Ladies Want This Body? The Situation Cover

I’m not sure what to make of the newest Men’s Fitness cover. The issue features MTV’s Jersey Shore’s Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino on the cover. One call out says, “How to drink, party and get abs like these!” Now that’s funny considering he has a pretty lame set of abs to begin with. Another call out on the cover says “Don’t Hate! Your girl wants his body, too!” HAHAHA! Comedy at it’s finest.

On one hand you could say well the guy might encourage people to work out after seeing him on the cover but does partying and drinking really lead to great abs? Not so much. I give the guy props for making the most of his reality show shtick but to grace the cover of a fitness magazine… That’s a bit much. I’m not hating, I’m laughing.

IFBB Women’s Bodybuilding Rep: “Moving in the Right Direction with a Positive Message”

IFBB Women’s Bodybuilding Represenatative, Betty Pariso issued a statement today, regarding the Women’s Physique Division. The details of the new division are still be ironed out but the interwebs have been all a buzz about the new division. It’s said to be for women who aren’t muscular enough to be competitive in bodybuilding but too muscular for figure. The division is still be explored and official word from the NPC/IFBB has yet to be released.

Betty recently retired from competitive bodybuilding but she is very active in promoting shows with her husband Ed. Betty shared, “First let me say that Ed & I have added a 2nd Pro Women’s Contest to our Event Schedule in 2011. We will be bringing FIBO / Europa to the USA and we have included Pro Women Bodybuilding to the line-up of events. It will be held in Chicago – September 30, 2 weeks after the 2011 Olympia.”

Betty had this to share today…

MOVING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION WITH A POSITIVE MESSAGE

TIME LINE:

April 2007
In 2007 I had created a overall program called Women’s Physique Division , and presented it to the IFBB Committee, and at that time it was rejected. I felt at the time, and still do that there is a big niche that we are missing…women that want to train and build some muscle.  Currently, we are missing a huge market, somewhere between the current level of Women’s Bodybuilding and Figure. Women that want muscle, just not to the excess…that is what I keep hearing from so many Women that they want. The progression of Women’s Bodybuilding over the years may have discouraged many from competition in our sport.

April 2010
I made the decision one month after the Arnold to retire from Women’s Bodybuilding. I was not tired of Women’s Bodybuilding, Competing or Training, but had decided I would not do what it takes to compete at that level of muscularity. Ed knew competing for me was so much of who I am…so we looked around and the only thing left out there for me was Figure. Although Figure is smaller than I wanted to be, I was excited with this new challenge, and it became a fun new goal for me that kept me motivated to change my body. I dropped 30 pounds in 3 months and of course loved the clothes I could fit into !

August 2010
Bob (Bob Chicherillo, the IFBB Pro Athlete’s Rep) contacts me and ask me to join and support a somewhat similar proposal that he too named “Women’s Physique Division”. I was happy to be involved and will lend my support and hopefully be able to give some ideas and direction. At this time the exact criteria is not known. You have heard directly from Steve Weinberger that Women’s Bodybuilding is not going anywhere.

MY THOUGHTS:
As a woman…I do feel in my heart it is the right direction and message regardless. I am always about being inclusive. I know some of you will not fit into this new category, but as it currently stands, many do not fit in either Figure or Pro Women’s Bodybuilding. So we have left out a huge group of women that will now have somewhere to go.

As I get older, and hopefully wiser I have always been concerned about the message we are sending to the young women coming up in the sport of female bodybuilding. The image that is winning at the highest level is a body image that is causing many women to make very difficult choices or drop out of the sport of Bodybuilding. For a lot of Women, some muscle on a woman is very beautiful…no question, but we are way over on the muscularity end of what many female bodybuilders originally liked about the sport and wanted for themselves.  If this new division proves to be successful in the NPC, then these women will now have the Women’s Physique Division in which to compete.

Women’s Bodybuilding has evolved to the highest level of muscularity, and it has created a huge void between Figure and Women’s Bodybuilding. Hopefully I will have some input in
developing the criteria and this new division lands somewhere in the middle.

Sincerely,
Betty Pariso

Kick’n It with Khadr – Hardbody Insight with Ariel Khadr

Welcome IFBB Fitness Pro Ariel Khadr to our growing list of Hardbody contributors. Ariel achieved IFBB Pro status last year at the NPC Fitness Nationals and in the process became the IFBB Pro League’s youngest member. At age 17, she has time on her side and without question one of the most talented women to join the pro ranks. She’s an accomplished gymnast and holds a second-degree black belt in TaeKwonDo. Our goal is to provide a unique voice from one of the fitness industry’s brightest stars. Check out the first installment of “Kick’n it with Khadr”.

arielkhadr
Lately, I’ve been watching TV shows about weight issues in this country. I find that people have a huge misconception about how simple it is to lose weight the right way and to not feel hungry or deprived. Just by changing what you eat, you can still eat just as much or even more and still lose weight! For example… if you normally have a t-bone steak dinner with mashed potatoes and sauteed veggies, you might want to have sirloin steak, with a baked potato or baked sweet potato (use spray butter and butter buds) and lots of steamed veggies instead. Learn to utilize spices when cooking and try low calorie snacks like sugar-free jello, sugar-free ice pops, and miracle noodles!

Learn more about Ariel in her bodybuilding.com interview. Be sure to follow Ariel on twitter (twitter.com/arielkhadr) and give her a Hardbody shout or in this case tweet. While you do that I’m going to check out these miracle noodles she’s talking about, they sound pretty good!

Hardbody Ladies in the Newest FLEX Magazine

The March 2010 issue of FLEX magazine arrived in my mailbox and it is chalked full of great content. There’s a lot of love being shown to the women in this issue and it’s cool to see so many pages featuring some Hardbody ladies. Here’s a quick run down of some of what you’ll find in the newest issue related to the women.

Also, M&F Hers will run a few anonymous quotes/comments from our Hardbody.com audience. So if you want to expand, send me an email to hardbodynews@gmail.com. Remember, all responses will be anonymous.

Hardbody Hottie of the Day: Celeste Bonin

Pick up the newest issue of FLEX magazine and you’ll see NPC competitor Celeste Bonin featured in the W’s section. Celeste is a brunette beauty that callas Texas home. I had a chance to shoot with her earlier this year and she was a natural in front of the camera. While this isn’t the photo that ran in the magazine it is from the same shoot.

Celeste Bonin has a great look to match her personality.

If you have the chance to meet Celeste definitely do so, she is hilarious. Keep your eye on her, not that it’s hard to do.

Hardbody Shout Out to Our New Sponsors

What once started as a place to randomly post news & photos, HARDBODY.com has evolved into a daily destination for thousands of people (men and women). That’s pretty cool if you ask me. It’s fun to hear comments and feedback at shows from you, the visitors. I can’t count the number of women who mentioned HARDBODY at TEAM UNIVERSE and I receive emails daily related to this site. The most consistent feedback I receive is that 1) you know the source of the information is accurate and accountable 2) it’s updated daily and often multiple times a day 3) it’s the only place where you can get a wide variety of news, events, info and more related only fitness, figure, bikini (bodybuilding to a lesser degree) and female sports. Sure there are other sites that you visit, I check them out too but they aren’t updated daily and in the same style as you get here. That’s not so say we rock and others suck, but you will consistently see something new every day on this site. You can also see an extension of this site in every issue of Muscle & Fitness Hers. Thanks to the folks at WEIDER, female competitors are now getting more ink in my “TWIST & TURNS” column. Again pretty cool.

All that being said this is an ideal place to attract new or grow existing business. The banners you see on this site help us grow. We’ve only begun to scratch the surface of what will happen here but it would be possible with out the likes of our two newest sponsors Pavel Ythjall and Julie Lohre. Pavel is a staff photographer for Muscle & Fitness and FLEX magazines. You can see his work in those magazines every month. One of the most popular features with the women has been the GIRLS ARE BACK section of FLEX magazine. The feature shows women in a hardcore, raw training setting with dramatic lighting. Those images are from the lense of Pavel Ythjall. He brings a different style and approach to a photoshoot as any woman whose worked with him will attest to. I say that as a good thing and he is one of the few photographers that gets a two jugs up approval for us. Check out his site (http://www.ythjall.com) and you’ll see the style separates him from most in the industry. Tell him HARDBODY sent ya.

The Girls are Back photos are bad ass.

Julie Lohre is an IFBB Fitness Pro and despite being away from the competitive stage, she hasn’t slowed down. Julie has been holding camps, training clients and many other things that are far too numerous to mention. You’re better off visiting http://julielohre.com to read all about what she has been doing as well as services she offers. She’s assembled a web site rich in content and is a consistent source of help information for women. Check out her site and you’ll see what I’m talking about. Don’t blame us if you end up spending too much time checking out all the info, ok you can blame us. In fact give Julie a shout and tell her HARDBODY sent ya.

Check out both of these HARDBODY sponsors. You can trust that they are legit and on our approved list. Thanks to Julie and Pavel for their support of the women in the industry.

Hardbody A-list: FLEX Booth Girls at The Olympia

Wow! That was my response when I found which women would be working at the FLEX booth at this year’s Olympia Expo. When FLEX put out the Olympia Opportunity back in June, hundreds of women responded.  The final list has been compiled I challenge anyone to find a hotter group of hardbodies in Las Vegas on September 25-26th. Who are these A-list women who got the call?

• Nicole Wilkins-Lee
• Monique Minton
• Kathleen Tesori
• Jodie Minear
• Zhanna Rotar
• Jennifer Celeste
• Ali Sonoma
• Amanda Carrier
• Dianna Dahlgren

Looking for an excuse to stop by the booth more than once and not appear as a creepy stalker? The women of the 2009 FLEX Swimsuit Issue (minus Jenn Gates, of course) will be at the booth on Saturday (September 26th) from 11:30 am to 1pm to sign copies of the 2009 Swimsuit issue and take pictures with fans.

Warning Letter Issued to American Cellular Laboratories Inc.

Another supplement company has been warned by the FDA.

The Los Angeles Times
reports:

The agency also issued a warning letter to American Cellular Laboratories Inc. for marketing and distributing body-building products containing synthetic steroid substances. The FDA said that although these products are marketed as dietary supplements, they are actually unapproved and misbranded drugs.

The FDA has received five adverse-event reports, including serious liver injury, in men taking products marketed as dietary supplements by American Cellular Laboratories including TREN-Xtreme and MASS Xtreme. Acute liver injury is known to be a possible side effect of using products that contain anabolic steroids. Some of the cases resulted in hospitalization, but there were no reports of death or acute liver failure.

“Products marketed for body-building and claiming to contain steroids or steroid-like substances are illegal and potentially quite dangerous,” said Commissioner of Food and Drugs Margaret A. Hamburg. “The FDA is taking enforcement action today to protect the public.”

It looks like things could become more challenging for supplement companies as the FDA is paying close attention. Don’t be surprised if you hear about more companies getting warnings from the FDA in the coming months.

Britt Miller… Bodybuilder turn Boxer?

Embrace the twitter peeps. You never know what nuggets of information you may find. Like this little gem from herbiceps’ twitter feed.

brittmiller.jpg

According to Michael Eckstut, owner of herbiceps, Britt Miller recorded four knock outs in a boxing event and collected $2500 in the process. Not too shabby of a night for Britt. Will we see Britt hang up the posing suit for good? Only time will tell but it’s fun to see things like this from the ladies.

20/20 Covers Performance-Enhancing Drug Issue

This is a rare piece… A mainstream media story that takes the angle that performance-enhancing drugs SHOULD be allowed. Stossel has an interesting take on the topic.

HOT HOT HOT – FLEX Swimsuit Issue Cover Preview

WOW! What can you say about the June 2009 issue of FLEX magazine? HOT? Ya, smoke’n hot. Here’s a sneak peak of the two cover choices. One of these two will be the cover that hits newstands.

I have my favorite, what about you? If you’ve signed up for the FLEX magazine newsletter you’re one of the first people to see the new cover choices and can cast your vote. Hardbody Exclusive: StarPhysique Award Flop

The StarPhysique Awards. What? You’ve never heard of them? You’d think that an event that professes to be the “The Oscars of the fitness industry” would have a little buzz behind it. Fitness model, Jennifer Nicole Lee issued a press release last month where you’d swear it was an event as big as her Oprah appeance.

“Being honored is a milestone in my career. I am humbled to be among the best of the fitness industry and Mixed Martial Arts industry. And I would like to thank all involved to make this incredible event happen. I would also like to congratulate all other fellow athletes who are being awarded, especially my fellow Team BSN athletes. This will be an event not to be missed!” says JNL.

It appears the “night to remember” is a night that will never happen. The StarPhysique Awards were to take place at the Four Seasons Hotel in Westlake Village, California this friday. Ticket prices start at $185 and go up from there, but there’s no mention on the event web site that this event won’t take place.

Less than a week out from the event Garba “Mister G” Onadja, the founder of this event, emailed the nominees informing them of the news. Mister G told the nominees that it was, “due to scheduling and venue agreements not being met”. He went on to say, “After careful thought and deliberations, the alternative venue being offered was simply unacceptable for the type of show and presentation that we have worked so hard to prepare.” Many of those who were nominated booked their flights and hotel stays weeks ago. The founder will certainly be reimbursing them, right? Don’t count on it. The response was, “I understand that in many cases airline tickets have been purchased and will try, to the best of our ability, to mitigate this with either additional tickets to the event (at no cost) or complimentary travel and hotel accommodations during the ceremony for our awardees.”

The founder reassured the nominees that the ceremony would be held at a later date and would confirm in the next two weeks the new date. Good thing because now Mister G is now going to attempt to get Mario Lopez and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to attend.

This is a great reminder to be cautious of events and people who are unproven. There will always be some one promising the moon and delivery nothing. Many people may have good intentions but should that be a free pass to under deliver? I don’t know Mister G or his intentions, but I’d like to give him the benefit of the doubt. An award show honoring hard-working individuals is cool but don’t compare an unproven, first year event to the Oscars. We all have to start some where but those who “get it” don’t try to be something or someone overnight.

I’ll keep you posted on any future developments with this event.

HARDBODY Exclusive: Interview with Fitness Icon Monica Brant

monicabrant1.jpg
Monica Brant heading back to the Figure International.

I caught up with Monica Brant moments after she received the news of her Arnold Invite. Monica will take the stage for the first time since the 2007 Olympia at the 2009 Figure International. Hardbody.com fans voted “YES” in a big way when asked if you’d like to see Mo return to the Arnold stage. Check out what Mo had to say about retiring, her fans and more…

How did you find out you made the invite list?
ISAAC HINDS! He is sooo fast!

Does this change your meal plans for Christmas?
Well, I’ll just have to make sure I get in my cardio and workouts… Since I am sitting around 133lbs right now it shouldn’t be too much to bring it on down for stage by end of FEB!

Not that it matters but what are you usually on stage?

Well… Since there isn’t ever a scale backstage to step on prior to stage. It is really hard for me to know EXACTLY! I typically leave the house before water depletion around 127/8.

Ah piece of cake then. 🙂

What made you decide to come back to the competition stage?
Just for the record… I have never told anyone that I retired. All statements made are rumors and speculations! Seriously, it has never come out of my mouth that I was retired. I realize I mentioned that IF I was to place lower than 3rd at the 07 Olympia we would consider me retiring… But after that placing of 7th – I still never told anyone that I retired!

I was invited to the AC in 08 — but was unable to perform do to some issues with my endorsement at the time. Then I wasn’t qualified for the Olympia based on my ’07 placings.

Otherwise, being on stage is also a great platform for my business stuff! I will be having some exciting news next year to share with fans. If you want to be one of the first to know my business, fans can sign up to receive my monthly newsletters via my home page of www.monicabrant.com (which is going to have a face lift beginning of the year!) Also, if anyone is interested, I have all new 2009 F.E.M. Camps listed on www.femcamp.net!!

What do you say to those who say you’re time has passed and should stop competing?
Whatever! Ha! Ha! I don’t buy it…And everyone has an opinion! I am sure the people that are saying that aren’t competitors. Keep in mind I am using the stage as a platform, I really haven’t ever expected to win! I figured it out back in 2003… I do it for the gazillion fans that are asking me, on a continual basis, to get back on stage!

What can fans expect to see from Mo in Columbus?
Just my best… As always!

Thanks Mo!
Thanks I

HardBody Photo of the Day: Alicia Harris

Sometimes it’s the images that happen at their most natural state that show a person’s true essence. This shot of Alicia Harris is one of those times. I had a great time shooting Alicia this summer in Vegas. They don’t call her “smiley” for nuthin.

Pick up the current issue of Muscle & Fitness Hers where you can read more about how she trained to turn Pro.

Hardbody FLEXclusive: Jenn Gates Behind The Scenes Photo Shoot

Props to FLEXonline.com and photographer Pavell Ythjall for this behind the scenes look at “The Girls Are Back” photo shoot. This shoot was done shortly after Jennifer Gates won the Figure Olympia title this year. The photos are featured in the newest FLEX magazine, in stores this Monday.

Here’s a sneak peak at a couple of the shots you won’t see in the magazine. This is a look at a Figure Olympia champ like you’ve never seen before. Great work on all who were involved and props to FLEX magazine for featuring the best in the Figure world. Check back Monday as we’ll be posting more Behind The Scenes images as well as a look at the new issue of FLEX magazine.

HardBody First Look: Flex Magazine – Mary Lado “Behind The Scenes” & Randy Couture/Brock Lesnar

This is a very special post for me. Why? I am pleased to say it is my first cover. No, it’s not me on the cover, which I’m sure we’re all thankful for, but rather a photo I took. I’ve had many other photos published over the years but to have your photo make the cover is a huge honor. Like many other things, you always remember your first.

It was also an honor to be part of this cover because it showcases UFC heavyweights, Randy Couture and Brock Lesnar. Their November 15th fight is being billed as the “Biggest fight in mixed martial arts history“. Pavell Ythjall photographed Randy and I photographed Brock for the cover as well as their training. It is with that, I’m ecstatic to provide a first look at the December 2008 issue of FLEX Magazine.

Those of you wondering what any of this has to do with fitness or figure, don’t fret. This isn’t a post just to toot my horn. FLEX magazine continues to feature the women and in this issue the featured profile is Mary Elizabeth Lado. Pavell Ythjall and FLEX were kind enough to provide “behind the scenes” photos from the shoot.

It’s an honor and privilege to contribute something in print.

Thank you ladies for your continual hardwork and we’ll do the best we can to showcase your accomplishments.

Ruth Silverman showing Hardbody some love

I like to bust Ruth Silverman‘s chops about a number of things. She usually turns and walks away or tells me to shut up. It’s all in good fun.

Ruth has covered the women’s side of the industry for a number of years for IRONMAN Magazine and before that she worked with other publications. The new issue of IRONMAN magazine (October 2008 – with Eric Broser on the cover) arrived in my mailbox yesterday. I alway flip towards the back to check on Lonnie Teper and Ruth’s columns. Ruth showed not only some of the ladies you’ve seen featured on hardbody.com some love but also a mention to yours truly. Props to Ruth for running the photo of Lenay Hernandez and giving this rising star some ink.

One of the best photographers in the biz proves why he is on top with his latest set of images. Terry Goodlad is able to bring out the best in every model and he’s proving it again this month. The newest issue of FLEX features fitness icon Monica Brant in some of the best photos of seen of her in recent years. Check out the gallery on bodysport.com with IFBB pro Melissa Pearo, hands down the best photos I’ve seen of her. This is proof that shooting with a talented photographer does nothing but up your stock in the fitness industry.
