Reebok and the UFC Announce 6-year Partnership

ufc reebok partnerships

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) announced a 6-year partnership with Reebok. Reebok will become the exclusive outfitter and apparel provider for the UFC with the new policy beginning the week of July 6, 2015. The announcement was met with mixed reviews from the fans but the general consensus amongst the fighters was positive. The new deal provides UFC fighters with a guaranteed income for each of their fights and they’ll also have the opportunity to generate royalty income from their own athlete-specific products.

A promo from Reebok was shown at the press conference.

“This partnership is much more than a licensing agreement,” said Matt O’Toole, President, Reebok. “It is a true collaboration between two great brands, which will not only give UFC a new and exciting look, but will harness the global reach of both brands to also benefit young people around the world, particularly those at risk of being involved in crime and violence.”

Sorry fans but you won’t see CONDOM DEPOT or other random brands across the fighters’ shorts in the octagon. The fighters will no longer be permitted to have sponsor logos on their athletic apparel during the fight, the official UFC fight week events and in any UFC-produced content. There will no longer be banners inside the octagon behind the fighters. Some of which looked more like NASCAR than anything.

WATCH THE PRESS CONFERENCE HERE:
UFC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Lorenzo Fertitta shared, “This will be the biggest non-broadcast partnership that our company has ever signed.”

Women’s UFC Bantamweight Champion, Ronda Rousey tells mmaFighting.com she has known about the partnership for awhile and helped them (Reebok) in the develop of the women’s line. In an interview after the press conference she shared, “Women’s clothing for MMA has never existed before so I’m excited to see what they come up with.” Rousey hasn’t had a major sports apparel sponsor and said, “It works out perfectly for me.” When asked if she has her own Reebok deal Rousey shied away from answering with a smile.

Reebok has found success by partnering with Crossfit, Les Mills and Spartan Race. Only time will tell how things unfold with their UFC deal but they are clearly invested in the sport for the long haul.

During the press conference and on the UFC’s twitter account we saw the hashtag #WhatDoYouFightFor. Reebok has posted this video on their Youtube channel which is the only thing that really addressed the hashtag to date.

Our training is mental battle, a community experience and a physical ass-kicking.
From MMA and Boxing to Kickboxing and Karate, our fights help us get fit – body, mind and soul.
This training is intense. This training is life-changing. This training has us inspired.
We are committed to improving human performance by building the best, most functional product for human movement.
This sport is no exception.

The fight was confirmed by UFC president Dana White on UFC Tonight. The women will be the co-main event along side the Light-Heavyweight title fight between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier.

Both women are undefeated in the octagon. Before Cat’s last fight the champ shared this on instagram.

Been waiting a long time for this fight to happen… Best of luck to @CatZingano tonight 👊😼

There’s a mutual respect between the two women and don’t expect too much shit talking leading into the fight. Rousey is coming off a 16 second routing over Alexis Davis in 175 and Zingano won via TKO over Amanda Nunes at 178. Let’s hope everyone stays healthy to kick the new year off with one helluva show.

US Wins First Major Women’s Volleyball Title

US wins first major women’s volleyball title
MILAN (AP) – Kimberly Hill led the United States to its first major women’s volleyball title, scoring 20 points in a 3-1 victory over China on Sunday in the world championships.

Hill had the final kill, and captain Christa Dietzen added 15 points in the Americans’ 27-25, 25-20, 16-25, 26-24 victory before 12,600 fans at the Mediolanum Forum.

“We came here to make history and we made it,” said U.S. coach Karch Kiraly, a three-time Olympic champion. “It was a tough battle, but we made it.”

The U.S. women had never won the world championships, World Cup or Olympics. The Americans finished second in the world championships in 1967 and 2002.

“It’s the first time for the USA and we made it,” said Dietzen, the Hopewell Township, Pennsylvania, player who had knee surgery in December. “We represented present and future volleyball programs, but most importantly we did it together.”

The 6-foot-4 Hill, from Portland, Oregon, was selected the tournament’s most valuable player and best spiker. She was 19 of 31 with only one fault and had 13 digs and 25 excellent receptions on 39 attempts.

“I feel ecstatic and happy and just cannot believe it is real,” Hill said. “The award was a surprise and I still cannot believe it either, it is just amazing. Tonight it is everything. Eating, drinking and we are just going to celebrate being together.”

Alisha Glass of Leland, Michigan, was honored as the best setter. She had 36 running sets, 53 still sets and four faults.

“I can’t find the words,” Glass said. “I am incredibly proud of this team, of the USA Volleyball organization, everybody that played a part. It was such a team win. We did something that’s never been done. This is only the beginning. We’re going to get better and better.”

Zeng Chunlei led China with 20 points.

“I would like to congratulate Lang Ping and her team,” Kiraly said. “They played a marvelous tournament. After we got a 2-0 lead we knew China would never give up. It was a battle to the end and they have some great young players, as do we.

“I hope that we will be playing against each other in the future. It is just good for the sport to have teams with such history performing at a high level.”

In Saturday’s semifinals, the U.S. stunned top-ranked Olympic champion Brazil 3-0.

Brazil beat Italy 25-15, 25-13, 22-25, 22-25, 15-7 in the bronze-medal match.

‘The Box’ Backlash – Crossfitters Hate Photoshopped Camille LeBlanc-Bazinet Cover

The Box Photoshop Camille
The Crossfit community is a tight knit group of people who tend to be extremely passionate about their sport. While some outsiders would argue they take their enthusiasm too far, I’d argue there are far worse things in life than to be fanatical about working out and following a specific nutrition plan. That’s a debate for another time. The reality is you don’t have to be a participant to appreciate the hard work and dedication it takes to become one of the elite athletes in Crossfit.

The Crossfit Games are held once a year, usually the end of July, and crown “The Fittest Woman (and man) on Earth.” Helluva title, right? It’s the holy grail of Crossfit and a sacred stature that few have reached. There’s no denying that if you win it, you’re a bad ass. This year’s female winner was Canadian Camille LeBlanc. Camille has landed multiple endorsement deals and unquestionably has a marketable look because of the hardbody she’s built. She trains like a beast and is a role model for women and men, in and out of Crossfit. She works hard, eats right, trains consistently and has fun along the way. Winning this year’s Crossfit Games makes her a no-brainer to grace the cover of a Crossfit magazine.

Camille was featured on Oxygen magazine’s last issue out of the Canadian offices (July 2013). On that cover they asked, “Could this be the fittest woman on earth?” In the Crossfit world the answer, albeit it officially validated a year later, would be YES!

camille leblanc oxygen coverCamille LeBlanc-Bazinet on Oxygen Magazine

The mag shut down for a stint and reopened under new publishers, Active Interest Media (AIM). AIM acquired Oxygen and two other titles previously published by Robert Kennedy but why is this important? AIM publishes ‘The Box’ magazine. Their website states The Box Magazine “serves the vast — and growing — population of CrossFitters. It educates new practitioners about CrossFit’s benefits, motivates existing members of the CrossFit community and advocates for the sport of CrossFit.”

The Box typically shows an athlete or athletes in workout attire on their cover. The magazine is published bi-monthly and has done a good job of featuring men and women on their covers over the years. It’s one of the few magazines that showcases an athlete as an athlete… until now. This month, The Box opted to show the newly crowned Fittest Woman on Earth® in a swimsuit, on a beach for their cover.

The Box CovrersTHE BOX covers

It’s not the first time she’s been on The Box cover. Camille was featured on the October-November 2012 cover and they called her “The Face of Fitness”. Pretty good call, right? So why would they stray from their usual covers and present Camille as a swimsuit model instead of an athlete? Great question and it’s one that has the Crossfit nation up in arms over. It’s not only because she’s presented as a swimsuit model but also the poor job they did “photoshopping” her.

Camille LeBlanc The Box CoverCamille LeBlanc-Bazinet on The Box cover in 2012 (left) and 2014 (right)

Let’s be clear. Yes, every magazine has “photoshopping” done to it. That’s the “reality” of the magazine biz however there’s a difference in recreating a body and retouching/editing one. Removing stray hairs, a bright spot in the skin and/or a skin blemish are part of retouching any image. I know, I’m a photographer and I edit photos daily. Did Camille get a bad photoshop job on her latest cover? Ya, her waist is the most obvious. She’s also got a sic set of abs but you’d never know that from the photo, in fact you’d wonder where they are if you had never seen her before.

There’s no reason to modify Camille, The FITTEST Woman on Earth, to be something she’s not. She’s not a swimsuit model. She never claims to be. She never strives to be one. When I interviewed her I asked her, “Do you feel like there’s pressure on women to look a certain way in CrossFit?” She shared, “Yes, I think women still want to be small and ripped, but I think we shouldn’t care about the way we look as long as our fitness is going up.” Camille’s fitness went up since then and she didn’t worry about being small and ripped as it’s irrelevant to her winning The Game. It’s a too bad The Box thought showcasing her as smaller and more ripped would be relevant to selling magazines. I find the corny “Life’s a Beach” and “awash in opportunity” nearly as silly as the image.

camille leblanc The Box

The Box 2014 Cover with Camille Leblanc, The Fittest Woman on Earth.

The Crossfit nation has called bullshit on the cover and you have to appreciate some of the comments being posted online about it. Let’s start with the posting of the image on The Box’s Facebook page.

Ouch. I’m guessing not quite the response they expected but BRAVO for fans and readers calling it out.

When the fans asked (many demanded) for an explanation, The Box demonstrated how NOT to respond. Public Relations 101 – don’t try to be funny and don’t add fuel to a fire. You’d be more productive pissing into the wind. Here’s what they posted.

An angry mob photo. Funny. Ha. Not. FAIL.

A couple quotes from fans…

“I am NEVER negative and I keep my page that way for a reason….. But i just couldn’t help but feel sad just quite mad a magazine such a “The BOX magazine” would photoshop camilles picture and take away her muscles… Why??????

We’re suppose to EMBRACE our hard earned work not “hide” or take away from them and “conform” to what society wants. Truly disappointed in this one.
Always Always EMBRACE your muscles ladies… ALWAYS!!!”
CFStrongWomen FB

Reddit members are sounding off too.

The second I saw the cover I could tell something was wrong immediately. The thing is, Camille is obviously beautiful and strong and fit, but we all know she doesn’t have the smallest waist and that doesn’t matter at all. – emptycalsxycuriosityDeuce Gym

“That is insulting. She’s worked her ass off to get where she is and then this magazine photoshops her muscles OFF? I can’t wrap my brain around this… Usually people would photoshop MORE definition not take definition away. Wtf.” – patrickkevinsays

“The saddest thing about it is it buys into the fear that women who lift are too bulky/manly to be conventionally attractive. Women still need to be soft and curvy (but still thin) to be beautiful. Even the fittest woman on earth doesn’t have the ‘ideal’ body shape so they photoshopped out her amazing abs that allow her to do all the amazing gymnastic movements she’s known for.” – viaaa

Another Crossfit magazine, BoxLife, posted…

WOD Talk magazine was a little more subtle with their jab at the cover and posted…

As I was finishing this article The Box Editor-in-Chief posted a response on Facebook. I couldn’t help put do a face palm in horror at the opening, “My name is Jordana Brown, and I’m the editor-in-chief of The Box magazine. Before everyone looks at my profile and starts doubting, I’ll tell you this: I don’t have a robust profile here because I hate Facebook. I hate Facebook because I don’t trust it.” Way to embrace the fans/readers ON FACEBOOK while they are going bat shit crazy over your latest cover. It doesn’t matter if YOU like Facebook or not, it’s the medium you chose to post your latest cover on. Any who…

Jordana defends the cover by saying, “A professional photo shoot with an experienced photographer who uses camera angles and poses the athlete to compose a shot, along with expert lighting, hair and makeup, will result in photos that look completely unlike anything you might find from a Google image search. In fact, it was our intent to show you a Camille you haven’t seen before — and to prove that beauty and strength coexist in her perfect body.”

Very true however the same professional photographer was used for previous covers. The same photographer used “expert lighting” and “camera angles” to compose every previous cover shot. So that’s a ridiculous statement in defense of the image. Jordana isn’t wrong in the statement but wrong to use it as a defense for this cover and for this athlete. The same athlete they’ve shown on the cover before. Oh right, I forgot they wanted to show “a Camille you haven’t seen before” and “prove that beauty and strength coexist”. They accomplished the first part but how ridiculous on the second part. Everyone who has followed Camille (cough, cough your magazine readers and those commenting on the social media platform you hate) knows she embodies strength and beauty. They didn’t need to see a poorly photoshopped image to know they coexist. And back to that pesky photoshop topic. Jordana defends it by sharing, “Did we do some color correction and use Photoshop on the image? Yes. Did we airbrush or retouch Camille’s abs, legs, muscles? No. Did her body need any work? No. Do we regret having done anything at all? Yes.”

Only those who have seen the RAW, unedited image will know for certain what was done to it. At this point does it matter? The readers aren’t stupid and regardless of what was done or not done to the image it doesn’t reflect the buying audience of The Box. They clearly don’t give a crap about seeing The Fittest Woman on Earth in a swimsuit on the beach. You might want to buy the issue since I’ll bet it’s the first and last time you see a beach / swimsuit cover.

What can we learn from The Box Backlash?
Don’t play readers and fans for fools.
Strong is sexy.
Strong is beautiful.
Be authentic.
Crossfitters hate photoshop badly photoshopped images.

Also of note, no one (myself included) is bashing or blaming Camille for the cover. Some people have questioned “how could she allow this” and “how would she approve this cover”. When you shoot for a magazine (this goes for a model and photographer) you have no idea what image will run and how it will be used. Cover images are often swapped out a dozen times before going to print. Many times right before press there will be a completely different image or even a new model.

Camille is strong. Camille is beautiful. Camille is a bad ass.

Check out her instagram account and you can follow her strength and beauty as she presents it.

ASP Becomes the World Surf League

World Surf League

Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) will become World Surf League (WSL) in 2015. Five-Time World Champion Stephanie Gilmore shared, “Changing the name to the World Surf League is about taking the sport to more people, to broaden the audience, to let people understand that this is the place for professional surfing.”

Kelly Slater, 11-time World Champion, is on board with the name change as well. Slater joined Stephanie and others in a video. “I like the idea of changing ASP to the World Surf League. The ASP isn’t exactly self-explanatory.”

ASP CEO Paul Speaker released a letter to the community along with a video regarding the announcement.

To the ASP community,

At the start of the 2015 season, we will change our name to the World Surf League (WSL). We’re making this change because we believe the new name is easier to understand, and gets us on a better track to serve our fans, athletes and partners, and to grow the great sport of professional surfing worldwide.

There’s been a lot of change in the last two years. Part of it you can see, such as new venues and enhanced live broadcasts. Some of it is behind the scenes. All of it is driven by the twin goals of preserving the heritage and culture of surfing while, at the same time, creating an even better foundation to grow our sport in the future.

We want you to know that changing our name was a carefully considered decision for us. We felt it was important to share this idea with as many people in the ASP community as we could, from athletes to past world champions to event partners. In the end, we were greatly comforted by the fact that not a single person we spoke with opposed changing names to the World Surf League. Not one.

This is a decision we’ve made with our community and you can see their reactions for yourself.

We understand that for many of you reading this, the letters “ASP” have significant meaning and that this news might be unsettling. We hope you will give us the benefit of the doubt and that, over time, you will come to see this change as positive for the sport we all love. At the end of the day, professional surfing’s DNA remains intact: we’re about the world’s best surfers in the world’s best waves. That will never change.

From day one, our commitment to you has been that we will do everything in our power to improve the overall experience for fans, athletes and partners. Of course, we still have a lot of work to do, but we are confident that we are heading in the right direction.

We want to salute everyone upon whose shoulders we stand, from the creators of the ASP to their forefathers at what was originally known as the International Professional Surfers (IPS). It was the hard work of all of these people that provided the platform that we all share today and it is with them, and with you, that we look forward to ushering in the new era of the World Surf League.

Sincerely,

Paul Speaker
Chief Executive Officer

Sam “Sweet Feet” Gordon is Back

sam gordon
Sam “Sweet Feet” Gordon made national news when the video of her football highlights went viral. “Going Viral” is often an overused term but in Sam’s instance it’s a case study in what it truly means to “go viral” with a video. She went from unknown 9 year-old (at the time) girl on a football team to a Wheaties Box, multiple tv show appearances and hanging with the NFL commissioner during the Super Bowl.

Sam Gordon and FriendsIt’s never too early to be a hardbody.

Sam has set up her own Youtube Channel and been diligently updating it with a variety of videos. In the videos you’ll see she has charisma, talent and isn’t afraid of hard work. After watching her speed and agility workouts you’ll see why she’s able to smoke the boys on the field.

Sam shows why she’s a champion in her latest video. As the video shows her yards ahead of the pack she shares, “We started out with conditioning and I wanted to set the pace for my teammates.”

13-Year-Old Mo’Ne Davis Throws Like A Girl

13-Year-Old Mo'Ne Davis Throws Like A Girl

Mo’Ne Davis throws like a girl. She is a girl. She’s the first girl to throw a shut out in Little League World Series (LLWS) history. At just 13-years-old she’s already become a bit of a sports celebrity.

In an Associated Press story she shared, “It’s very unreal. I never thought at the age of 13 I would be a role model.” Davis went on to say, “Hopefully, more girls play Little League.”

She isn’t the first girl to play in the LLWS, but it doesn’t make her accomplishment any less remarkable. The first female to play in the Little League World Series was Kathryn “Tubby” Johnston Massar. In the summer of 1950, Kathryn cut her hair short and used the nickname “Tubby” to give the impression she was a boy so she could play baseball. Masser, now 78, told the Associated Press, “It’s truly amazing. I’m very happy to see girls playing.”

Mo’Ne’s instagram account already has over 8,500 fans with just three posts.

Davis became the fourth American girl to play in the LLWS and a total of 18 girls have played over the tournament’s 68-year history.

In an interview earlier this week, FOX NEWS’ Eric Bolling asked Mo’Ne about playing in a more “female friendly sport like soccer”. She let’s him know she plays soccer but it’s not her favorite sport. When Bolling’s co-host asks if she could strike him out Mo’Ne doesn’t hesitate with saying “yes”. Eric chuckles and says, “now there’s a challenge.” Seriously dude?

Let’s hope he sticks to his promise of being “up for that challenge” after the Little League World Series and Mo’Ne can show him how a 13-year old girl throws.

Forbes’ Top 10 Highest-paid Female Athletes of 2014

top 10 highest paid female athletes

Forbes has released it’s highest paid female athletes of 2014 and not surprising the list is mostly made up of tennis players. Seven of the top ten are tennis players with the other three coming from figure skating, golf and racing. Forbes breaks down the list in detail on their web site and notes that rising stars Ronda Rousey (UFC), Sloane Stephen (tennis) and Michelle Wie (golf) just missed the cut of $5.5 million to be considered.

Forbes based their top 10 list on prize money, salary, licensing, appearances and endorsements from June 2013 to June 2014. Only Polish tennis star Agnieszka Radwanska made more from prize money than endorsements. Every other athlete earns the bulk of their total earnings from endorsements.

#1 Maria Sharapova – Tennis

Prize money: $2.4 million
Endorsements: $22 million

#2 Li Na – Tennis

San Antonio Spurs Hire Becky Hammon as NBA Assistant

SPURS HIRE WNBA STAR BECKY HAMMON AS ASSISTANT
Via bigstory.ap.org
As a 5-foot-6 point guard, decorated WNBA veteran Becky Hammon has never had the experience of shattering a backboard with a dunk.

She’s busting through the glass ceiling instead.

The San Antonio Spurs hired Hammon as an assistant coach on Tuesday, making her the first full-time, paid female assistant on an NBA coaching staff. When Hammon retires from her 16-year WNBA career at the end of the San Antonio Stars’ season, she will immediately move to the staff of the defending NBA champions, working with the revered Gregg Popovich on scouting, game-planning and the day-to-day grind of practice like no woman has ever done before.

“Nothing in my life has really ever been easy. I’ve always been someone who did it uphill,” Hammon said. “I’m up for challenges. I’m up for being outside the box, making tough decisions and challenges. … And I’m a little bit of an adrenaline junkie. Throw those all in there and this was the perfect challenge and opportunity.”

That makes her fit right in with the Spurs, an organization with a reputation for bold decisions. Popovich and general manager R.C. Buford have long been at the forefront of the league’s international influx and earlier this summer hired European coaching legend Ettore Messina as an assistant.

During the 2001-02 season, Cleveland Cavaliers coach John Lucas brought Lisa Boyer into the team’s practices and some games. Boyer, now an assistant at South Carolina, was not paid by the Cavaliers and did not travel with the team, but did work with the players and coaches that season.

“I very much look forward to the addition of Becky Hammon to our staff,” Popovich said in a statement released by the team. “Having observed her working with our team this past season, I’m confident her basketball IQ, work ethic and interpersonal skills will be a great benefit to the Spurs.”

But Popovich and Buford were not available in person and Hammon had the spotlight entirely to herself.

“Congratulations to Becky on today’s announcement,” Boyer said in a statement. “It’s a great thing for her and for the NBA. I am still so thankful to John Lucas for giving me the opportunity to work with his NBA team during my time with the Cleveland Rockers. His staff and players welcomed me as a coach, and it was an incredible experience for me to spend that season with them.”

Last season, Hammon attended Spurs practices, film sessions and sat behind the bench at home game after suffering a torn ACL that kept her from playing. She’s been friends with Tony Parker and Tim Duncan since competing in an NBA All-Star shooting competition in 2008, a familiarity that will help as she makes her transition to coaching the two stars.

“As far as women coaching men, it’s really silly. People ask me all the time, will there ever be a woman player in the NBA?” Hammon said. “To be honest, no. There are differences. The guys are too big, too strong and that’s just the way it is.

“But when it comes to things of the mind, things like coaching, game-planning, coming up with offensive and defensive schemes, there’s no reason why a woman couldn’t be in the mix and shouldn’t be in the mix.”

It’s been a long time coming for female basketball players and coaches who have long dreamed of getting a chance in the NBA.

“I was so excited and pleased and the one thing that people have to remember is that the San Antonio Spurs don’t do anything for effect,” said Nancy Lieberman, a former star player who was a head coach in the NBA Development League in 2009 and now serves as the GM of the Texas Legends. “That’s not who they are. They don’t do this for the record-breaking barrier. They do things out of respect.

“And the fact that coach Popovich has this much respect for Becky’s basketball IQ, for how she handles herself with the guys in practice, her ability to relate to them, I’m sure he saw so much when she was working with them last fall. I’m sure he didn’t hire her because she was a woman. I’m sure he hired her because she was the best person for the job.”

“This will open the door for other women, even like myself,” Lieberman added. “My goal is to coach in the NBA and you’ve got to start somewhere. So this is a great day.”

Charlotte Hornets sideline reporter Stephanie Ready, who served as an assistant on the Coppin State men’s team as well as in the D-League, called Popovich the perfect person to hire Hammon “because he’s proven he has a tremendous track record and he does not make bad decisions.”

“That’s the first step, having the precedent set is very important,” Ready said. “A lot of it also is now women will know these jobs are available. In the past, a lot of women probably didn’t try because they didn’t think it was possible. I think you may very well see an increase in seeing some females hired.”

Hammon has a reputation of being a smart, hard-nosed, tough-minded player. She made six All-Star teams and averaged 13.1 points in her 16 seasons with the Stars and New York Liberty.

Hammon was receiving congratulatory messages from all over, including from Lieberman, Boyer and Lakers star Kobe Bryant.

“I love seeing people I’ve been involved with have an opportunity in life to have these types of experiences,” said Stars coach Dan Hughes, who has coached Hammon for eight years. “This one is unique. She’s ready for it, she’ll do a great job.”

Even tennis great Billie Jean King weighed in on the hire, congratulating the Spurs for acquiring “a key person based on their qualifications and not allowing gender to play a role in their decision.”

But like it was only a matter of time before a woman got a chance to coach in the NBA, it’s also only a matter of time before said coach finds herself in Popovich’s crosshairs.

“I’m sure Pop will be yelling at me soon enough,” Hammon said, “with the rest of them.”

Camille Leblanc-Bazinet Tops The 2014 Crossfit® Women Rankings

2014 Crossfit

Canadian Camille Leblanc-Bazinet competed in her fifth Reebok CrossFit Games and finished on top of the podium for the first time. Camille beat out the 2011 and 2012 champion, Annie “Iceland Annie” Thorisdottir by 40 points. In 2013, Camille finished in 16th place but bounced back to claim the top spot this year. Prior to this year’s Games her highest finish was sixth in 2012. Camille’s gymnastic background proved to be helpful in route to her fist win at the Games. “I attacked more of my weaknesses. I worked my ass off. Every year, you get better at finding your weaknesses,” Leblanc said in post win interview.

Thorisdottir was second, and Julie Foucher finished in third.

Olympian Alysia Montaño Runs Race 8 Months Pregnant

Alysia Montaño is known as the “Olympic runner with the flower in her hair.” She’s an accomplished middle distance runner with five national championships and represented the U.S. in the 2012 Olympic Games. Montaño is still the runner with a flower in hair, but  this week she was the “running pregnant lady”. On Thursday, Alysia ran the 800 meters in the U.S. track and field championships, nearly eight months pregnant. Despite being 35 seconds slower than her personal best, it wasn’t about setting records or even winning the race.

In a phone interview with espnW Montano said, “This is what it looks like for a professional woman, first of all, continuing her career and pursuing her dream and starting a family simultaneously.” Alysia was cool, calm and collected in her interview just like she was while running the race.

As you  might expect, the public has been chiming in with their opinions and not all of them are positive. Anyone who speaks negatively about Alysia’s race should take time to educate themselves. Pregnancy isn’t a disease. It isn’t a disability. Exercising while pregnant isn’t a bad thing, in fact it’s enocouraged. Montano’s doctors were “100% on board” with her running the race. There will always be misguided comments from the uneducated and ill-informed. Kudos to Alysia for being bold and embracing her pregnancy in a positive light.

Alysia received a standing ovation from those in attendance and when asked about it she says with a laugh, “even though I came in last, I was the first pregnant lady.”

Follow her journey not only as an athlete but also as a role model. Visit alysiamontano.com and follow her on twitter @AlysiaMontano. Read more on espnW.com.

Celebrate Olympic Day with a Quiz

Happy Olympic Day! Every year on June 23, Olympic Day commemorates the birth of the modern Olympic Games. The event was first introduced in 1948 and was established to help promote the Olympic Values and participation in sport across the world. More than 160 countries around the globe take part in the celebration.

2014 Olympic Day Logo

In the U.S., Olympic Day events range the gamut from small to large events. Find out what Olympic Day Events happening in your area and how you can participate.

Test your Olympic knowledge in this true or false quiz. The quiz is targeted for children 12-13 years old however I’d guess most adults wouldn’t score 100%.

TRUE OR FALSE OLYMPIC QUIZ

Q1 – Each colour of the Olympic rings represents a particular continent.
False – This is a misconception. In reality, the rings represent the union of the five continents and the coming-together of the whole world’s athletes at the Olympic Games. As for the colours of the flag, they were chosen because at least one of them (blue, black, red, yellow, green and white) can be found in each national flag.

Q2 – One of the missions of the Olympic Movement is to promote peace in the world.
True – “The goal of Olympism is to place sport at the service of the harmonious development of humankind, with a view to promoting a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity.” This is the second of the six Fundamental Principles of Olympism set out in the “Olympic Charter”, the document which governs the organisation, actions and functioning of the Olympic Movement.

Q3 – The Games host city is chosen in a draw from among the candidate cities.
False – The IOC members elect the Olympic Games host cities with an absolute majority (i.e. half the votes plus one). This happens seven years before the Games are held, at a meeting called the Session. Custom dictates that the IOC President does not take part in the vote.

Q4 – The Olympic Anthem was written by Rod Stewart, a 1980s singer.
False – The music was composed by Spiros Samaras and the words were written by Costis Palamas. The Olympic Anthem was played for the first time in 1896, at the Opening Ceremony of the first modern Olympic Games. It was later replaced by several other musical compositions (but none by Rod Stewart). It was only in 1955 that it finally became the official anthem.

Q5 The Olympic motto – CITIUS ALTIUS FORTIUS – means “Proud, tall, strong”.
False – The three Latin words mean “faster, higher, stronger”. These three words encourage the athlete to give the best of himself during competition. To better understand the motto, we can compare it to the Olympic saying: “The important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle, the essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.”

Q6 – Ice hockey and figure skating were on the Summer Games programme.
Neither true nor false – Skating was on the programme of the 1908 Games and ice hockey from 1920. At this time, there was no distinction between the winter and summer Games and the events could be staged over several months. It was only from 1925 that the IOC officially decided to separate the two events.

Q7 – Pierre de Coubertin, reviver of the Games, took part in the Games under a false name.
True – His “Ode to Sport” entered under a pseudonym for the Stockholm (1912) Olympic Games, won him first prize in the Art and Literature Contest, an event on the programme at the time.

Q8 – 50kg stone-lifting was on the Olympic programme.
True – It was part of the gymnastics all-round event in 1900, as was rope climbing and the pole vault! Sports, disciplines and events… the Games programme is continuously updated. Today, the Summer Games comprises 26 sports and the Winter Games seven. In the selection criteria it is specified that only sports that apply the World Anti-Doping Code can be included or remain on the program me.

Q9 – London is the only city to have hosted three Olympic Games.
True – London hosted the Olympic Games in 1908, 1948 and 2012. Six other cities have hosted the Games twice: Athens (1896 and 2004), Paris (1900 and 1924), St Moritz (1928 and 1948), Lake Placid (1932 and 1980), Los Angeles (1932 and 1984) and Innsbruck (1964 and 1976).

Q10 – The marathon was on the programme of the Olympic Games of Antiquity.
False – The marathon was not staged at the Games in Antiquity. This race was created for the Athens Games in 1896 to commemorate the legend of the Greek soldier who, in 490 BC, ran from Marathon to announce to the people of Athens the military victory over Persia (distance: about 34.5km). At the London 1908 Games, the distance of the race was extended, from 25 to 26.2 miles (42.195km), so that it could end in front of the Royal Box. This distance then became the standard for the marathon event and has remained so until today.

U.S. Women’s Soccer Star Hope Solo Arrested

KIRKLAND, Wash. (AP) — U.S. women’s soccer star Hope Solo was arrested at a suburban Seattle home early Saturday on charges of assaulting her sister and 17-year-old nephew, police said.

Officers responded to the sister’s home just before 1 a.m. after receiving a 911 call that a woman at the Kirkland residence was hitting people and that she refused to stop or leave, the Kirkland Police Department said in a news release.

They found Solo intoxicated and upset, saw injuries on her nephew and her sister, and arrested her after speaking with those present and determining that she was the primary aggressor, the release said.

She was booked into jail for investigation of two counts of fourth-degree domestic violence assault, and she was expected to remain in custody until an appearance Monday at Kirkland Municipal Court.

It wasn’t immediately clear if she had a lawyer. A telephone number listed for her was not accepting incoming calls Saturday, and the voice mail for a listing at the sister’s home was full.

The sister was not identified by police, but in her memoir, Solo writes that she has a half sister named Terry.

Solo, 32, has won two Olympic gold medals as a goalkeeper for the U.S. women’s national team. She also plays with the Seattle Reign of the National Women’s Soccer League.

“We are aware of the situation with Hope and are now gathering information,” the Reign posted on the team’s Twitter feed.

In 2012, she married former Seattle Seahawks tight end Jerramy Stevens. He was arrested just before their wedding for investigation of assault after a disturbance involving her, but he was not charged.

Solo said soon afterward that there never was an assault and that she and her new husband were happy.

“It’s unfortunate what the media can do to judge before the facts are out there. It’s hard to see, but it’s a hard truth, and it’s part of life,” she said then. “I’m happy. I’m happily married. I would never stand for domestic violence. I’ve never been hit in my life.”

World Cup Bouldering Returns to Vail’s GoPro Mountain Games

May 22, 2013 (VAIL, Colo.)– The 2014 GoPro Mountain Games will be center stage for the best competitive climbers in the world when the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) Bouldering World Cup hits Vail this summer. An international field of climbing superstars will face off on Friday and Saturday, with the finals taking place on the massive bouldering wall located near Gondola One at the foot of Vail Mountain at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 7. Immediately following the Finals spectators can enjoy a free Cold War Kids concert in the heart of Vail Village.

At the GoPro Mountain Games bouldering events, athletes free climb the man-made climbing structure and are scored based upon their ability to complete a succession of increasingly difficult routes throughout several rounds of competition. The competitor’s score is determined by the overall number of routes completed, the number of attempts needed and is also affected by the climber’s ability to reach a bonus hold set within the course.

Austria’s dynamic Anna Stohr (AUT) will vie for her fourth GoPro Mountain Games gold at this year’s IFSC Bouldering World Cup event. She will be faced with intense competition from the likes of Akiyo Noguchi (JPN) who placed second at last year’s Games and American favorite Alex Puccio who finished third. Other likely contenders include Alex Johnson (USA), Shauna Coxsey (GBR), Juliane Wurm (GER) and Angela Payne (USA).

An impressive lineup of strong male climbers will try to upset current champion Dmitri Sharafutdinov (RUS) who simultaneously won last year’s event and the 2013 IFSC Bouldering Overall World Cup championship. Challenging Sharafutdinov are last year’s silver and bronze winners Rutam Gelmanov and Jorg Verhoeven (NED) and Killian Fischhuber (AUT) who won the event in Vail in 2011 and 2012. American climber Daniel Woods will have a home field advantage against a daunting field of international male competitors.

On Sunday, June 8 at 11 a.m. the climbing wall will be open to a citizen’s competition including a paraclimbing division, giving aspiring climbers the chance to compete on the same venue as the pros, with over 32 graded climbing problems to choose from. Earlier in the day, the wall will be open for youngsters, with the Youth Bouldering competition kicking off at 8 a.m.
