Jennifer Rankin Crowned 2011 Bodyspace Spokesmodel Winner

Last weekend, at the LA Fit Expo, Bodybuilding.com held the finals to their Bodyspace Spokesmodel Search contest. Bodyspace is Bodybuilding.com’s social network that allows people to set up profiles, post and track fitness goals, view exercises and more. This is the third year that the event has been held in conjunction with the Los Angeles Fit Expo.

The competition was fierce and the judges were not unanimous in their decision but in the end Jennifer Rankin from Texas prevailed. Jenn is rising star in the NPC Bikini ranks and undoubtedly will be one of the top again this year. Don’t be surprised if she is competing with the pros before the year is over. Jen shared on her Bodyspace, “As the 2011 BodySpace Spokesmodel I hope to inspire others in the same way. I want people to know that they can do anything in this world that they want to do, whether its their first competition, losing weight, gaining muscle, or stepping into the gym for the first time after years of inactivity.”

Steve Cook took home Gold in the Men’s division. Steve was also the winner of the Muscle & Fitness Cover Model search held at last year’s Olympia. Kathleen Tesori was in the runner-up position and certainly see more of her in the months ahead. Laura Bailey and Felicia Romero went three and four in the event. Both women had a slightly more muscular physique than the others, as they should, they are both Figure competitors. Felicia gave fans a little preview of what her physique will look like at the Figure International. She’s definitely in shape and on track. Lindsay Kaye rounded the top five.

Top finalists in the event.

TOP FIVE FINALIST RESULTS:
1. Steve Cook (stevecook_32) & Jennifer Rankin (TXphysique)
2. Kizzito Ejam (kizmvp) & Kathleen Tesori (KathleenTesori)
3. Scott Dorn (SMDMN) & Laura Bailey (jumper11)
4. Kelechi Opara (Madtitan) & Felicia Romero (fromero)
5. Ryan Hughes (dubcplaya069) & Lindsay Kaye (LinzKaye)

The votes have been counted and the field has been narrowed down to just five women. The 2011 BodySpace Spokesmodel Search finalists are set and a winner will be crowned at the LA Fit Expo later this month. IFBB Fitness Pro Allison Ethier was the inaugural winner and Jacquelyn Roberts took home the win last year. Who will it be this year?

Bodyspace / Ironman Spokesmodel Finals

There is still chance to cast your vote in the Bodyspace / IRONMAN spokesmodel search. 10 finalists have spent the last couple days in LA doing a number of events in the final round. 5 women and 5 men were chosen out of thousands of applicants. Tomorrow night the one male and one female winner will be announced LIVE on the bodybuilding.com IRONMAN webcast. You can cast your votes on bodybuilding.com for you who think should win.

I ran into one of the finalists and hardbody.com reader, Allison Either tonight. She was excited to be part of the final group and hopes to hear her name announced as the winner tomorrow night. This Canadian cutie has been around the fitness scene awhile and thinks she has what it takes to win. I can’t say I disagree with her. She won last year’s Arnold Amateur fitness and will be competing in it again this year. Good luck Allison and all the other finalists.

Female Fitness Stars Take the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

ice bucket challenge

You’ve probably seen it at least once. A video of someone getting a bucket of ice or water dumped over them. What is this ice bucket challenge and why are people doing it?

It’s called the ALS ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE. ALS stands for Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and is often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The official website describes ALS as, “a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body.”

Currently, there is only one drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat ALS, which only modestly extends survival by two to three months. Consequently, ALS is 100 percent fatal. In addition to acclimating to the challenges that come with losing control of voluntary muscle movement, people with the disease progressively lose their ability to eat, speak, walk, and eventually breathe.

How the challenge typically works is a participant dumps a bucket of ice or ice cold water over their head and donates money to ALS. If you accept the challenge the suggested donation is $10. If you opt out of dumped ice water over your head the suggested donation is $100. Obviously it’s up to each individual whether they take the challenge and donate or not. Those who accept the challenge are then asked to nominate three friends to do the same. ALS.org reports, “As of Monday, August 18, The ALS Association has received $15.6 million in donations compared to $1.8 million during the same time period last year (July 29 to August 18).”

Of course, there are going to be people complaining about the videos. If you’re on Facebook or twitter you’ve likely seen people say things like “we’re in a drought” and “stop wasting water” as a response to the videos. I’m fairly certain people are being far more wasteful than dumping a bucket of ice water over their heads and creating awareness for a good cause. Instead of bitching about the videos and people “making it all about themselves” educate others on what it’s about and why it’s worthwhile. Even if you don’t participate it’s part of a great good and there’s nothing wrong with sharing positivity.

Before you complain about raising awareness for ALS watch this video of Steve Saling who suffers from ALS.

Here’s an on-going collection of some Fitness Stars who have taken the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. See more on youtube and use #icebucketChallenge throughout your social media to help raise awareness for this devastating disease. You can donate here.

Interview with Iceland’s First (and only) IFBB Pro Margret Gnarr

Iceland’s first and only IFBB Pro took a few minutes out of her busy schedule to share a bit more about herself. Margret Gnarr will be making her IFBB Pro debut this weekend at the Bikini International in Columbus, Ohio. You may not have heard much about her before but rest assured you will in the coming days. Marget’s hardbody and looks speak for themselves but what you may not have known is that she’s a blackbelt in Tae Kwon Do. Get to know a bit more about Margret and give her a bit of encouragement as she’s not only competing as a pro for the first time but also representing an entire country.

margret gnarr

Name:

Margret Gnarr

Born in:
1989

Currently live in:
Reykjavik, Iceland

Any brothers or sisters?
Yes I have 6 siblings, 3 brothers and 3 sisters

Where do you fall in the ages?
I grew up with two of my siblings to the age of 11 and I was the middle child. My brother is 2 years older than me and my sister is 3 years younger.

Any pets?
I have two dogs. Dolly is a Chihuahua/Cavalier mix and Ronja is a Icelandic sheepdog / Russian sled dog mix.

One food you will NOT eat:
Cucumbers !!! Hate them! Sometimes I say I’m allergic just to avoid eating them! I don’t know what is is with cucumbers. My dad and my younger sister are the same. haha

After my workout I typically eat…
Chicken, sweet potatoes and sweet peppers

Did you play sports growing up?
Yes, I was all over the place growing up! I loved all sports and I was very active from a young age. My favorite class in school was gym-class! I started in gymnastics when I was 6 but I didn’t have a lot of discipline so my parents sent me to Taekwondo for one year. At the age of 8 I went into figure skating and that’s when I started competing in sports and absolutely loved competing! I wanted to be the first figure skating competitor from Iceland to compete at the winter Olympics! At the age of 14 I hurt my ankles and couldn’t handle the landings after the high jumps so I took 6 months off from training and after 6 months my friend asked me about Taekwondo and told me she wanted to try it out. I went with her to our first training and after my first Taekwondo class I was hooked. I stopped figure skating and found another passion. Soon I got in the youth national team in Olympic Taekwondo Sparring and started competing. I have competed several times in Taekwondo and I have the black belt. I have been doing Taekwondo for over 10 years.

margret gnarr world champions winner

How did you get into competing in Bikini?
I have been interested in Bikini fitness since 2008 when it started in Iceland. My friend competed at the IFBB Icelandic Championship and I thought she looked so great. I have always been interested in modeling and I am also a singer so I love to be on stage. When it comes to modeling I was always told I had the face for it but not the body. My body was too athletic for modeling. When I saw the Bikini fitness class for the first time I thought to myself: “that’s perfect for me!” But at that time I had very low self-esteem after years of bullying and I knew I had to work on my self first to be able to handle fitness competitions. In beginning of 2011 I finally had the self-esteem I needed and decided to compete. My first competition was the IFBB Icelandic Cup in November 2011 and after that contest I was hooked!

A singer huh… Who is your favorite singer?
I have so many favorite singers! Can’t pick one:) Here are couple of my absolute favorite: Jason Mraz, Ed Sheeran, Imogen Heap, Hayley Williams and Jonathan Davis.

Will you give us a sample of your singing at the Arnold?
Yes! Of course! Will you play the guitar then?

margret gnarr world champions winner

Yes, totally! (Note to self forget to pack guitar).

Contest history:
IFBB Icelandic Cup 2011 – 3rd place
Arnold Amateur USA 2012 – 4th place
IFBB Icelandic Championhip 2012 – 2nd place
IFBB World Championship 2012 – NP
Arnold Amateur Europe 2012 – 13th place
IFBB Icelandic Cup 2012 – 1st place
IFBB World Championship 2013 – 1st place

How long have you been practicing taekwondo?
– For over 10 years now

Do you still do taekwondo while prepping for a bikini show?
I do Taekwondo in my off seasons but 12 weeks into a bikini show I only train Taekwondo

by myself. The reason is I don’t want to get hurt or bruised on Taekwondo trainings. When I train Taekwondo I do a lot of sparring and you can get hurt and that’s not good when you are prepping for a bikini show. Doesn’t look very good on stage to be bruised. haha

Do you have any foods in Iceland that you won’t find in the USA?
Yes! Icelandic Candy, Icelandic dry fish, Icelandic yogurt skyr.is (You can find Skyr in Wholefoods but its not the same as in Iceland)

margret gnarr world championships contest

What is Icelandic candy like?
– Its heaven! Icelandic chocolate is the BEST! I will bring some Icelandic candy with me for everybody to taste!!

What’s iceland dry fish like or is there nothing like it and it’s super amazing?
Icelandic dry fish is awesome in competition prep. There are 83 grams of protein in 100 grams of dry fish and no carbs. It’s very popular in Iceland and we grow up eating it like candy.

What’s the biggest difference between USA and Iceland that you’ve noticed?
The biggest difference in general is the size and population! There are 320.000 people who live in Iceland! That’s like a small town in the US!

How’s it feel to be the only IFBB Pro from Iceland?
I can’t explain the feeling. I still can’t believe I achieved that dream. Ever since I started competing I wanted to be the first Icelandic fitness competitor to become an IFBB Pro. I am honored to be the first IFBB Pro from Iceland and I hope I will make my country proud.

How long do you prepare for a competition?I’m prepping all year round but I start the competition diet 12 weeks into a competition.

Do you follow the same training you did from a couple years ago?
No, I got a new personal trainer last year and changed a lot. Doing more reps, lighter weights and more cardio.

Do you workout with a trainer?
No my coach lives on the other side of the country so I workout alone but sometimes a have a workout partner.

What tips would you give women who are looking for a trainer – what should they look for?
Always look for a trainer that has the right experience for your goals. I also think it’s really important to feel 100% trust to your trainer.

What are you doing when not measuring food, hitting the gym or hitting pads?
I’m a personal trainer, a posing coach, a spokesmodel and a singer. I barely get any free time! When I have some free time I like to just lay in bed and watch TV shows with my fiancé and my dogs and I also love to go to the spa at my gym, World Class.

I understand you have asthma. How do you overcome having asthma with cardio – any tips for others who suffer from asthma?
The right exercises helped me with my asthma. I barely feel it anymore. The asthma was very bad when I was younger but after I started doing sprints 3 times a week my endurance has never been better!

Do you listen to music while you work out? If so what’s your go to song for this prep?
Yes! I LOVE listening to music! I listen to dupstep and I have the volume very high. Keeps me more focused. Currently I’m listening to Skrillex, Modestep, NERO, Korn, House of Titans, Aviici and more.

What’s your typical breakfast look like?
I always have oatmeal for breakfast and when I’m not 12 weeks out from a bikini show I like to add cashew nuts, green apples and goji berries in my oatmeal.

photo of margret gnarr

Any tips for surviving a long flight?
Get a good sleep! That’s the best thing to do!

Has this prep been different from previous shows?
Yes, I have been doing way more cardio than I’m used to. That was probably the only difference but what matters most to me while prepping for a show is to feel good mentally, physically and emotionally.

How important is it to have a strong support system around you?
I find it very important because it keeps me motivated! That’s why I always surround myself with peop

le who support me.

Any one you’d like to thank?
There are so many people I would like to thank. My family and friends for all of their support. My coach Johann Nordfjord for always being there for me. My Icelandic sponsors: Nings, Harlengingar.is, Jan Tana Iceland, BPro Iceland, WOWair, Fitness Sport, Hamark, NYX Iceland, LG Simar, NIP+FAB Iceland, Fitness Akademian, Mizu beauty salon and Kiss Kringlunni. My American sponsors: BN Shape and Ravish Sands. I am also extremely thankful to the IFBB Pro league for giving me this amazing opportunity to compete at the Arnold Classic, Bikini international. It has been a dream ever since I started competing in Bikini fitness and I am so honored.

What’s the best advice anyone has given you so far in life?
My coach taught me not to take myself too seriously and that has helped me in my competitions and life in general.

Where can people find more info on you?

The New Year is right around the corner and women’s fitness magazines are focusing on building a better booty, at least on their covers. As you can see the magazines took totally different approaches in how they feature the female posterior. We want to know which cover do YOU like better?

booty cover, magazine,fitness, new year

The two covers feature the popular models looking over their left shoulder and both are smiling. Jamie is in workout clothes but her booty is show in a pair of pants. Amanda’s cover has her in a workout top and a mid-cut pair of bottoms. When you compare the two next to each other you can see a distinct difference in how the two magazines chose to feature the female butt.

Jamie Eason’s LiveFit Trainer – Shape Your Body in 12 Weeks

Jamie Eason has taken the fitness world by storm over the last few years. As a Bodybuilding.com spokesmodel, living fit is a way of life and now you can follow her very own 12 week training program to help you shape the body you desire. Jamie’s LiveFit trainer is a simple 3-phase program that walks you through every step of the process from workouts to nutrition and supplementation.

A 12-Week Program For You!
As a fitness professional and Bodybuilding.com spokesmodel, I’m often asked, “How do I get in shape? How can I improve my muscle tone? How can I look more like you?!”

How Can I Look More Like You?!

I always try to offer answers and some encouragement, and I’ve received so much inspiration back in return from all of you. But as much as I love those opportunities to help people transform, they’re one-on-one interactions. Now, to answer the thousands of questions I’ve received over the years–and to reach those of you I would never otherwise meet–I’ve come up with one great program: my 12-week trainer. Your transformation guide; our partnership in fitness.

Who’s this program for? Anyone of any age, of any sex, and from any walk of life. Including you. It’ll produce great results and lead to lasting success for everyone. You’re all starting from a unique place; no one has perfectly matched genetics, metabolism, hormones, and lifestyles. But the beauty of this program is that you start at your own level and work at your own pace. Everyone’s body is different, but the same training, diet, and supplement principles work for nearly everyone.

Visit Bodybuilding.com to get started and follow Jamie’s 12 week program.

Laura Bailey’s Nutrition, Training & Supplementation

Laura Bailey is one of the top NPC Figure competitors in the nation. She’s consistently done well in her competitions and it’s not by accident. It takes hard work, dedication a proper nutrition plan and solid training. Laura was one of the finalists in the Bodybuilding.com BodySpace Spokesmodel compeition and gives us a look into how she got that rock’n hardbody.

Visit Bodybuilding.com to get Laura’s exact training, nutrition and supplementation program. It’s a sweet breakdown of everything she eats and includes the breakdown of calories, protein, carbs and more. You’ll also get an idea of her workouts on the site. Great content from Laura and TEAM BODYBUILDING.com.

Laura’s Personal Philosophy:

Nutrition
My philosophy regarding nutrition is simple: “If it doesn’t taste good, I’m not eating it!” I hear so many people say, “I can eat plain chicken and oatmeal forever”. No they can’t, otherwise they would stay in shape forever.

This is exactly why most people fall off their nutrition after about a week, and is also the reason most competitors rebound so bad in the off season. Their nutrition plan makes them miserable. They are cranky and don’t like what they eat.

I don’t believe in eating food; I believe in eating meals….good meals! There’s a big difference. “food” can be bland and boring, but “meals” have flavor and life! I have to enjoy what I’m eating if I’m going to make those habits a lifestyle rather than something that is only seasonal.

The best investment I ever made was in a nutritionist. He helped me relearn everything about eating and completely changed my perspective.

I never enjoyed cooking, but have learned to become quite the chef out of necessity. I took foods that I enjoyed and learned how to prepare them with healthy substitutions that still allowed me to eat them, even during competition season.

Some of my favorites are: lemon poppy seed muffins, chocolate muffins, zucchini bread and carrot cake muffins, strawberry pancakes, 7-layer bean dip, Mexican pizza, potato skins, crab cakes, chicken and shrimp fried rice. Now that’s good eating! I always look forward to my next meal, and so should you.

Get educated about nutrition, get recipes, get in that kitchen, and get creative! You’ve got nothing to lose except pounds!
