Interview with ‘Lone Survivor’ Actor Scott Elrod

The heroic film, Lone Survivor, opens in theaters nationwide on Friday, January 10th. The film is based on The New York Times bestselling book by Marcus Luttrell. The book in an eyewitness account of Operation Redwing and the lost heroes of Seal Team 10. The Navy SEALS were on a covert mission to neutralize a high-level al-Qaeda operative in the mountains of Afghanistan and were faced with a chilling moral decision. The film brings an unthinkable tale to life as best it could in two hours. Lone Survivor is directed by Peter Berg and has already received favorable reviews since its limited opening in December.

Scott Elrod Lone Survivor Actor

Scott Elrod has a part in the film and while he may not be one of the four main actors, you’d never know it by his experience. Scott was born in Germany, and as the case with many military families, moved around before settling in Colorado. Growing up around the military all his life helped him make the decision to enter the Air Force. Scott spent six years in the military before pursing other endeavors. If you’ve spent any time in the military or been around those who have, you know it’s a different world than “civilian life”. It’s something you have to experience to fully comprehend. Understanding and having an appreciation for the military life would later help Elrod land a role in Lone Survivor.

Years ago, a friend recommended the book Lone Survivor to Elrod and after reading it, he knew it would eventually end up on the big screen. Scott shares, “When I read the book I knew this was definitely going to be a movie. I knew immediately I wanted to be in this film.” Scott has played a variety of roles in his career but knew if the opportunity came up to be part of a moving military film, he’d be perfect for the job. While at a charity event, opportunity knocked and Scott opened the door. He was introduced to Peter Berg and the two immediately clicked. They discussed the project and Elrod says, “I made it clear to him that I wanted to be in this film.”

Later he’d get his wish, on his birthday none-the-less, when Berg told him he’d have a part in the film. A few months would pass before an offer was sent over, but once it was signed, sealed and delivered, it was full steam ahead. Scott plays a Navy SEAL who wished to not be named in the final credits.

scott premiereScott meeting a soldier at an early screening of the film.

It’s apparent this film is committed to being authentic and  respects not only those who lost their lives in the mission, but also the families involved. It pays close attention to every detail from the maneuvers to the mannerisms of the soldiers. Elrod mentions that Marcus was on set every day and it was clear that he and Peter had a great working relationship. When asked what it was like to work with Berg he says, “Peter is such a professional and has such a great team around him. It’s really a family. He’s done a great job of surrounding himself with people who are professional and he knows his craft.” As you’d expect, the movie is intense and Scott’s convinced the audience will see the pride and passion that went into making it.

The trailer and movie stills show the characters of the film with beards, not often a sight associated with military personnel. When asked about the beards, Elrod elaborates as to why the cast all had them. He shares, “the biggest thing with the SEALS… they aren’t standard, they don’t want any attention and when you’re in Afghanistan you have to blend in.”

The reoccurring sentiment that comes up with Scott, and with everyone else who talks about the film, is how fortunate they are to be part of it. “We have it easy compared to what these guys have to do as SEALs,” he says. When asked if he’s seen the film and if he’s happy with the end result Scott says, “I’ve seen it five times.” He goes on to share, “Pete did a really good job casting it, you can connect with these guys. We’ll never fully understand what they went through, but you’ll feel compassion for these four guys. You want to relate.”

The film serves has a harsh reminder that there are men and women fighting for our freedom. People die. Something we all need to reminded of at times.

Good Health = Wealth

Today’s Photo of the Day reminds us of bright, sunny days and summer. While it’s cold outside for most of us it doesn’t mean that we should be cold on the inside.

Remember to focus on your health by knowing yourself. Featured model is Elspeth Katherine. She shares this on her Facebook page… “Hi everyone! I have been a hair and makeup stylist for the past 6 years, and absolutely LOVE what I do! I am also a fitness enthusiast (to say the least!). I am a Team Dymatize Featured Athlete, ReebokONE, LeaseQ, & Fitmark bags Ambassador, an NPC Bikini Competitor, and Personal Trainer. I am constantly challenging myself to learn and do more, and taking every chance I can get to travel the world!”

Equinox Made Me Do It

This isn’t your typical spot for a gym. Take a look and see for yourself. “This year when you get into great shape, you might just get into some trouble.
#equinoxmademedoit”

equinox made me do it

It’s typical to see an influx in ads for weight-loss and gyms this time of year. People are focused on getting back in shape and hitting the gym as part of their New Year’s Resolutions. This ad from Equinox suggests that if you work out you’ll do risky, crazy things you might not have if you weren’t in shape. It’s an interesting take on getting into shape.

P&G Thank You Mom – Raising an Olympian: Amy Purdy

“Love life. Have confidence in yourself.” Simple advice but convincingly true. Those word of wisdom were what what Amy Purdy’s mother shared with her. Amy is a paralympic snowboarder and the feature of this moving video. Proctor & Gamble does a great job with their “Thank You Mom” campaign. You might remember this campaign from the Summer Olympics. It’s one that never gets old and helps to tell the story of not only athletes but also their moms.

amy-purdy

Amy shared this on Facebook after seeing the video, “Wow this turned out amazing and brought me to tears! ‪#‎thankyoumom‬ for being so loving and supportive all the wonderful things you shared in this video brought me to tears! This reminds me of how far I have come! I am who I am ‪#‎becauseofmymom‬.”

Thank You Mom – Winter Olympics

The Super Bowl tends to be the one time people pay attention to ads on tv but this spot by Proctor & Gamble will get your attention and it has nothing to do with American football. The 2014 Winter Olympics are less than a month away and P & G has put together an incredibly moving spot in honor of moms for the Sochi games. The ad shows young athletes taking steps towards their Olympics dreams but the focus isn’t on the athletes but rather the moms.

Thank You Mom

This “Thank You Mom” spot has a warm and fuzzy feeling to it despite it featuring cold, winter sports. The ad already has nearly 4 million views in the four days it’s been online. The spot is beautifully done by the creative agency Wieden + Kennedy out of Portland, Oregon.

For teaching us that falling only makes us stronger. For giving us the encouragement to try again. Thank you, Mom. Learn more about P&G Thank You, Mom at http://www.facebook.com/ThankYouMom.

Athletes Eat and Train, They Don’t Diet & Exercise

If you’re active and making an effort to be the best version of you, then we applaud you. One thing to think about with your approach to tackling those New Years’ resolutions is a shift in focus. Instead of looking at it as diet and exercise, tackle it like an athlete. Athletes eat and train, they don’t diet and exercise.

athletes eat and train, not diet and exercise

Your body is one thing you control. Determine what you’re training for and then eat accordingly. A marathon runner isn’t going to eat the same way as a powerlifter. Think about it. Change your mindset. A shift in your thinking and your approach will help motivate you year-round.

Bodybuilding.com Debuts Its E-Commerce Store in Brazil

Bodybuilding.com Debuts Its E-Commerce Store in Brazil With Sajan’s Localization and Internationalization Expertise
RIVER FALLS, WI–(Marketwired – Jan 7, 2014) – Sajan, Inc. (OTCQB: SAJA), a leading language services and technology provider, has been selected by Bodybuilding.com — the world’s largest online sports nutrition company and number one sports e-retailer — to strengthen the Fortune 500 company’s global presence. Sajan has helped launch Bodybuilding.com‘s e-commerce store for the Brazil market, the latest step in its global strategy.

bodybuilding-brazil

Before Sajan came on board, Bodybuilding.com took steps to internationalize their e-commerce site, but they faced technical challenges and needed assistance from a company with a depth of experience in the field. They evaluated several translation providers and selected Sajan primarily for its strong technical expertise.

Sajan’s localization engineering team provided that expertise and became an integral part of the extended Bodybuilding.com team, working closely with members of the delivery team to implement the required solution. Dealing with the Bodybuilding.com team’s highly structured and format-rich content called for a unique approach. This involved a pseudo-translation and internationalization testing phase to ensure that the site back-end fully supported the addition of new languages.

Sajan dedicated a translation team with deep knowledge of the Bodybuilding.com product line to work very closely with Bodybuilding.com’s in-country team to ensure appropriate product branding and messaging for the market.

In addition, Sajan streamlined the translation process with its translation management system, Sajan Transplicity, which offers automation capabilities that make managing the company’s global content faster and simpler. The solution has relieved much of the heavy lifting connected with localization.

“Without Sajan, I just wouldn’t have been able to go any farther into localization with the resources I had,” said Carrie Fischer, localization program manager at Bodybuilding.com. “From their deep technical ability to their efficiency-driven project management team, Sajan is a true solution provider that’s always looking for ways to improve the process.”

“We are extremely thrilled to be partnering with Bodybuilding.com on their exciting international expansion,” said Shannon Zimmerman, CEO of Sajan. “This is a prime example of how our talented localization engineering and project management teams shine in their respective roles. As we roll out more of this enterprise solution, we look forward to helping Bodybuilding.com achieve ever-greater global prominence.”

About Sajan

Olympic Gold Medalist Lindsey Vonn Out of Sochi

In a statement issued on Tuesday morning, Olympic Gold Medalist Lindsey Vonn announced she would not be competing in the Winter Olympics next month. She shared that she was “devastated” to make the announcement after trying to overcome a nagging knee injury.

Vonn shared, “I did everything I possibly could to somehow get strong enough to overcome having no ACL but the reality has sunk in that my knee is just too unstable to compete at this level.”

Lindsey ended her statement with, “On a positive note, this means there will be an additional spot so that one of my teammates can go for gold. Thank you all so much for all of the love and support. I will be cheering for all of the Olympians and especially team USA!”

Dina Al Sabah – Staying Healthy & Fit While Pregnant

Dina Al Sabah let the world know the news yesterday… She’s expecting! Dina posted a photo on Facebook and shared the news with everyone. She’s been kind enough to document her journey and share it here. Dina was one of the pioneers in the IFBB Women’s division. As an amateur, she competed in women’s bodybuilding, fitness and figure. After successfully petitioning for her pro card (since she wasn’t able to through her country at the time) she had a solid run as a Pro Figure competitor. She made the transition into the Bikini division and found herself in the top spots once again. Dina graced the cover of Oxygen, IRONMAN and other magazines along the way. If you think she’s just another attractive competitor/model, think again. She has a degree in Electrical Engineering and has probably forgotten more about computers than most people ever know. Dina decided to hang up her competition suit after a successful career.

Dina Al Sabah’s Pregnancy – The First 20 Weeks
Prior to pregnancy, I had very clear thoughts about how mine would be. Of course, I would stay on the same diet and only add the necessary calories; I would workout up till the very end, and I would not have to switch to maternity clothing until I was at least half way through. Needless to say, all those lofty thoughts went out the window pretty much the minute I saw that positive sign on a home pregnancy test. Clearly every pregnancy journey is unique and is dependent on each individual’s circumstances. In my case, in order to optimize my body for pregnancy I had to be mindful of not exercising too much or eating too little. As a former competitor, I would always be anxious if I could not see my abs in the morning; however, having low body fat was not going to be conducive to getting pregnant. The months prior to getting pregnant I ate more and did less cardio allowing my body to settle in at about 132 lbs.

The first few months of pregnancy were miserable. I had low grade nausea throughout the day that peaked at night. Most foods I used to enjoy like chicken and steak ended up making me gag. I couldn’t even stand to watch my husband eat meat. My go to foods were noodle and vegetable soup, eggs, crackers…and more crackers. The nausea was always worse if I let myself get hungry, so I put myself on a 3 hr. eating schedule. Most of the reading I did stated that protein would help keep the nausea at bay, but the only things that I could tolerate were starches. Other than feeling crabby, I was also not allowed to work out until I was about 12 weeks along. My OB was extra cautious due to my “advanced maternal age” and preferred that when I started back up in the gym that I keep my heart rate under 135 and that I avoid overheating. He recommended swimming as the best form of cardio while pregnant.

I invested in a Mio Alpha watch to keep track of my heart rate as the Polar chest strap was just not working for me. At my first gym session, I noticed that my heart rate was much higher than it was usually. Just walking on the treadmill was giving me a heart rate in the 120’s, so I literally had to stroll very leisurely. Upon further investigation, I found out that this increase is very normal, and it is, in fact, one of the first signs that some women pick up on when they are pregnant. At about 13 weeks, I resumed my weight training activities. I cut back on all my weights by 50% and started off with a lower body/upper body split. Once I felt better, I returned to my regular workouts albeit at a much lower intensity. At the end of the day, the most important thing is to have a healthy baby, enjoy my pregnancy and not overdo it in the gym. I applaud women who are pregnant and box jumping, crossfitting, running etc.; I am assuming they are doing it with the blessing of their OB. I, on the other hand, feel that I can go back to those activities once I give birth.

Weeks 9-13
I started taking weekly “belly” shots to see how things were changing. To the average person, I most likely look a little bloated, but I do notice a difference. I also notice that I am starting to have some water retention and that my jeans are very snug especially towards the end of the day. Nausea still rears its ugly head every so often, but I have only thrown up twice. At 13 weeks, after my NT scan and first trimester screening, I felt well enough to start some activity. I have been very anxious since the beginning as I have had the unfortunate experiences of miscarriage and thoughts of doom and gloom are always lurking.

Weeks 14-17
Thankfully the nausea has abated, but I still cannot stomach eating much protein. My coach, Layne Norton, suggested using pasteurized egg whites in smoothies which I actually enjoy. I moved to a 5 day split (back/chest, legs part 1, bi/tri, shoulders, legs part 2) and about 15-20 minutes of steady state cardio at week 16. My usual cardio is incline treadmill, elliptical and sometimes the stepmill. My goal has been to keep my heart rate in the 120s. When I lift, my heart rate does go into the high 130s, but I make sure to give myself enough rest for it to go back down. If I lived in a walking city I would choose to walk everywhere, but Los Angeles makes that a little difficult so indoor cardio will have to do.

Week 18
This week I got some lower back pain which can be one of the unfortunate symptoms of pregnancy, so I have taken it easy and skipped the gym. I have implemented a nightly stretching and rolling routine. I do a series of neck stretches and some sun salutations. I also use a Rumble Roller and Beasties on my back, shoulders and neck. I look forward to my bi-weekly pre-natal massages.

I haven’t had any cravings; however, my aversions are still there. I am able to eat ground meat, but anything else does not sound appealing at all. I usually start off the day with a Muscle Egg shake. I throw in either a half banana or berries depending on my mood, and about 1/4c of Fage 2%. I have also been addicted to Fitness Bread; something about its chewiness just makes me salivate. I usually have a slice with breakfast, and sometimes as a snack. The great news is that I am still not interested in sweets!

Week 19
My back feels better, so I’m back in the gym yay!

For my workouts I did:

Back (10 -12 reps, 3 sets): seated row, high pull, dumbbell row plus 15 minutes on treadmill

Shoulders (10 -12 reps, 3 sets): lateral raises with hold at top, upright rows, front raises plus 15 minutes on stepmill

Arms and mini legs (10 -12 reps, 3 sets): preacher curls, flat curls, rope pull downs, pushups, standing lunges, glute bridges using the stability ball, Bosu body weight squats plus 20 minutes on elliptical.

I really wanted to get to the gym one more day, but my husband was feeling a bit under the weather, so I stayed home since he would feel bad that I snuck in an extra workout without him… yes men are silly!

I am forcing myself to drink lots and lots of water. I found a wonderful water pitcher with an infuser so I am making all sorts of flavored water. My current favorite is cucumber mint. Last week I experimented with lavender and lemon which was very tasty.

Week 20
Happy New Year Everyone!

We are off to Germany tomorrow for a few days. I have already been instructed by my OB to walk every hour, drink plenty of water and wear some over the counter compression stockings. Last night I tried out the very sexy compression stockings. While they were surprisingly comfy, the stockings are hideous. Thankfully I am flying in a cabin with a flat bed seat so at the very least I can get some sleep, but my goal is to drink enough water so that I HAVE to get up every hour, that way there is no slacking off. I had a decent leg workout today but kept it super light as I do not want to be sore tomorrow!

Leg extensions, box squats, cable kick backs, straight leg deads, plié squats.

I will check in with you next week when I return.

If you have questions related to Dina’s pregnancy and what her journey has been like post them in the comments below or email her.

Trish Warren’s Hardbody Road to The Arnold

Trish Warren joins us to share what life is like as a mother, wife, business owner and top fitness pro. Trish made her return to the stage last year after having baby. She picked up where she left off and didn’t miss a beat. Trish continues to up her level of difficulty in her routines and is a threat to the stop in every show she enters. Check out what Trish has been up to and what a “normal day” in the Warren residence looks like.

Trish Warren Fitness Pro

Happy New Year Hardbodies!

Last year was a monumental year for me as I had to learn how to balance my life between God, Branch, Faith (my daughter), my career, and competing. At times it was very trying, and I spent a lot of time praying for the strength to endure such a busy lifestyle. Most women would shut down and give up, but I somehow found the courage to keep pushing forward. I have been blessed to have a support group that saw the champion in me that I was struggling to find. Some of the fears I faced were, stepping back on stage after having a baby not knowing if I will be as good as my last show; can I encourage Branch as he struggled with overcoming a knee injury that was re-injured during the filming of Generation Iron when he was bucked off his horse Pistol?

Can I give my daughter the attention she needs to meet all of her important mile stones, can I maintain my full-time business while Branch and I prep for a big show, and will the decision for Branch to work with Neil Hill bring a favorable look, or will it backfire?

My fears stuck with me through the Olympia, and while I seemed calm and collective on the outside, I was numb and a wreck on the inside.

Leading up to the Olympia our schedule seemed unbearable! Branch was going to therapy 3-4 times a week, which was adding to the stress of our normal hectic daily schedule. We had to stay up late, and get up early to get in all of his meals, because Neil had him eating so much more than he previously had. Faith was becoming more adventurous so trips to the gym were becoming more difficult, and my routine sessions were often paused so Faith could show me that she could do what I was doing. I remember boarding the plane to Vegas praying for God to give me the ability to handle any outcome with a positive attitude knowing that his plan was perfect and I have to trust this. Branch and I both slipped a few places and the weekend was much quieter than I was used to. I felt that I brought a very balanced physique to the stage and a super entertaining routine, but this was not enough to keep me in the top 5.

I then decided to see if I could redeem myself at the Europa Phoenix but once again left with a disappointing outcome. This weighed very heavy on my heart and I needed time to decompress and re-evaluate my fitness dreams. I continued to seek God for answers and search deep within myself to see if I still have the ability to be a competitive fitness pro. I have decided to give it another shot at the Fitness International as competing is my passion, and I do this for myself. I will go into this show with no expectations other than proving to myself that I still have the ability to make improvements. So far I have found a balance that seems to be working for us.

A normal day at the Warren residence looks something like this..

• 6:30 wake up, and have coffee and make breakfast while Branch does his cardio.
• 7:30-9:30 work
• 9:30 make our pre-workout meals
• 10:00-11:00 train
• 11:30 make lunch
• 12:00-2:30 work
• 2:30 prepare another meal for Branch and I
• 3:00-5:00 work
• 5:00 prepare another meal
• 5:30-7:00 my cardio and routine time
• 7:00 cook again
•  7:30-10:30 family time. Make a shake before bed.
• 10:30 listen to a sermon from Pastor Troy at www.opendoorexperience.com

Faith is with me most of the day and enjoys helping me work! She still goes to the gym with me and try’s to keep up with me as best she can. In the weeks leading up to the Fitness International I will be posting updates and recipes on my fan page www.facebook.com/trishwarrenfanpage, as well as blogs here on Hardbody. Thanks for your support and I will catch up with you in a couple of weeks!

Until Next Time,

Love Life and God Bless!
Trish Warren

Road to The Arnold with Yeshaira Robles

Yeshaira Robles is embarking on her return to the Arnold stage. In just a few short weeks, the New York momma will be competing in the Bikini International. She’s keeping us updated on her journey and what’s happening along the way. This year is extra special because she’s prepping with her fiancé, Marco Rivera. How is it prepping for a show together? See below and check out Yeshaira’s video on how she cooks the always popular tilapia.

Yeshaira Robles Road to The Arnold

Happy New Year Hardbodies! =D

Hope everyone enjoyed their Holidays, I sure did. I had one Christmas/Birthday wish that I was soooo hoping for… My biggest wish was for Marco Rivera (my fiancé) to get an invitation to compete at the 2014 Arnold Classic 212. When I found out the news I was jumping for joy. Especially knowing that we will be competing together at this amazing show. I got the privilege to compete there last year, and it was an incredible experience. We are 8 weeks out to the show and I literally just started my prep for it. Marco has been prepping since December.

How is it for us prepping together? Well it’s not that bad.I stay out of his way and he stays out of mine. It’s actually much more easier when we diet together. We both eat the same protein, carbs, vegetables etc. It’s more difficult when one is dieting while the other is not. There was an incident when I ordered pizza and the delivery guy came at the same time that Marco did from the gym. I was like “oh man he came early from the gym” he was pissed I thought my pizza was going to be tossed out the window LOL. My pizza days are behind me. It’s time to bring my best to the stage. I am very excited for this prep, and I’m looking forward to stepping on the Arnold stage again.

Let the prepping begin! Until next time keep training hard!

** Peace**

Arnold Classic Brasil To Return In 2014

Arnold Classic Brasil To Return In 2014
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Arnold Sports Festival is coming to South America.

The first-ever Arnold Classic Brasil will be held April 26-28 in Rio de Janeiro and will feature IFBB Pro League men’s bodybuilding, a complete lineup of amateur bodybuilding events and a fitness expo.

Arnold Classic Brasil is a joint venture between Gov. Schwarzenegger, Arnold Sports Festival co-promoter Jim Lorimer, International Federation of Body Building president Rafael Santonja, and Savaget Promotions of Sáo Paulo, Brazil.

“We are very excited to take the Arnold Sports Festival model to South America in 2013,” Lorimer said. “The creation of the first Arnold Classic Europe in Madrid in October 2012 proved that there was great demand worldwide for the Arnold Sports Festival concept, and we look forward to continuing our globalization efforts in Rio de Janeiro next year.”

The Arnold Classic Brasil will feature professional men’s bodybuilding sanctioned by the IFBB Pro League and amateur contests sanctioned by the International Federation of Body Building. Additional sports and contests will be announced in the near future.

The Arnold Classic Brasil will partner with the Rio Sports Show, held annually in Rio de Janeiro, to create a health and fitness expo that will attract more than 35,000 attendees. The expo will feature the latest in equipment, sports nutrition, apparel and accessories. An accompanying “Fight Pavilion” will feature the latest in mixed martial arts and other combat sports.

Organizers hope the Arnold Classic Brasil will build on the success of the Arnold Sports Festival, which began as the Arnold Classic professional men’s bodybuilding competition in 1989 and has grown to include more than 18,000 athletes competing in more than 45 sports and events each year. The Arnold Classic Europe debuted in October 2011 and will return in October 2012.

Oksana Grishina’s Hardbody Road to The Arnold

It’s a new year and with that comes new competitions. We’re excited to bring the first of many HARDBODY ROAD TO THE ARNOLD blogs with some of your favorite competitors. Who better to kick things off than one of the fans favorite fitness competitors… Oksana Grishina. Oksana continues to raise the bar with her routines and last year she brought the crowd to their feet with her JOKER themed performance. She’s kind enough to share her journey back to Columbus here with all of you. Check it out!

Fitness champion Oksana Grishina - Hardbody Road to the Arnold

Hi Hardbody Fans!

I hope you all had a great holiday with family and friends. I wish you all a Happy New Year! May all your dreams come true!!

Each new season of competition means a new performance for me. And, for me, each season begins with the Arnold Classic, the show where I debut my newest performance. Of course, at the end of each year, I never know what to expect. Without an idea that touches my heart and soul, and moves me to create, I’m not likely to compete. But I’ve been fortunate to have experiences and ideas that surprise and inspire me.

When I first had this new idea, it seemed impossible to do, but I did not give up, and everything is now coming together well. As a Fitness professional, I have always been impressed by girls who do pole dancing. I think it’s important for those of us who live and work in the world of Fitness to see and know all different forms and practices. Pole Dancing is a beautiful combination of art and fitness, and I am interested and enthusiastic about the growth of Pole Dancing classes and competition. Of course, some people just see it as a form of striptease, but it’s really totally different, and so much more than that, and this is what I like. It’s a difficult sport, but still accessible to people without a strong background in dance or gymnastics. Like anything else, it takes hard work and practice.

Of course, Pole Dancing is new to me, so I had to try it! I went to my first class and… couldn’t do a thing, lol. Despite my strength and background in sport, I was surprised to find how very hard it was. Still, like all sports, technique is the key. I am starting from scratch, but there is no giving up. I decided to get a pole of my own to work with at home. They are pretty expensive, so I am so happy to have the sponsorship of X-Pole, the leader in pole fitness equipment! With their help, and some expert training, it looks like all is good!

With a pole at home, I’m working out as much as I can. Of course, this is another workout to add to my schedule, on top of weight training, acrobatics, and cardio. It’s a lot of time and work, but I love it!! The pole work has been painful—for my arms and my skin everywhere! I’m getting lots of good advice and making progress every day. As I am a Fitness competitor first, the pole is just a part of my performance. But, I hope that by incorporating Pole Dance into my Fitness routine, I can share Fitness competition with the growing Pole Fitness movement, and expose the pole arts to the broader fitness community.

As always, I plan to give you my best at the Arnold Classic. This new routine is challenging, exciting and interesting for me, so I believe it will be something the fans will like as well. I’ll keep posting videos to Youtube as I train, so you can see my progress on the poleJ. Many thanks to X-Pole and the Arnold Classic team for making this performance possible!

In addition to the Arnold Classic and X-Pole, my sincere thanks go to my sponsors SAN Nutrition and SixPack Bags, both who help me to stay fit and in shape, in a healthy way, all year long, despite a busy competition and travel schedule!

2014 is the year of the Horse… my year! Work as hard as a horse, believe in yourself and your crazy ideas, and you’ll be blessed with success!

Until next time Hardbody,

Hardbody Challenge: How Many Pull-Ups Can You Do?

We challenge you to challenge yourself. This event isn’t timed but could prove to be a challenge. Over half of all female Marine recruits couldn’t do the minimum requirement of 3 pull-ups, which got us thinking… How many pull-ups can you do?

pull-ups
It’s been awhile for us but we’re up for the challenge if you are. The next time you’re in the gym take our HARDBODY CHALLENGE and remember to FINISH STRONG! You can share with us how many you did or keep it to yourself but do it. If you struggled to get one, that’s fine or if you can do 20 that’s cool too. The point is to do it. Write down how many you did and on what day. Then practice and in a month see if you can do more than you did the first time. The stronger you get the better you’ll feel and this little challenge can help you get stronger not only physically but mentally.

Marines delay female fitness plan after half fail

WASHINGTON (AP) — More than half of female Marines in boot camp can’t do three pullups, the minimum standard that was supposed to take effect with the new year, prompting the Marine Corps to delay the requirement, part of the process of equalizing physical standards to integrate women into combat jobs.

The delay rekindled sharp debate in the military on the question of whether women have the physical strength for some military jobs, as service branches move toward opening thousands of combat roles to them in 2016.

Although no new timetable has been set on the delayed physical requirement, Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James Amos wants training officials to “continue to gather data and ensure that female Marines are provided with the best opportunity to succeed,” Capt. Maureen Krebs, a Marine spokeswoman, said Thursday.

Starting with the new year, all female Marines were supposed to be able to do at least three pullups on their annual physical fitness test and eight for a perfect score. The requirement was tested in 2013 on female recruits at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C., but only 45 percent of women met the minimum, Krebs said.

The Marines had hoped to institute the pullups on the belief that pullups require the muscular strength necessary to perform common military tasks such as scaling a wall, climbing up a rope or lifting and carrying heavy munitions.

Officials felt there wasn’t a medical risk to putting the new standard into effect as planned across the service, but that the risk of losing recruits and hurting retention of women already in the service was unacceptably high, she said.

Because the change is being put off, women will be able to choose which test of upper-body strength they will be graded on in their annual physical fitness test.

Their choices:

— Pullups, with three the minimum. Three is also the minimum for male Marines, but they need 20 for a perfect rating.

— A flexed-arm hang. The minimum is for 15 seconds; women get a perfect score if they last for 70 seconds. Men don’t do the hang in their test.

Officials said training for pullups can change a person’s strength, while training for the flex-arm hang does little to adapt muscular strength needed for military tasks

The delay on the standard could be another wrinkle in the plan to begin allowing women to serve in jobs previously closed to them such as infantry, armor and artillery units.

The decision to suspend the scheduled pull-up requirement “is a clear indication” that plans to move women into direct ground combat fighting teams will not work, said Elaine Donnelly, president of the conservative Center for Military Readiness and a critic of allowing women into infantry jobs.

“When officials claim that men and women are being trained the same, they are referring to bare minimums, not maximum qualifications that most men can meet but women cannot,” Donnelly wrote in an email to The Associated Press. “Awarding gender-normed scores so that women can succeed lowers standards for all. Women will suffer more injuries and resentment they do not deserve, and men will be less prepared for the demands of direct ground combat.”

The military services are working to figure out how to move women into newly opened jobs and have been devising updated physical standards, training, education and other programs for thousands of jobs they must open Jan. 1, 2016, said Navy Lt. Cmdr. Nathan Christensen, a Defense Department spokesman. They must open as many jobs to women as possible; if they decide to keep some closed, they must explain why.

Military brass has said repeatedly that physical standards won’t be lowered to accommodate female applicants. Success for women in training for the upcoming openings has come in fits and starts.

In fall 2012, only two female Marines volunteered for the 13-week infantry officers training course at Quantico, Va., and both failed to complete it.

But the following fall, three Marines became the first women to graduate from the Corps’ enlisted infantry training school in North Carolina. They completed the same test standards as the men in the course, which included a 12-mile march with an 80-pound pack and various combat fitness trials such as timed ammunition container lifts and tests that simulate running under combat fire.

Officials had added specific training for female recruits when the pullup requirement was announced in December 2012, and they came up with a workout program for women already serving.

Military testing for physical skill and stamina has changed over the decades with needs of the armed forces. Officials say the first recorded history of Marine Corps physical fitness tests, for example, was 1908 when President Theodore Roosevelt ordered that staff officers must ride horseback 90 miles and line officers walk 50 miles over a three-day period to pass. A test started in 1956 included chinups, pushups, broad jump, 50-yard duck waddle and running.

The first test for women was started in 1969: A 120-yard shuttle run, vertical jump, knee pushups, 600-yard run/walk and situps.

WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks’ Owners Relinquish Control

The Grinch apparently wasn’t happy with just stealing Christmas and decided to pose as the Los Angeles Sparks’ owners on New Years Eve. The Women’s Naitonal Basketball (WNBA) team owners shutdown operations and laid off their president and general manager. The players have been paid but that doesn’t help soften the blow. The WNBA had increased awareness and attendance in 2013 and one can only speculate why the owners would relinquish control of the franchise. According to the Associate Press, several groups are interested in owning a WNBA team and the league is exploring various options.

The Sparks were established in 1997 and one of the original eight teams in the league. Lisa Leslie is arguably one of the biggest stars of the WNBA and played with The Sparks. In 2011, Lisa became a member of the Sparks’ ownership group and in doing so became the first former player to invest in a league team. The late Jerry Buss was an owner from 1997-2011. Gemini Basketball LLC. owned the team from 2007 – 2011 before Williams Group Holdings took over.

LA Sparks Ownership Group Gives up Franchise

The Los Angeles Sparks’ ownership group has given up control of the franchise.

WNBA President Laurel Richie told The Associated Press on Thursday that Sparks chairman Paula Madison informed the league right before Christmas that her family-owned company would no longer be involved with the team.

“The current ownership group has notified us that they are no longer willing to support the team,” Richie said. “They have shutdown operations and we in turn based on that have begun the process of taking action to return management control to the league.”

All Sparks front office personnel, including the team’s president and general manager, were laid off on New Year’s Eve via e-mail. The players, including star Candace Parker, have already been paid and their benefits will continue to be taken care of by the league.

The move comes after a banner year for the WNBA with attendance and viewership both up.

“My initally response was one of surprise,” Richie said. “Both in terms of how well the league was doing and is doing. I didn’t have any prior communication from the team that this was going to happen.”

Richie said that several groups have expressed interest in owning a WNBA team and the league is now exploring those options in regards to the Sparks. She said that while final numbers aren’t in yet from this past season, almost half the franchises were profitable this year. The Sparks weren’t one of them.

“We are busily looking at options and the nice thing is we’re coming off a strong season that makes those conversations easier to have,” Richie said.

Richie said it was too early to tell whether the Sparks would be playing this season which begins in four months.

“I’d rather not speculate on that,” she said. “What I can tell you is our team is working steadily and in a dedicated manner to move through all this and truly explore all our options with respect to the Sparks.”

Madison became the Sparks’ chairman in 2007 with an ownership group that included Kathy Goodman and Carla Christofferson, and former star Lisa Leslie was added to the group after her retirement. Before that the late Jerry Buss owned the team.

The franchise won titles in 2001 and 2002 and has made it to the playoffs in five of the past six seasons. They were knocked out in the opening round by Phoenix.

Los Angeles was one of the original eight franchises when the league began in 1997. The WNBA grew to 16 teams before several franchises folded, the last of which was Sacramento in 2009.
