2013 IFBB Valenti Gold Cup Results & Olympia Points Update

The 2013 IFBB Valenti Gold Cup was the final opportunity for pro Bikini and Men’s Physique competitors to qualify for the Olympia. The Figure division has one more show before the field is set. The second year Sarasota show offered more prize money to the women than the men, which is a unique and welcome change from the norm. Erin Stern entered the show as the odds-on favorite to win and delivered. The two-time Figure Olympia champ won in unanimous fashion over a competitive field.

valenti-cup

Kamla Macko finished in second and rounding out the top three was Trinidad’s Candice John. Macko debuted at this show last year and held her own once again in her second pro season. Candice John has been up and down in her placings but she’s steadily improved over her last two shows. Kim Sheppard took home fourth place and fifth went to Agnese Russo. Agnese and Kim have both improved their physiques and posing over the course of this season.

The current Figure Olympia point standings with one show to have the top four women locked in. Mathmatically the four women in sixth could get in if they were to finish in fourth or higher at next week’s Tournament of Champions. Fourth place is 2 points, 3rd is three points and 2nd offers 4 points. If Victoria Adelus, Natalia Revajova Lenartova, Kim Sheppard or Candice John finish in the top four they will lock in the fifth spot. I’ve been told that Aleisha Hart does not plan to compete at this time.

The Bikini competition was one that had many people who follow the division watching very closely. There were a few scenarios that could help or bump women in the point standings and at when the dust settled it left Noemi Olah in the winner’s circle. Noemi was in the mix for the point series however she removed herself from the list by winning her second pro show. Noemi’s first victory came in her debut at the 2012 Detroit Pro. The Hungarian beauty has improved her physique and a welcome addition to the Olympia line-up. Florida’s own Brittany Tacy edged out Gigi Amurao by one point for the runner-up spot. Despite the second place finish, Brittany will not make it to the Olympia stage this year. Gigi however locked in enough points with her third place finish to compete at the Olympia next month. Newcomer Carolina Silva finished in fourth, her second top five finish in as many shows. Sarah LeBlanc followed up her top five finish at the St. Louis pro with the fifth place spot here.

FINAL OLYMPIA POINT SERIES STANDINGS:

2013 IFBB Nordic Pro Results

The 2013 Nordic Pro qualified two more women for the Figure and Bikini Olympia and help set the stage for the Point Series. Anna Virmajocki took top honors in Lahti, Finland and will head to Las Vegas for the Olympia. Second place finisher, Michelle Brannan was already qualified for the Olympia but was able to get some stage time in for the big show. She tied with Tawna Eubanks for second with 14 points but broke the tied breaker.

nordic-pro-results

Tawna Eubanks appears to be heading to the Olympia via the point series, although we can’t be 100% sure until the results of the Valenti Cup are in. Jessica Renee made and impression on the judges and finished at her best in fourth. She was just one point away from second with 15 points. Lacey DeLuca finished in fifth but the finish secured her spot at the Olympia via the point series. Lacey tops the list with fourteen points and will compete in the IFBB’s biggest show.

Kati Alander won her first pro show of her career and will now compete at the Figure Olympia. She actually tied with Ekaterina Gamagina with nine points. The remaining top five collect points for the Olympia series however it doesn’t appear any of them will secure enough points to head to Vegas via the point series. This competition showcased a number of different countries and competitors from around the globe.

2013 IFBB Valenti Gold Cup Pro Preview

The 2013 Valenti Gold Cup is in its second year. The Sarosta IFBB Pro event marks the last opportunity for many of these competitors to qualify for the Olympia in Las Vegas. Last year’s champion, Erin Stern will be back to defend her title and the Bikini division will be a competitive show to follow. The even will also play host to the Pro Men’s Physique division and a NPC competition.

valenti-cup

Erin Stern is the obvious one to beat. She’s the reining Figure Olympia Champion and took top honors at this show last year. It will be a good warm up show for her heading into her title defense in Vegas. It’s not to say this show will be a walk in the park. Last year, we saw Kamla Macko match up fairly well to Erin and will likely be compared to her again this year. Kamla’s biggest challenge is posing with confidence but not coming across as arrogant. She fixed her shoulder poses from the back earlier this year when she competed in Tampa but came across a bit smug in her posing. If she can convey confidence without appearing arrogant it will help her. Seems silly but if you’ve seen it in person you know what I mean. She has a good chance of being in the top spots once again. Kim Sheppard, Candice John and Bernita Stuckey have all been in the mix before and could once again. Heather Nappi switched from bikini to figure and it’s paying off well for her. Holly Beck also continues to improve and if she can come in full and not stringy she could be in the mix. Agnese Russo has potential and if she can hit her posing from the back and lift her shoulder up when she does, she’ll be up there.

I don’t see Erin losing this one and Macko coming in a solid second. Who can round out those coveted top five spots and secure Olympia points, we’ll see. If Bernita or Kim are able to finish in second they’d lock in an Olympia top five, with one show to go. Bernita could also tie for a spot if she finishes in third. Beyond that no one would move up high enough after this show and be in the Olympia Point Series top five. They’d then have to go to the Tournament of Champions and finish in the top five.

This is the last show to qualify for the Bikini Olympia. Gigi Amaurao sits in fifth place in the Olympia Point Series with 10. That’s a tie with Tawna Eubanks who is competing across the pond in Finland. Gigi’s biggest challenge is bringing her legs in small and tight enough. She wasn’t at her best in St. Louis and will need to tighten up a bit to be a contender in this line-up. Noemi Olah is currently in 4th place in the point standings and will need to have a strong showing here to stand in the top five. She’s improved her physique since last year and matches up well with this line-up. Yarisha from Puerto Rico has a great look and I would have placed her higher in Tampa, if she brings a similar look to the Sarasota stage she should be a top finisher. Sara LeBlanc finished in the top five last week in Sarasota and I wouldn’t be surprised if she does again here. She has a more athletic physique and it’s one that is a healthy, fit look. Stephanie Mahoe found success in her first pro show and will look to match it again. She’s been competing quite a bit this year and the big question will be how her body holds up after so many shows.

Brittany Tacy could be in the winner’s circle or she could be fighting for a top five spot. She was solid in St. Louis and wouldn’t have argued with her finishing as high as second there but she’ll need to be at her best to be in the mix once again. She too has an athletic physique and one that represents the division well. The x-factor will be Carolina Silva. She was second in her pro debut behind Courtney King. She’s a beautiful girl but was a bit softer than others when she competed in Tampa. I wouldn’t have placed her in second but I’m not a judge. I look for her to be in the top callout and for her to win this show she’ll need to be much tighter in her conditioning than in Tampa.

2013 IFBB Nordic Pro Championships Preview

This weekend in Lahti, Finland the IFBB pro figure and bikini competitors will hope to lock in their spot at next month’s Olympia. This is the last chance for the Bikini pros to head to Vegas and the next to last stop for the Figure Pros. The Figure competitors last stop will be the Tournament of Champions next week.

finland-pro

The Figure line-up will be interesting to watch. There’s no “big name” competitor in the mix and the majority of the women are from outside the USA. There’s a variety of shapes and sizes in the group with some women being a bit more muscular than others. The winner will qualify for the Olympia and is the one spot that will make the biggest impact on the Olympia. The 2-5 place finishers will get points however none of the women in this line-up are in the hunt with the Olympia qualification series.

The Bikini competition is a bit more interesting to follow, at least in my opinion. Michelle Brannan is already qualified for the Olympia so the pressure is off her heading into this show. She’s one of the top bikini competitors in Europe so even though she’s already qualified don’t expect her to be anything less than her best.

Lacey DeLuca is tied for first in the point Series. If she places in the top five she’ll secure a spot in the Olympia. Even if she’s outside the top five, her 13 points should be enough to get in. Tawna Eubanks is tied for 5th in the point series with 10 points. If she places in the top four she’s in, fifth she might get in but no guarantee. Aly Veneno is tied for 7th in the point series. She was in the dreaded tied for 16th spot at last week’s St. Louis Pro and unless she had a miraculous change in her physique she’ll have a hard time cracking the top spots here. She needs to finish in the top four to have any chance of heading to the Olympia via the point series.

Jessica Renee has a good look and if she’s a tad tighter than last week could be a top contender however this line-up will be tough. Katie Chung Hua is one of the smaller competitors in the pro ranks in terms of muscle and will need to come in with a bigger booty and more muscle than we saw her last year. Amanda Otero is also in the deep waters with this line up and if she crack the top five it would be a win for her.

The dark horse in this mix is Anna Virmajoki. She’s a curvaceous blonde with a tight midsection but a bit more muscular legs than the other women in this line-up. She could be in the top three or the bottom of the pack depending what she presents on stage.

Don’t be surprised if the blondes take over this show and lock in your top three spots. Michelle, Tawna and Anna – the blonde trio would be my pre-show picks for the top spots. Anything can happen especially traveling overseas and in front of different judges.

Controversial “Wonder Woman Makeover” for NPC Bikini Competitor Veronica Matlock

Just when you think you’ve heard and seen it all… Nope. Chalk this one up to the whacky and weird. Veronica Matlock is a NPC Bikini competitor currently residing in California. She’s trained by IFBB Bikini Pro Michele D’Angona and part of “Team Sass”. Veronica placed outside of the top 10 at the 2012 NPC Titans Grand Prix but nothing too unusual about all of this. That is until you see the headlines Veronica and her husband David have been making lately.

wonder-woman-surgery

Take a look at just a few of the headlines from various websites.

• glamour.com – How Romantic?? The Plastic Surgeon Who Created His “Perfect Wife”

• dailymail.co.uk Plastic surgeon creates ‘perfect wife’ with ‘Wonder Woman Makeover’ – then asks her to marry him on first date

• Gawker.com – Meet The Plastic Surgeon Who Sculpted Himself the ‘Perfect Wife’

• odditycentral.com – Plastic Surgeon Uses His Skills to “Sculpt” the Perfect Wife

• scallywagandvagabond.com Plastic surgeon, Dr David Matlock creates perfect wife Wonder Woman makeover

• mirror.co.uk – Plastic surgeon creates “ideal wife” with Wonder Woman Makeover

Veronica met Dr. David Matlock when she came to him for a vaginal rejuvenation surgery after having her daughter. He suggested a “Wonder Woman Makeover,” which included a Brazilian butt lift, liposuction of the chin, the arms, thighs and more. She agreed to his suggestions but that was just the start of their tale. The famous plastic surgeon wasn’t shy about asking her out and proposed on their first date.

Sadly, the daughter in the video seems to make the most sense. We say to each their own and it’s your body but where’s the line? That’s for you to decide. Join the discussion on our facebook page and share your thoughts.

MuscleMag, Oxygen & Clean Eating Magazines Under New Ownership? An Update on Canusa – Robert Kennedy Publishing

In June, we shared the unfortunate news of popular female fitness magazine, Oxygen shutting down its Canadian and U.S. operations. A week later, Tosca Reno broke her silence and confirmed the news. Tosca took over  Robert Kennedy Publishing when Robert (Bob) passed away. Tosca had been married to Bob for eight years before his death in April 2012.

robert-kennedy-publishing
On her blog Tosca shared, “Canusa, parent company of Robert Kennedy Publishing which produced magazines Muscle Mag International, Reps!, Oxygen, American Curves and Clean Eating as well as hundreds of books (New York Times best sellers: Hardcore Bodybuilding, Reps!, RockHard!, Beef It!, Pumping Up! and the Eat-Clean Diet Series) has ceased business operations by officially closing its doors last Friday.”

Many subscribers and readers have emailed us voicing their frustrations over the closure of the magazine. Despite what appeared to be a sudden collapse of the health & fitness publishing powerhouse it was a long time in the making. We’ve recently learned that the sale of Canusa has been approved but what does that mean for fans of Oxygen and the other magazines?

Let’s back up a bit and go over some details that surfaced since June. The following information was gathered in part from preliminary reports posted on Deloitte & Touche’s website. Deloitte and Touche Inc. was appointed  the Trustee of the bankrupt estate.

BACKGROUND – CANUSA Products Inc. (Company)
Canusa Products Inc. operated as a magazine and book publisher. Canusa was incorporated in 1999 and conducted business as Robert Kennedy Publishing. One very important detail that many people (us included) were unaware of until recently was that Robert Kennedy Publishing is a separate legal entity from Robert Kennedy Publishing Inc. Robert Kennedy Publishing Inc. changed its name to Tosca Reno Media Inc. and was not in bankruptcy.

There were five magazine titles published by Canusa. They were American Curves, Clean Eating, MuscleMag International, Oxygen and Reps. Along with the magazine titles there were 52 active titles in the book publishing division of the Canusa. Things get a bit more confusing when it comes to the intellectual property and who owns what like the trademarks, copyrights, etc.

Despite Canusa being the publisher of the five magazines it did not own all the intellectual property related to the magazines. There were different trademarks for different countries and some were held in the estate of Robert Kennedy but others were not. Some of the trademarks appear to be held by Tosca Reno Medica Inc. which would avoid bankruptcy and their assets would not be part of the bankruptcy. The subscriber lists were property of Canusa however not all international licenses were held by the Company.

Deloitte & Touche Inc. (Trustee) was appointed the trustee of Canusa after its sole director Tosca Kennedy (Reno) filed for bankruptcy. Keep in mind it was just for Canusa. Deloitte & Touche, Inc. decided to sell the assets of Canusa and discontinue the publishing business.

There were numerous reasons mentioned as to why Canusa (Company) struggled and was forced into bankruptcy.

• the illness and death of the Company’s founder, Robert Kennedy, in April 2012, and the resulting impact that this has had on the Company;
• unfavourable industry trends for printed magazines;
• the cost of a settlement dispute in early 2013 with a significant advertiser;
• lower than expected renewals of subscriptions due to difficult transition to a new subscription service provider in early 2013;
• costs relating to the closure or a retail venture for MuscleMag International brand;
• commitment to a significant lease for a large distribution centre in Mississauga, which was significantly in excess of current corporate needs; and
• significant distributions to Robert and Tosca Kennedy relative to recent cash-flow and profitability.

In regards to the book division, the Trustee faces many challenges in selling this part of the Company. There are many constraints due to authors, copyrights, royalties and more.

The company was shelling out around $75,000 a month in rent. Yes, read that number again. 75k per MONTH.

At the time of closure there were 96 employees at the company. The employees were informed that the company was closing by the Trustee on Friday June 7, 2013. The locks were changed on the property and the computer systems blocked everyone out as well. Employees were left wondering if they’d see any severance and why they were blind-sided by the news despite warning signs along the way.

The printer and distributor were owed approximately $2.3 million and the paper supplier claimed to be out nearly $950,000. The subscription service provider claimed they were owed $151,000. It’s noted that approximately 218,000 parties prepaid for their digital or magazine subscription which could be a liability of over $2 million dollars.

The Trustee held an auction on July 23, 2013 where all of the physical assets were auctioned off. Items such as furniture, gym equipment, magazines, etc were placed on the auction block in an attempt to recover some much needed money.

According to mastheadonline.com this is how the asset sale breaks down. Note the copyrights, licenses, domain names and number of print and digital subscriptions that are listed for each title. Some of the subscription numbers are surprising.

The purchase price and what exactly was included in the assets were not disclosed.

Who is Cruz Bay Publishing, Inc?
According to Business Week’s website, Cruz Bay Publishing, Inc. operates as a subsidiary of Active Interest Media, Inc. and is based out of El Segundo, California.

So who is Active Interest Media, Inc. would be the next questions, right?

Active Interest Media (AIM) publishes a number of magazines and has five publishing groups — the Equine Network, the Home Buyer Group, the Healthy Living Group, the Marine Group, and the Outdoor Group. Healthy Living and Outdoor are the two groups under AIM that are in line the most with Canusa’s titles. Under the Health Living Group their current magazine titles include Amazing Wellness, Better Nutrition, Black Belt, The Box, Muscle & Performance, Vegetarian Times and Yoga Journal. AIM’s Outdoor Group includes Backpacker, Climbing, National Park Trips, NASTAR, Skin, Skiing, Snews and Warren Miller.

Only time will tell what will come of the Canusa titles however we’ve been told by numerous sources that there are plans for the titles to return.  Until we receive concrete evidence, it’s purely speculation however we wish the best for all who are involved. We’ll keep you posted .

2013 IFBB Tahoe Figure Pro Results

We’re one weekend closer to the Olympia and with that comes to a close a chapter in the IFBB Figure Books. Mallory Haldeman was the one to beat heading into the Tahoe Pro and despite a valiant effort by 20 other women she came out victorious. This marks Mallory’s second win in a row and she takes that momentum with her into the Olympia. Unless Mallory decides to do the Valenti Cup or the Tournament of Champions that is. The smart move, in my opinion, would be taking the two wins into the big dance with a month of rest and take a shot at the top spots.

Allison Frahn continues to chip away at an Olympia spot and positions herself well with the second place finish here. Victoria Adelus has been on a hot streak finishing with back to back top five placings. Latorya Watts wasted no time getting into the mix after her overall NPC USA win in July and locked her her best finish in Tahoe with fourth. Rounding out the top five was Julie Mayer-Hyman. Julie was second last week in Dallas but slipped to fifth here.

IFBB St. Louis Pro Bikini Results – Justine Munro Successfully Defends Her Crown

Canada’s blonde bombshell, Justine Munro was the only IFBB Bikini Pro qualified for the Olympia heading into the St. Louis Pro. She reminded everyone why on Saturday night as the defending champ retained her title. Justine brought a tight and toned physique & presented it with class. She was not only the unanimous winner on the judges’ scorecard but also to those in attendance. Justine takes a win into the Bikini Olympia where she could crack the top six if she brings a similar look.

2013 IFBB St. Louis Pro Bikini – Hardbody Prejudging Report

Twenty-eight women took the stage today in St. Louis, Missouri in hopes of qualifying for next month’s Olympia and bragging rights as the St. Louis Pro Bikini Champion. Last year’s winner, Justine Munro was back to defend her title after when the dust settled after prejudging, I’d say she’s the clear winner and will successfully defend her crown.

stl-pro-prejudging

Justine was the only woman in this line-up already qualified for the Olympia. When she took the stage she rocked it with confidence and a tight, toned physique. She wasn’t quite as muscular or conditioned as last year however she more than held her own, especially when she turns around. Justine has developed some of the finest glutes in the game and I’d be shocked if she’s anything but first at tonight’s finals.

Based on the comparisons the battle for 2-6th will be one that’s not a unanimous one. In the first callout you had Justine Munro, Brittany Tacy, Sarah LeBlanc, Lacey Deluca, Jessica Arevalo and Tiffany Bodyston. Based on this callout and they were brought back out for one more look at the end of all the comparisons, I’d say Sarah LeBlanc and Brittany Tacy will be your second and third place finishers. Sarah and Brittany both have athletic physiques. I like Sarah’s upper body as it’s one with some muscle and abs but not too overpowering. She could bring up her quads a bit though. Brittany also has an athletic physique and if she was just a tad tighter in the lower body she might be a challenge for the win. Lacey Deluca has her presentation down and has brought a healthier, more balanced look to the stage as of late. She has wide hips and a tiny waist. When she doesn’t hit her backside pose her booty looks a bit softer and bigger than when she is in her pose. I have her sitting in fourth of fifth but if pressed to give a spot, I’d go fifth. Jessica Arevalo brought some confidence to the stage and was pretty balanced. I’m not a huge fan of the way she twists so dramatically when she poses and the back of her suit appears a bit small. I think she could lock down fourth or be as high as second. I’d put her in fourth if I was on the judging panel but as we all know, I’m not and these are just MY OPINIONS and not how the judges feel. Tiffany Boydston could be has high as second or as low as sixth. I’d have her in sixth and only because she was in this callout. I’m not a fan of the big, thick high platform in the front for the shoes which she was rock’n. Tiffany looked better here than she did in Cali however I feel like she’s a little too thin up top and her backside wasn’t as tight as the other women in this group. We’ll see where the judges place her tonight at the finals.

Rounding out the top spots look to be Crystal Green in seventh. I would have had no problem with her in the first callout, she just needs a bit darker tan. Noemi Olah wasn’t quite as full and sharp as she was in Tampa however she should lock in the 8th place spot. Jessica Renee is some where in the top 10 spots and I’d have her in 9th based on the callouts. I’d like to see her with a bit more natural makeup as she’s a beautiful woman who doesn’t need to over due it with the makeup, a bit darker tan will help her as well. Christie Marquez’s color was a little off and her suit bottoms looked like they were going to fall down at any time. The cut was just way too low and didn’t flatter her physique which was the leanest I’ve seen her look. Stephanie Mahoe could be in the top ten but I have her in 11th based on the callouts. She wasn’t quite as sharp as she was in Tampa and her lower body could be a bit tighter. Gigi Amurao was plagued by the same problem she always has… her legs appeared too big and it cost her a higher spot here.

Diana Becker was back on stage and her upper body looked good. She just needs to bring her legs down and come in a bit tighter in her lower body and she’ll be back in the mix for a top spot. Hunnika is somewhere in the top 15 in her pro debut and I would have her higher as she didn’t look bad just small compared to some of the other women. Katherine Williams I thought also looked good and could have been higher but will be some where in the 15-17th spot. Jennifer Dawn could have been a tad tighter in the booty and needs a bit more size to her quads but overall I didn’t think it was a bad look for her she is somewhere around 15-17 as well. Amy Allen was clearly not at her best and it showed. Her lower body was flat and not what we’ve come to expect from her given what’s she presented in her last couple of showings.

2013 IFBB St. Louis Pro Bikini Preview

The Olympia is quickly approaching and that means there are only a handful of shows left for IFBB Pros to qualify for the event. The ultimate stage is the Olympia and you have to win a show to get there or finish in the top five in the Olympia Point Series. There are a number of women in this show who are in the hunt for an Olympia spot through the point series.

st-louis-pro-bikini

As you can see the points are all very close and only the top five will head to Vegas next month. Leading the point total is Lacey Deluca with 13 points. Noemi Olah is a close second with 11 and from there it gets even closer. Jessica Arevalo and Gig Amurao are both in the top spots with 10 points. Currently on the outside looking in is Tiffany Boydston and Aly Veneno. If they finish in the top five the could get in but keep in mind there are still more shows left after this one. Christie Marquez could get into the top five mix if she lands in the top four.

OLYMPIA POINT STANDINGS:
1. Lacey DeLuca – 13
2. Noemi Olah – 11
3. Jessica Arevalo – 10
3. Gigi Amurao – 10
3. Tawna Eubanks – 10
6. Tiffany Marie Boydston – 9
6. Aly Veneno – 9
8. Jessica Paxson – 8
8. Christie Marquez – 8

This is a VERY competitive line-up and the top five could go to a number of competitors. It all depends on who shows up at their best and who stands next to who. One thing I hope we don’t see is tacky posing. There’s no need for it at this level and in my opinion if you pose without class you should be knocked down no matter how good your physique might look.

Justine Munro is back to defend her title and she wowed everyone last year at this show with one of the best backsides in the biz. If she brings a similar look this year she’ll defend her title. Noemi Olah was on the outside of the top five in Tampa but she has a look that is appealing for the division. If I’m a judge, and let’s be clear I’m not, she’s in my top call-out if she looks like she did in Tampa. Sarah LeBlanc has a good bikini body and if she can pose with positive energy and a smile, she’ll catch the judges attention. When Jessica Renee shows up in condition she’s one who could move up into a higher spot. She has a good look but doesn’t always get in the mix as I think she could. Diana Becker (formerly Graham) is making a return to the stage and from the looks of things on her instagram account she means business. Diana could be in the top five without much argument if she’s in shape, which I believe she will. Brittany Tacy has a more athletic look to her physique and it’s one that’s appealing for the division. She wasn’t in the mix at the Orange County but she could be here. Amay Allen, Gigi and Jessica could be in the top five or fighting for a top ten spot and only because of how deep this line-up is.

The 2013 NPC USA overall champ Hunnika Villa will try her hand at the pro ranks and will get tested right out of the gate. This is one of the tougher shows of the year. I like Anna Starodubtseva’s look and if she’s a bit tighter in the lower half she could be in the hunt with her unique look. Kristal Martin will return to the stage and as one of the taller competitors her biggest challenge will be who she stands next to. She will tower over some of the women in this line-up however if she’s conditioned she’ll hold her own. Tiffany Bodyston and Aly Veneno are both in the mix for points but they’ll have a tough time finishing in the top five with this group of women. Sandi Forsythe and Crystal Green have good physiques but the little details like presentation and tanning have held them back in the past, we’ll see if they can nail it this time.

Lacey Deluca could be the x-factor in this show. Since she’s changed up her training she’s come in a bit tighter. She genetically has larger legs and a rounder rump than others in this show. If she comes in tighter and smaller in the lower half than some of her previous shows she’ll be in the top spots.

The judges will have their work cut out for them as there is no clear cut top five and will all depend who is at their best come Saturday’s prejudging. This year’s line-up is more than doubled that of last years. The show is held in conjunction with the NPC Midwest Naturals.

2013 IFBB Tahoe Pro Figure Preview & Competitors’ List

Twenty-one IFBB Figure Pros have sent their contracts in to compete at the first IFBB Tahoe Pro Women’s Figure event. The show will be held in Lake Tahoe, Nevada on August 24, 2013. This is one of the few remaining shows where the women can qualify for the Figure Olympia. The winner heads to the big dance, the top four earn points in the Olympia Point Series. The five women with the most points before the Olympia, will get invites to the show.

tahoe-pro

Olympia Point Series
Allison Frahn is in the mix with 9 points and tied for foruth. Kimberly Sheppard could get into the hunt as she sits in 8th with five points. Wendy Fortino, Candice John, Julie Mayer-Hyman and Victoria Adelus all have four points and could make a run at the point series if they finish in the top three. It will be interesting to see how these women fair and if they gain points towards the Olympia.

CURRENT POINT STANDINGS
1. Natalie Waples – 13
1. Swann Cardot – 13
3. Kamla Macko – 12
4. Aleisha Hart – 9
4. Allison Frahn – 9
6. Kati Alander – 6
6. Bernita Stuckey – 6
8. Ava Cowan – 5
8. Kimberly Sheppard – 5
10. Natalia Revajova – 4
10. Teresa Anthony – 4
10. Wendy Fortino – 4
10. Candice John – 4
10. Linda Andrew – 4
10. Julie Mayer-Hyman – 4
10. Victoria Adelus – 4

If you were to gamble on who might be in the top three it would be smart to roll the dice on Mallory Haldeman, Allison Frahn and Julie Mayer-Hyman. Mallory won the Tampa Pro earlier this month and if she’s able to present her physique in a calm, relaxed manner she could lock in another win. She wasn’t 100% in Tampa but showed definitely improvement in her back and her posing. At the night show her hair/makeup was much better than prejudging and she seemed more relaxed. If she can duplicate her night showing, she’ll be in the mix. Allison Frahn holds her own with this group and her biggest challenge comes in the wheels department and genetic structure. She has continued to improve her physique and could be in the hunt for a top spot here. Julie Mayer-Hyman wasn’t on many people’s radar heading into last week’s Dallas Europa but she held her own. She wasn’t quite as conditioned as the winner there and it cost her the victory. She’s had a week to tighten up and if she comes in a bit sharper with her conditioning than Dallas she’ll be in the mix for the win.

Victoria Adelus has her best showing last week in Dallas and if she brings a similar look she could be in the top five once again. Vicki Dowell is getting into the game after achieving pro status earlier this year and has a nice look. Candice John has been up and down in her placings and if she can bring tight physique to the stage she could be in the top spots. Essence Money has tons of potential but has yet to nail her conditioning needed to be in a top spot. She could move up if she brings a tighter physique than Dallas.

The x-factor here could be the 2013 NPC USA Figure champ, Latorya Watts. She has a super tiny waist but small hips so it can hold her back slightly when up against taller, more balanced competitors. She could be in the top spots though.

The 2013 Tahoe Pro Figure Competitors:
Victoria Adelus
Sasha Brown
Margarita Charaim
Kim Clark
Vicki Dowell
Brooke Erickson
Wendy Fortino
Allison Frahn
Mallory Haldeman
Carin Hawkins
Jessie Hilgenberg
Candice John
Simone Mack
Julie Mayer-Hyman
Essence Money
Inga Neverauskaite
Allesandra Pinheiro

Ad Watch: Nike “Just Do It” – Possibilities

Nike always seems to be on the front lines for all things cool. The newest Nike commercial celebrates the 25th Anniversary of their legendary tagline, “Just Do It” and it comes across more like a movie trailer than an ad. The 90-second spot seamlessly flows from one sport to another and showcases a mix of men and women throughout. Bradley Cooper narrates the spot although it wasn’t until I read that tidbit on Adage.com that I was able to pinpoint the voice.

possibilities-nike

The spot already has over 1 million views on Youtube and its only been up for a day. Nike describes “possibilities” as…
We’re all capable of a little more — a little faster, a little higher, a little stronger, a little more. And when we look at all of the little things we’ve done, we’ll see the big things we’re doing.

The music in the spot is the “Future Starts Slow” by The Kills. Pretty rad music to go with the ad. I dig it. What say you?

The Arnold Sports Festival continues to grow and entering its 26th year will gain a new presenting sponsor. The nation’s largest sports supplement distributor, Europa Sports will take over as presenting sponsor for the 2014 festival. NATION’S LARGEST SPORTS SUPPLEMENT DISTRIBUTOR TO TAKE OVER AS PRESENTING SPONSOR FOR THE 26th ARNOLD SPORTS FESTIVAL
Charlotte, August 22, 2013-EUROPA SPORTS PRODUCTS: The Arnold Sports Festival is getting a new presenting sponsor, but the sponsorship deal with Europa Sports Products is only one aspect of what is shaping up to be a history-making weekend for the 26th annual Arnold Sports Festival, which is consistently recognized as the largest multi-sport event in the nation.

As first-time presenting sponsor for the Arnold weekend, Europa Sports Products is the largest U.S. distributor of nutritional supplements, sports drinks and accessories.

The sponsorship agreement gives Europa new exposure and opportunities to introduce a breadth of products and nutritional knowledge to the 18,000 athletes and 175,000 fitness fans attending the four-day weekend event from more than 80 countries around the world.

Eric Hillman, CEO and Co-Founder of Europa Sports Products, states, “We’re thrilled to work with all the different players that make the Arnold Sports Festival the most iconic event in the fitness world. On behalf of the Arnold Sports Festival, “Jim Lorimer and Arnold Schwarzenegger express great pleasure in having Europa Sports Products as the Above-the-Line Presenting Sponsor of the 2014 Arnold Sports Festival, which will be the first and largest of its kind in the world.”

Europa Sports Products literally fuels the fitness industry and is largely recognized as one of the most prominent supporters of athletes and health-based businesses in the nation. Europa Sports Products partners with VisionStar, Inc. (Ed & Betty Pariso, Scott Templeton) in hosting its own four-city athletic extravaganza known as the Europa Games. In fact, the 2014 Europa Games winners for the Men’s Open Bodybuilding event being held in Orlando and Phoenix will be invited to compete at the Arnold Classic in 2015.

From Europa’s longstanding reputation to its industry experience in hosting mega-sized sporting events, the opportunity to be headlining the Arnold in 2014 is nothing short of a “classic” partnership for the fitness world.

In the coming months, Europa Sports Products will work closely with the Arnold Sports Festival to make this year one to remember. Adding to the excitement, Arnold Schwarzenegger recently announced that he is launching a new line of nutritional supplements that focus on performance, power and strength, nutrient support and recovery. Europa Sports will be the exclusive distributor for the Arnold Series product line currently in development with MusclePharm.

The Arnold Sports Festival is scheduled to take place February 27 – March 2, 2014 in Columbus, Ohio. In addition to debuting a new title sponsor, the Arnold Sports Festival has announced that the first-annual Arnold Classic 212 (212lb Men’s division) will be held in 2014. It just goes to show that even after building more than a quarter century of success in this industry, there’s always a way to make it even stronger.

2013 IFBB Dallas Europa Figure Pro Results & Review

The IFBB Figure women showed up in a big way for the 2013 Dallas Europa and it was a competitive event. This show is one of the last remaining stops on the IFBB Pro League schedule before the Olympia. The winner locks in her spot in the Olympia line-up. The top five finishers earn points towards the big show via the new Olympia Point Series.

Dana Ambrose brought her best look to date and it was enough to edge out Julie Mayer-Hyman by one point. Dana has better conditioning than Julie and ultimately that had to be the deciding factor in the win. Dana was her most confident to date and you could tell she was comfortable with the look she brought. Julie Mayer-Hyman wasn’t someone you’d have pegged as a top threat heading into the show but she stood out with her tremendous shape and symmetry. She just needed to be a tad tighter in her conditioning. If she heads to Tahoe she could be in the top spots there. Swann Cardot brought an improved physique from Tampa and it was enough to put her solidly in third. The third place finish also puts her in the points lead for the Olympia. Victoria Adelus continues to refine her physique from her Fitness days and the 4th place finish was a solid finish for her. Andrea Calhoun continues to hold her own in just her second pro show. She might only be 4’11” but her tiny waist and great balance keep her in the mix.

2014 IFBB Dallas Europa Women Physique Results & Review

The IFBB Europa Dallas was final stop on the IFBB Pro League schedule to qualify for the Olympia. Win and you’re in. Finish in the top five and you collect points towards the Olympia point series.

Fan favorite, Dana Linn Bailey lived up to and surpassed her popularity on stage en route to her first pro victory. She beat out a competitive field of women all looking to head to the Olympia. Jillian Reville bounced back from a less than stellar showing in Tampa a week ago to lock in the second place spot and earn enough points to head to the Olympia. Karin Hobbs also secured enough points to head to Vegas with her third place finish. Jennifer Robinson and Nicole Ball rounded out the top five spots in this final event before the Olympia. There are more IFBB Women’s Physique shows slated for after the Olympia which will qualify competitors for the 2014 event.

A Day of Dana Domination in Dallas

Dana Linn Bailey and Dana Ambrose dominated the 2013 IFBB Dallas Europa, both winning their first pro show. Dana Linn came into Dallas with a more conditioned physique than the week prior in Tampa. The look may have been a bit too much conditioning at other shows however in this line up she was victorious.

dana-linn-dana

If she brings a slightly less conditioned physique than Dallas and just a bit tighter one than Tampa, she will be a threat for the Olympia crown. Dana knows her body well and how to pose it in a flattering manner. She has large quads which from the front relaxed pose can throw her symmetry off a tad but every other pose she nails it. Round muscle bellies, healthy looking skin and relaxed posing helps put her into the winner’s circle. She’s definitely lived up to her off-stage hype and you have to give her mad props for the changes she’s done to her physique over the past year.

Dana Ambrose locked in her first pro win and she did so in convincing fashion. She was spot on with her conditioning and could have been a tad off with her tan however that may have also been the lighting. She’ll head to the Olympia for the first time and if she brings a similar physique and presentation to the Vegas stage she’ll hold her own. You can see the confidence in Dana improve with each show. This was definitely her best look to date and she beat out a competitive field of Figure competitors.

After five successful years, the loyal BodyPower following has grown accustomed to seeing amateur competitions featured within the UK’s number one fitness expo. For the sixth installment, BodyPower has taken it up a notch with the BodyPower Pro, taking center stage within the three-day fitness phenomena.

“Bodybuilding has always been big in the UK,” IFBB Professional League president Jim Manion said. “There has been a long history of great champions competing in England and next year the IFBB Pro League is proud to keep that tradition alive with the BodyPower Pro.”

The BodyPower Pro is set to feature an exciting and varied, three class line-up. Visitors can expect to see top names from the world of bodybuilding battling it out in the 212 class, figure, and for the first time ever in the UK, the pro wheelchair class.

The addition of the pro wheelchair class is a proud moment in the history of the expo. As an industry leader and the UK’s number one fitness expo, BodyPower is a strong advocate for ‘fitness for all’ and supports the notion that disability is no obstacle to achieving your goals.

BodyPower CEO, Nick Orton commented on the announcement: “The introduction of a pro show into the expo program is fantastic news for our visitors. The size of the show and its following has snowballed year on year, justifying the need to take the offering to the next level. The BodyPower Pro will certainly do that!”

Spectators can also expect an additional line-up of world renowned open competitors, who will take to the stage for a series of guest posings throughout the BodyPower Pro.

Prejudging will take place during the day of Friday, May 16 and will be accessible to the expo visitors. The finals of the eagerly anticipated BodyPower Pro will take place on the Saturday evening, an event that will be ticketed separately from the day’s expo.

2013 Dallas Europa Super Show Preview

The 2013 Dallas Europa marks one of the few remaining stops for the IFBB Pros. Nearly 100 men and women will take the stage this weekend in hopes of winning and heading to the prestigious Olympia. Those who don’t win but finish in the top five will be awarded points in the Olympia Point Series. The five with the most points in each division receive and invite to the Olympia as well. This is the last chance for the Women’s Physique division to qualify, so a great deal is riding on this show. The Figure women still have a few more chances to qualify however every point counts.

Tammy Jones Wins 2013 Tampa Pro Bodybuilding

You’d never know the women’s bodybuilding division had a lack of support by the 2013 IFBB PBW Tampa Pro show. The IFBB Pro bodybuilding showed up in a big way and it was a highly competitive event. When the dust settled, Florida’s Tammy Jones left with the win. The judges scored her a unanimous victor over a slightly downsized but still shredded Rita Bello. Tonia Moore returned to the stage in impressive fashion with a third lace finish. Tina Chandler wasn’t quite as sharp as her Chicago appearance last month and finished in fourth. A polished Helle Nielson rounded out the top spots with a fifth place finish.

Haldeman Wins IFBB Tampa Pro Figure

Mallory Haldeman took home top honors on Saturday night at the IFBB Tampa Pro Figure contest. Despite it being a clear win on the judges’ scorecard it didn’t appear as such to many in attendance. Kamla Macko made a strong case for the win but was relegated to the runner-up position. Third place went to Allison Frahn who is in a tight race to qualify for the Olympia by the Point Series. Latorya Watts wasted no time entering the pro ranks. She was the 2013 NPC USA overall figure champ and finished in fourth her first time on a pro stage. Rounding out the top five was Swann Cardot. Swann is also in the mix to compete in the Olympia via the point series.

2013 Olympia Prize Money Reaches One Million Dollars

The 2013 Olympia continues to be the most anticipated event in bodybuilding and fitness. Event organizers shared an update to the prize money and it’s reached a whopping one million dollars. Previously we shared that the Olympia total purse had been increased to nearly one million but now it’s reached the milestone. The additions come to the men’s bodybuilding events and both the men and women’s physique divisions. Exciting news for the women who will be competing in the inaugural Women’s Physique Showdown.

OLYMPIA WEEKEND: ONE MILLION DOLLARS IN PRIZE MONEY!

Joe Weider’s Olympia Fitness and Performance Weekend has reached a milestone-correction, a million dollar milestone. Yes, bodybuilding’s biggest weekend has hit the $1,000,000 mark, making Olympia Weekend’s total prize money figure the richest in the industry-by a country mile! Check out the increases in total prize money per division: Mr. Olympia has jumped from $650,000 to $675,000; the Olympia 212 Showdown has grown from $40,000 to $65,000; and the inaugural Olympia Men’s and Women’s Physique Showdowns kick in $20,000 a piece, and those figures combined with the other divisions add up to one million dollars in total prize money.

For years, the goal was to reach one million dollars by the 50th anniversary of Olympia Weekend, which would have been 2014. But thanks to the hard work and combined efforts of American Media Inc. and its CEO and chairman David J. Pecker, the IFBB Professional League and its president Jim Manion, and title sponsor Ultimate Nutrition, presenting sponsor Bodybuilding.com, and other valued sponsors, Joe and Ben Weider’s lifelong dream has become reality-ahead of schedule. And let’s not forget the folks who really made this possible, the fans.

“Without the fans none of this would have happened,” Manion said. “Whether you’re a fan who attends year after year, a fan who can only make a special trip once in a while, or a first-time fan, it’s because of your support of the event and the sport, that Olympia Weekend has been getting bigger every year and I know that with all the exciting things happening in the industry, it will continue growing in the coming years. The sky’s the limit.”

Ultimate Nutrition presents the 2013 IFBB Joe Weider’s Olympia Fitness and Performance Weekend, brought to you by Bodybuilding.com, September 26-29 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Get your tickets now at www.mrolympia.com.

2013 IFBB Tampa Pro Competitor Lists: Record-Breaking Turnout

The 2013 IFBB PBW Tampa Pro is shaping up to be the largest IFBB Pro show of the year. The Olympia is right around the corner and many competitors are still looking to qualify. This weekend’s show is one of the few remaining events on the schedule before the big show. The winner will automatically receive a spot in the Olympia lineup and the second through fifth place finishers will earn points in the qualification series.

tampa-pro
The women have turned out in huge numbers for all the events and combined with the men it looks like this show will have over 200 IFBB pros competing. Promoter Tim Gardner always does a great job of taking care of the competitors and this year should be no different. We’ll be there covering the event and keep your posted throughout the weekend. There are many women making their IFBB debuts at this show and it will be interesting to see how they match up to the seasoned veterans.
