ESPN Films Presents “The Price of Gold”

One of the most memorable events from the 1994 Winter Games involved Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding. The two U.S. Figure skaters created headlines across the globe but it was for the bizarre controversy off the ice. ESPN explores this fascinating story in an upcoming 30 for 30 and it’ll be one to watch.

ESPN Films’ Upcoming “The Price of Gold” Focuses on Tonya Harding, Nancy Kerrigan and the “Whack Heard Around the World” 20 Years Ago
On January 6, 1994, just weeks before the Olympic Games in Norway, Nancy Kerrigan was struck on the knee in a stunning attack and what unfolded was one of the most dramatic controversies in sports history. ESPN Films will debut a new 30 for 30 documentary, The Price of Gold, on Thursday, January 16, at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN. The documentary is directed by award-winning filmmaker Nanette Burstein (The Kid Stays in the Picture, American Teen, On the Ropes.)

The world was mesmerized by two athletes in particular at the 1994 Winter Games in Lillehammer – Nancy Kerrigan, the elegant brunette and Tonya Harding, the feisty blonde engulfed in scandal. Several weeks prior, at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, Kerrigan was shockingly clubbed on the right knee by an unknown assailant and left wailing, “Why, why, why?” As the bizarre “why” mystery unraveled, it was revealed that Harding’s ex-husband, Jeff Gillooly, had plotted the attack with his friends to eliminate Kerrigan from the competition and increase Harding’s chance at a gold medal. Now two decades later, The Price of Gold takes a fresh look at the worldwide spectacle that ensued with Harding in the center of it all.

“This surreal controversy unfolded during a time before the pervasive 24-hour news and tabloid culture that exists today,” said Libby Geist, director of development and producer for ESPN Films. “This film tells the story of how the Tonya/Nancy saga captured the attention of the world and created one of the most bizarre scandals in sports history.”

The Price of Gold features interviews with Tonya Harding, Connie Chung, Tony Kornheiser, coaches for both Kerrigan and Harding, Kerrigan’s husband/manager Jerry Solomon, and many others.

Press Release
Breckenridge, Colo. – December 14, 2013 In a thrilling finish at the Dew Tour iON Mountain Championships first final of the day Greg Bretz won the men’s Snowboard Superpipe Finals, and 1,000 points towards his USSA standings. The iON Mountain Championships serves as the first official U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) Olympic team selection event of the 2013-2014 season. Excitement levels were high and the suspense carried on through the very end of the competition with Shaun White’s final run, which placed him in second. Bretz claimed the coveted Dew Cup with a score of 91.40, and a run that featured a frontside double 1080, cab double 1080, frontside 900, backside 900, frontside 1080 and cab 1080. White took second with a score of 90.40; Taylor Gold finished third with 89.60.

“I’m excited to be at the Dew Tour and for my first big win,” said Bretz after the competition. “I’m so stoked it’s an Olympic selection event, and I was able to come out on top. I just try to ride for myself and stay away from what other people are doing. It ended up working out, and I am super stoked about it.”

White congratulated Bretz after the event, stating, “He’s a great rider!” His focus now turns to tomorrow’s event, of which he said, “I’m ready for slopestyle. Just keep going!”

After landing a backside air, frontside double cork 1080, cab double cork 1080, frontside 540, double mctwist 1260 to a backside rodeo, Shaun White took second on the podium. White’s performance on the superpipe, which at 600 feet in length is currently the longest in the world, earned him 800 points in the USSA standings.

Directly after the men’s competition, the women took a turn for the Snowboard Superpipe Final. Torah Bright set the bar high with her first run, landing a McTwist, air to fakie, cab 720, frontside 540, frontside alley-oop, and alley-oop backside rodeo. She posted a score of 95.40 that held first place through the remainder of the competition, topping second place finisher Kelly Clark.

“The aim of the game today was to do everything nice and big and stylish,” said Bright. “I wanted to do a run that was memorable. And this pipe is awesome, it is perfect!”

The afternoon’s action turned to the slopestyle course for the women’s Freeski Slopestyle Final. Devin Logan’s first run began with a lipslide to fakie on the first rail, a switch 270 on to 270 out of the flat down rail, followed by a right 540 safety to a switch left 540 safety, a Japan grab to straight slide, ending with a rodeo 540 safety on the final jump. Her technical moves were enough to put her in first place with a score of 87.80 that held throughout the rest of the competition, awarding Logan her first slopestyle Dew Cup.

“I’ve always wanted to win the Dew Tour,” said Logan, following the event. Now that it’s a USSA selection event, it makes it even better. I can breathe a little easier for the next couple of events.”

The night closed out with an exciting men’s Freeski Superpipe Final that saw David Wise draw on his amplitude and technical talent to rise above a strong field of American and international talent. Wise began his run with a switch right 900, switch left double cork 1080, right double cork 1260, left double cork 1260, alley-oop flat 540, finishing off with a left cork 900. His score of 92.60 led an American podium sweep.

“It’s an amazing thing to win the first contest of the season, especially since this is an Olympic selection event,” said Wise. “100 points for the qualification standings, you can’t start off more solid than that. I’ve always loved the Dew Tour. It’s got a really good feel to it. It’s exciting, and everyone put on a show tonight. It was fun to be a part of and pretty unreal to watch.”

The Dew Tour took over downtown Breckenridge last night, shutting down a block of Washington Ave. to create an urban snowboarding course for the Nike Snowboarding Streetstyle. Canadian Darcy Sharpe stood out during the half hour organized jam session, gaining both the overall win and Best Trick title for his frontside bluntslide 450 out on the dumpster.

“This is really cool,” said Sharpe, following the contest. “It’s sick to keep street competitions in Dew Tour and shows more style involved in snowboarding. Everybody killed it, so I’m stoked.”

Lululemon Founder Stepping Down as Chairman

Chip Wilson, founder of popular clothing maker Lululemon, will be stepping down as chairman. You may recall his comments last month on Bloomberg TV and then the apology that followed. He will still have a seat on the company’s board of directors. Laurent Potdevin will take over as CEO in January.

Lululemon Founder Stepping Down as Chairman
By Associated Press
Lululemon Athletica Inc. is hoping new faces at the top will help it bounce back from a series of embarrassing issues that have hurt its image.

The upscale yoga clothing maker announced that founder Chip Wilson is stepping down as chairman after raising ire with his comments about the body types of potential buyers of the retailer’s yoga pants. The company also named a new CEO.

Wilson, who founded the company in 1998 and still exerted a strong influence at the company, will retain his board seat.

Christine Day, who had been CEO since 2008 but announced her intentions to leave in June, will be succeeded by Laurent Potdevin. Potdevin, a 20 year-industry veteran, was most recently CEO of Toms Shoes.

Toms has made a name for itself as a socially conscious company that matches every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of shoes given to a child in need.

Potdevin will take over the top role in January and will become a board member at that time. Day is expected to stay with Lululemon through the end of its fiscal year to help with the transition.

The Canadian company named lead director Michael Casey as chairman. Wilson will resign before the company’s annual meeting in June, at which point Casey will assume the role.

The management changes come as the maker of yoga clothing is trying to get in front of a series of quality issues and other embarrassments that have threatened to alienate its loyal followers Those devotees, willing to shell out $100 for a pair of yoga pants, helped Lululemon ring up $1.4 billion in sales last year.

Lululemon has endured complaints about the sheerness of some of its pants, which made them see-through at times. Customers also complained of pilling after a few months of wear — or even just a few uses — and about holes and seams coming apart.

The retailer pulled one style of its popular yoga pants from store shelves in the spring, blaming sheerness on a style change and production issues. Fixing the problem cost the company millions and made investors question quality control. New pants have since hit stores, but the sheerness complaints have continued, in addition to the new gripes about wear and tear.

Wilson also raised ire with his comments about potential buyers of yoga pants. Wilson said in a recent television interview that some women’s bodies “just don’t actually work” for Lululemon pants. He also said thighs rubbing over time will cause the pants to wear out too quickly.

Wilson did seem to apologize to Lululemon’s workers for the criticism his comments received, but didn’t retract his original statements.

Analysts who follow the company believe Wilson alienated some core customers and potentially opened a door in the lucrative market to rivals like Nike, Under Armour, Athleta and others.

Still, many analysts praised the company’s move to hire Potdevin, who they believe has good experience in building global brands.

“Given the various product and supply chain hiccups the company has undergone this past year, we believe Mr. Laurent will bring a fresh start and new perspective at this retailer,” Jefferies retail analyst Randal Konik wrote in a note to clients on Tuesday.

Wilson’s decision to step out of the chairman role could eliminate the “too many cooks in the kitchen” scenario, he said, and give the new CEO more flexibility to make changes.

Shares of Lululemon Athletica Inc. slipped 8 cents to $70.40 in midday trading Tuesday. The stock is down about 8 percent for the year and has been choppy since March when the company pulled the “see-through” yoga pants off shelves.

Lululemon hired a new product chief in late October, bringing in a Kmart leader to help fill a role left vacant after the see-through yoga pants snafu.

Potdevin became president of Toms Shoes in 2011. He spearheaded the expansion of the brand in 12 countries in the last 12 months. Before that, he spent more than 15 years at snowboard company Burton Snowboards in various positions, and as CEO from 2005 to 2010. He began his career in 1991 at French luxury goods purveyor LVMH.

Fitness Champions Jen Hendershott and Nicole Wilkins Team Up

Jen Hendershott was known for her energetic fitness routines and her contagious energy off stage. Jen never “officially” retired but it’s highly unlikely we’ll ever see her compete again, but never say never. While she was competing Jen was one of the first to organize and conduct camps. She started Phat Camp over a decade ago and having been to one of them in the past, there’s a reason why it’s still going strong.

phat-camps

Jen motivates, inspires and educates women of all shapes and sizes and encourages them to be the best version of themselves. In a press release this week, Jen announced she has teamed up with fellow Olympia champion, Nicole Wilkins. Nicole recently won her third Figure Olympia. The duo will travel the world with the Phat Camp tour and in 2015, Nicole will take over the popular camps and will carry the torch on her own.

NEWS RELEASE

Ms. Fitness International & Ms. Olympia Champions Jen Hendershott and Nicole Wilkins have teamed up to make Phat Camp bigger and better than ever.

Burlington, NC — Former Fitness International Champion, Olympia Champion, entrepreneur, and school teacher Jen Hendershott started Phat Camp 12 years ago. Jen started this venture with a simple idea of wanting to help women feel and look their best and to inspire them to strive to live well. With her passion to help others, she rolled a hand full of t-shirts into a suitcase and took off to her first stop in Calgary, Canada. For over a decade, lives have changed, hearts have been touched, and dreams have come true not only for Jen, but for all the campers who have attended over the years.

This love and passion paved the way for women and fitness champions like Nicole Wilkins to step up 12 years later and take over something so amazing. In fall of 2012, Jen approached Nicole, a current International and Olympia champion, model, and Met-Rx spokesperson, with the idea of taking over Phat Camp. After many conversations and ideas shared, they have decided to team up and to make this better than ever. They said, “Let’s work together and go BIG!”

During 2014, they will travel the world together to not only make a bigger impact on women’s lives, but to touch more generations. With the sponsorship of MET-Rx and 6 Pack Bags, next year’s Phat Camp will be bigger and better than those camps in years past. In 2015, it is anticipated that Nicole will carry on Jen’s legacy by taking over the Phat Camp industry.

With Nicole being almost 30 years old and Jen being in her early forties, they know that by teaming up that they will be able to help so many more women around the world. This camp will be for housewives, business women, runners, busy moms, and competitors, women who struggle to lose weight, women with hardship, and the everyday women who want to be their personal best.

2014 IFBB Pro Figure Competition Schedule

There are over 20 competitions on the 2014 IFBB Pro Figure schedule. A new addition to a handful of shows will be a Masters Figure competition. While the winners won’t qualify for the Olympia they will have another opportunity to compete in the pro league. The Figure season gets started in March with the Figure International and will conclude in November.

The schedule is pretty much the same as 2013 with the addition of the Masters events (held in conjunction with other shows). The Emerald Cup did add pro Figure and there is also a Masters Pro event in Pittsburgh. The winners of each open show qualify for the Olympia and second through fifth place collect points in the Olympia Point Series.

Social Media & The Selfie Syndrome – Making Us Narcissistic?

The “selfie” is common practice for most in the fitness industry. It’s not uncommon to see men and women posing in front of the mirror, any mirror, for a “selfie”. Heck it doesn’t even have to be a mirror for some, any reflective surface might be a perfect photo opportunity to snap a pic of one’s bod.  It’s harmless and just a way to show off that killer sweat, right? Totally girlfriend and if anyone says different they’re just a hater! Nothing like sharing how amaze balls a booty pump was or a close up of boob sweat to gain a few “likes” on Instagram.

selfie syndrome

It’s likely not a question of if but when and how many selfies we’ve taken at this point. Some people have made it an art form while others of us struggle not to look like we’re constipated posing for the perfect selfie. Does this seemingly harmless activity lead to other issues? An infographic by The Best Computer Science Schools suggests selfies might point to narcissism. After reading the narcissistic signs, I’d have to agree that many in the fitness industry are guilty.  Check it out….

What is Narcissism?
● Narcissistic personality disorder involves a preoccupation with self and how one is perceived by others. Narcissists pursue gratification from vanity and the admiration of their own physical and intellectual attributes.

Signs of narcissism:
â—‹ Unilateral listening
■ Instead of listening in order to respond, narcissists listen in order to dismiss, negate, ignore, minimize or otherwise make someone else’s concerns irrelevant
â—‹ Preoccupied with self
â–  Narcissists act selfishly and, even if being generous, are generally only responsive to their own concerns
â—‹ Being above the rules
■ Narcissists feel that they are above others and that the rules don’t apply to them
â—‹ Inability to take criticism
â–  While narcissists have an inflated idea of their own importance, they can be quickly deflated by negative criticism
â—‹ Refusal to take responsibility
â–  Narcissists have a tendency to blame others for things that go wrong
â—‹ Quick to anger
â–  Narcissists may become easily angered by critical comments or being ordered what to do

Negative Effects of Social media:
● According to research from California State University: Excessive use of social networking may be connected to psychiatric problems
â—‹ Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
â—‹ Depression
â—‹ Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
â—‹ Narcissistic Personality Disorder
â—‹ Hypochondriasis
â—‹ Schizoaffective and Schizotypal Disorders
â—‹ Body Dysmorphia
â—‹ Voyeurism
â—‹ Addiction

The Effects of Popular Platforms:
● Facebook- The Social Mirror
â—‹ People who use Facebook the most tend to have more narcissistic or insecure personalities
â—‹ Those with higher narcissism scores were frequently updating statuses, posting pictures of themselves and using quotes or mottos to glorify themselves
â—‹ Based on a study of Facebook users ages 18-25 using the Narcissism Personality Inventory and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale.
â—‹ A 2012 survey of divorce lawyers showed that Facebook had been implicated in â…“ of all divorce filings the previous year

● Twitter- The Social Megaphone
â—‹ In a University of Michigan study of college undergraduates, it was found that those who scored higher in narcissism also posted more often on Twitter
â—‹ Young people are using Twitter to broaden social circles and broadcast views. This usage leads people to over evaluate the importance of their opinions

Are you becoming a narcissist? Nahhhh of course not. Instead of pretending like you could never be one, ask your friends if they see any of the above mentioned signs in you. Take a honest look at yourself, just do so without your phone in hand.

Smart Bra – Support for Emotional Eating

A bra that can prevent overeating? Don’t laugh, there are people working on it. True story. A group at the University of Rochester Department of Computer Science are researching a “just-in-time support system for emotional eating”. The researchers conducted user studies and built a prototype with the wearable technology.

smart-bra
The following information is from the report.

RESEARCH APPROACH
Designing a system to provide just-in-time interventions for emotional eating is an ambitious endeavor. Consider the following hypothetical scenario:

Sally has been home from work for a few hours, and she finds herself rather bored. An application on Sally’s mobile phone has also detected that she is bored by reading her physiological state through wearable sensors. Since this mobile application has previously learned that Sally is most susceptible to emotional eating when she is bored, the application provides an intervention to distract Sally and hopefully prevent her from eating at that moment.

From this scenario, we see three key requirements for a just-in-time support system for emotional eating. First, the application has to be aware of the user’s emotional eating
patterns. Does Sally emotionally eat only when she is bored? Second, the system needs to be able to implicitly detect emotions. This involves wearable physiological sensors that are connected to the mobile phone. Implicit detection of emotions would then be possible through machine learning classification, which requires training on large amounts of users’ data.

Finally, it is critical (and perhaps the most challenging) to determine how to intervene. What type of intervention do we design? How often do we intervene? How do we prevent it from becoming an annoyance to the user? Our approach to researching a just-in-time support system for emotional eating was to make strides towards addressing these three requirements. We studied these requirements across three user studies, which have been summarized below.

• First, the application has to be aware of the user’s emotional eating patterns. Does Sally emotionally eat only when she is bored?

• Second, the system needs to be able to implicitly detect emotions. This involves wearable physiological sensors that are connected to the mobile phone. Implicit detection of emotions would then be possible through machine learning classification, which requires training on large amounts of users’ data.

• Finally, it is critical (and perhaps the most challenging) to determine how to intervene. What type of intervention do we design? How often do we intervene? How

Study 1: Gather Emotional Eating Patterns.
We investigated eating behaviors and corresponding emotions of participants by having them self-report their emotions and log their eating patterns using a custom built application called EmoTree. The goal was to understand their emotions associated with eating.

Study 2: Investigate An Intervention Technique.
The purpose of Study 2 was to learn about a particular intervention technique for emotional eating. We prototyped implicit intervention by triggering an intervention based on self reported ratings of emotions. This allowed us to gather early feedback about interventions before implementing an automatic system. Are users aided by the intervention? Was the intervention sent at the appropriate time? What other types of interventions would interest users?

Study 3: Emotion Detection with Wearables.
This work was a first step in building an automatic system. We investigated the feasibility of using physiological sensor data, combined with machine learning, to automatically detect emotions in a mobile system. We also present the design of our wearable system.

The hypothetical feedback, whether from a social network, a close friend, or pre-recorded messages, served as a health intervention to encourage the person to be more active or consume less food.

Behavior modification in health is difficult, as habitual behaviors are extremely well-learned, by definition. This research is focused on building a persuasive system for behavior modification around emotional eating. In this paper, we make strides towards building a just-in-time support system for emotional eating in three user studies. The first two studies involved participants using a custom mobile phone application for tracking emotions, food, and receiving interventions. We found lots of individual differences in emotional eating behaviors and that most participants wanted personalized interventions, rather than a pre-determined intervention. Finally, we also designed a novel, wearable sensor system for detecting emotions using a machine learning approach. This system consisted of physiological sensors which were placed into women’s brassieres. We tested the sensing system and found positive results for emotion detection in this mobile, wearable system.

Wearable technology is the wave of the future but is this taking it too far? Let us know your thoughts on twitter @hardbodynews or in the comments below.

Hardbody Poll – Should Wonder Woman Be More Muscular Than Gal Gadot?

Gal Gadot was announced as the new Wonder Woman and fitness fans are not stoked. Our friends at FitnessRX for Women magazine posted the announcement on their Facebook fan page and asked, “Are there any current fitness personalities or competitors you think have the ideal shape for Wonder Woman?”

wonder-woman

The two most popular responses to the question were Gina Carano and Erin Stern. Amanda Latona had a few votes as well. Obviously, the role of Wonder Woman requires some acting chops but should the character be more muscular?

{democracy:260}

The following comments all came from women on the FitnessRX for Women fan page…

– She looks anorexic… I thought Wonder Woman is supposed to be strong and fit!

– This Gal I don’t Know Who, is thin with no muscles on…

– I would expect someone more like a fitness model or more muscle.

– Hate me all you wont but I love my comic characters & she will ruin it.

– She needs to gain some weight… Too skinny

– She does not have the physique of Wonder Woman. I am disappointed with the choice, but hopefully she can bulk up.

– She’s pretty but wonder women has way more muscle and is bustier.

– The only thing to wonder about this woman is how she can stand with just a meal day.

– She’s thin… wonder woman looks strong and sexy.

– I personally think she is too skinny and doesn’t represent a fit body.

Celebrate Wonder Woman Instead of Bashing Gadot

Warner Bros. Pictures confirmed Wednesday that Gal Gadot will play Wonder Woman in an upcoming, untitled “Batman vs Superman” movie. The 28 year-old actress is best known for her role in the “Fast & Furious” and Fast Five as Gisele Harabo. She’s a mother of one, model and was Miss Israel in 2004.

wonder-woman-gal-gadot

A large part of the Internet is in a tizzy wondering how she was picked for the role. Not because she can’t act (she can see clip below) but because of her appearance. Obviously as a model and Miss Universe contestant she has the face but does her physique match that of a super heroine? Not to some standards but hey the movie isn’t slated to hit the big screen until the Summer of 2015 so cut the woman some slack.

Wonder Woman is thought of as strong female character and Gal’s slender frame doesn’t exactly exude “strength”, at least not in the physical sense. Director Zack Snyder said, “Wonder Woman is arguably one of the most powerful female characters of all time and a fan favorite in the DC Universe.” Will fans buy into Gal as Wonder Woman? Would a bit of muscle on Gal make her a more believable choice? In my opinion, it wouldn’t hurt but you could argue Gal doesn’t look all that different from the 1970s TV version of Wonder Woman. Lynda Carter played Wonder Woman from 1975-1979 on the series and wasn’t overly muscular. In 2011, Davide E. Kelley wrote a Wonder Woman pilot but the show never aired. Adrianne Palicki starred as Wonder Woman and looked the part despite the show not being picked up. She recently co-starred in the film G.I. Joe: Retaliation as the lead female role of Lady Jaye.

I bet we see Gal make a shocking transformation for the role as Wonder Woman. Those who are saying she is “too skinny” now will be eating those words come 2015. We’ve seen many actors transform their physiques and I’m betting we see her do it as well. You can count on the fitness magazines featuring Gal in the Spring/Summer of 2015.

If you question her ability to be a bad ass, check out this clip.

I’ve read numerous comments from people in the fitness industry talk about who looks more like Wonder Woman but they fail to mention none of those women are actresses. No disrespect to those being mentioned but when your acting reel is being interviewed after a show you’re not much of an actress. You might have dark hair and abs but that doesn’t mean much in Hollywood unless you’re a body double. Instead of bashing Gadot, I say applaud the fact that Wonder Woman is finally making it to the big screen and that’s awesome no matter who is in the role.

That’s my take. What’s yours? Join the conversation on Facebook.

UFC Champ Ronda Rousey on Jimmy Kimmel Live

UFC Bantamweight Champ, Ronda Rousey made an appearance last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Kimmel opens the segment saying there is no one he’d rather go Black Friday shopping with than Rousey. It sets the tone for the rest of interview, which was refreshingly fun. Ronda discusses how she was able to enjoy Thanksgiving and eat more than an ice cube, her words not mine. She goes onto chat with Jimmy about how her mom, AnnMaria Demars, got her into fighting. In 1984, AnnMaria was the first-ever American to win the Judo World Championships.

ronda rousey jimmy kimmel

Ronda said her mom’s motto was “always be ready”. She gives an example of how she’s always ready in part two of the interview, shown below. It was nice to see a much more light-hearted, upbeat side to the champ. Since the airing of The Ultimate Fighter, where Ronda was a coach, she’s received backlash from fight fans. This interview makes her a much more likable personality and more appealing to mainstream.

Ronda continues to take care of business in the octagon (she’s undefeated and won by arm bar in the first round of them) and will look to do so again at the end of this month. Ronda faces Meisha Tate at UFC 168 on December 28, 2013.

Julianna Pena Wins First Women’s The Ultimate Fighter

Season 18 of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) brought female fighters on the show for the first time. On Saturday night, the finale featured Jessica Rakoczy and Julianna Pena competing for the first ever women’s TUF title. Pena had a target on her back from the beginning of the show based on her training partner and history with one of the coaches.

Miesha Tate and Ronda Rousey served as the coaches on The Ultimate Fighter and Julianna had been a long-time training partner of Tates. Rousey knew this and attempted to sink Tate’s battleship by pitting her against her number one fighter in the first fight of the show. Ronda matched up her number one pick, Shayna Baslzer against Meisha’s girl, Julianna. The plan backfired. Julianna won the fight and set her destiny in motion. She gained confidence by beating the opposing team’s number one fighter, a fighter who many thought would win the entire season.

Fast-forward to Saturday night in Las Vegsas where Julianna stopped Jessica Rakoczy with just one second left in the first round. The win made Julianna the first-ever female TUF champion. She’s a fighter who will make her presence known in and out of the octagon in the months ahead. She likes to speak her mind and like the current champion, Rousey, she creates headlines when she interacts with the media.

When talking about the women’s division in the UFC and the attention its getting Pena tells Thomas Gerbasi from UFC.com that women “take things a little bit more personal and we’re like psycho women trying to protect our baby cub. We’re not going to let anybody get in the way of our dreams and what we have worked so hard for. I think the women display a lot of heart and they make for more interesting fights.”
