious and then I asked her if she’d busted any skulls yet. Back to her joker-self she shared, “I did break a chair but it was just because I sat on it with an over loaded to-go container from the all-you-can-eat sushi place down the street.”

She went on to tell me that she believed competing in the NPC helped her make it as far as she has. Celeste shared, “Competing has taught me discipline and given me self-confidence. Although for me, I felt like the judges always saw a two dimensional version of me. Wrestling has given me the chance to showcase my personality as well as my body. I’m also a one-man band and I’m available for birthdays parties.”

Tonight on the show she shared that same humor a number of times. My favorite was the robot/Elaine “Seinfeld” dance she did. Classic! Check out the play-by-play of the show on pwinsider.com.

Thanks to Kaitlyn, I may be a regular viewer of this season’s show. Check out Kaitlyn’s full bio and WWE photos here. Pick up the newest MUSCLE & FITNESS HERS to read more about her in my “Twist & Turns” column.

** UPDATE **
Tune in Friday to WWE SMACKDOWN and you’ll likely see more of Kaitlyn.

Hardbody Poll: Who is the Fastest Female in the IFBB?

I recently noticed a common theme with a number of women in the IFBB… Many do sprint workouts. A number of IFBB Pros also ran track at some level before they were pros. It got my wheels turning…What if we conducted a race of 100 meters… Who would win it? There are a number of women who can haul ass but which would be the fastest? It could be an interesting showdown.

Feel free to add yourself or someone else to the poll below that I may have missed. This could be a fun poll to actually put to the test in real life.

Erin Stern’s Road to The Figure Olympia – Hair on A Stick

IFBB Figure Pro Erin Stern checked in over the Labor Day Weekend and shares a sample of what her day looks like. She’s out to avoid looking like hair on a stick. SAY WHAT? Check it out. Erin shares a valuable reminder… do what works for you!

Hair on a stick.

Ok… glittery, tanned hair on a stick. When I looked over pictures from last year’s Olympia, that’s how I looked. It wasn’t the fact that I had done a few shows leading up the O, it was that I had turned myself into the human equivalent of a gerbil in an exercise wheel – cardio, cardio, cardio! It’s about 2.5 weeks until show time and I keep pictures out from last year’s Olympia to remind of how I don’t want to look. I threw away my “skinny jeans” because they are tight on my quads…and we girls equate tight clothes with being overweight…so, buh bye!

Last year I walked on the treadmill 4-6 days per week, for up to an hour. This year I walk outside a lot and sprint at the track twice a week. I also cut out power-lifting last year and I incorporated more circuits. I had watched training videos and thought that since circuits worked for some competitors, that I should be doing them too. (Hmmm…same with cardio)! Now, I’m training heavy and powe-rlifting 1-2 times per week. I’ve found that my strength is remaining fairly constant, though I’m getting leaner! I haven’t cut carbs yet, though I am eating very clean. I know that by running a caloric deficit, I can keep lifting heavy…I won’t be able to add mass.

A sample schedule on any given day:
6:30 am – up for cardio
8:00 am – ½ cup old-fashioned oats with 5 egg whites
11:00 am – 4 oz of bison, ½ cup of quinoa and as much leafy spinach as I feel like stuffing in my face
2:00 pm – Tuna with fat-free mayo, calabaza squash and misc sliced veggies (tomato, celery, mushrooms)
5:00 pm – Greek yogurt w/a ½ scoop of protein powder and 3 rice cakes
6:00 pm – Weight Train
7:30 pm – A Protein shake and a few slices of watermelon
8:00 pm – 5 egg whites with as much broccoli as I can fit into the skillet
10:00 pm-ish – Bed

If I get hungry between meals or before cardio, I’ll take a ½ scoop of protein powder. I also carry my water jug around, staying hydrated helps! This year I’m weighing my proteins and carbs. I was underestimating proteins last year. Veggies, for the most part, are free. There’s a limit to how much spinach one can stuff down…hopefully.

Well, here’s to another week of training hard!!

Meet Your New Running Partner

Nike has launched a super cool new app available in the iTunes store. The Nike+ GPS App helps you get more out of every run with a variety of features. You can track your indoor and outdoor workouts without a sensor. It allows you to record your pace, distance and even a running route. The app shares messages from some of Nike’s top athletes and you can set a PowerSong to help keep you motivated. The new app is designed for the iPhone but it’s also compatible with the iPod touch.

The App allows you to set goals, brag to friends or set up challenges on Nikeplus.com and Facebook. I think I’ll give it a try since it’s only $1.99. Share your thoughts in the comments below if you’re a Nike+ user.

2010 Hardbody Fitness Olympia Poll

We’re just days away from the 15th Annual Fitness Olympia. This year has a number of story lines leading into it.

Mia Finnegan was the very first Fitness Olympia champ in 1995 and she’ll return this year. Adela Garcia will attempt to make history by winning a record 5th title. She’s currently tied with Susie Curry with 4 titles to her credit. Tracy Greenwood, Julie Palmer and Jen Hendershott are all sitting out this year. Tracey announced her retirement earlier this year and Julie Palmer is expecting her first child. Jen Hendershott has been busy with her off stage business.

This leaves the top six wide open. We’ll likely see Adela and Tanji Johnson battling it out for the crown but that’s not a given. Trish Warren has been coming on strong in her latest shows and could be a contender. Oksana Grishina has one of the best routines and continues to improve her physique. Shannon Meteraud is no stranger to big shows and a strong candidate for the top five. Camala Rodriquez will be competing in her first Olympia and many people thinks she’s a top three threat. She certainly has the potential.

Create a Vision Board

I ran across this blog on Lululemon’s web site. Do any of you have one of these? If so let us know in the comments field.

vision board

Example of a Vision Board

How to create a vision board:
1. Find pictures of things, people, places and activities you want in your life. I like to sit down with a stack of magazines (Yoga Journal, O Magazine and Women’s Health always make the cut), some scissors and an afternoon off.

2. Tear out any pictures that resonate with you – some of my favourites include pictures of healthy food, challenging yoga poses, beaches, smiles and books. Once you’ve created a really big, inspiring mess, it’s time for scissors and tape!

3. Grab a bristol board and start arranging all of your photos into a collage.

The end result should be a mish-mash of all of the amazing things you see for yourself in the near or distant future.

As a finishing touch, I like to tie my vision board back to the goals I’ve set for myself, so I toss some of them on there for good measure. All you need for this last step is a sheet of white paper and something to write with. Just jot down some of your goals, cut them out and add them to the collage! At this point, you not only have an exciting visual representation of your future life, you also have a pretty amazing piece of art to hang on your wall.

And let’s be serious, who doesn’t love a good arts and crafts session?

Dina Al Sabah Signs with FMG

Fitness Management Group (FMG) has signed IFBB Pro Dina Al Sabah to their roster. Dina recently returned to the IFBB stage after a four year hiatus. When she returned she decided to compete in the new bikini division and has steadily improved with each show. Dina was one of the original IFBB Pro Figure competitors and before that she competed in fitness AND bodybuilding. That makes her the first and (so far) only woman to compete in every division.

Dina shared, “I am thrilled to be a part of FMG. This was something that J.M. and I discussed in ’03 when I was in the IFBB Figure division, but due to various reasons did not happen. As you know, both J.M. and you, Isaac, were instrumental in getting me to come back and compete in the new IFBB Bikini division. I think the timing is perfect as I feel I can be quite competitive and be of the same caliber as the other FMG athletes.

Dina will be competing at the 2010 Tournament of Champions, next weekend in Culver City.

Stay updated with FMG on Facebook and visit Dina’s site at FitDina.com.
