Behind The Hardbody: Libby DiBiase – Mom, Crossfit Athlete & More

Libby Dibaise is a HARDBODY. She’s built rock solid physique with years of gymnastics, soccer, track and crossfit. Libby not only looks the part of a hardbody but she also lives it. We caught up with the Omaha native to learn more about her background, how she became sponsored by Reebok and Gaspari Nutrition and insight into the world of crossfit. Libby also shares some advice for moms and whether or not Omaha Steaks live up to the hype.

Name:
Libby DiBiase

Occupation:
Nutrition Consultant, Team Gaspari Athlete, Reebok Crossfit Athlete

Born in:
Omaha, NE

Currently live in:
Omaha, NE

What’s the best thing about living in Omaha?
We have all four season’s here, it’s not too small of city, but not to big either. I love it.

What’s the one thing you wish you could change about the Big O?
Winter. It get’s way to cold here for my liking.

Is the steak really good or a myth?
Oh yeah, no myth, Omaha Steaks is where it’s at.

What’s the best cut to order?
Filet.

What sports did you play growing up?
I started out in gymnastics and soccer and slowly transitioned into track and field leading up into high school.

Favorite sport to watch?
Gymnastics

What was your favorite event in track?
4x100m Being part of team is so much fun no matter what sport, I always felt like I ran a lot faster than individuals races since I had other people depending on me. Also, the 100m and 300 hurdles. Nothing over 400m, that’s way too long.

Are you a girly girl or more of a tomboy?
A girly girl. Even though I throw around heavy weight and get sweaty and nasty when I workout, I still like to get my hair done and put my makeup on. A girl’s got to look good right?

Who am I to argue with that?

When did you first start lifting weights?
My sophomore year of high school.

What would you tell other women who think weights will turn them into looking like dudes?
Genetics largely determines how we look, so it would sure take a lot to make any women look like a man without genetics and/or drugs. Lifting weights makes you strong and being strong keeps you young.

What’s the silliest comment a dude has said to you about being buff?
Did you get arrested today?
No, why? For having those guns.
Seriously, this was said to me.

Did that line work?
No, absolutely not, that’s no way to pick up a girl.

How long have you been crossfitting?
Around 6 years

When someone asks what crossfit is how would you describe it to them?
It’s difficult to explain without experiencing it, but in short, it’s weightlifting mixed with track and field and gymnastics. We also use rowing, plyometrics, and strongman implements as big part of our training. It’s different everyday, it’s intense, and most importantly it actually works.

Were you skeptical at first or loved it from day one?
No, I loved it. I get bored so quick so that’s why I kept coming back, since it is different everyday, I was hooked.

What do you say to the people who claim crossfit promotes bad form and you are more prone to injuries?
I think that people watch videos on the internet of people doing crossfit workouts, and they think that’s crossfit. Crossfit does not promote bad form, but crossfit does promote results, with that being said, when people push for maximum intensity in sport and strength and conditioning technique is not going to be perfect. The best crossfit athletes and the best coaches view technique as the most critical piece to intensity and intensity is the most critical piece to results. New athletes will always move like new athletes and new coaches will always coach like new coaches so there will always be some bad technique out there. But doing functional movements with bad technique is still safer than not doing them at all. Obviously we would like to have functional movements with good technique. All sports have injuries. Is football dangerous? Is soccer? Gymnastics? Hockey?…..etc.

Is the head band part of your signature workout attire?
Lol haha Yeah, Since I started I’ve always worn a bandana or headband. Usually I just cut the sleeve off a t-shirt and wrap it around my head, total jerry rig.

Will you be coming out with your own line of headbands or just keep cutting off sleeves whenever you need a new one?
That’s a good idea, but in the meantime, yes, I will keep cutting off sleeves until I find something else I like better!

Do you follow the paleo diet and live and breathe the crossfit culture?
For the most part I eat paleo, but I add in oatmeal and protein powder. I’m not super strict. I found the best way to eat healthy is to just have those foods in your house. If you don’t have any sugar, starches or processed foods, you won’t eat them. It’s the best thing I’ve discovered.

Do you eat differently before a competition then your usual day – if so what changes?
Nope I eat the same. I might eat a little more than usual since we might have multiple workouts in a day.

Any experience on what to avoid on game day?
I have learned to not over analyze any workout. Grandit there is strategy involved in some of the workouts, but if I think about them too much it ends up hurting me rather than helping me.

Favorite crossfit workout?
Anything with heavy thrusters and muscle up’s

Least favorite?
Rowing and farmer’s carries.

Will we see you in the individual or team games this year?
Well, our regional was just a fre weeks ago. They took top 60 from sectionals. I went as an Individual this year and I wound up getting 9th overall. They take top 3 to the world games. I wasn’t disappointed in my performances since physically I knew I did the best I could. Obviously there were little things I could of done better in some of the workouts, but it does sting not making it, it just wasn’t my year. It gives me a whole year to get stronger and work on little things. Our team, Crossfit Omaha got 4 th as a team in regionals. They take top 3 also for the world games. They just missed the podium. This year will be the first year I haven’t’ gone to the games since 2008, either as an individual or on the team. But, I think this experience for all of us at regionals will mentally make us stronger and hungrier for next year.

Do you think the competition is getting tougher as more people discover crossfit?
Yes, every year someone comes out of the woodwork, that’s going to happen. Since Crossfit linked up with Reebok, more and more people know what it is,and know you can compete. The purse for the games is also getting larger. So, I think we might see professional athletes from other sports dabble in crossfit too.

Gym you train at?
Crossfit Omaha

Why that gym over others?
This was the first Crossfit gym affiliated in Nebraska. It started out in the strength and conditioning gym at the University where I ran track. They accumulated so many clients that Ricky Frausto and Joe Westerlin, the owners, decided to open there own crossfit box. So I have stuck with them ever since. The coaching there is phenomenal. To me, that is what set’s apart this gym to others. It’s the little things they help us with (technique, efficiency, and transitions) We have had a handful of individual and teams qualify for the games also.

If I’m joining a crossfit gym for the first time – what should I look for?
Crossfit is not a franchise that is why every gym is unique. You have to find the best fit for you, to make sure it’s a welcoming environment and that technique is always taught prior to workouts.

If someone is new to crossfit how often would recommend they do it?
I would tell them to not be intimidated or scared to start. Everything is universally scalable, so everyone can do it. If they are new and starting out, I would still recommend 3 days on one day off.

Which of your athletic background has helped you the most in Crossfit?
I would say probably gymnastics. There is a lot of different gymnastics movements involved in crossfit and you use a lot of upper body strength in a lot of the workouts.

Areas you need to improve?
I always have areas I need to improve on. Mostly Olympic lifts, endurance, and grip strength. My hands are the size of a five year old boy, so I’m constantly working on ways I can improve grip for heavy lifts.

Ha. So  man hands is an advantage. Gotcha.

How many days a week do you crossfit?
3 days on, one day off.

Do you lift weights other than your crossfit workouts?
No not usually. If I don’t do a crossfit workout I’ll usually just do Olympic Lifting. But, I’m up for most anything, everyone started out lifting isolation or doing the normal one body part at a time workout. So anything to keep me active and is fun. I’m down for.

You competed in Figure before, ya?
Ya, once.

Ever think about doing another one?
No, I Iike food. Just not for me. But I am very impressed with anyone who does that, it takes a lot of hard work and dedication.

What female athletes do you admire – past or present?
I have 2 right now. Annie Sakamoto. She is basically the original OG of crossfit. I watched her in videos back in 2007 and thought; I wish I could be as good as her. She never competed until last year, she made it to the games, and she made it this year also. She has 2 kids, and most of all she always has a smile on her face when she’s competing. She has fun, and that’s what it’s all about. The second one would be Ronda Rousey she is a fellow Team Gaspari Athlete, and a MMA Strikeforce champ. Basically she can beat up the guys, and you wouldn’t want to mess with her, she’ll kick you’re a**.

Sponsors:
Reebok Crossfit, Gaspari Nutrition & Atlas Power Wraps

What advise would you give to women who are seeking sponsorships or what has helped you not only get but keep your endorsements?
Well, this is what I love to do, and If you do what you love, people will catch on and start noticing. Put yourself out there, you have nothing to lose.

How did you connect with Reebok?
Reebok actually just contacted me at work one day. They just called me up and said they were interested in meeting with me, and told me all about what they were doing with crossfit, and how it was going to move forward.

Gaspari found you at an event, right?
Ha, yeah. It was a very random way I met everyone from the company. I was competing in a team crossfit competiton at the UFC expo in Houston. The phone I had then always died. I really needed and outlet so the closest booth was Gaspari Nutrition. So I walked over and asked if I could “borrow” their outlet for a little bit. Struck up and little conversation with them and a month later I was linked up with the company. It’s crazy how things happen and who you end up meeting!

Favorite Gaspari product?
Myofusion Probiotic Chocolate. Great to cook with, Also, detonate, should be out soon, just wait.

I read somewhere that you cross fit up until your pregnancy with your son – true?
Yes, that is true. I worked out until the day before I went into labor. I’m pretty sure that a workout I did put me into labor. It was called “The Inducer” Funny right, someone from the gym found it a told me to try it. I was 38 weeks when I did the workout, so the baby was completely developed. Anyway, it was 7 rounds of 7 pullups and 7 wallballs at #12. The next day I went into labor, I really didn’t think it would actually work! I’d have to say working out my whole pregnancy helped me get through labor pretty easily.

What’s the most challenging part of being a mom and getting your workouts in?
The hardest thing would definitely be time management. I have to carve out time later in the day just to get to the gym. Between working full time, training and doing my other random jobs it does get a little overwhelming and frustrating. But, it is all worth it in the end. I love being a mom and my son is the best thing that has ever happened to me.

What piece of advice would you give other mothers who say they are too busy?
You are never too busy for your health. If you can find even 30 minutes to do some sort of physical activity it will help you tremendously.

How important is it for moms to lead by example in health and fitness, in your opinion?
Very important. It starts when you are little. The reason I am so active and eat healthy is because of my parents. You learn what’s around you. So, if you are surrounded by it, you live it. They way children eat when their growing is crucial. It can not only affect them physically but mentally, and also the way the act (attitude, and demeanor) Exercising and eating healthy is something you have to choose to live. It’s worth it.

Did you golf in Boise earlier this month?
I sure did. We were down there for the bodybuilding.com expo and a couple of us from Gaspari Nutrition golfed in a charity golf tournament for the Jayden DeLuca Foundation. We had ALOT of fun. Let’s just say I was a little rusty, but got into the groove of things after a couple holes. But, I think all of us need to stick to what were good at, and that doesn’t include golf!

What’s one thing you’ve yet to do that you’ve always want to?
Skydive

One thing that scares the hell out of you?
Watching Criminal Minds by myself in my house.

Anyone you’d like to thank?
Oh yes. I would love to thank Reebok. For all of the gear and letting me travel to all these places that I’ve never seen. Gaspari Nutrtion, for all of the new friends that I have made and products they let me try, and giving me chance! Atlas Power wraps, for giving me the best wraps possible to protect my wrists. Also, my parents who help so much with my son Cruz. I am lucky enough to go to all these great events, so I need someone to watch him. They are always there to help. I am truly blesse and thankful for all of the sponsorships and people I have in my life. I couldn’t do it without them.

MMA’s Ronda Rousey in ESPN Magazine’s BODY ISSUE

ESPN The Magazine will publish their fourth annual BODY ISSUE and we’re stoked that women’s mixed martial arts (MMA) will be represented by Ronda Rousey. It’s cool to see this come to fruition as our resident man on the hardbody scene, Isaac Hinds asked Ronda earlier this year if she would pose for the issue. She was a little taken back by the question of posing nude but said, “it would have to be tactful.” She went on to say if it was done by a reputable photographer and done in a classy way, then she’d be on board. Well, it sounds like things worked out as Ronda will be one of 27 athletes baring all of the issue that hits stands on July 13th.

Ronda has been taking the MMA world by storm and showcased a dominant performance in Columbus, Ohio earlier this year. Many felt (not us) Ronda was all talk but she quickly shut those critics up when she nearly snapped Miesha Tate’s arm in two and remained undefeated in her MMA career. She will defend her Strikeforce Bantamweight title against Sarah Kaufman on August 18, 2012.

Earlier today, Ronda wrote shared the ESPN Magazine news via twitter, “Hey so …. Espn body issue….. If anyone wants to see me “artistically nude” I suggest you grab a copy when it’s revealed on July 13th.”

Props to ESPN for selecting Ronda as the sole MMA representative (men and women). Congrats Ronda! We’re stoked to see your continued success in and out of the cage.

Nike and long-time advertising agency of record, Weiden+Kennedy are paying tribute to female athletes in their newest ad. The ad pays tribute to athletes who have overcome the challenges from simply being a woman. The ad features Joan Benoit Samuelson, 1984 Olympic Gold medalist (the first world’s first in a women’s marathon), WNBA stars Lisa Leslie and Diana Taurasi and Olympic Boxer Marlen Esparza.

IFBB Greater Gulf States Review & Results

Another IFBB show is in the books and two new champions were crowned. Tamee Marie in Women’s Physique and Brittany Tacy in Bikini were the two champs at the end of the night. The win earned Tacy a trip to the 2012 Bikini Olympia and Tamee Marie bragging rights.

The Bikini division was competitive despite no odds on favorite heading into the show. Brittany ultimately prevailed with an athletic physique and polished, without being over the top, presentation. The Floridian has steadily improved her placings since turning pro at the 2011 NPC USAs. If she continues to build her booty and works on being comfortable on stage she’ll be a top 10 contender at the Olympia this Fall. Stacey Alexander and Justine Munro tied for second but Justine won the tie breaker. Stacey had the more balanced physique and not many would have argued if she had finished in first or second. Justine has built one of the best booties in the biz but still finding her way with balancing her lower and upper body conditioning. Dayna Maleton landed in fourth and had one of the more muscular physiques in the show. She’s refined her presentation and finally seems at ease on stage. Narmin Assria secured the fifth place position, despite being the tiniest competitor on stage. She continues to add some muscle and fill out her frame. The normally poised and confident Assria, seemed a bit nervous with her prejudging posing. Jennifer Chapman slipped a bit in her placings however not many would have disagreed if she’d finished in the top spots. She brought one of her best looks to date and polished her posing. Summer White made her pro debut but it wasn’t her best showing. She’ll need to fill out her frame and not come in so lean if she hopes to make a name for herself in the pro ranks. A seventh place finish was a bit higher than expected and one she has to be thrilled with. Christie Marquez was probably the most poised and relaxed on stage and her 11th place finish wasn’t reflective of the presentation she brought to the stage. She definitely could have been higher and no one would argue with it.

The Women’s Physique competition wasn’t the best we’ve seen however there was a clear message sent. The judges are continuing to reward a physique with better shape/symmetry and not overly muscular. Tamee Marie competed in Figure as an amateur before switching to fitness where she ultimately turned pro. She looked far better in the morning than the night show and that earned her the top spot. Those in attendance had her any where from first to fourth. Karin Kimura entered her second pro show and finished in the runner-up position. Karin had a bit more muscle on her legs than some of the others but possessed great shape. If she can pose on her toes and less flat footed it could help with her presentation and elongating her legs. Jennifer Robinson finished in the third place position and many in attendance had her winning the show. She had the best shape in the show however a little more muscle and less separation than others. No one would have disputed her name being announced in the first place spot. Joele Smith has one of the best physiques in the division however she has a bit more muscle and not enough separation to move up for the judges. She’s one to watch at future shows. Gina Trochiano made her debut in the division and if she can bring a tighter backside she’ll move up at the Chicago show next week.

One thing that needs to be refined with Women’s Physique is the posing in the individual, prejudging rounds. Many of the women free pose and failed to hit the various mandatory poses. That’s what the finals are for to do the free-form posing. Would love to see the prejudging become just hitting the mandatory poses and keep the free form posing out of that round. It would give the judges an opportunity to see the physiques better.

Thanks to the promoters, Luke and Robyn for the hospitality and putting on a great show. The NPC portion had over 250 competitors and the night show was a sell-out. There were times when it was standing room only. This is definitely one show to put on your schedule to attend or compete in for 2013. It will be held on the same weekend next year.

IFBB Greater Gulf Championships Preview

The women of the IFBB are on stage once again and this time it’s in Metaire, Louisiana. The competition on stage will surpass the scorching temps outside and for y’all wondering – that’s hot. Nearly 250 NPC competitors will also take the stage at NPC Greater Gulf States, a National Qualifier since 1983. Take a look at the Hardbody breakdown of this weekend’s IFBB Bikini & Women’s Physique competition.

The HARDBODY 411:

BIKINI BREAKDOWN
1. Stacey Alexander Stacey will return to the Nawlins show once again, only this time as a pro. Stacey took home top honors as a NPC Bikini competitor and will look to repeat as an IFBB pro. She’s the only woman in the line-up qualified for the Olympia however she’s been beaten by a couple of women in this line-up since her Phoenix Pro win. This is her third pro show and will look to finish in the top spots once again.

2. Jessica Arevalo This will be Jessica’s second pro show since achieving the title of IFBB Pro at the 2011 NPC Nationals.  Jessica finished 8th at a very competitive New York Pro last month and should move up from that finish here.

3. Narmin Assria Narmin might be the smallest competitor on stage but don’t let her pint size stature fool you. She’s the mighty mouse of the Bikini division and is looking to head to her first Olympia. She’s in the mix with the new Olympia Qualification Series but a pro win is what every competitor is after. Narmin has the potential to do so and should be in the mix once again here. She’s coming off a third place finish at the Muscle Contest Pro.

4. Jennifer Chapman Jennifer will look to continue her hot streak this weekend. She’s coming off a second place finish at the Toronto Pro and has yet to finish out of the top three this year. Jennifer leads the Olympia qualification series, so even if she doesn’t win the show she could secure more points for an Olympia invite.

5. Christy Cook If the name throws you off, don’t worry it did us too. Prior to this year, she competed as Christy Merritt. Christy burst onto the scene when she took home the 2011 NPC JR USA overall crown. She followed it up with a second place finish in her pro debut and earned and Olympia spot. Since then, she’s struggled to find the top five. This will be her first time on stage this year and with a switch in training camps she’ll be bringing a new look to the stage. We’ll see if the changes put her back in contention for the Olympia

6. Marisa Lee This Georgia peach has a great look. This will be her third pro show since achieve pro status at the 2011 Team Universe event. Marisa just needed to bring her quads down a bit to match her upper body. She was 8th at this year’s IFBB Pittsburgh Pro and will look to move back into the top 5. Marisa finished third at the 2011 Jacksonville Pro, her pro debut.

7. Dayna Maleton Dayna is coming off her highest finish as an IFBB Pro, 4th at the Toronto Super show. She found success in a relatively short time in the NPC ranks but struggled to find her groove in the pro ranks. Dayna’s biggest issue was her presentation but at the Toronto Pro that wasn’t an issue. Dayna has a rock’n physique with a bit more muscle than some but that shouldn’t hold her back from a strong showing here.

8. Christie Marquez Christie has been up and down in her pro placings and will look to crack the top five here. She’s placed 4th on two occasions and has her sights set on moving into the money spots this time out. If she can pose with poise and stay relaxed she has what it takes to do so. At this level of competition it comes down to little details and if she’s refined those she’ll be in the mix.

9. Justine Munro Justine is coming off a slightly disappointing finish in her homeland. She finished sixth at the Toronto pro, a placing that doesn’t reflect what she brought to the stage. If she brings the same presentation and physique to this stage she’ll be in the hunt for the win. Justine has one of the best booties in the game and if her legs are tight she’ll be top three without a doubt, at least on our score sheet.

10. Brittany Tacy Brittany might be one of the most underrated pros in the league today. She has a kick ass physique and one that can hang with the top women in the division. Brittany’s highest finish to date was 4th at the Titans Grand Prix. She’ll have her work cut out for her to match it but she certainly has the potential to surpass it.

11. Summer White Miss White will be making her IFBB Pro debut and will be the dark horse in this line up. She exudes sexiness on stage and if she can harness that and pose with confidence, she’ll be in the mix. Summer turned pro at the 2011 NPC Nationals and many had her winning the overall. Can she make a splash in the top spots her first time out? Don’t bet against it.

WOMEN PHYSIQUE BREAKDOWN

1. Tracy Bodner Tracy will return to the stage once again and will look to find her groove in the pro ranks. She took a step back at the St. Louis Pro show when she showed up way too light with her tan. If she comes in how she likes instead of playing a guessing game of what the judges want, she’ll fair better. Tracy is at her best when she’s confident as it shows on stage.

2. La’Drissa Bonivel La’Drissa turned pro at the 2011 NPC USA, a show that rewarded more muscular physiques. The division has shown that women resembling female bodybuilders tend to not fair well. That said, La’Drissa will need to have brought her muscularity down from what we saw in St. Louis if she hopes to crack a top spot here. This will be her third show and will look to improve upon the 9th place finish her last time out.

3. Gloria Faulls Gloria is coming off an 8th place finish at the Toronto Pro show (her pro debut) and should finish better here. She’ll need to watch not being overly vascular when she takes the stage but balance it with her legs tight. It’ll be a balancing act for this Jersey girl but one she should be able to do with the first time jitters out of the way.

4. Karin Kimura Karin will look to continue her winning streak in this her second pro show. Karin successfully made the switch to Physique from Figure and took home top honors at the 2011 NPC Nationals. She followed it up with a close win over Sara Hurrle at the Governor’s Cup in her pro debut. She’s the one to beat at this show however you never know how it will go with a different panel of judges. We got a sneak peek at her one day out and can say she has nothing to worry about, she’s done her homework and looks great.

5. Tamee Marie Tamee will be making her debut in the Women’s Physique division and it should suit her well. She faired well in the NPC ranks as a Figure competitor however turned pro as a Fitness competitor and has yet to find the top five. Tamee is a taller competitor and needs muscle on her frame to not look “stringy” or “skinny”. This division is a good fit for her structure and could be the one she does the best at. Look for her to be in the top call-out if she’s not too hard in her conditioning.

6. Jennifer Robinson Jennifer hasn’t finished out of the top five in over 2 years. She was a leading lady in the NPC Figure ranks and has successfully made the switch to the Women’s Physique division. If she has refined her posing and brings a similar look to that of the St. Louis Pro she’ll be in the hunt for her first win. Jennifer found success on this stage as an amateur figure competitor when she took top honors in 2010. Can she repeat her efforts as a pro? The magic 8-ball says things look promising.

7. Joele Smith Joele has a nice look and placed consistently in the top spots as a pro. Her highest finish was 4th at the Orlando Pro and look for her to be in the mix for a top three here. Joele turned pro at the 2011 NPC Nationals and will be one to watch in this line-up. Joele is coming off a fifth place finish at the New York Pro.

8. Mikaila Soto Mikaila has been to hell and back off stage. While she may not place as well as she likes, she shows that simply taking the stage can be rewarding. Last year, Mikaila suffered an asthma attack and was later diagnosed with pneumonia. She gained nearly 40 pounds due to the medication but proved that a powerful mind can overcome adversity. If she’s able to bring in a physique similar to her Figure days she’ll move up in her final placings.

9. Gina Trochiano – This will be Gina’s debut in the Women’s Physique Division. She fared well as a Figure competitor and made it to the Olympia in 2010. It will be interesting to see what look she brings to the stage in this new division. She could be the dark horse to shake things up in the top spots.

When asked where the must see action of New Orleans is at (besides the on-stage competition of course) Louisiana State Chairman and show promoter Luke L. Tesvich III shared this with us..

You must see Jackson Square, (since 1700’s), St. Louis Cathedral, (behind the Square, also since the 1700’s and the oldest Basilica in the U.S.) the Pontalba Apartments that run along both sides of the Square are the oldest apartment buildings in the U.S. (since the 1700’s) and have Cafe au Lait and Beignets at the corner across from the Square at Cafe du Monde… that is the heart of the French Quarter… within a 3 block radius of the Jackson Square is a multitude of shops, restaurants, Jazz bars, etc…etc.. and Bourbon Street!”

One Day, Two (world) Records – Another Day in the Pool for Jessica Long

Jessica Long has spent more time in a pool at age 20 than most will in their entire lifetime. She has the heart and passion many people only read about and never experience. Jessica is a 7x Paralympic Gold Medalist and en route to adding more gold to her basket in London. Yesterday, Jessica added two more accolades to her competitive swimming resume at the U.S. Paralympic Swimming Trials.

Jessica broke not one but two world records and that’s just the first day at the Bismark Aquatic Center. Wondering just how bad ass she is? The records she broke were previously held by who else? Her. She beat the world and American record set in the S8 400 free. Jessica then crushed her own record in the SB7 100 breast by just over 2 seconds.

She was born with fibular hemimelia, which in lamest terms means no fibula. In other words, picture your food connected to your knee and that’s what Jessica was faced with from day one. She was amputated at 18 months old but that didn’t stop her from accomplishing anything she put her mind to. Yesterday she reminded the world of that.

Jessica tweeted (@jessicaLong) “400 free! 🙂 here I go!” and two hours later shared, “World record! So happy!” She showed one of the reasons she’s a champion with a tweet prior to that when she shared, “Trials pool! Great job to everyone who swam this morning. Go USA!”

Long will be headed to her third games as part of the U.S. Paralympic team. She was the youngest member in 2004, at age 12, and won three gold medals. She returned to the Beijing Olympics (remember at just 16 years old) and won four golds. Oh ya and a silver and bronze along with it.

When I asked Jessica how this year’s games felt compared to her last she told me she was was going to have more fun and not put so much pressure on herself. She’s clearly having fun while doing what she loves.

Long has five more events before the Trials conclude on Saturday. The prelims begin at 9am and finals are at 5pm. The event is free to the public.

Jessica is A HARDBODY, inside and out. Learn more about the paralympics and follow Jessica on twitter has she continues to swim her heart out.

PRESS RELEASE: Labrada Nutrition Teams up with Wal-Mart to Fight Obesity

Lee Labrada is one of the few bodybuilders who has impacted millions of lives with his efforts away from the competitive stage. Lee is taking his supplement line to the masses and the Lean Body to Go! products will roll out next month at Wal-Mart. This will allow people to have access to healthier options, which is a step in the right direction to helping fight obesity.

PRESS RELEASE:
Labrada Nutrition Teams up with Wal-Mart to Fight Obesity

HOUSTON, June 11, 2012 /PRNewswire — Labrada Nutrition, a Houston-based sports supplement and nutrition company, is about to make an even greater impact on fighting America’s obesity epidemic. This month mega retailer Wal-Mart will begin offering select Labrada Nutrition Lean Body to Go! 14 oz. Ready-to-Drink Protein Shakes in several flavors, available nationwide. The full rollout of the Lean Body to Go! products will be completed July 3. The national offering of the shakes means approximately 14 million people* will have access to better nutrition at the Wal-Mart value price, daily. And the real buzz, at least from Labrada’s perspective, is the opportunity to work with the world’s largest retailer in such a powerful way.

Lee Labrada, CEO of Labrada Nutrition and best-selling author of The Lean Body Promise, says having the opportunity to work with Wal-Mart means potentially touching millions of new people every year. As the former Fitness Czar for the City of Houston, credited with helping the city shed its “fattest city” title, he is hopeful it could mean a positive dent in the most recent sobering statistics regarding the nation’s rising obesity epidemic.

“Recently, the American Journal of Preventative Medicine released a study predicting a 42 percent obesity rate by 2030,” says Labrada. “As a father, husband, businessman and athlete, this is deeply concerning to me, especially when the study only included adults, and the number is likely to increase when children are included. But I hope with larger distribution channels for great nutritious products, the door will open to more people giving a healthier lifestyle a try – and that it will stick.”

The secret to changing the obesity patterns in America will hinge on people making better lifestyle choices, and part of it is knowing how to read labels properly, researching what is in foods before consuming them, and overall, being better stewards of our own health.

“It’s not always easy to make wise food choices when you’re on the go,” says Labrada. “So Labrada products are a great alternative when whole foods are not available or when someone is looking to boost their protein intake to help support the muscles, weight loss, and metabolism. I’m certainly in favor of anything that helps people learn how to eat, space out their meals, and utilize responsible portion control.”

The nutritional breakdown of the Lean Body to Go! 14 oz. Ready-to-Drink Protein Shakes Wal-Mart will carry is superb: 25 grams of high quality protein, zero grams of sugar, lactose-free, and only 190 calories.

Labrada Nutrition products have won numerous taste and quality awards over the years and continues setting higher standards. Labrada continues to be on the forefront of new product development and remains active in community outreach. Currently all lines of Labrada Nutrition products are distributed nationally and internationally in health food stores, fitness centers and gyms and other fine retail outlets. They can be found on the Web at www.labrada.com.

IFBB Omaha Pro Figure Preview

This weekend the IFBB and NPC heads to Omaha, Nebraska and the competition will be just as hot as the temperatures outside. Ten Figure pros are slated to compete in this inaugural event. While it may not be the deepest line-up it will be a competitive one. Someone will leave the Big O with their first pro victory.

The HARDBODY 411:

1. Meredith Berthelson Meredith was 12th a few weeks ago at the Cal Pro but should fair a little better at this show. She looks good from the front however when she turns around is when her weaknesses are exposed. She’ll need to bring a tighter backside than the Cal to crack a top five spot here. Some of it comes from posing a bit better from the rear as well.

2. Rachel Cammon It’s been awhile since we last saw this Denver Nugget on stage. Rachel turned pro early in her competitive career at the 2008 NPC USAs. The USAs was her third show ever and won in her first national appearance. She quickly found out that the pros were a bit more challenging. She has yet to crack the top five but this could be her best chance to do so. Her challenge is being balanced on the upper body to lower and not looking too stringy and vascular. If she comes in full and her lower body is tight she’ll move into the mix.

3. Andrea Cantone Andrea could be the darkhorse to shake things up at this show. She has a pair of sixth place finishes as a pro. She achieved IFBB Pro status at last year’s NPC Nationals and will look to move into the top five here. I look for her to be compared for the top spots here.

4. Jessica Farrelly The Arizona cutie is coming off a 9th place finish at the Toronto Pro,  her IFBB Pro debut. She wasn’t quite tight enough but showed tremendous potential. Jessica has a young, healthy and youthful look with great shape. If she is a bit tighter with her conditioning she’ll be a contender here. Regardless of where she finishes at this show, keep your eye on her in the years ahead.

5. Candice Lewis Candice is also making the trip from Arizona and gunning for her first win. She took the NPC Jr. Nationals stage by storm just under a year ago, where she won the overall. Candice has incredible shape and a super tiny waist. Her biggest challenge to date has been keeping her legs down in comparison with her upper body. If she brought her legs down just a bit, look for her to be compared for the win. I see her being in the mix for the title and her first win.

6. Mona Muresan Mona will be competing in her third show in a row and continues to move up in her placings. She was 10th in New York and 6th last weekend at the Toronto Pro. Mona has yet to crack the top five in her pro career and this could be her best shot to do so. She’ll have a tough time cracking the top three here but don’t be shocked if she’s in the top five.

7. Anissa Payne This will be Anissa’s third pro show since turning entering the pro league. She continues to improve since her 2011 Team Universe win.  Anissa’s biggest challenge is coming in tight enough from the backside. If she can do that she’ll move up in the placings.

8. Eleni Plakitsi Elani will look to improve upon her New York Pro Figure finish. I like her look and should could fair well here. She carries more muscle than some of the others in this line up which could hurt her but we’ll have to see when they are compared. She’s a bit of a bubble girl in this line up and which side will she finish – top five or bottom of the pack? We’ll find out tomorrow.

9. Kim Sheppard Kim has a great physique and should fair well at this show. She continues to improve as a pro and look for this flight attendant to land in the top five. Look for her to be in the top call-out and compared for the win. She’s one of the few women who seems to get better with each show, let’s see if it holds true this weekend.

10. Alea Suarez Alea is the only woman in this lineup to compete at the Olympia and she’s looking to return to the big stage with a win here. Alea’s highest finish was 3rd at the 2011 Phoenix Pro. The physique she brings to the stage now looks nothing like the one we saw when she was in the Bikini division. Look for Alea to be in the top three and compared for the win.

The 2012 IFBB Toronto Pro Figure competition came down to a tie breaker between odds on favorite heading into the show Gen Strobo and long shot Rosalind Vanterpool. Rosalind had yet to crack the top five of an IFBB Pro Figure show while Strobo was the defending champion. In the end, Rosalind prevailed and will be making her first trip to the Figure Olympia stage.

Canada’s own Aleisha Hart edged out Catherina Holland and fellow Canadian Natalie Waples to take home third place. Aleisha brought a poised presentation to the stage and probably the most streamlined we’ve seen her to date. Cat Holland brought one of her best looks to the stage but it just wasn’t enough in the judges eyes this time around. Natalie Waples brought a tight physique to the stage and looked a bit small standing next to the Strobo and Vanterpool. She brought great shape and was fuller than she had been in California last week, which helped her move up a bit.

2012 Toronto Supershow Bodybuilding, Bikini, Physique, Fitness Results

The ladies took the stage on Friday to kick off the 2012 IFBB Toronto Pro. It was nearly a clean sweep in all the divisions but Pollianna Moss disrupted that in Bikini. Pollianna took top honors in her IFBB debut and a win that few saw coming. Lisa Giesbrecht was victorious in impressive fashion in the women’s bodybuilding division while Kim Tilden edged out fellow Canadian CeaAnna Kerr for her first win in the Women’s Physique division. Kim made the switch from Figure and it proved to be the right move. Jodi Boam successfully defended her title in the Fitness division but she had some stiff competition in the fitness round from Vanda Hadarean.

A complete report of each division will be posted soon. Check out complete results and for photos visit www.npcnewsonline.com.
