Baby On Board – Figure Champion Gina Aliotti Shares The News

Gina Aliotti hasn’t competed since the 2009 Figure Olympia. She was the runner-up at the Olympia three times but took top honors at the 2008 Figure International. Many felt she was positioned to be the next Figure Olympia champion before she stepped away from the stage. She’s one of the few who have left the competitive stage on top of their game to pursue other interests. Gina passed on the 2010 Figure International and instead exchanged wedding vows with Michael Silva. Fast-forward to today and Gina shares with us this exclusive interview on her latest news. Gina and Michael are expecting their first child in January. Check out what the champ had to say about the big news and what’s ahead.

First, Congrats! How far along are you?
Thank you. Just over 12 weeks… We are due on January 17th.

Was this a “planned” addition?
Yes, my husband and I have been talking about it for a while and thought the timing was perfect! I wanted to spend a little bit of time, after competing to live and enjoy our first years of marriage and now we are excited and ready.

Do you know what the sex of your baby or want it to be a mystery?
We definitely want to know and will find out late in August at 20 weeks.

Do you have your names picked out?
We are tossing around a few names but not sharing any yet…

So it’s like a fitness routine – top secret until the big day?
Exactly!

So no plans of returning to the stage or will we see you after the baby is born?
Never say never but as of now stepping on stage is the last thing on my mind and enjoying my baby and all the joy he/she will bring is #1. As of now, I honestly can’t see how I would juggle a new born, contest prep, running my business and being a wife but hey, I know there are tons of super moms that do so I will never say never! My hat goes off to all those mothers because as of now, not sure how I would balance all of that! No matter what, my biggest priority is to ensure that I don’t put too much on my plate and I maintain balance in all areas of my life. I just want to live in the moment and see where motherhood takes me. If it is to the stage, that is where I will go but not making any plans now, just enjoying my journey!

Do you still follow the industry despite not being active on stage?
Absolutely! I have girls that compete and I love living vicariously though them! I am still very active at the Jon Lindsay’s NPC shows and love seeing the girls display their hard work and dedication. Being on stage is only a small part of the industry. What I love now is seeing it from a different point of view and being able to be hands on with my clients who have the dreams and goals that I once had! It has been really fun to be on the other side of the fence!

Tell the ladies what you’ll be doing to journal/document your pregnancy and where they can find more about it.
I will continue to post on my Facebook page (www.facebook.com/GinaAliotti) and blogging my “Beautiful, Healthy, & Fit Pregnancy” on The Gina Aliotti Fitness Network. I will be sharing my daily log with workouts, nutrition, how I am feeling, possible cravings, and just how my pregnancy journey is unfolding! I am excited to share my journey with you! I would love people to get involved, share their stories and be an active part of my pregnancy!

Besides the baby – what else have you been up to?
I have been really busy with my personal training and nutrition consulting business. Both in person and online I spend my days helping men and women, of all walks of life, bettering their health and fitness. My clients keep me really busy and I love every moment of it. I have also been busy creating my NEW Lifestyle Balance Diet Plan. I am excited to have completed this new project and have been really happy with the results people are getting! It is a downloadable Diet and Training plan that offers 85 pages of my tools and tips to get in the best shape and maintain your results for life. People are calling it their “Fitness Bible”, which is pretty cool because I created it to be used as a solid foundation for longterm results. On a personal note, Michael and I have done some traveling and spent lots of quality time with friends and family! I have really enjoyed some downtime, after 7 years of competing. 🙂

What’s been the biggest challenge since leaving the stage?
I would say, finding that balance again. Competing took so much of my life for so long and after stopping, it took me some time to get back to reality, finding that balance of normal life, training, etc. Ever since I was 19, I ate, breathed, and drank competitions. After deciding to take a break and move on with the next chapter of my life, it took me some time to reestablish goals, off the stage, discover what was going to work for me, how I wanted to train, etc. It has been quite a journey and taken me some time to get back to Gina Aliotti off the stage but with time, I reestablished myself, my goals, my dreams and what initially led me to competition and that is my absolute love for everyday health and fitness. Competition takes you to a completely different level of fitness, physically and mentally. I believe it takes time to regain your idea of reality and what is “normal”. I would say taking on the competition journey is a big challenge but then easing off the competition train is yet another big challenge in itself.

I am really excited to share my exciting news and Beautiful, Healthy and Fit Pregnancy with everyone!

Congrats Gina and all the best to you, Michael and the little one on the way!

Chicago Pro Photos, Results & Review

IFBB Figure Pro Candice Lewis has found a winning look and has positioned herself as one of the rising stars in the division. Coming off her first pro victory, Lewis repeated her efforts over the weekend at the Chicago Pro show. Undeniably some of the best genetics and structure in the figure ranks helped her lock in the win. Nola Trimble took top honors in her IFBB Pro debut in the Women’s Physique division and Monique Jones punched her ticket to the Olympia with a win in female bodybuilding.

The Figure competition showcased a variety of shapes and sizes for the judges to choose from. Candice Lewis won in unamious fashion and if she brings a similar look to the Olympia stage in 12 weeks don’t be surprised if she is in the hunt for the top 6. The only thing she has to watch is her quads and them not overpowering her upper body. When most women are trying to build their legs, Candice is trying to downsize them and the muscle comes from years of running track. Natalie Waples finished in her highest placing as a pro with the runner-up spot. Natalie’s placings have been sporadic since turning pro at the 2008 North American Championships but has steadily improved. Alea Suarez showed she’s a threat to the top spots coming in third. This sets up an interesting scenario as the Olympia nears. Waples and Suarez are now tied for second in the Olympia Point Series behind Allison Frahn. The two leaped over Cheryl Brown who has yet to qualify for the Olympia and finished in a disappointing 7th at this show.

Nola Trimble beat out a competitive fiel in her IFBB Pro Women’s Physique debut. Mikaila Soto finished in her highest placing as a pro by taking second place. Rounding out the top three was Monica (Mark) Escalante. Monica made the switch from Figure after being told she was too muscular and often too hard for Figure. Look for her to be a top threat in every Women’s Physique competition she enters.

Monica Jones won her first pro show since achieving IFBB pro status at the 2010 North American Championships. Monique continues to refine her physique and possesses tremendous potential in the division. Helle Neilson rebounded from a 9th place finish at the Europa Hartford show. Michelle Cummings rounded out the top three in just her second pro show. Michelle was second in her IFBB pro debut at the Europa Hartford.

NPC Team Universe & Fitness Nationals Preview

This weekend nearly 500 competitors will take the stage at the 2012 Team Universe / Fitness Nationals in Teaneck, NJ. The events will also showcase a number of Masters Divisions and look for close to 100 competitors cross over from the Open to Masters events.

A total of 55 IFBB Pro cards will be awarded on Saturday night. The bulk of those pro cards coming in the women’s events. NPCNEWSonline.com broke down the pro cards by division.

– Open Men’s Bodybuilding Overall winner – 1
– Open Women’s Bodybuilding Overall winner – 1
– Master’s Men’s Bodybuilding Over 35, Over 45 and Over 55 Overall winners – 3
– Master’s Women’s Bodybuilding Over 35 and Over 45 Overall winners – 2
– Open Figure Top 2 in each Height Class (6 Height Classes) – 12
– Masters Figure Over 35 and Over 45 Overall winners – 2
– Open Bikini Top 2 in each Height Class (6 Height Classes) – 12
– Masters Bikini Over 35 Overall Winner – 1
– Men’s Physique Top 2 in each Height Class (3 Height Classes) – 6
– Women’s Physique Top 3 in each Height Class (3 Height Classes) – 9
– Women’s Fitness Top 2 in each Height Class (3 Height Classes) – 6

The overall winners will be eligible to compete on the USA TEAM at the 2012 World Championships. While we don’t have the final competitor lists as of yet, here’s a few competitors to watch.  These are just a few names that could be contenders, there’s clearly more to add to the list, in all divisions.

BIKINI:
Danielle Carr was 6th at this show last year and will look to move up into the top five this time around. Nola June has been up and down in the placings and if she comes in on point she can be a contender here. Kate Fishler was on top of her game at the NPC JR Nationals but slipped a bit at the Jr. Nationals. She has stunning good looks and wouldn’t bet against her finishing in the top two of her class. One who will definitely be a fan favorite is Denise Milani. Denise has built a huge online following and if she brings a better cut suit to this stage than her last NPC outing she could be a contender here. Maureen Doherty from Temecula, CA is one to watch in the open and in the 35 and over class. Paola Terry will make the trip to from Anchorage, Alaska and could be a leading lady in this show. She took top honors at the 2012 Emerald Cup earlier this year. Adrienne Crenshaw has been oh so close this year placing second at both the NPC Jr USA and NPC Jr Nationals this year. She’ll look to take a pro card home to Texas on Saturday night. Another Texan to keep an eye on is Siliana Gaspard. She took top honors at the 2011 NPC Texas and was third at the 2011 North Americans. If she brings the look she has to past shows, she’ll leave with a pro card.

FIGURE:
The Figure competition will be stacked in every class. Krista Dunn returns to the stage looking to crack the top spots. The Colorado girl has been consistently at the top in each of her National shows. Michelle Beck will make a return to the stage and if she comes in tight without being too hard, she could be a top contender in the tall class. Victoria Adelus was fifth in her class at last year’s Team U. She’ll hope to move into the top two spots this weekend. She was second at this year’s Emerald Cup held in April. Corinna Booth as the queen of the 2011 Ft. Lauderdale Cup and took second at this year’s New York Mets. Look for her to be a contender in her class. Patty Zariello has been knocking on a pro card’s door several times but came up just short. Look for her to do well and potentially leave with IFBB Pro status on Saturday night. Amy Puglise knows all to what what it’s like to be close to a pro card. She was second at the 2011 NPC Nationals and runner up at the 2012 NPC Jr Nationals. Another figure competitor who knows what it’s like to be in the top five but just miss out on turning pro is Michelle DeRosa. Michelle was third at the 2011 NPC Nationals and 4th at this year’s NPC JR USA. Kelly Booth Hater was second at the 2012 NPC JR Nationals B Class. She’ll look to match or surpass that here and leave a pro.

BODYBUILDING:
If things continue to go the way they have, look for the women’s bodybuilding numbers to be the lowest of all the divisions this weekend. Look for three women to be battling for the top spots and they could all face off in the Master’s division. Gail Auerbach, Michelle Brent and Christine Sabo. All three women have been at the top of t heir game before and if they bring their best here they could leave with IFBB Pro status. Sabo has the most potential of the group and if she’s on point she could leave your overall champ.

FITNESS:
The Fitness division should see decent numbers given that it’s the NPC Fitness Nationals and the top two in each of the three height classes achieve IFBB Pro status.  I look for around 30 competitors to enter this weekend’s event. A couple familiar names to the Fitness stage are Babette Mulford and Lisha Dean. Both women have come close to turning pro a number of times. I can’t see Babette leaving Jersey still an amateur if she brings the same thing she did to Jr Nationals. Lisha starts strong and tends to get a little winded mid-way through her routine. If she can keep her energy high through out the routine and come in just a bit tighter, she could leave with pro status. Alexis Paige showed potential in her Fitness debut in Chicago. If she speeds up her routine a bit and has some more strength moves she could do well. Ashley Sebera is knocking on the door to pro status as well. The Ohio girl has been moving up in the ranks this year and finished third at the NPC JR Nationals. Look for her to be a contender here. There will be a number of others that could leave with pro status and ultimately the best combo of a routine and physique should prevail.

WOMEN’S PHYSIQUE:
There are three pro cards up for grabs in each of the three height classes and this division has been blowing up as the year progresses. Nine women will leave with IFBB Pro status so you can bet this division will be packed once again. You have to figure Rachel Baker is one of the odds on favorites to leave a pro and potentially win the whole show. She’s come close on a number of occasions and definitely has the look of the division. Tony Perdikakis will look to come in a bit tighter in the legs than she was at the Greater Gulf States and try her hand at a division. Andrea Holliday will also be making the switch from Figure to Physique. If she can come in full she might have a chance to do well.

Jeneba Tarmoh Concedes Olympic 100m Spot

Jena Tarmoh tied training partner Allyson Felix in the Women’s 100 meters. The photo finished showed both women crossing the line at the exact same time, 11.068 seconds. Surprisingly, The U.S. Olympic Committee has no protocol in place to determine how such an occurrence will be handled. On Tuesday, Scott Blackmun, U.S. Olympic Committee CEO said, “We all got blindsided a little bit.” This after Tarmoh declined to runoff despite initially agreeing to do so.

Initially Tarmoh celebrated on the the track when she was initially shown as the third place finisher in the 100 meter. She was later informed that she had in fact tied for the third place spot. The Olympic Committee left the decision to the athletes, they women could have a coin toss or a runoff. The coin toss seems a bit juvenile for such a prestigious spot, at least in my opinion. These athletes train years in hopes of securing a spot on the Olympic team.

When it was announced on Sunday that a runoff would take place people were excited. This had all the makings of “must see” tv. How often do women’s sports capture world wide attention and become the lead sports story? Not very often at all. There were multiple story lines heading into the event. Two training partners facing off with only one Olympic spot available. Tarmoh feeling slighted and Felix rejuvenated after smoking the field in the 200 meters.

Nike Running shared this image via facebook when news broke that the two women would be racing for the final spot. Thousands of fans “liked” it and were excited for the event.

Jeneba decided the runoff was not for her and conceded her spot to Allyson. Allyson tweeted, “We dedicate our lives for a shot at our dreams. Very disappointed I didn’t get to earn my 100m spot. I love & respect my friend regardless.” Obviously this was an emotional time for both athletes. Is it a decision Tarmoh will look back on years from now and wish she had competed in the race-off? I’d think so but that’s for her to decide. When an opportunity only comes along once every four years you have to take advantage and seize the day. If not it will be a long four years before that chance comes along again and who knows how your body will hold up along the way. Some athletes get better, stronger, faster and others well not so much.

Tarmoh will still compete in the Olympics on the USA 400 meter relay.

Video: Posing For Figure

Gabby Douglas Wins Olympic Gymnastic Trials

This is one of the most exciting times of the years. It’s a shame it only happens every four years however we’ll enjoy it while it’s here. One of our favorite events in the Summer Olympics is gymnastics. The women put in countless hours every day to just to reach the Olympic trials. One slip and a dreams are lost. There are no do-overs in the trials and you’ll have to wait four more years before you can seek redemption.

Gabriell “Gabby” Douglas, just 16 years old, punched her ticket to London by winning the Olympic Trials. Gabby hasn’t always been on top but you’d never know it by the smile she sports while performing in front of thousands. She grew up in Virginia Beach an moved to Des Moines, Iowa in 2010 to train with Liang Chow. Coach Chow has coached 2008 Olympic Silver Medalist Shawn Johnson.

During the live coverage of the Olympic Trial, NBC drew attention to her parents in the stands. The two weren’t together and made note that Gabby hadn’t seen her father in person in quite some time. This was due to her father, Timothy, being deployed in Afghanistan with the Air National Guard. Tim was able to watch his daughter fly high, most notable in the uneven bars.

Read more about the trials and Gabby’s win on CBSnews.com. You can follow her on twitter at @gabrielledoug and give her facebook page a “like” to show your support.

Congratulations Gabby and all the best in London!

The USA Gymnastics Fitness Program encourages kids ages 6-16 to engage in physical fitness through training, exercise and nutrition awareness.

Grant Will Benefit up to One Million Kids as Part of Company’s Youth Sports Initiative for London 2012 Olympic Games

This is the first of several grants that will be awarded to National Governing Bodies (NGBs) to help encourage youth to engage in sports.

IFBB Chicago Pro Show Preview

It’s been nearly 20 years since the IFBB Pro League has held a show in the Windy City.  As of today, 73 men and women will take the stage in Chicago looking to do what Dorian Yates did in 1996… win! The women’s events will consist of Bodybuilding, Physique and Figure. There will also be a National Qualifying NPC event held in conjunction with the Pro show. The IFBB Pros will take the stage at noon on Saturday, July 7, 2012 and the finals will be held at 5pm the same day. This is a rare schedule for the pros but one that the overwhelming majority will favor. It means the women won’t have to pay for hair and make up twice as well as potentially another round of tanning.

THE HARDBODY 411:

Women’s Bodybuilding:
We’ll see 18 women in the pro bodybuilding division and one will leave with an Olympia qualification. There are only 7 women in the 2012 Olympia to date. This certainly makes things more exciting for the competitors and fans knowing that more is on the line than at other shows. This show also has more prize money up for grabs than other shows. The top five women will leave with some coin and a total purse of $9,500 is on the line for these women. There is no clear favorite heading into this show so your guess is as good as ours when it comes to who will leave with the Olympia qualification. Wendy McCready and Monique Jones are both tied for 4th in the new Olympia Point Series with 3 points. If either of them finishes high at this show they could punch their ticket to Vegas via the new qualification system.

Women’s Physique:
This women’s physique line up should provide a solid group for the judges to compare. Tamee Marie is coming off a win at the Greater Gulf States however this time around she’ll have some stiffer competition. Jennifer Robinson continues to make her presence known and if she can come in a bit sharper with better posing, she should be in the mix for the win. Trina Thompson and Nola Trimble will be making their IFBB Pro debuts. Trina achieve pro status at the Jr.USas and Nola went pro at the 2011 North American Championships. Both women could land in the top five their first time out. The dark horse in this lineup and one who will likely shake things up in the division if she nails her posing is Monica (formerly Mark) Escalante. She’s been marked down for being too muscular in Figure and will make the switch to Physique where she should fair better. Kim Tilden could be the one to beat in this lineup, at least based on the look the judges have favored and what she’s presented on stage. Paul Williams-Gulman will try her hand at the division after a debuting in Fitness. Paula finished at the bottom of the pack at the 2012 Flex Pro and will see if Women’s Physique is a better fit.

Pro Figure:
This will be one of the biggest Figure competitions to date and only two of the 22 are qualified for the Olympia. Chelsey Morgenstern is one who quietly finds her way along each year and has been up and down in her placings. She was 16th at the 2011 Phoenix Pro, 12th at the Olympia and then finished in second at last year’s Kentucky Muscle Pro, qualifying her for the Olympia. This was one of the last shows where you didn’t have to win to qualify. On the flip side, Candice Lewis is coming off a win at the 2012 Omaha Pro. She show cased incredible structure and a nice balance in her upper and lower body. Her shape is one of the best in the pro ranks, if she comes in on point and maybe just a tad sharper than Omaha, she’s the one to beat. Cheryl Brown will look for the win but is she doesn’t she could still rack up points in the new Olympia Points system. She’s currently not qualified for the Olympia but sits in second, just one point behind Allison Frahn. Nipping at her heels in the point standings are Aleisha Hart, Kimberly Sheppard and Alea Suarez. Each of the ladies are tied for third an this show could put one of them ahead in the standings. If Alea Suarez brings the the look she presented at the Omaha Pro, night show she will be a contender for the win. Natalie Waples could be an X-factor as she’s either in the hunt or at the bottom of the pack. Chikondi Mseka has one of the better structures in this line up but has yet to get some love in the pro ranks.

A little fun fact; Tiffany Archer, Candice Lewis, Vicki Counts and Gloria Tarpley all turned pro on the Chicago stage last year. The women faced off for the overall at the 2011 NPC Jr. Nationals and Candice prevailed as the overall winner..
